PoliticsWhat Do You Expect by BASD(op): 5:10pm On Mar 04, 2017
Expecting a leader who could not make himself rich to make his country rich is like expecting an illiterate to teach you to read.

Case in study: President Muhammadu Buhari. What wealth did he create for himself in his private life? Little to nothing. See how the economy performed under him-badly. We became poorer, entered recession and Naira depreciated.

Case in study: Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo. He made wealth for himself in his private business. See how the economy is performing under him-very good. We are richer, the recession is easing and Naira is appreciating! The facts speak for themselves!

Rotimi Amaechi: Leave Trash For LAWMA
Again, Nigeria's Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has left the issues raised by my response to his fallacious interview to impugn my character in a vicious ad hominem attack on me. My response is as follows:

Why should I respond to the trash that Rotimi Amaechi has thrown at me? Out of the fullness of the heart a man speaks. He has trash within him so he always vomits trash.

I do not react to trash. I leave trash to LAWMA. Rotimi Amaechi, with his pot belly and ill fitting designer clothes, is trash. My dear minister, here is the address of Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA: No. 3 Iddo - Yard, Ijora Olopa,
Lagos State. You can report for duty there since it is your natural habitat!

Rather than trash, I will prefer to respond to issues. The issues are very clear. Rotimi Amaechi falsely accused ex-President Goodluck Jonathan of pilfering $49.8 billion in his interview.

I proved that he lied. I proved that the maker of that allegation, the then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi later withdrew it after he was faced with evidence of its falsity.

I proved that in February of 2014, the then CBN Governor wrote another letter to the Senate admitting that he did not know how much or if anything was unaccounted for saying (and I quote from Sanusi's letter) it could be “$10.8 billion or $12 billion or $19 billion or $21 billion — we do not know at this point”.

I also proved that Rotimi Amaechi was being hypocritical when he accused the former President of not saving because he was the one who, as then Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, insisted on September 21, 2012 that the saved funds in the Excess Crude Account be shared.

I proved that when former President Jonathan REFUSED to share the funds, Rotimi Amaechi led the NGF to sue the then Federal Government at the Supreme Court and got a judgment compelling the Jonathan administration to share the money saved in the Excess Crude Account.

As a result of these actions, the Jonathan administration was forced to pay the 36 states of the federation a total of N2.92 trillion from the Excess Crude Account by 2014. Using the value of the Naira at that time that amount was just above $20 billion dollars. This was money that was to be saved.

Again Rotimi Amaechi proves that he is as irrelevant as the P in Psychology by spending his time making false allegations instead of fulfilling the mandate giving him to improve Nigeria's transport infrastructure. Is he so jobless?

But I am not surprised. His masters already saw just how jobless he is which is why during the 2015 campaigns he was reduced to a driver to President Muhammadu Buhari and Malam Nasir Elrufai. How the people of Rivers state suffered to the extent that their Governor became a chauffeur.

You can take a donkey to the River but you cannot force it to drink and you can make Amaechi a minister but you cannot force him to act like a minister.

His proper calling in life was perhaps to be a driver! Rotimi Amaechi had no money to finish the mono rail in his state, but he had $500,000 to spend on a one day dinner for Professor Wole Soyinka by his own admission. Is that not proof that he likes food more than knowledge and development?

When he became governor of Rivers state in 2007, the state treasury was fat and his belly was lean, by the time he left in 2015, the state treasury was lean and his belly was fat.

In fact, Rotimi Amaechi's belly swapped destiny with his state's treasury!
I have had a life before government. I worked at a bank, at Parliament, as VP of a political consulting firm and now I run my own profitable business.

Does Rotimi Amaechi have a life outside government? The only job that he has had outside government was a job as Peter Odili's PA at Pamo Clinics and Hospitals, Port Harcourt. Thereafter, he rode on Odili's coattails from one government post to the other. His only political skill being to betray one political godfather as soon as he finds a bigger one.

Government post is Rotimi Amaechi's oxygen and this was what former President Olusegun Obasanjo saw when he stopped him from becoming Governor in 2007 because he knew that a man who cannot generate wealth in his private business is condemned to forever be a sycophantic political prostitute.

With the benefit of hindsight, we now see that President Obasanjo was right!
If Rotimi Amaechi wants to shut my mouth then I challenge him to go to Rumukwurushi Market in Port Harcourt without security and shout Sai Baba, Sai Amaechi. If he survives the encounter, I will forever leave him and his potbelly alone.

EducationThe Cost Of Running A Private University In Nigeria: Some Facts And Figures. by BASD(op): 1:51pm On Feb 22, 2017
THE COST OF RUNNING A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA: SOME FACTS AND FIGURES.

A case of Covenant University.
There has been so much buzz about Church universities being expensive in Nigeria and I would like to address some of these controversies mostly using Covenant University as a case study.

*1. Tithes/Offerings are used to build Church Universities?
This seems to be a widely asserted theory. This is partly not true because most Churches don’t exactly use Tithes/
Offerings for building church universities but create special donations for that purpose.

Usually, the initial university capital projects are funded with these donations. We have to remember that the core mandate of any church isn’t not to create universities but to preach the gospel of Jesus and help the poor and that is done with tithes/offering to establish outreaches, pay pastoral salaries, build new churches etc.

*2. Donations can’t sustain recurrent expenditure!
While ‘excited’ members would usually agree to pay donations for the initial financial responsibility of the universities. No church would be able to get its church members to continually pay for its recurrent expenditure. In fact if any of these church schools were to try and choose continual donations as an alternative to ‘High’ tuition fees the next thing you would see are private university lecturers going on strike.

*3. Are Church universities profitable?
I do not believe any sane investor or business man would venture into the tertiary education sector with the aim of making profit. There is a reason why you wouldn’t find Otedola or Dangote investing in education.

If you do your research properly you would find that till today Covenant university hasn’t made any profit for its proprietors. Let us examine the revenue vs expenditure of Covenant university for example.

The Covenant university tuition(undergr
aduate) ranges between 600,000-800,000 depending on level/program but I would base it on 700k. There are about 7,000 students on campus at a given time so I multiply 700,000 by 7,000=4.9 billion. So the university’s revenue from tuition fees is about 4.9 billion.

When considering expenditure I would like to keep the value projections conservative. I believe Covenant University’s wage bill to be around 500 million/month but I would calculate using 400 million since that is the average wage bill for a Nigerian university. So 400 million x 12 months= 4.8 billion.

I currently don’t know how much CU pays to get electricity but reports had it that in 2012 the university spent 700 million naira on electricity. I would deliberately exclude expenditures like research grant, conference support, Infrastructure, field trips, medical services, internet provision e.t.c because I do not have real data to conclude how much they gulp yearly.

I must add though that in 2012, the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) donated engineering labs worth N200 million each to the 6 oldest public universities. That same year, CU built a major engineering lab with equipment alone worth N1.3 billion. Just using wage bill+Electricity however, the university has spent 5.5 billion when the tuition fee is about 4.8 billion. This proves the former NUC president, Peter Okebukola right when he said that ‘’Church universities were being too dependent on the Church’’. Also, the VC of Crawford did buttress the fact that the proprietor base still donates 500 million yearly to Crawford as subsidy. If these subsidies weren’t in place Church universities would have been more expensive than secular ones.

Assumed wealth of the Church: there is a saying in Yoruba land that ‘’the chicken sweats but the feathers won’t let you know’’. Would you believe that Oyedepo nearly missed his own deadline for the establishment of the first two halls of residence in Covenant University? because donations weren’t coming forth, until God miraculously provided.

‘Expensive’ tuition isn’t unique to Pentecostal Churches: whilst many choose to assault Pa. Adeboye and Bishop Oyedepo for charging high tuition fees. It is important to note that even Orthodox churches which are known not to be ‘’prosperity conscious’’ charge within the same bracket and sometimes much more e.g Veritas (Catholic) Bowen(Baptist), ECWA (Bingham), Godfrey Okoye (Catholic), Adventist (Babcock), JABU (CAC), Methodist(Wesley) e.t.c

Expensive tuition isn’t unique to Church universities alone; Church universities are ranked to be generally good with Covenant University averagely in top three on the two out of four most reputable rankings in the world-Webometrics and Times higher education. However Islamic schools that are not in the top 50 universities in Nigeria also charge about half a million or more (e.g Crescent), which is about the same thing CU charges.

*4. The underlining purpose for creating Church schools.
This is very important, the creation of church schools isn’t to actually teach physics and chemistry, but to create a spiritual revolution. Take that spiritual revolution away from CU, then it is by no means different from Afe Babalola university. Therefore, if you are a committed member of your church you are already a member of that movement. For instance I am not a Living Faith member, but by attending CU, I have joined myself to the spiritual movement of the church.

On the whole, apart from Afe Babalola University, Church Universities are the best private universities while on the average, church universities are cheaper than other private universities like Baze University, Abuja, American University of Nigeria, Nile Turkish University, Pan African University and Elizade University among others which on the average charge three times the amount paid in church owned universities.

Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi

tax fraud, Spanish media say.

His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail
term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m;
$4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.

They also face millions of euros in fines for
using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay used to

However, they are likely to avoid jail.

Under the Spanish system, prison terms under
two years can be served under probation.
The footballer and his father were found guilty of
three counts of tax fraud in Wednesday's ruling

During the trial, Lionel Messi claimed he "knew
nothing" about the management of his financial
affairs, saying he was "playing football".

Go and Pay Your Workers First, Anglican Bishop Tells Okorocha, Rejects His N200,000 Donation 

The Anglican Bishop of Owerri, Bishop Cyril C. Okorocha has rejected the N200, ooo donation of Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, as gathered by this medium the Money was given to the Church by the governor at the diocesan synod of the Anglican Communion that was held at St John’s Anglican Church, New Owerri.

While rejecting the money, the Anglican Bishop lambasted Governor Okorocha for inflicting sufferings on the people of Imo State through non-payment of their salaries and his “inhuman policies”.

Represented at the Synod by one Mr. Obinna Aharanwa, Okorrocha said the donation was to help the church in its development a donation which the Anglican Bishop rejected on basis that the Church will not want to share in the blame for governor’s non-payment of salaries and other financial predicaments which the State is facing at the moment.

Speaking the Bishop said; “Please take your money and return it to the government. If l take this money, lmo people will say that l have collected their pension money and worker’s salary. Go and pay pensioners and workers. I won’t touch this money.

“We want Governor Rochas Okorocha to publish his stewardship and show us what he is doing with lmo money. We need explanations”, Bishop Okorocha concluded.

Meanwhile, the Governor’s representative Mr. Obinna who felt embarrassed by the Bishop’s action went out of the meeting angry.

Politics4 States Don’t Have Qualified Ambassadorial Nominees, Says SGF by BASD(op): 8:02am On Jun 27, 2016
4 states don’t have qualified ambassadorial nominees, says SGF June 26

**Plateau, Ebonyi, Ondo, Bayelsa – without nominees have no career diplomats in the foreign service.

Babachir Lawal, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), says President Muhammadu Buhari followed due process in drawing up a list of ambassadorial nominees, contrary to the fears of the senate.

Last Wednesday, the senate had suspended the screening of 47 ambassadorial nominees whose names President Muhammadu Buhari sent for confirmation on June 9.

The upper legislative chamber cited irregularities in the process of selecting them, and summoned the SGF and Geoffrey Onyeama, foreign affairs minister, to explain the reason for the alleged irregularities.

But speaking at an interactive session with journalists at the weekend, Lawal explained that there were criteria set by the government to pick the nominees and that four states – Plateau, Ebonyi, Ondo, Bayelsa – without nominees did not have career diplomats in the foreign service. Lawal said the issues raised by the senate were minor, and that they could have been settled over a telephone call.

He, however, added that he would honour the invitation of the senate on July 11, the date set aside by the senate committee on foreign affairs to “interrogate” him and Onyeama. “Certainly, we will appear; we are law-abiding,” he said.

“We respect the national assembly and we respect the laws of the land. One thing however is clear; the constitution makes it clear that it is the prerogative of the president to nominate ambassadors and the criteria he will use to do so is also the constitutional right of the president. Whatever criteria he chooses to use is constitutional.

“I must say that we are disappointed that the national assembly took the decision, but at the last count, my recollection is that out of the 47 diplomat nominees, the 36 states were represented.

“Out of 36 states and the federal capital territory, while the constitution preaches federal character, it does not say that every state must be represented in any appointment, except of course in the case of ministers. Not in all other appointments, so the spirit of the constitution has been fully satisfied by having 32 ambassadors out of 36 plus one (FCT).

I believe that every objective analyst will agree with this.” Lawal expressed regrets that four states didn’t make it one way or the other, but maintained that it was “not necessarily on the criteria of seniority”.

“There are criteria and qualifications that are required to post you to go and represent Nigeria, not just because while in the foreign service or the civil service you were able to make grade level 16 or 17.
Quite a number of qualifications are needed. So even if you make that retirement criteria, service length or rank criteria, there are other criteria,” he said.
