She's in the academia, so if there's a renowned painting in a reputable museum that a certain school of thought believe to be that of the prophet, it's the duty of a scholar to study it, document it and keep the record as "a painting claimed to be that of the prophet". This is regardless of whether she actually believes it herself or not. In some fields, you don't just teach your personal believes but other people's arguments too. After all, many religious people have been made to argue for and against the existence of God in philosophy classes. Our Christian teachers were forced to teach us Charles Darwin's theory of evolution even though they didn't believe it.

It's all a matter how the teacher presented it. If the school had problems with her, it's probably cause she categorically stated and probably insisted that was his real picture. Anyway, she wasn't sacked as reported by the OP. Her contract wasn't terminated. The school just refused to extend her contract (contract workers have thier contracts renewed after a period of 6 to 12 months if the employer still needs them). This will not reflect as a sack on her career profile, so she could easily get another job.
