Can anyone tell me how many boundles of conventional local pan will be good for one bedroom flat. One visit toilet, kitchen, sitting room and the one room with toilet. The total wideness of 13ft and the longness is 32ft. The roofing is normal sloppy roofing no style just direct sloppy to the back.

How many plank, like how many 2by 3, how many 2 by 4 can finish the rafters.

I will be very happy to get good reply from my good people here. Thanks in advance.
Why not just engage a carpenter to give u the total qauntity of materials needed?

first, they cost different amounts, so it boils down to your taste and size of your wallet.

- Stainless Steel is the best, makes the house look elegant but costs maybe thrice as much.
It is also a bit difficult to bend, if your railings are circular in nature, like in a spiral staircase.

- Galvanized iron is next in terms of pricing but it is a bit difficult to get Painst that would adhere to it perfectly (except you dont want to paint it...and our Nigerian version of galvanized steel are nt really good as som eof them will start rusting after a few years!)

- Iron is down the list, not too costly, easy to bend and does not break!
But cannot give you the class of stainless Steel, for example.

If you can squeeze the money, use Stailess Steel, it is about 21K - 25K per Square-meter, depending on the design.

Hope this helps.

Well exlained sir.
Those rods we use for reinforcement are they also galvanized or just pure iron?

U think the approach govt. will use in tackling ebola will also be employed for sanitary pad? My God!!!
The best STI control method is to distribute condom for free, since considerable number of nigerians can't do without sex. If the widespread of STI goes higher than this, u think u can enter any foreign country as a nigerian? d stigma will be there...It will automatically kill our economy growth. They aren't just distributing condoms, is all for the betterment of our nation..It is far different for distributing sanitary pad for free...
Tell them my brother
How will i benefit from sanitary pad subsidy as a citizen? Lol
You ladies should work hard and take care of your bills

All depend on source of location. Lagos only hv plaster from Epe, Badagry, while Abeokuta, Sagamu supplies to close terrain to Lagos, cost differ from location to location.
Thank u very much sir.
But generally, which is costlier between sharp sand & plaster sand?
My manson told me plaster sand is much more expensive, just wanted to confirm.

The challenge with laterite is controlling its moisture content. So if you are filling land that is permanently flooded, then Laterite will never work since you cant control the water content before compaction
Okay clear now.
Sharp sand is still better for filling waterlogged land, because of inability to control laterite water content before compaction?
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Barryton: 7:36am On Apr 16, 2018
adanny01:
Exactly.

However, if not done properly, it would lead to a disaster where the sand would have been a better option.

That is why there is no cheaper substitute for the sub base material for road construction other than laterite. It is also the cause of most road failures in Nigeria and beyond when not done properly.
This is why i have always maintained every contributor is important on this thread. That is the only way we can have contrary views & learn.
Thanks for sharing your findings, so many renowned engineers in this thread have always opined that laterite is a no go area for filling in water logged areas, i just hope they will come out to counter this your position so we can learn. But i still have my reservations, because my little experience with laterite shows it doesn't go well with water. How to make it compact properly in a waterlogged area is what i still don't get.

adanny01:
I know you disagree, these things are not always what they seem. It is like getting an online diagnosis for certain symptoms but nothing beats physical examination by an experienced Doctor.

Porosity is the reason sharp sand looks like it doesnt expand but infact it is most affected by water than laterite. I did permeability tests on laterite that made me sleep in the lab during my UG project. Like i said with the modification, you need to do proper compaction on the laterite and it beats sand any day any time.

Have you ever seen sand on road construction? In fact, if you meet a sand deposit on road construction you have to remove it same way you would with clay.

Think of it this way, sand allows water level to rise within it but properly compacted laterite stops water level.Water is the enemy here.
Are u suggesting laterite is more suitable for filling in waterlogged areas?

What they have in lagos is best classified as soft sand & not sharp sand.
I presume the salty content brings about the soft sand?

Chekitaut:
I think the issue of sand is said many times here, the only way out of sand is knowing the purpose.

for concrete avoid Lagos sharp sand... use odo ogun or Stone dust, Lagos dredging sharp sand or soft sand is best use for setting of block, moulding of blocks,
I agree with u. Lagos is extremely wet, i believe it has affected its sand.

KolaShangOne:
Don't get me wrong o.. Not all white sand have high salt content. All those construction companies have a particular mining site and must have analysed properties of their materials including sand and applied possible treatment before using it.

If you prefer the white one, find white one with the properties you need and use it. Aesthetics is also a good reason for preference.
@emboldened Who get that time, i no be julius berger oo. lol
Maybe because lagos is a riverine area, reason for the salty sand. We don't experience it in my area in Edo state. Maybe because of presence of less river, both the white & red like sand are used for concrete works.
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Barryton: 2:56pm On Apr 15, 2018
KolaShangOne:
Well.. They are kind of different.

Salt content in these sands differ. The whitish ones tend to have more salt which can attack the concrete and iron rods in your foundation.
So it isn't advisable to use white sharp sand for concrete works?
Because i do see big construction companies using it on bridges & i have always preferred it to the red like type because of its fine finish.

We recently went over this actually. Maybe 5 to 7 pages ago. Spyder880 chimed in.
I just withdraw a steel tank stand i gave to a welder, because i was sceptical abt his price & proficiency. Up till date we still relate peacefully & he will be visiting my site tomorrow. I believe every client have the right to withdraw a job if he is having double mind and i don't think is enough reason for the contractor to start making obnoxious statements about the client. It is absolutely rude and kills future relationship. People are watching, how we relate with people matters alot. If there is anyone i respect most in this forum is abdulwastecx, i haven't see him make snide remark for once. That is what i call professionalism, it cuts across how u relate with people, it isn't all about doing a good job. Just an advise!
