The Rose of Versailles (1979).....8.5/10

Synopsis -
The story is centered on the true life events leading up to the French Revolution of 1789 and also covers the Revolution itself whereby the commoners and some other factions sought to take back political power over France from the ruling class/monarchy. This led to countless loss of life and so much human cruelty.

The story is about 90% based on true life events but it's major protagonist is a completely fictional character called Oscar François de Jarjayes. Oscar was a member of the Jarjayes family who have been loyal to the Monarchy.

Oscar, due the her father lacking a male heir was raised by her father as a man to succeed him. As a result, she joined the Royal guards.

It is a tragic tale that retells the events leading up to the French revolution and many characters who played different roles in it.
I had to do a little research on the French revolution after I finished watching and while the series isn't 100% accurate, it is mostly accurate and many of the major events and characters were captured in this 40 episodes anime series.

It captures many major events like the Affair of the diamond necklace during which the people completely lost faith in the ruling class. ..

When I started the story, I thought it would be like the usual Hollywood female power show with Mary Sue characters but the deeper I went, it became clear that this wasn't the case.

Every character stands out with their own strength and weaknesses. Oscar struggling with her own identity and romance as someone who was raised as a man and who had fully accepted that identity, even if it meant depriving herself of love and attempting to shut out her feminine side and feminine emotions.

Andre who loved and was loyal to Oscar but would not hesitate to call her out when he disagreed with her choices.

Marie Antoiniette, the Dauphine of Austrian origin who entered a political marriage at the tender age of 14 with the French Dauphin (who became King Louis XVI). She was mostly portrayed as a timid but ignorant Queen easily manipulated and swayed by her own emotions and thus failing to see the plight of the common people.

The way the story captures many events is brilliant. The soundtrack too was brilliant and fitting.

The only downside is the animation. Since it was animated in 1979, the animation is not great.

Aside the folks that hated on Vinland Saga S2 for hating sake, the criticism for the genre switch is valid. Returning to a show that already established itself as an action show in its first season expecting action is not irrational in any way.

A lot of viewers definitely needed to readjust to the execution, narrative style and pacing of the second season. I mean, even you admitted that it took some getting used to.
The highlight of season 1 of Vinland Saga was not the action, it was the story and the characters.

Askeladd was almost like the main character of season 1.

Canute also had good development in season 1...turning from a timid Christian prince to becoming someone who rebelled against God and wanted to even create paradise on Earth for those who he believed could not be saved by the trials set forth in the world by God (aka the Vikings)

From that to even become a schemer who planned to usurp his father. And eventually he achieved same.

Thorfinn was the only stagnant in season 1 and was criticized by Askeladd for refusing to grow up.

Ask any fan of the series, the best parts of season 1 were not the action scenes. A show having action doesn't make it all about action.

Season 2 has almost all the elements of season 1 but has very little action and a far slower buildup.

That's why I think criticizing the season 2 for having very little action is not valid. Because the highlight of season 1 were not the action scenes...

If Demon Slayer was to make another season with no action but just character writing and storytelling, then that would be a valid complaint because the highlight of Demon Slayer has been focused on the fight scenes.

NGL, I initially found it premium boring and dosed off many times while watching the first few episodes last year even tho I knew it was good. The minus 0.1 points deduction that didn't give it a perfect score is for that penalisation for not enjoying it at first.

I knew I was gonna enjoy it later but at that time I couldn't digest it properly. So I left it.
The moment I realised they're both different things and wasn't going to be the same as season 1, the more I opened up to it.

It's the best character work I've ever seen for an anime. Einar back story was very captivating. Arnheid and Gardar story was very captivating and the climax of the whole season. Bruv, that shït was heartbreaking as fvvk. If they ever adapted the show/manga into live action, people go cry tire amd give it GOAT status easily.

That's why I criticise people who don't clearly understand what they are watching or the narrative a filmmaker is trying to pass. Those people who dunked at VS S2 are dumb@ss that needs to stick to action and vibes, cos even tho it felt boring and slow unlike the first, it was a storytelling masterpiece. The voice actors deserves Emmys.

That scene where the farmer — Arnheid's master beats her brutally rocked me to my bones. Proved the point of one bad day can turn any man, even a good man into a monster.
@ bolded

Was Ketil ever a good man tho?

He treated his slaves well and even gave them a chance to become free men but he never gave the same deal to Arnheid.

He had a wife too but cheated on her with Arnheid.

He must have known that Arnheid was with him against her will, but he made her stay with him because he loved her. She was his slave and never really had a choice. Technically, every sèx he had with Arnheid qualifies as rape.

Although you can argue that based on the times he lived in, he could be seen as "good" compared to how others treated slaves. And it was the right of the owner to sleep with his slave.

Aside that sef, Ketil was a coward using the reputation of another man who bore the same name. He was never this brave or strong warrior

Vinland Saga S2......9.9/10

The best piece of work I've watched this year.

As weirdly as it may seem with the story centred on Vikings and pillaging and conquering, this season is strongly anti-war and showcases the futility of the battle for supremacy.
Touches on every facet of life.

Talks about loss, honour, love, hate, depression, hope, greed, betrayal, brutality, kindness, anguish, pain, forgiveness, redemption and self-love.

Thorfinn's character development is the best I've ever seen on television. From a vindictive stubborn little kid, always quick to settle disputes in a battle of fists, axe and sword, impulsive, and now grown to a wise, cautious and knowledgeable young man.

Always quick to violence in his youth and doesn't mind being exploited to hurt others just so he can get what he wants; to being haunted by his misdeeds and demons to a sympathetic fellow and to finally forgiving himself for all his previous bad deeds and offering reparations for his past actions. He finally grows to use his obscene strength for the good of others and for once not geared towards himself and learns restraint as a virtue.

King Canute grows into a wise and calculative Monarch. A shadow of his former youth self — once a timid, feminine, cowardly prince who needed all the protection in the world and unfit for rulership. Now he grows into a wise and formidable King. Even a tough warrior to fight against.

The best character driven work I've seen of late. Character development at its peak! So many Fleshed out characters left right centre!

While the first season focused on war fighting, battles and actions scenes whilst being top tier. It showed the brutality of war and somehow glorifies it. A look at war from the lens of the warrior's perspective or the perpetrators of war and the glory war brings to the "victors". The second season tells the tales of war in the eyes of the "losers". The consequences of war and the ramifications it means for being on the losing side.

Simply put: season one dwells on war with the eyes of the "conquerors", while season two focuses on war in the lens of the "conquered".

A cautionary tale to war mongering, especially to those who doesn't fully understand what war entails or have experienced it first hand. So many philosophical teachings and questions to glean from this series. But alas, war never stops and the best way to stop war is to bring a gigantic war that stops all future wars? A utopia with a reign of peace?

It sings like poetry. This season is a love letter to poets!! It's a dialogue delight. Rich dialogue, the best I've seen in the anime genre and arguably among the best I've ever watched in any medium.
The musical score, hot damn!! The composer needs a massive raise. Perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the moment and drives home the feel of all the scenes. Talk about musical perfection. Using music score to tell a story without words. It has emotion. Unevenly balanced to denotes the various feelings going through the characters.
Superb Cinematography and animation too.

It's one TV show to make you think and stir your intellect. I can go on and on about this show without fully encapsulating what it entails. Shows how good it is.

Trust Japan to give you a masterpiece story about War. I think these people are unparalleled in war tales. While Hollywood mostly focuses on the glitzy facets of war, with the action and destruction and pillaging; trust Japanese filmmakers to give you a more personal tale and a lasting experience.

I'd easily give this my greatest anime of all time and even amongst the best TV series overall of the 21st century.
The same season was called boring by some people who wanted action every second.

Because most of the season was spent on a farm, they called it boring...

They ignored all the character work. Even side characters like Arnheid were fleshed out.

And her husband Gardar was used to critique the Vikings lifestyle and the regrets that come with loss

Looking at the new Champions League format...I am excited for the fixtures to come in this new format.

But at the same time, I am concerned for the players, and not only because of the huge number of games.

With this new format, every match is important and goal difference will be a huge determinant. This means there are less chances to rest players as every match is very important to avoid playoffs as only 8 teams will get automatic qualifications.

With our paper thin squad, we still can't afford to rotate and this might lead to our squad completely drained before January.

We don't have a reliable backup LB or RB. We don't have a DM. We don't have a LW. We only have 2 fit CBs with no backups

To fight Madrid's super team in the league, we also have to play to win every game.

How much more can this paper-thin squad take?

If we get one more injury in a major position, we are fûcked.

When you look at things, you realize that despite Madrid having a very shaky start to their league campaign, they are in a far better position than us.

They have so many players they can afford to rest and rotate and they just need to get their team playing well together and they will be good.

We on the other hand are walking on thin ice, with any little shake and we could collapse.

Huge shame to the board and Deco for this shambolic Summer window

From reports, our transfer window has closed since the club has no plans to sign any other player in this transfer window...

Na till January...

This is probably our worst summer window in decades.

We came into the transfer window with positions to fill like - LW and DM

Summer window is closing and we still have no LW or DM.

Now we got weakened in several positions as players left or are injured. We also only have 2 CBs and no proper backup for LB or RB

In other words, we are cooked...

We need at least one LW, DM, LB, CB, RB

We kept barking at players throughout this window yet the only played we managed to sign is Olmo grin

Hence my last paragraph. Thousands of idea have existed that it has become so difficult to flesh out an entirely new one, but there is a way to creatively "rebrand" existing ideas to make them somewhat new.

However, like you have alluded, these writers would rather play safe and dance around the same idea for ages, leading to more garbage media out these days than actual good ones.

I mean, our imagination are literally limitless, it can't be that hard.
Hollywood has always been about playing it safe.
That is why we get constant reboots or revival of dead franchises to milk and squeeze them to the last drop...

Look at the superhero genre. most superhero fights in Hollywood come down to simple punching and kicking despite the vast powers of many characters....

There is always the issue that directors feel something is too bizarre for the but screen
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Baddestguyp(m):
oyaskii:
This thought makes me ponder, can there actually be an "original" idea for a film or a show going forward? Like 100% fresh, and never seen before idea? 🤔.

I highly doubt, but i think there are so many materials and books that films and show can adapt from, and there is a way for screen writers to tweak existing IPs, to maintain some certain degree of originality and keep things fresh.
Depends on what you mean by original idea.

You can borrow from previous works while adding a new spin that makes it feel fresh. A combination of multiple genres can also lead to great works like Attack on Titan or the Songs of Ice and Fire

If you mean whether it's possible to make a new movie without any idea that has been explored before, that's unlikely

For example, the fantasy genre has limitless possibilities as it's basically up to the extent of the writer's imaginations... (Unlike the fraudulent multiverse).

Unfortunately most fantasy shows/movies especially from Hollywood just rehash the same thing --- dragons, magic spells, fairies, goblins, vampires, etc

All of these fantasy/mythical creatures and powers were created by people, why can't others invent new ones?
