The point Macmilla is making is that NAF does not have to be so strict on the 3.2km run. And the time in which we're required to complete the run is a bit stringent. Yes we're soldiers first but we're going to be employed within administrative capacities anyway so we basically don't have to run like Olympians. Plus cos we're fit to get in don't mean we'll remain fit when we're in. There are so many fat and unfit military personnels out there. Some I saw even at the zonal enlistment centers; looking at them, you'll bet they can't run 3.2km to save their lives, yet there're soldiers with NAF.

Nobody is asking you to run like olympians, and that's why they're giving you 18 minutes for 3.2km. Olympians run 5km in 10 minutes. You guys are making it look like 3.2km is such a difficult task to complete in 18 minutes (for males). Actually, an averagely fit person should be covering that distance in a much less time!

Literature / Nwekpo's Fuel Scarcity Experience by bankoleben(m): 12:22pm On Apr 08, 2016
I came across this beautiful piece on Facebook and couldn't stop laughing grin grin grin

As his Toyota Camry crawled closer and closer to the barricade at the gas station, Mr. Nwekpo's heart swelled with a mix of hope and joy. Finally he was going to get fuel. Thinking back to 7:30AM when he joined the queue about two and half kilometers away from the filling station, he checked the dashboard and it was 3PM. He had come a long way.

Nwekpo wiped his sweaty brows and stared out through the window, into the harsh heat of the sun as it hit the tarmac. "Hey... Kponmo! Bring it!" He beckoned a lady carrying a glass box of fried peppered cow skin.
"Abeg give me N200 kponmo," he requested, and even added that she got him a bottle of water out of his balance with her.

The line moved again and he quickly settled the meal on his laps so he could close the gap. This time, Nwekpo did not switch off the engine. His fuel gauge was flashing red, but then he was just 2 cars away from the gate of the gas station and he would soon buy fuel.

Nwekpo rolled up his windows, switched on the AC and began to eat his peppered kponmo.

All of a sudden, the car ahead of him pulled out of the queue into the road and zoomed off. So did a couple of cars from behind him. Nwekpo's heart began to thump in his chest. He quickly switched off the engine and rolled down. "Bros, abeg wetin happen?" He asked a man walking past his car.

"The wicked people no dey sell again."

Nwekpo could feel his head swell, his stomach turn and his knees weaken all at once! After 7 hours?! He could not believe what he had just heard. Nwekpo opened the door and slid out of the car. He took a few steps towards the gas station, spun around and walked back to his car, then he looked at the station again. He landed his fist heavily on the roof of the car and then leaned on it like he was apologizing for his burst of anger.

"After all the suffering," he muttered bitterly. He had just used the little fuel that would have gotten him to the next black market urchin to blow AC. Nwekpo was afraid to start the engine.

Then he heard a voice from behind him. Nwekpo turned around; it was a book vendor.

"Oga I have good motivational books for you. The Power of Imagination... Think and Become A Millionaire... The Richest Man in Babylon..."

Nwekpo registered his disinterest with a dismissing wave of his hand.

The vendor pulled another book from the stack he was hugging, "And if na spiritual books, e dey... Overcoming In Life... Evil Spirits and How They Attack Man..."

Nwekpo hissed. "Please I am not interested."

"Let me even ask you sir," the vendor pushed his luck further. "Do you believe there are demons? This book will show you that..."

Nwekpo's eyes were now red with fury. "Mr. Man I believe there are demons and I don't need your books to tell me that! You are a demon! Our leaders in this country are demons! The oil cabal are demons! Everybody is a demon!"

The book vendor ran away. He finally got the message.

Business / Oil Hits 2016 High Above $40; Glut Warnings Resurface by bankoleben(m): 8:30pm On Mar 07, 2016
Brent crude rose on Monday, hitting a 2016 peak above $40 a barrel as investors rotated more assets into raw materials, with oil buying encouraged by talk that OPEC
producers want a higher anchor price after a
selloff that has lasted nearly two years.

Gold and iron ore also were at multi-month highs. Oil prices also got a boost from data showing a smaller-than-expected build in stockpiles at the Cushing, Oklahoma delivery hub for U.S. crude futures. But some analysts cautioned that the global crude glut remained big.

Global crude prices have risen more than 40
percent since hitting 12-year lows less than two months ago. The rebound from lows of around $26 a barrel has also been driven by chart-related buying and asset rotation by investors that resulted in higher allocations into commodities such as oil and metals, as well as equities.

U.S. equities have risen about 8 percent since mid-February. Asian stock markets hit two-month highs. [MKTS/GLOB]

"Money flows from broader financial markets are powering this broader rally in oil," said Scott Shelton, energy broker with ICAP in Durham, North Carolina. "I don’t think the energy fundamentals for the next few days are going to matter much as the market is making a transition."

Brent LCOc1, the global crude benchmark, was up $2.18 at $40.90 by 1:13 p.m EST (1813 GMT). Its session peak was $41.04, the highest since Dec. 9.

Traders said price gains accelerated after market intelligence firm Genscape reported a smaller-than-expected rise in crude stockpiles at the Cushing Oklahoma delivery hub. [L1N16F0SS]

Major OPEC producers are privately starting to talk about a new oil price equilibrium of $50, New York-based consultancy PIRA told Reuters. Bullish bets on Brent hit a record high in the week to March 1, while those for U.S. crude reached November peaks as hedge funds abandoned some of their very bearish views on oil.

Technical analysts said the oil rally could be
nearing exhaustion at $40. Others said the global crude market remained oversupplied by around 2 million barrels per day, while higher prices raised the prospect of U.S. shale oil producers adding more drilling rigs after recent cutbacks.

Answer the question please.. what happened to the FG's share? Did Amaechi force them to spend and not save that as well. You think you're slick trying to dodge the question.

Then if sharing money is statutory, are you not being mischievous and being purposely dishonest by saying Amaechi blackmailed the FG?

Then in Nigerian politics I don't think anyone is Saint, this is why I don't defend any politician. As far as I'm concerned 95% are there for selfish purposes. I'm not saying Amaechi was right or wrong for asking for it to be shared but there was gross mismanagement. You can deny this all day to cover for your politician heros but it's true. Even the Amaechi insisted on the sharing because the money wasn't adding up anymore. They felt like the FG was already spending without then knowing so rather than the FG squandering the money, they insisted on sharing. If the FG weren't lacking integrity that argument won't hold but since their integrity was questionable they caved.

The interesting fact about this issue is that even the little that was saved in the Excess Crude Account was squandered by NOI without the approval of the state governors. That's the basis of the running battle between Oshiomole and Iweala. But you don't expect the natural-born wailers to acknowledge that!

Politics / Ohanaeze Backs Deji On Eze Ndigbo Title by bankoleben(m): 1:45pm On Oct 29, 2015
An Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has backed the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, for banning the Eze Ndigbo title within the state capital.

Specifically, the group said the title was not recognised by traditional rulers in the South-East and added that it was wrong of any Igbo man to parade himself as the Eze Ndigbo in the South-West.

Aladetoyinbo banned the title in the town following the face-off he had with the leader of the Igbo community in Akure, Gregory Iloehike, over the crisis at Mojere market.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo called for the implementation of a February 20, 2008 resolution by the South- South traditional rulers, who condemned and banned the use of the Eze Ndigbo title outside the South-East.

A statement issued by the leaders of the group, Joseph Okeke, and Lemmy-Kingsley Chukwuma, said, “It is the hitherto refusal of the relevant authorities to stop Iloehika from parading himself as Eze Ndigbo of Akure as directed by the South- East traditional rulers and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo since 2008, that gave him the courage to desecrate the stool of the Deji, an act which the Igbo in the state were not satisfied with.”

The group commended the monarch for employing maturity in resolving the face-off between Igbo people and the indigenes of Akure.

Art, Graphics & Video / The Dangerous Art Of The Ultimate Selfie by bankoleben(m): 2:24pm On Oct 16, 2015
If 2014 was the year of the selfie, then 2015 took the art of self-photography to a new and dangerous level.

People are, quite literally, dying to take a picture of themselves.

In Russia this year there have been a handful of selfie-related fatalities, including the death of two men in the Ural Mountains who posed for a photo while pulling the pin from a hand grenade.

And, in June, a university graduate died after trying to take a selfie while hanging from a Moscow bridge.

Most recently a 17-year-old boy fell to his death from a rooftop as he tried to take his picture for his Instagram page.

He had previously taken a number of similar pictures of himself posing on high rooftops in the city of Vologda.

The problem isn't just limited to Russia. In the US recently a man died after shooting himself in the neck while taking a selfie.

At least 12 people have died this year while taking pictures of themselves making the practice more deadly than shark attacks, of which there have only been eight recorded deaths in 2015, according to tech news site Mashable.

The statistic is creating very real problems for governments.

In August, officials at the Waterton Canyon in Colorado were forced to close the park after several people were caught getting a little too close to the wildlife.

"We've actually seen people using selfie sticks to try and get as close to the bears as possible, sometimes within 10 feet [3 metres]," said recreation manager Brandon Ransom in a blog.

And, at Yellowstone National Park, officials issued a warning after five separate incidents of selfie-takers being gored by bison.

In Australia, a rock that looks like a wedding cake was fenced off because too many people were climbing it to take pre or post-wedding photos of themselves.

While in Russia, in response to the number of deaths there, the Interior Ministry launched a campaign warning that "self-photography could cost you your life".

"A selfie with a weapon kills," the brochure read. The accompanying poster campaign listed dangerous places to take a selfie.
15-minute fame

So why are some people willing to risk their life to take the ultimate selfie?

It may come down to pure bravado, thinks Lee Thompson - whose snap of himself on top of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janiero went viral in June 2014.

"People see pictures like mine and see how they spread across the world and see a way to make themselves famous for 15 minutes," he told the BBC.

A professional photographer, Mr Thompson admits that the picture he took was done as a publicity stunt for his travel company, Flash Pack. He did, however, get permission to climb the statue.

"I'm not a serial selfie-taker - this shot was to publicise my business. It was the shot I knew I had to get because people love selfies," he told the BBC.

He admits that the trend towards ever more dangerous selfies is "getting out of control".

"Be creative with your pictures but don't put yourself in danger," he advised.

Narcissists

According to research published by the Ohio State University, the pictures that people post on social media can tell an interesting story about their personality.

Hundreds of tests on people's social media habits were conducted for the study, which showed that people who post a lot of selfies also tend to score higher in traits of narcissism and psychopathy.

Lead researcher Jesse Fox said that, for many, a dangerous selfie is worth it for the number of likes and comments it will generate.

"Likes are a quantifiable way of measuring popularity and these days it isn't enough to just post a picture of yourself, because everyone is doing that. The more extreme it is, the more likely you are to stand out and get lots of likes and comments."

The rise of the selfie as an art form has not gone unnoticed by manufacturers such as Asus, which recently launched a phone dubbed the ZenFone Selfie, that as the name suggests, comes with a powerful camera.

But it too is sensitive to the issue of risk-taking selfies and its marketing of the device in France came with a poster campaign similar to that of the Russian government, pointing out places where taking a selfie would be ill-advised - including in front of trains, in cars and with bears.

Shark selfie?
Despite the publicity, there doesn't appear to be any let-up in the amount of death-defying selfies being taken, nor people's appetite to look at them.

A video on YouTube, compiling what it describes as the "25 most dangerous selfies ever", has been viewed over 20 million times.

It includes examples of a man taking a selfie while a bull charges at him, a man posing with a lion, someone taking a picture in front of a train and a woman taking a selfie of herself and her toddler while driving.

James Kingston's picture of himself hanging off a crane (above) came in at number three.

The list also features several self-portraits with sharks which had gone viral but which the video exposes as fakes.

Selfies may have become more dangerous than shark attacks but it seems that even the most intrepid self-shooter draws the line at a picture with a Great White.

Science/Technology / Nasa Starts Year-long Isolation To Simulate Life On Mars by bankoleben(m): 8:03pm On Aug 29, 2015
A team of Nasa recruits has begun living in a dome near a barren volcano in Hawaii to simulate what life would be like on Mars.

The isolation experience, which will last a year starting on Friday, will be the longest of its type attempted.

Experts estimate that a human mission to the Red Planet could take between one and three years.

The six-strong team will live in close quarters under the dome, without fresh air, fresh food or privacy.

They closed themselves away at 15:00 local time on Friday (01:00 GMT Saturday).

A journey outside the dome - which measures only 36ft (11m) in diameter and is 20ft (6m) tall - will require a spacesuit.

A French astrobiologist, a German physicist and four Americans - a pilot, an architect, a journalist and a soil scientist - make up the Nasa team.

The men and women will each have a small sleeping cot and a desk inside their rooms. Provisions include powdered cheese and canned tuna.

Missions to the International Space Station last six months. The US space agency has recently conducted four-month and eight-month-long isolation experiments.

While others focus on the technical and scientific challenges of the journey, the isolation experiments address the human element of exploration and problems that arise living in tight quarters.

"I think one of the lessons is that you really can't prevent interpersonal conflicts. It is going to happen over these long-duration missions, even with the very best people," said Kim Binsted, a Nasa investigator.

Family / Woman Kills Sons To Put Focus On Daughter by bankoleben(m): 1:16pm On Aug 20, 2015
An Ohio woman has confessed to police that she killed her three sons because she said her husband was ignoring their daughter.

Police had at first ruled out foul play in the deaths of Brittany Pilkington’s three-month-old boy in July 2014 and her four-year-old son in April.

But when a third son was found dead on Tuesday, police took Ms Pilkington in for questioning and she confessed.

She told police she killed the boys by suffocating them with blankets.

Ms Pilkington, 23, was charged with three counts of murder and has been jailed.

When her three-month old boy was found dead in July 2014, authorities in Bellefontaine – a small town southwest of Cleveland – had removed the remaining boy and her three-year-old daughter from the home.

The children were returned to the family when the medical examiner found no evidence of foul play.

‘Just cold’
Police had been suspicious because Ms Pilkington did not show emotion when her three-month-old son died in July 2014.

“She was just cold,” James Breaston, a neighbour, told the Columbus Dispatch. “She just stared like nothing happened.”

The daughter, has been taken into custody by a local child welfare agency.

Authorities said Ms Pilkington and her husband Joseph were cooperative as she confessed to the killings.

“In her mind,” Logan County prosecutor William Goslee said, “she was protecting her daughter from not being as loved as the boys were by their father.”
