BTFormular: can someone please tell me the effect(s) of that fiscal cliff.
Fiscal cliff entails that the US government would cut almost $600billion from its budget so as to pay its debt.

Thank God a compromise has been reached this morning! If not, all the Small and medium businesses would have their taxes go up which ofcourse would make them lay-off some of their workers; families would have 2% increase in their taxes, health, military and all the government subsidies would reduce dramatically. Infact some analyst say that 2million jobs would be lost and that's enough to bring the country back to recession.

So striking a deal so that the spending cuts will be slow but steady is better. That's why a compromise must be reached between the Democrats and Republicans...just like PDP and ACN.

Let's assume a deal wasn't struck, one would just have to sell the Dollar and all indices (Dow, Nasdaq & SP500).
So that's what up! wink

Happy new year, I hope this thread becomes more peaceful and mature. Last year was a mess!

@Infofirst, you wrote all the keys to long-term success for anyone who's serious about making money this year. God bless you.

They should amend the post so only the poster's comment remains.
It can be quite annoying scrolling down and down through what the OP has already written.

musiwa10: i think the main reason is that your leaders in nigeria, are not expose people.. you cant give what you dont know.. look what did nigeria expected from goodluck. you get what you put in.. it is like computer. garbage in, garbage out.. this is how leadership is.. so dont expect much from goodluck. why this all this houses burn down at jankara because govt did not know what to do, this is the honest truth.. when you look at goodluck ministers. and you listen to them.. iweala is one of them claim live abroad. but listen to her or others.. she and others speak like people who have never lived abroad before.. her igbo is so thin.. like the woman in Osisi village in mbise local govt of obodo in imo state. stop laughing.. it was a joke, she as alway been my best joke.

it tell you, she also is not expose.. i have alway believe she never lived abroad. may be she use to visit abroad.. for 5 years she could not transform nigeria economy.. that tell you she does not know much..

it is like computer. garbage in, garbage out.. what i think is for the next generation , there is a need to expose nigerian.. look i will surpass all what fashola or goodluck did in 5 years in 1 years.. because i dont need to set up committee upon committee.. i have already been through the system.

I already know what to do.. i will not be asking anyone any nonsense what to do.. because i have seen the solution.. Seen the solution is different from guessing the solution. what goodluck is doing is try and error.. this is why there is a need to expose young nigerian

And another issue is,, it most be made compulsory that anyone running for any elected position most have at lease 5 A's from high school.. what you people call secondary school. it most be in the constitution. this way.. you have only the best your country can produce in power.. you can not continue to put f9, c6,c5, p7, p8 in power and expect to do well.. they dont have a brain, i may sound rude, but i am been honest.

if i wanna do something, the way i will do it, will be different from Goodluck or fashola.. you will notice, i never call him Jonathan.. I never do.. because we dont call people by their lastname , but their first name.. sorry, i am talking to nigerian.. what i mean surname..

you basically are putting in bullshiit in and you are getting bullshiit out. there is a need to expose young nigerian.. i sound rude. sorry, just speaking the truth.

PASTOR TUNDE BAKARE : 95
PROFESSOR BARTH NNAJI : 84
OCCUPYNIGERIA PROTESTERS : 29

Ladies and gentlemen, join me in welcoming Pastor Tunde Bakare into Nairaland Hall of Fame.

See you next year, Godwilling
Congrats! PTB.

He deserves the award. Not only did he organise a protest to support GEJ when Yar adua was sick. He also rejected the $50,000 'transport fare' that GEJ presented to him.

Also organised the subsidy protest that removed the veil from the cabals that have been holding this nation in bondage. A staunch believer in good governance who put the government on its toes.

Kudos.

PoliticsRe: Reasons Why Our Society Is Underdeveloped by ayox2003:
cap28: There is no way you can talk about changing the value system in a society when a greater power dictates and controls everything about your life ranging from economic policies right down to what you watch on your tv.

How do you change the system when your economic policy is decided for you in washington and london?
This post is typical of nigerians attitude: shifting the blame. And it goes to show you are one of the nigerians that needs re-orientation. Listen, without any doubt, the West have done more harm than good. But take a look at the situation of the country right now and u'd agree with me that the harm we have done by ourselves is gazillion times much more than what the West's done.

By the way, how does this post correlate with the issue at hand? Did the West make you drive against the traffic flow as in the OP's post number 2? Or would you boldly say the West forced you to vote for the Senator just because he is from your village? Did the West tell you to bribe custom officers instead of paying a fine? Gentleman, the West is overrated. We need to do some home-keeping here bro. Ghana did theirs and its gradually getting better with Ghanians, Botswana did theirs and they have an enviable democracy. Nigeria can also do it okay?

cap28: how about trade- who dictates the terms and conditions of how you trade? you or the western powers? have you heard of the world trade organisation? are you aware that international treaties and regulations are created by this organisation and are you aware that europe and america its most powerful members dictate international trade policies - can you explain how nigeria will be able to operate outside such a powerful organisation?

are you aware that europe and america form trading cartels which they use to maintain a monopoly over certain areas of trade thereby keeping third world countries outside this cartel and forcing them to be dependant on whatever these advanced economies decide - can you explain how a country like nigeria can circumvent such cartels?
Again you talk about the West and its cartels. Oh yeah! The cartels are milking Africa. Let me whisper this into your ears: these cartels are everywhere, even in the West. Why do you think the US fiscal cliff negotiation is stalling? A negotiation that would bring US to recession if it fails? Cartels. Mister Cap, cut the crap! Cartels have been before we came into this world and cartels will remain when we leave. We joined WTO the same day with Malaysia, why has Malaysia been able to take oil-palm shoots from Nigeria here to become one of the largest producers of oil-palm in te world? She has 4.5million hectares of land used for oil-palm and exports 39% of the world oil-palm. Arent there cartel in Malay too? Or the West controls their production and trade dynamics too? Do you know the number of jobs that oil-palm has created in there? Keep blaming the cartels! Shior.

cap28: you can not bring up family values when you have not dealt with the more pressing problems that influence the value systems within society.

for example - last year nigeria decided to implement the IMF policy of increasing the price of petrol - the knock on effect of that was a further decline in the standard of living of the average nigerian - the consequences or symptoms of this have been an increse in the crime rate - kidnapping, ritual killings, armed robbery etc which have peaked dramatically, would it be right to blame the perpetrators of these crimes without addressing the root causes of these crimes? in other words does it make sense to spend hours castigating armed robbers and other criminals without asking why nigeria continues to implement economic policies formulated by western powers like america and britain that create the kind of poverty, miserty and hopelessness that force people into a life of crime?

You say that nigeria is only 13 years old as far as implementing democracy but i beg to differ - nigeria is yet to implement anything remotely resembling democracy, a dog that is born in a stable can never be mistaken for a horse but will remain what it is - nigeria is a creation of the british empire and has remained so since 1960, nigeria in its current state was created to serve the interests of the british ruling class not the people of nigeria - the sooner you realise this the better for you, almost all of nigeria's leaders since independence have been handpicked by britain - those who were not chosen or who deviated from the instructions of the british empire were assassinanted or removed from power, all the nigerian people have ever got out of this set up is flag indeppendence which is merely symbolic and means nothing.

Nigeria can only become truly independent when it throws off the shackles of economic and political domination from the US and britain - but how do we do that? - we create awareness among the masses - the more people know where their problem is coming from the better their chances at defeating it.

we have to get organised - there has to be a mass movement of nigerian people from all walks of life that must be willing to remove the current system that we have in place.

this is how the chinese defeated the western powers and became what they are today.
Lastly, the Chinese are yet to defeat the world powers and they may not even defeat them in our lifetime. The Chinese also have their short comings but I would use them to engrave my point.

1) Chinese have values. They are ready to keep those values with their lives.
2) Chinese have succeeded in creating such an atmosphere for themselves to thrive. Their homekeeping is superb. Remember Bo Xilai, the Party chief that was expelled recently in China cos of corruption? Do you know the latest news in China? They are calling all party members to declare their asset privately.
3) China is spending a lot on education- home and abroad.

All these things boil down to all what I stated earlier.

Time to hit the sack wink

cap28: still focusing on symptoms as opposed to ROOT CAUSES, TYPICAL EXAMPLE OF THE AVERAGE AFRICAN'S INABILITY TO THINK CRITICALLY, ANALYSE AND PROBLEM SOLVE.
Funny.

Cap28, put on your thinking cap and analyse these issues. Quit making these glib statements and soundbites. All what I said are the root cause, except for education which could be termed a "symptom", in your words. Meanwhile all what the OP said are nothing but "symptoms" of the rot in our society.

Think critically and answer these questions: What makes up the society? Aint it the family?
What's the mindset of an african man? What are his core values? What is our belief system? Does an african man believe that character is destiny?

Let's delve into politics, Nigeria is just a 13-year old baby in the world of democracy. Yes a baby because no country ever got it right 13 years into democracy. Although this does not give any excuse to glory in our filthy system because there's a lot that needs to be done.
We need to fix the system and create values, look into the faulty laws of the society, encourage honesty and integrity, so that there will be a good reward for anyone who's willing to put-in his/her effort. These are the basic tenets on which democracy is built.

Take a look at all these parties and their candidates: what's their character ethic vis-a-vis their personality ethic. Zilch! Why do the electorates vote for them? Tribal reasons.

Then something must be fundamentally wrong with both the electorate and the elected. Values!

The value system must change.
Fix the system and things would change.

PoliticsRe: Reasons Why Our Society Is Underdeveloped by ayox2003:
Somany factors..but the most important is the family.
The family is the bedrock of development and values. Its been proven that 50% of one's ultimate attitude, character and value system depends on ones upbringing. If parents take the time to train their children with the motive of making them good representatives of the society, these things would change.

Another reason for this decadence is the rot in the education sector. Without much ado, education in has been drained to the dregs. Gone are the days when the universities influence students. Gone are the days when the school passes through students and make them ready for the society both in character and skill. I don't mean to ridicule Nigeria but I visited a university in Kenya and I was stunned.

Lastly, "mindset" is one small but mighty factor responsible for this. Who do nigerians think they are? Most of us take pride either in cultural or religious beliefs. Cultural beliefs that leads to bigotry and tribalism, religious beliefs that leads to terrorism, inferiority complex inherited from colonialism, and many more have crippled these nation. A nigerian would rather donate to his church than help a needy neighbour who could not send his child to school.

I just hope we are gonna be able to rise to the task cos without this, nothing will be done.

vivian chinaza: I'm from a very humble background or should I say poor? Yea poor sounds like it, "humble" just makes it bearable, Lol, ok. But rich guys keep coming for me, and no one has ever cared about my family's financial/social status. In fact, that's the first thing I tell them, I'm always like "dear, don't let my looks deceive you, I'm from a very humble background o." I'm Vivian, and that should be enough!
So contrary to your opinion, majority of guys don't actually care.

A lot of ladies who have misplaced their priorities actually care about how rich a guy is before they consider him and I just pity them. I just hope they realize that the life of a man is a mystery. A man's life can change in a twinkle of an eye.

I'm friends with a lot of people who at one time couldn't even afford a decent meal, but just one phone call changed their lives for best, and vice versa.

Last year, I did a job for this couple that had no house. The groom is my friend and as at then the most valuable property he had was his laptop. In fact, when he told me he was getting married I was like "are u crazy?" Cos he didn't even have a house. Few weeks to the wedding someone gave them a room in his flat and they were squatting there. Whenever I went to the house to discuss their wedding I was always like "how could this girl get married to a man that doesn't have a house?" Honestly, I couldn't understand, I couldn't even think of myself doing it. Well, there marriage is a year old and they are now living in one of the beautifully furnished house I have ever seen.

Stories like this humble me, and I of all the things I have seen in my few years on earth, I have known that riches cannot be guaranteed. I have also known that life is a mystery.

So if you fall in love with someone from a rich background good, if you fall in love with someone from a humble background good too. Marrying a rich person is not a crime, marrying a poor person is not a crime either, provided that LOVE is the driving force.
Obviously this is a lady who's got a good head on her shoulder.
