Tunde Bakare, a Nigerian Prophetic-Apostolic pastor, has revealed what he knows about some of Nigeria’s leading political figures. Bakare, who is pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly and one of the conveners of the Save Nigeria Group, has given a no-holds- barred interview to the The Interview magazine. He disclosed how President Muhammadu Buhari picked him as running mate in 2011 elections and the role of Bola Tinubu, the-then national leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, later the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the drama that followed. Azubuike Ishiekwene, the managing director/ editor in chief of The Interview, in a statement also cited Bakare as saying: “When I first spoke to Tinubu about it (after Lai Mohammed had come to tell me that the ACN wanted me to persuade Buhari to be the party’s flagbearer), he (Tinubu) said, ‘the greatest mobiliser in the South West will be his running mate .’” Bakare while narrating how ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s follower, Godswill Orubebe, chased him with a $50,000 “gift”, he attributed Jonathan’s failure to his lack of capacity. In an interview that he would later say “drained him of virtue”, Bakare did not mince his words about the leadership tussle in the South West, the challenges before Buhari and his potential role in Buhari’s administration. It should be recalled that there had been speculations during the last presidential election that Bakare had been paid an undisclosed amount of money to campaign against the candidacy of Jonathan of the PDP. However, the man of God while reacted to the development said will punish whoever is accusing him of taking bribe. https://www.naij.com/542442-pastor-bakare-reveals-knows-president-buhari-jonathan.html |

Port harcourt—A media rights group, Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, have called for the immediate release of Vanguard newspaper columnist, Donu Kogbara, who was kidnapped by gunmen from her home in Port Harcourt rivers state. CPJ, a New York-based rights group in a statement, yesterday by its West African representative, Peter Nkanga, said, “We condemn the kidnapping of Donu Kogbara and call on Nigerian authorities to launch an immediate and efficient investigation.” It urged Nigerian authorities to do their utmost to find Kogbara, establish a motive for the abduction and apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators, adding that she had worked for Vanguard newspaper for some 30 years, as well as for the BBC, Channel 4, the Sunday Times and The Mail. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/cpj-nupeng-demand-unconditional-release-of-donu-kogbara/ |

Nigeria’s billionaire, AlhajiAliko Dangote has met with the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on the need to speed up the necessary approval for his investment in power, mining and cement industries in the southern African country. Dangote who paid a courtesy call on President Mugabe reminded the President at his tate House yesterday that he was awaiting the relevant approvals to set up the group’s investments. He said, “We have already decided on multimillion investments in Zimbabwe in three sectors which are power, cement and coal mining. As soon as we get permits, we will hit the ground running.” The business mogul, who earlier Tuesday met with several government ministers, was confident that Zimbabwe would accelerate the licence and registration processes for the group to start operations in the ‘as soon as possible’. Dangote is expected to start setting up the 1,5 million tonne per annum plant by the end of the first half of 2016. Dangote Industries is also expected to invest in Zimbabwean power generation through Black Rhino Group, a $5 billion African infrastructure fund in which US private-equity group Blackstone Group LP is a co-investor. The chunk of Dangote’s investments outside the shores of Nigeria has mostly been in the cement manufacturing sector. He recently commissioned a $420 million cement-manufacturing plant and a 30-megawatt coal-fired plant in Zambia early this month. As he was in Zimbabwe same yesterday, Dangote Cement commissioned its $250 million 1,5 million metric tonnes per annum cement grinding plant in Douala, Cameroon, barely three weeks after the Zambia plant was commissioned. According to Dangote, “The cement manufacturing unit has expanded capacity five-fold in the last four years while it plans to double potential output to 80 million tonnes by year end, with the Zimbabwean approvals in sight.” “We want to set up an integrated cement plant here that will be bigger than all the plants that we have,” he said. Alhaji Aliko Dangote who also met with Zimbabwean’s Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa urged government to open up the country and scrap rigid visa requirements. “We look at setting up something that can translate into a million-and-a-half tonnes so that even when we continue to use cement, there won’t be a shortage of cement here. We will make cement available, he assured” The billionaire’s maiden Zimbabwean visit comes after Dangote Cement last week signed contracts with Chinese construction company Sinoma International Engineering to add 25 million metric tonnes across 11 countries. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/dangote-meets-mugabe-on-investment-approval/ |
The EU is preparing to step up action against people smugglers in the Mediterranean, actively seizing the boats which carry thousands of hapless migrants to Europe, officials said Tuesday. The 28-nation EU launched the first, intelligence gathering phase of its EU NavFor Med operation in July and the commander Admiral Enrico Crendendino believes it is now time for the next step as the crisis deepens, they said. “Based on his military assessment, (Crendendino) presented a proposal to move to the second phase of the operation,” said Catherine Ray, spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Such action would still be confined to the high seas, in line with international law, she noted. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/09/eu-to-step-up-action-against-mediterranean-people-smugglers/ |

Lagos lawyer and rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to examine the facts surrounding the alleged illegal dissolution of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and graciously direct its immediate re-instatement as he has done with those of other agencies. On July 16, 2015, Buhari, through a circular signed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, announced the dissolution of the governing boards of all Federal Government parastatals, agencies, institutions and government-owned companies. But the lawyer in a statement said, given the clear provisions of the NDDC Establishment Act, the dissolution was unlawful. He said NDDC could not have been among the agencies whose boards were dissolved by that announcement but that on July 23, 2015, a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary (General Services Office), was addressed to the Managing Director of the NDDC, for the implementation of the above circular, for the purpose of dissolving the NDDC Board. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/09/adegboruwa-says-dissolution-of-nddc-board-illegal-urges-its-reinstatement/ |
Lagos—At least 26 suspected pirates and 7,000 copies of pirated films, especially pornographic films were confiscated by the Nigeria Copyright Commission and Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board during a three-day anti-piracy raid across the state. The three-day raid, which was carried out in collaboration with the Yoruba Movie Producers/ Marketers Association of Nigeria covered Iyana- Ipaja, Agege, Oshodi, Ijora, Orile Iganmu and Obalende. Executive Secretary of the LSFVCB, Mr. Bamidele Balogun who disclosed this yesterday, said the raid was part of the continuous effort to rid the State of the sale of pirated and unclassified movies asserting that those that were caught during the raids will be tried and brought to justice. Balogun stated that the State Government was concerned that Nigerian artistes were not getting maximum benefits from their works and this posed a serious challenge. He maintained that piracy is a greatest enemy of creative industry which must be defeated for the film industry as well as legitimate practitioners to grow. The General Secretary of Yoruba Movie Producers/Marketers Association of Nigeria, YOVIPMAN, Mr. Adetunji Ojetola who led his team for the raid confessed that the Association had made spirited effort in the past to curtail piracy. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/piracy-ncc-lagos-arrest-26-impound-7000-films/ |
