Helkayklassic: If the person is not close to you In anyway, i mean someone that is related to you and ready to help you financially, then N560 to $1 is a good deal.
As long as you are not dealing with the embassy, When it comes to exchange rate, just forget about official rate most people will use black market rate for you. You better grab it now before he will use the black market rate of N580 to $1 for you.
Exactly! The earlier she grabs the offer, the better since N560 is even currently mostly selling rate and N580, currently mostly the buying rate. That is a good deal. In open, free market transactions, the official rate does not work! She should be glad the person isn't charging her "service fee" and "bank charges"! |

macsilver: Good people of Nairaland… I heard somewhere that most Phd international students are usually fully funded. See I’m very new to this and I’m on this page to get enough information as to application process and tips… I hope to write GRE, Ielts and Toefl starting January and to schools immediately my results are out. But the financial burden is what I’m scared of. If I can get funding, I’m good. My question: is it possible to get full funding if my gre and Toefl are great?
Is there any school ready to take students while putting funding into consideration?
What exactly does full funding cover… school fees and accommodation or just school fees?
I’m 32, planning to run my PhD just now (never felt the need to leave this country until I saw the new price of bag of rice)… never married, no kid(s), I have a few plots of land and car (to probably use as ties back home or however that works)…
Is my age or marital status an issue?
I’m in the humanities (faculty of Arts)
I’ve been checking on many schools and all I see are “Tuition and fees”. Does this mean school fees and accommodation, etc or just fees and books? I’ll be super glad to hear answers so I know what to do with my life. Remember, I’m new at this. Please don’t laugh at me oooo Thank you! Yes, most PhDs in the US are fully funded. Any school that asks you to pay for a PhD probably does not value or regard you. You are better off not attending such schools. By being "fully funded", it means you do not have to pay tuition at all and they will pay you stipend (they are able to do this for at least five years provided you make satisfactory academic progress). Some even pay additional cash if you bring any dependents with you. However, you have to note that offer rates for these schools are infintesimally low because they are predicting that you would be successful as a PhD holder. Hence, they are only able to make offers to those they predict would turn out absolutely great. In order to strengthen your application, write the GRE and make sure your percentile is really high in the verbal reasoning and analytical writing sections (since you are a humanities person). 80th percentile in each won't be a bad idea. Try to score well in the Quant section as well (a very low score can be a huge red flag). Write the IELTS or TOEFL as well. Furthermore, look for professors (from your undergraduate institution) that can write very strong recommendation letters for you speaking to your research potentials and academic strengths. In response to their fully funded offer, yoy may be required to offer some assistantship (teaching, research, etc). I do not know what area of the humanities you belong, but I know schools like Rutgers University offer fully funded Philosophy PhDs (Rutgers is insanely competitive). Also, University of Arizona offers a fully funded MA program in Creative Writing (insanely competitiveas well). Philosophy and Creative Writing happen to be some regarded programs in the humanities, by the way! P.S.: I do not have a PhD nor am I currently a PhD student. I know these things based on accumulated knowledge. |

Me: As part of my research into the program i also looked at post study employment opportunities in Nigeria and found that there is a lot of demand especially in the private sector, As such, i intend to return to put the skills i gained to good use. VO: I can see you have an in state tuition, how will you pay the rest? Me: I took out a student loan with Mpower finance for 25k dollars with a maximum of 100k. I also have personal funds of 4k dollars VO: How will you pay for next year? Me: The loan can be extended up to a 100k so i will utilize that. VO: Have you left Nigeria in the last 2 weeks? Me: No, I have not. VO: Alright, everything looks good here. I will be approving your visa. This paper will tell you all you need to pick up your passport. Me: Thank you sir. Have a great day.
I am open to answering any questions. Preferably here so everyone can learn as well.
Also I was so nervous but I did my best to sound confident and not be discouraged by the blue papers flying about. Congrats, bro! You went back to the drawing board and made the right adjustments! Nice! If I may ask, considering that your funding is literally mixed, what did you fill in the DS160 form in the section "Person/Entity paying for your trip"? |

xxxscholar: 1. It is advised you don't make travel plans until you get your Visa so your answer should be NO
2. Exactly what is in your i20.
3. source of funding (sponsor) OK. Well noted. Thank you. However, how about cases of mixed funding? The allotted space does not provide for you to list more than one sponsor. |

Hello, everyone,
What are the best ways to answer these questions on the DS160 Form?
1. Have you made specific travel plans? The options are Yes or No. What are the implications of each answer? Can they penalise you for a 'no' since you have not booked your flight?
2. Intended Length of Stay Do you put the program duration?
3. Person/Entity paying for your trip? What does this mean? Is it talking about your source of funding or who is paying the flight cost?
Thank you. |

Hi everyone! Good evening! Is it really the case that one cannot pay SEVIS fee in Nigeria even through Western Union QuickPay whereby you visit a local agent and pay the equivalent in local currency?
Furthermore, I just obtained (today) my I-20 for Spring 2022. Does anyone have any tips on what I need to do secure a visa whether through emergency appointments or surge method as school starts in January?
I look forward to your inputs. Thank you. |
