Lets talk about the Annual National Sports Festival, it's our own Olympics right here in Nigeria, where states compete against each other. Kaduna is hosting the 2008 Edition, even though it is holding in 2009, as we speak, various sporting events are on going and athletes are getting medals for their efforts. Delta State is the defending champion, and they at it again as they are presently topping the medals table with about 11 gold medals, while Edo state is right behind them with 8 Gold medals . . . . . . .You can share any news or information  you have got about KADA 2009 right here, medals table updates with credible links are also very welcome.

@Baro,
I see your good points. But, what do you propose?

A qualified Bini should emerge as substantive VC immediately after the University Governing council is constituted. Therefafter if the Binis insist they want to continue to churn out VCs back to back, then they would be TRIBALISTS, but as it stands now, The Binis are simply fighting for their overdue right

Okay, I see your point. But then, these appointments are not done based on ethnic group neither are they done based on locale. Using your/our illustration, it seems the problem boils down to numbers. These appointments cannot consider every single ethnic group no-matter-how-small-so-help-me-God. Have you considered what will happen if the school was big enough (either by sheer size or distributed campuses) such that two or more ethnic groups are from the locale(s)? Would they all rotate the VCship? What if the ethnic groups are so small, that five of them are in the locale of the school? Another rotation? Ethnic strife?

Dont be misled by the Federal tag, i can authoritatively tell you that the appointment is done on ethnic/locale basis, i will explain. University of Benin was founded when Edo and Delta states made up Bendel state, and as such the institution is regarded as belonging to both states. From what i can remember for now, since the tenure of Grace Alele Williams, the position of VC stayed withing the confines of Edo/Delta(Old Bendel)

Grace Alele-Williams - Itsekiri Delta State
Onokheroraye Urhobo/Isoko Delta State
Abhulimen Anao Ishan Edo State
Nwanze Anioma Delta State
Gbenedio Ishan Edo State?

Having said that, let me embark on a germane digression. . . .In the defunct Bendel state, which had ethnic groups like Bini, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ishan, Afenmai, Isoko, Ijaw, Anioma(Delta Ibo), the Binis were the majority, the Binis were more than any other ethnic group in the state(Bendel). Presently the Binis make up 70% of Edo state. Now the point flowing from this premise is that, how come almost every other minority ethnic group has produced a VC, some even twice, but the majority ethnic group which doubles as the host of the University is yet to smell the VCship spot.

As for the Student Union, yes Student Union, no Government in it, Prof Anao removed the Government after the Obe Rasaq saga of 2001/2002 session. He did this by amending the relevant laws and making students swear an affidavit of "good behaviour"; whatever that meant. Since then Student Union executives have been stooges of the University Administration, so the stance of the present President is not unexpected, he would only do otherwise at his own peril. The SU President is handicapped ab initio.

Before you start going off like a primary four pupil, let me ask you a few questions:

1. How many federal universities have had VCs from the "sectional group" of the location of the university?
2. Has UNN ever had a VC from Nsukka?
3. Has UNILAG ever had a VC from Akoka?

That group causing this noise does not represent the Binis, it's just a disgruntled tribalist who wants to convert a federal institution to a tribal one. Better wake up from you slumber.

You are geting it all wrong, your question should be;
1. How many federal Universities have had VCs from the "ethnic group" of the location of the university?
2.Has UNN ever had an Igbo VC?
3. Has Unilag ever had a Yoruba VC?

I guess the answers are obvious.

PS
Still using your illustration; Igbos are everywhere in Eastern Nigeria, so an Igbo VC for UNN from the Eastern states is perfect. Yorubas are everywhere in Western Nigeria, a Yoruba VC for Unilag from any of the Yoruba states is good enough. Since the Binis are only in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo state, where Benin is located, so a VC from Edo south Senatorial District should suffice. . . . . . GBAM

The guy was talking nonsense.
UNN to the best of my knowledge has never had an Enugu state or Nsukka man as VC.
Neither has FUTO in Owerri had an Owerri VC to the best of my knowledge.

Those institutions you said are located in the east; igboland so to speak, and they have obviously had numerous Igbos as Vice Chancellors, be it Nsukka or Nnewi. . . . But imagine a situation where all the V.C's of FUTO or UNN are from the West and the North, when you know there are alot of Igbo's qualified for same position? thats the Uniben situation.

As long as the VC elect is the best qualified to handle the job at that time in question, who gives a shit where he/she is from.

U guys should start saying something that makes sense and quit making circular arguments.

I have told Baro and I am telling U this too, challenge the lady's competence and not her ethnicity. If there is a reason(s) to believe that other VC hopefuls were more competent and qualified than she is , lets hear it. If not , hold ur peace.

Before Prof Mrs Gbenedio was appointed V.C, she was D.V.C Administration, according to university hierarchy the position of D.V.C Academics which was occupied by ;Prof. Obaseki(Bini) is the most senior of the D.V.C's ,he is next to the V.C. . . . . . What does that tell you? On merit, Prof Obaseki deserves the "V.Cship" position more than anyone, including Prof Gbenedio

debosky:

That is a redundant argument. Why must they have an 'indigene' as VC before they are satisfied? Nigerians are very silly when it comes to some of these matters. Executive power is NOT what all the focus should be about.

Universities should be meritocracies - if an indigene is the best qualified, by all means appoint the indigene, but DON'T appoint an indigene simply because of national character - we have enough of that destroying other institutions in the country.

That response was to Finally's post, don't detach my post for convenience.

Talking about qualification, we have hundreds of Profs of Bini origin who are more than qualified to be V.C, anywhere in the world. FYI. More than a decade ago Prof. Emovon (Bini) who later became Minister of Science and Technology was already Vice Chancellor of University of Jos,

That is the huge misconception that led to the protest in the first place. I had always regarded Uniben as a Federal institution and I dont think that status has changed.

Umaru Gomawalk was the VC of UNN for a number of years and nobody said a word.

That is not he issue, the issue s this: Which Federal University has never had an indigene of it's host ethnic group as Vice Chancellor? Is it Ife, ABU, UNN, or Unilag?
Politics / Re: Benin Indigenes Rejects New Igbo Vc In Uniben. by Baro(m): 11:33pm On Feb 10, 2009
As an Alumini of the great University of Benin, and a confirmed Bini boi, I think i have some firsthand information about this issue of Uniben "Vcship" let me grace the thread with my own contribution. Firstly I must confess that this issue is agelong and very complicated, but i will just try to provide some facts that would give fellow Nairalanders a better insight to what is going on.

University of Benin was founded over 35 Years ago.

It is a Federal institution based in Ugbowo Benin City, Edo state.

The institution was founded when it was Bendel State, then Delta State was part of Bendel State.

Hence Uniben is regarded as belonging to both Edo and Delta states.

Edo State is made up of the Binis,(they comprise 70% of the state, both landmass and population), the Ishans, the Etsakos, the Owans, the Akoko-edos, and a sprinkle of Ijaws.

The Binis are the inhabitants of Benin where the University is located.

It is specifically the Binis that is protesting over the appointment of the V.C and not the whole Edo state.

Since Uniben was Established, it has had atleast 5 V.c's

An Ishan man has Been V.C, An Itsekiri has been V.C, an Anioma Man(Delta Ibo) has been V.c, An Urhobo has been V.c

But the Bini man who hosts the institution has never been Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

That is, none of the over 5 V.C'S have been an indigene of Bini, what this means is that since the University of Benin was founded, an indigene, a son of the soil has never been found fit to be made Vice Chancellor, this is the grouse of the Bini's, and this is the crux of the matter.

Is it that for over 35 years no Bini Man has been found to be qualified or worthy to occupy the position of V.C? This is a fact that those tagging it as tribalism do not know; i.e an institution has been in your backyard for decades and you have never been in control of same institution? Other people come from far and near, and rule over you, for almost forever?

If the Binis have had one or even half tenure as Uniben V.c and they were agitating like they are now, then anyone could justifiably say, "ah! these bini people sef are tribalists, na only dem wan be V.C", but a Bini man has never been V.C, not even for one day. For those harping on tribalism, let me make it clearer, there is a gulf of difference between the Bini's wanting the position of V.C permanently zoned to it and them wanting to have a "first taste" of same position. In my opinion, it is even the Binis that have been oppressed overtime, or which Federal University has never had an indigene of it's host ethnic group as Vice Chancellor? Is it Ife, ABU, UNN, or Unilag? So the protest is not against Igbos per se, neither is it against the person of the Acting V.C : Prof Mrs Gbenedio, but it points to the fact that a Bini Vice Chancellor is long overdue for the University of Bini (Pun intended) I hope you guys get the picture.

I wholeheartedly endorse the agitation.

GLO CAF Award; D’Banj’dumped for P-Square

A new twist to the face off between telecommunication giant GLO and rave of the moment musician, D’Banj evolved over the week with the news that the Kokomaster who was billed to perform at the GLO sponsored CAF awards has been replaced.

D’Banj performingIn his place, the telecom giant recruited the services of the popular group P-Square. The new appointees were the same group that were brought in to take the place of the Kokomaster at the on-going nation wide Rock and Rule concert.

D’Banj who was to earn N3million for the CAF show allegedly incurred the wrath of the Chairman of the telecom company Otumba Mike Adenuga following his demand for an upward review of his fee at the Rock and Rule concert.

He had all the incandescent opportunity beckoning on him but he chose to blow them away like an undesirable gold-dust.

The rave-on artiste, Dayo Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj who was recently appointed the Glo Ambassador and the lead artiste in the “Rock and Rule concert going on in some parts of the country with a very juicy spur to perform is already sulking after he was alleged to have been given the boot by the mobile communication company.

A branded Land Rover SUV jeep worth over N14miilion was given to him as GLO Ambassador. And this, sources said was in addition to a tidy sum of N70million paid to him for undisclosed reasons.
It is also on record that D’banj remains the only musician on the Rule and Rock concert trails who were paid upfront.

So for the 18 shows he was billed to perform in, he was paid N36million at N2million per show our source further hinted. Like a pack of cards that have fallen apart, not only has the artiste been dropped from the concerts, he has also been asked to refund part of the money he was allegedly paid. And this money our source is in the neighbourhood of N18million.

Like the famous Oliver Twist, The Kokomaster had hardly performed in eight shows when he sprang his surprise. Against the N2million he was getting per show, he wanted more via the letter he sent through his lawyers.

He wanted N4million a sum he figured befitted his new status as GLO’s most prominent Ambassador. But what his lawyers didn’t tell him, GLO told him. “My friend you are indispensable”. And pronto he was like hot potatoes, dropped from the line up.

And for this misadventure, he lost out and was immediately replaced with the rampaging duo called P-Square and Gango Aso exponent 9ice

Sensing trouble when no reply was forth coming from GLO, he made a detour and sang a new song. “It wasn’t me” he chorused.

“My lawyers acted without my consent” were his lame excuse. And so what if the lawyers had succeeded perhaps, his song would have been “I’m the Champion Bubbler”.

Anyway we gathered that he has been running from pillar to post and trying every thing possible to apologise but that has so far not paid off.

At the Rock & Rule concert in Ibadan couple of weeks ago, he was stopped by the authorities of Glomobile from getting on stage.

Would have if you are a GLO staff? In his absence other GLO Ambassadors had enough time to thrill the audience. He was said to have angrily left the place unannounced (As if anyone missed him).

Again at Akure, last week and smarting with the belief that his apology would have restored him back to the glorious relationship he once enjoyed with Dr Adenuga, The Kokomaster according to sources prepared to storm the Akure show in a big way. His plan according to our source was to put up a classical show that will hold even the GLO author

ities spell bound. And again, he was told in clear terms that he could not perform.

Meanwhile, we gathered that the CEO of the company, Dr. Adenuga has directed that he be replaced with P-Square. .

Pundits wonder that the error could further plunge him into losing further opportunities from the communication company and even others.

The much talked about customised phones which glo mobile intends to bring in with the crooner’s photograph may be another delusion for the music sensation.
But one thing the telecom giant didn’t do Showtime gathered was invalidate his contract at the GLO sponsored CAF awards.

“ He is on the bill and has been paid for it. He will be performing at the event and that’s for certain”.
