I'm Sick, Receiving Treatment Abroad, PDP Chairman Tells Angry Party Members He did not disclose his whereabouts, but noted that President Goodluck Jonathan; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih; Senate President, Senator David Mark and members of the party's National Working Committee are aware of where he is. PDOP Chair, Adamu Muazu Punchng Under-fire National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, has informed members of the party he is sick and currently undergoing medical treatment abroad. He did not disclose his whereabouts, but noted that President Goodluck Jonathan; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih; Senate President, Senator David Mark and members of the party's National Working Committee are aware of where he is. The former Bauchi State governor made the announcement in a statement issued by Tony Amadi, his Chief Press Secretary. He said he left the country last week and will return as soon as his doctors are satisfied with his medical condition. Mu'azu has been under intense pressure to relinquish power following the defeat suffered by the party during the last general elections, but be maintains he will serve out his term, which expires in March next year. "Dr. Mu’azu appealed to party faithful to be patient as the travails facing the party will soon wither away and the party will be a united opposition to the incoming All Progressive Congress for the overall good of Nigeria," the statement ended. |

Muhammadu Buhari's presidential inauguration in Nigeria on May 29, the White House said. "The First Lady will not be traveling to Nigeria," Caroline Adler, communications director in the first lady's office, said in an email Thursday. Original post: U.S. President Barack Obama will not attend Nigeria’s presidential inauguration on May 29, but his wife, Michelle Obama, is said to be among an American delegation that will go in his place. Other senior White House officials including Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry could also be chosen to attend Muhammadu Buhari’s induction ceremony, according to media reports. Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States, Ade Adefuye, confirmed with local media that outgoing Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan had extended an invitation to the U.S. government for Buhari’s inauguration, and a senior official is expected to lead the American delegation. “I have been told that there would be an unusually large American delegation that will attend the presidential inauguration on May 29,” Adefuye told Premium Times newspaper in Abuja. “Nigeria’s profile has been on the rise since after the election, with the concession by Jonathan and the smooth transition that is going on.” The Obama administration showed particular interest in the success of Nigeria’s elections and senior U.S. officials had denounced potential election-related violence, which marred Nigerian polls in the past. Obama himself urged Nigerian voters to insist on credible elections. Immediately after the general elections, he congratulated the West African nation on “the strength of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles.” “While far from perfect, the March 28 elections were the best since Nigeria’s restoration of civilian government in 1999,” John Campbell, the Ralph Bunche senior fellow for Africa policy studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in a blog post Wednesday. “Now, in the aftermath of the March 28 elections, it would be appropriate for the president to visit Nigeria, perhaps in conjunction with his July visit to Kenya for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Nairobi.” The U.S. president often sends a delegation to the presidential inaugurations of friendly nations, but the group is usually led by the American ambassador in that country. Senior government officials are sometimes chosen to lead the delegation to illustrate a special emphasis on the relationship between the two nations. In the last few years, Obama has met with Jonathan in Washington and New York, and Kerry has visited the Jonathan administration in Abuja. Last December, Jonathan canceled U.S. Army training for the Nigerian army, which was intended to help the troops fight Boko Haram insurgents in northeast Nigeria. Buhari, who defeated Jonathan in the presidential election by a couple million votes, has said he would like to restore military ties with the United States. “My administration will welcome the resumption of a military training agreement with the United States, which has halted during the previous administration,” Buhari wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times last month. “We must, of course, have better coordination with the military campaigns our African allies, like Chad and Niger, are waging in the struggle against Boko Haram. But, in the end, the answer to this threat must come from within Nigeria.” |

Outgoing President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has told the embattled Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state to resign now or face the inevitable option of impeachment by the 19 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Jonathan was said to have told Fayose that the time of impunity in Nigeria is over and that he (Jonathan) is committed to the rule of law. “As you can see, I am already packing my personal belongings out of the Villa, back to my Village, I cannot influence any process, we must allow the law to run its full course, we cannot continue to disrupt due process, that is not good for the country.” According to a source, Fayose (and the Ondo state Governor, Olusegun MImiko) were deliberately absent at the post election meeting held with Jonathan in Aso Rock because of the dismal performance of the PDP in the South West despite the last-minute huge investment and the promises that the zone will be delivered to the party. The 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly have begun moves that may lead to impeachment proceedings against Governor Ayodele Fayose. The factional Speaker of the Ekiti state House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, had last week, forwarded a notice of gross misconduct to the governor, a copy of the notice was also sent to his deputy, Dr. Olusola Eleka. But Fayose in his characteristic manner said the APC lawmakers should stop acting like “jesters”, describing the purported impeachment notice as the “joke of the century.” According to him, the script being acted by the APC is a failed one because no one, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to test the will of the Ekiti people. In the letter by the 19 lawmakers titled, “Re: Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct,” sent to Fayose, the APC lawmakers listed eight impeachable offences against the governor. These offences bordered on impunity, brigandage, stalking and other constitutional breaches. These included alleged invasion of the House of Assembly with thugs and miscreants, instigating an unconstitutional takeover of the House by seven legislators to sit in contravention of Section 96(2) of the 1999 Constitution, and prevention of the 19 APC legislators from performing their duties with the use of security agents and armed thugs. Other allegations listed in the notice are: sponsoring an unlawful impeachment process in the house, spending Ekiti State funds without the requisite constitutional approval in contravention of the constitution and running the government without legally constituted Executive Council in contravention of Section 192(2) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They also accused the governor of operating an illegal 2014 budget as well as sponsoring and instigating illegal sitting of the House in contravention of Section 96(1) of the Constitution. It was also learnt that moves by the embattled Governor Fayose, who published some death-wish adverts against the candidacy of the President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, to seek a truce with Buhari has hit brick walls. Fayose was said to have sent some emissaries through some traditional rulers in Ekiti state to help him appeal to Buhari for forgiveness, saying that his attacks on him were not personal but part of politicking. The Supreme Court has also reserved ruling till April 14 in the appeal find by the APC in Ekiti state challenging the emergence of Fayose as governor in the June 21, governorship polls, in which the PDP won in all the 16 local governments of the state. On Mandela’s prediction, Buhari’s associates said it had been a massive motivation all these years. One of the associates said that shortly after losing the 2003 presidential poll to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mandela had a one-hour engagement on the phone with Buhari. Mandela asked Buhari not to lose hope about ruling the country. Mandela said: “I spent 27 years in jail and came out to become South Africa’s President. You can still be president. “Since the election of Buhari, what Mandela said 12 years ago has been resuscitated. We were all excited when we saw a copy of the newspaper which reported Mandela’s advice to Buhari. Though he is dead, his prediction has come to pass. “This has confirmed his sage status. His golden words were part of those behind the resilience of Buhari. We are hopeful that the President-elect will serve the nation like Mandela did because they share many things in common, especially selfless service.” |
Professor Tam David-West, former Minister of Petroleum Resources, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to start preparing his hand-over note because his days in office as president of Nigeria are numbered. The reason, according to David-West, is because Jonathan’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will suffer a humiliating defeat in the hands of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections. “Jonathan should quickly look for shoes and go back to Otuoke. I have shoes in Ibadan and Abuja, I can give him some if he is in need of shoes. “Everywhere you go, you see signs that the end of this government, led by Jonathan, is very near. Honestly, I do not have anything against him, but a party and a man that can better manage Nigeria has appeared on the scene, and we have no choice but to save our country from an impending doom.” The elder statesman and Professor of Virology said Nigerians cannot continue to tolerate a government that is evidently confused and incapable of providing leadership. He warned that the drift in almost every sphere of our national life will continue if Jonathan is not shown the way out because, according to him, the president lacks the capacity to lead. David-West also called on President Jonathan to show Nigerians his doctoral thesis, and end the ragging controversy around his certificate. “I became a professor in 1974, so when I see a scholar I know. I have asked people to look for the PhD of Jonathan but I am yet to find it. I think he owes Nigerians an explanation because he is our president, Professor David-West said.
