The Rivers State Police Command on Friday said it has arrested 22 persons in connection with the killing of a policeman in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Port Harcourt.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, added that order had been restored in Oyigbo community following the attack by some faceless hoodlums who killed a cop, burnt a police post and a vehicle.



Omoni noted that the state Commissioner of Omoni noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, had ordered an investigation into the incidents, adding that security had been beefed up in the area to restore law and order.

He said, “Our SARS office in Oyigbo was attacked. We lost one of our personnel and our patrol vehicle was burnt. We have arrested 22 suspects in connection with the incident and investigation is ongoing.

“We have also stabilised the area and security beefed up.”

Meanwhile, a youth leader in Oyigbo community, who identified himself as Nwachuckwu, absolved Oyigbo community youths from the crime.

A Kaduna State High court sitting in the state capital has dismissed the motion of no-case-submission filed by the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria(IMN) Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zazaky and his wife Zeenat.

Both of them are standing trial on eight counts of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of the public peace, among other allegations.



The IMN leader who was brought to court on Tuesday morning amid tight security had asked the court to quash the Kaduna State government’s case against them for lack of evidence.

The Prosecution Counsel, Dari Bayero adopted these final arguments in the matter.

The IMN leader and his wife Zinat are standing trial on allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of the public peace, among other charges.

Marshall who spoke to reporters shortly after the adjournment said he prayed the court to dismiss the case for lack of evidence, devoid of any merit and could not stand before any court of law.

“We prayed the Court to dismiss the charges because they are devoid of any merit and will not stand before any court of law’’, Marshall said.

He said the third and fourth defendants in the case also charged with committing the offence had been discharged and acquitted by another Kaduna State High Court.

The police in Katsina State said to have arrested 43 persons suspected to be involved in Monday’s protest which led to the death of one person and injury to several others.

Youths in their numbers took to the street at Daddara village, in Jibia Local Government Area to reportedly protest over incessant security challenges facing their communities. They protested against activities killing, raping and rustling animals by bandits in the area.



They set car tires ablaze and blocked the road linking Jibia and Katsina metropolitan area and smashed the windscreen of vehicles passing by. The youths reportedly set the police border control post, Nigeria Immigration checkpoint, as well as several vehicles in the area, ablaze.

Although the youths said they were protesting incessant security challenges in the area, the police, however, attributed the protest to
smugglers’ activities.

The police, in a statement, said the riot was purportedly sponsored by smugglers and their agents targeting joint border patrol personnel and their facilities.

Police spokesperson, Gambo Isah, said the “Command received a report that some group of disgruntled youths and adults mainly from Daddara village, Jibia LGA of Katsina state, came out in their numbers, tumultuously rioting and protesting.



“The angry protesters were reported to have blocked the Katsina – Jibia Highway, exactly at Dadda village, smashing and destroying vehicles of security agencies and that of innocent citizens passing along the highway.

“They also set ablaze a Police Border Control Post – Daddara, Nigerian Immigration Service checkpoint – Danmasani, one police border patrol van (stationery), one Volkswagen Gulf III motor vehicle belonging to the officer in charge of the police border post, two AK 47 rifles belonging to Joint Border Drill Forces, one Ak 47 rifle and a pistol belonging to Police Mounted troops.

“The rioters smashed and damaged the windscreen of many motor vehicles of innocent commuters passing through the highway.

“Consequently, the command swiftly deployed teams of Police mobile Force (PMF) and conventional units to the area and have succeeded in arresting forty-three (43) persons found rioting.



“The teams have brought the situation under control as normalcy has returned to the area. But sadly one person lost his life during the fracas.

“Investigation revealed that the riot was purportedly sponsored by smugglers and their agents targeting joint border patrol personnel and their facilities.

The federal high court has ordered senator Elish Abbo to pay N50 million to Osimibibra Warmate as compensation for assaulting her.

The emergence of a video that captured Abbo assaulting Warmate in May 2019 led to widespread outrage and a teary-eyed public apology from the 42-year-old lawmaker.



The representative of Adamawa North Senatorial District was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal use of force and criminal assault when he was arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on July 8, 2019.

The magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, ruled in July 2020 that the evidence and exhibits tendered to the court did not prove criminal charges against the lawmaker.

The lawmaker was asked to pay a fine of N50 million and tender a public apology to his victim.

A report submitted last year by a Senate committee that investigated the case against Abbo is yet to be considered by the chamber because the case was also in court.

However, a fundamental rights suit filed by Warmate before the High Court found Abbo liable for the assault.

Senator Kabir Marafa has urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to implement the eighth Senate resolution on the bandits’ killings in Zamfara State to curtail the spillover to neighbouring Katsina and Sokoto.

Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central in the eighth Senate, urged the Federal Government to extend a “small fraction” of what was being done in the North-East to Zamfara State

The resolution was passed towards the end of the 8th National Assembly, where we called on the Federal Government to extend a small fraction of what has been done in North-East in Zamfara, by constituting a Presidential Initiative Committee on Zamfara State, give the Committee seed money of N10 billion and the same amount to be given every year for 10 years to assist the situation on the ground,” he said.

The former lawmaker stated this while addressing newsmen shortly after he gave out 13 female orphans and his daughter for marriage in Kaduna on Saturday.

The 13 female orphans, according to the former lawmaker, lost their parents to bandits attacks in Zamfara State. According to him, between 2011 and 2019, there are over 40,000 orphans whose parents were killed by bandits in Zamfara.

“So, I am calling on Mr President as the father of the nation to look at that Senate resolution of 2019 and implement it because that is the only way we can curtail the spillover we are now seeing in Katsina, Sokoto and other places.

“When people are hungry and somebody gives them an N100,000 and AK47 rifle, they will follow the person, but if these orphans are properly catered for and trusted persons are appointed to manage the resources, we can tame the monster called banditry to the barest minimum,”

The Federal Government has put up for sale a jet in the presidential fleet, Hawker 4000 aircraft with registration number, 5N-FGX/: RC 066.

The business-size jet which entered into service in December 2011, has capacity for nine passengers and three crew members.

Findings indicate that only 73 Hawker 4000 aircraft were manufactured by Hawker Beechcraft between 2001 and 2013 and they were sold for $22.91m each as of 2012.

The FG in a published advert on Wednesday disclosed that the aircraft with a range of 3,190-nautical mile had flown for 1,768 hours.

It said the aircraft could be inspected at the Presidential Air Fleet’s hangar located at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Sokoto State Hisbah Commission on Monday confirmed the arrest of three people alleged to have circulated a video on social media while sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

The victim was scheduled to get married on Oct. 17, but the marriage was called off as a result of the viral video circulated by the suspects.

Dr Adamu Kasarawa, the state Hisbah Commandant, told newsmen in Sokoto that the principal suspect, son of a political appointee in the state, and his two friends would be handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution

Kasarawa said that the commission had concluded investigations into the matter and would ensure the prosecution of the case.

The 20-year-old Toluwalase Kembi, a polytechnic student awaiting industrial training who visit her friend in the Ikorodu area sadly led to her death allegedly by a boyfriend who claimed he was paid N2m to carry out the act.

The 33-year-old suspect, Owolabi Yusuf, also known as alfa, is now cooling his heels in the custody of the Elere Police Division in the Agege area, where the matter was reported to.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim, who lived with her parents on Orile Road, TabonTabon, Agege, had gone to sleep over in Yusuf’s place in the Ladeja area of Ikorodu, on July 28, when she was allegedly clubbed to death and her body reportedly cut into pieces for ritual purposes.

The family told our correspondent that the police had yet to recover the corpse.

The police at Elere division were able to arrest Yusuf in the third week of August 2020 upon fleeing to Ilorin, Kwara State, after allegedly carrying out the act.

Police in Rivers State has arrested two pastors for allegedly raping a 27-year old corp member.

The corps member who is observing her primary assignment at the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The pastors, identified as Austin Emmanuel and Peter Davies, are currently being detained at the State Criminal and Investigation and Intelligence Department, Port Harcourt.

Emmanuel reportedly invited the victim to his house for an indoor birthday party and in the course of the celebration, he was later joined by Davies.

It was gathered that the suspects offered to pray for the victim and in the middle of the prayer, they applied a-yet-to-be-identified liquid on her face which made her unconscious.

Speaking with journalists, the corps member said she experienced pains in her private parts after regaining consciousness.

She said, “Actually, it was after I regained consciousness that I was feeling pain in my vagina. I told my mum and she reported to the police and they said that they should take me to doctors without borders for a checkup. I found out that I was fingered according to the report and saw bruises seen all over my body.”

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Kano State, has arrested a 29-year-old housewife, Jamila Abubakar, over the alleged murder of her stepson, Muhammad Bashir.

Mr Shehu Umar, NAPTIP Zonal Commander in charge of Kano State, confirmed the arrest in an interview with Journalist on Thursday in Kano.

Umar disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on Thursday after she beat her seven-year-old stepson to death at Tarauni Kasuwa area of Kano metropolis.

He recalled that the Agency had invited the suspect over alleged child abuse after the deceased was rescued from the suspect in the past few months.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday, re-arraigned one Alice John and her boyfriend, Fadi Alloush, before Justice Bayo Taiwo of the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, for fraud involving the sale of charcoal.

The lovers were re-arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining the sum of N17.5m under false pretences.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, following which the prosecution counsel, Dr Ben Ubi, applied for a trial date, while the defence counsel, Olukunle Kamisi, prayed the court to allow the bail earlier granted the defendants to subsist.

Justice Taiwo granted the defendants’ prayers.

“The bail shall subsist and, in the event, where there is a delay on the defendants’ part, their bail will be revoked,” the judge said.

Justice Taiwo adjourned the matter till October 8, 2020, for trial.

The defendants were initially arraigned before Justice Iyabo Yerima of the Oyo State High Court on March 17, 2020, but were re-arraigned on Wednesday following the reassignment of the case to Justice Taiwo.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday upheld the conviction and the 14 years imprisonment imposed on a pastor, Basil Princewill, for raping a 14-year-old girl.

The pastor with the appellation of ‘Apostle’ was also said to have attempted to abort the pregnancy resulting from the sexual scam. A three-man panel, in a unanimous judgment read by Justice Stephen Adah, held that it found nothing wrong with the June 25, 2019 judgment of Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which convicted the pastor.

Justice Adah ruled that Princewill’s appeal against the lower court’s verdict lacked merit and struck it out.

He ruled, “Having looked at the arguments in the appeal and the records, as well as the evidence adduced in the case, I hold that the lower court did not do anything wrong by sentencing the appellant to seven years imprisonment.

“The appeal failed and the judgment of the lower court is hereby upheld.”

Princewill, who was then 33 years old, was said to have forcefully had sexual intercourse with the victim between July 27 and December 31, 2011, at Mountain Mover Ministry International and his house in Nyanya, Abuja.

The victim was said to have been impregnated in the process.

He was said to have threatened to kill her if she dared to tell anyone.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that four of its personnel who were abducted by bandits on Monday had been rescued with the help of other security agencies.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), ACM Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday in Abuja.

The 26 personnel of FRSC were reportedly attacked while travelling from Sokoto and Kebbi States Command of the Corps for a training programme at FRSC Academy, Udi on Monday.

it was reported that two were killed, 10 were unaccounted for, eight escaped unhurt, while six were injured.

Kazeem, however, said that seven of the attacked personnel were currently receiving treatment in Abuja, adding that six were still abducted.

According to him, out of the 26 attacked on Monday, four has been rescued with the help of security agencies while six were still abducted.

“Two died on Monday. Presently, seven officers are receiving treatment in Abuja,” he said.

The twenty-eight other suspects were Kingsley Essien; Tobiloba Adenuga; Tope Ayodele; Rasheed Mujib; Oladipo Opeyemi; Saadu Muktar; Oladejo Hammed; Hammed Tope; Ameachi Umenyi, Salauden Adam and Afolabi Gafar.

Imo State University, Owerri, recently has set up a committee to investigate the authenticity of the video footage circulating on the social media in which the Head of Department of Biochemistry of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Agumuo, was allegedly having sex with one of his students.

The bride-to-be who went missing was found buried in a shallow grave and her security guard has been accused of being responsible for her murder.

The 35-year-old Joy Obiageli who was reported missing by her family two weeks ago, and all efforts to locate her were not successful.



The mystery behind the sudden disappearance began to unravel following a tip-off that her security guard was seen driving one of her cars with his wife and children inside. which served as a tip-off.



This sparked an investigation and police searched the missing woman’s compound to find a shallow grave.



According to correspondent Emeka Chukwujindu who was at the scene, the police in Asaba exhumed the woman’s corpse and it was discovered that she was made to suffer before she died.

The report has it that she was stabbed several times on her stomach and her throat was slit while her hands and legs were tied.

It is alleged that Joy Obiageli was allegedly killed by her own security guard named Mr Sunday from Niger state who buried her in a shallow grave in their compound.

Obiageli’s neighbour, a Nollywood movie director named Mr Nonso Ekene has also been arrested and is being interrogated.

The reason for her murder is still a mystery.

Sympathisers gathered at number 4 Anene Street as a team of policemen and pathologists exhumed the body of the 35-year-old woman.

The Delta State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Falaye said the investigation is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, videos of the deceased’s family crying and asking for justice have been shared online.

The Nigeria Police Force has charged to court Mr Abdulmumuni Danga, Kogi State Commissioner for Water Resources, for assaulting and raping a lady by name, Elizabeth over a Facebook post.

This is coming five months after the event took place and three months after the commissioner was first invited for questioning by the police.



Danga was charged on a seven-count charge including rape to brutality, coercion and torture.



He is charged alongside one Success Omadivi and they are to be arraigned at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Judicial Division.

It was recalled that Danga was invited for questioning on June 2, 2020, at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gender Unit, Force Intelligence Bureau, FCID, Abuja and was released after pressure from Governor Yahaya Bello.

In the charge sheet signed by ACP Effiong Asuquo, Esq, Prosecuting Counsel for the police, the case will be prosecuted by the police on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He was also charged for falsifying documents and threatening medical officer to forge test result.

In count one of the charges, Danga was accused of having carnal knowledge of Elizabeth Onyeniyi without her consent; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.



In count two of the charges, the police said Danga with other persons now at large; in Lokoja willfully inflicted physical injury on Elizabeth by flogging her with electric cable wire.

Other charges read,

“That you ABDULMUMUNI DANGA, SUCCESS OMADIVI ‘F’ with other persons now at large; on or about the 29th day of March 2020 at Lokoja; within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did coerce one Elizabeth Oyeniyi to kneel down by torturing her; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 3 Of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

“That you ABDULMUMUNI DANGA, SUCCESS OMADIVI ‘F’ With other persons now at large; on or about the 29th day of March 2020 at Lokoja; within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did create or falsify a Facebook chat purporting same to be a chat between Elizabeth Onyeniyi ‘F’ and unknown person where Elizabeth Oyeniyi ‘F’ confirmed that she was not raped; and there was no test done at the hospital because the doctor was scared to issue report so that she will not lose her job; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 7 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

“That you ABDULMUMI_JNI DANGA ‘M’ with other persons now at large; on or about the 29th day of March 2020 at Lokoja; within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did falsify an audio recording purporting same to be the audio of Dr Chinonyerem Welle, Medical Director, Police Hospital, Area 1, Garki, Abuja saying that she issued a medical report for the rape and assault of Elizabeth Onyeniyi ‘F’ unlawfully; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 7 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

“That you ABDULMUMUNI DANGA ‘M’, SUCCESS OMADIVI ‘F’ with other persons now at large; on or about the 29th day of March 2020 at Lokoja; within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did falsify an audio recording purporting same to be a lady talking to another female saying that Elizabeth Onyeniyi ‘F’ confessed to her that she was not raped by the Defendant, ABDULMUMIJNI DANGA ‘M’ but that it was Natasha that asked her to say she was raped; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 7 Of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.



“That you ABDULMUMUNI DANGA ‘M’ with other persons now at large; on or about the 29th day of March 2020 at Lokoja; within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did falsify an audio recording purporting same to be the audio of Dr Chinonyerem Welle, Medical Director, Police Hospital, Area 1, Garki, Abuja saying that she issued a medical report for the rape and assault of Elizabeth Onyeniyi ‘F’ unlawfully; and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 7 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.”

The victim had in a posted on her Facebook wall urged the commissioner to assist his kid sister and other members of his family financially.

NEW HIV TEST KIT APPROVED-FG,
The Federal Government has approved the inclusion of Wondfo HIV I and II rapid test kits for use to stem the spread of the scourge in the country.

The National Coordinator, National AIDS/STI Control Programme (NASCP) Dr Akudo Ikpeazu, made the this known while presenting the evaluation report on the kit, on Tuesday in Abuja.

“The Wondfo rapid test kit could be used as a confirmatory test because of its high specification of 99.4 per cent,” she said.

The coordinator said that in 2019, the Federal Ministry of Health( FMOH) approved the conduct of the laboratory performance evaluation of Wondfo HIV I and II rapid test kit.

“The result of the evaluation which was conducted at the reference testing laboratory Public Health in Vitro Diagnostic Laboratory, Lagos” showed that Wondfo rapid test kit sensitivity, was 99.5 per cent and its specificity was 99.4 per cent.

“The rapid test kit has an accuracy of 99.4 per cent with positive and negative predictive values of the kit to the Gold Standard as 99.3 per cent and 99.5 per cent respectively.

“These results met the requirements for the kit to be included in the first-line screening test of the HIV testing algorithm in Nigeria,” she explained.

She disclosed that Nigeria had conducted some rounds of evaluation of HIV rapid test kits, using the World Health Organisation(WHO) guidelines for appropriate evaluation of HIV testing technologies in Africa, where three phases of the evaluation were recommended.

She noted that these phases were, laboratory-based, field-based and continuous monitoring of the performance of the algorithm.

Ikpeazu said that the National HIV testing algorithms were developed from these rounds of the evaluation conducted and all the test kits were antibody-based kits.

No Fewer than 41 journalists have been attacked at different locations in the country in the course of their duties between January and August 2020, the International Press Centre (IPC), says.

IPC Programme Officer, Mrs Melody Akinjiyan-Lawal, made the revelation during a webinar on Edo and Ondo State elections in Benin on Monday.



The webinar was organised by the IPC, in conjunction with the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) for journalists.

Akinjiyan-Lawal, who spoke on journalists’ safety during elections, said of the 41 attacks, 35 were on male, while five were on female and one was on a media house.

She noted that the nature of the attacks was in the form of harassment, threats to life, physical abuse and verbal assault as well as damage to work equipment, among others.

The programme officer explained that journalists needed to take cognisance of the fact that nothing had changed in the way and manner politicians viewed election to be a do-or-die affair.

“So journalists must report effectively while staying safe in the dangerous electoral terrain we still operate.



“In this regard, it is important for journalists to situate their role and interest in the context of the interest of the two major stakeholders which are the politicians and the people.

“The candidates and their supporters in these elections will not care whose ox is gored for them to actualise their ambition.

“Journalists need to keep abreast of this fact so as not to be victims of any crossfire,” she said.

According to Akinjiyan-Lawal, journalists covering the Edo and Ondo elections must not be partisan but must be smart and ensure that they moved in groups during the exercise.

In his remarks, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, spoke on the proactive measures taken by the commission to address security concerns ahead of the polls.

Oyekanmi said consultations with the Inter Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Edo and Ondo were on-going to ensure the safety of everybody during and after the elections.



“About two weeks ago, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, led a delegation to meet with the revered Oba of Benin, to ask him to intervene and appeal to political actors to allow a peaceful election.

“The respected monarch promised to invite them to his palace for interaction and he has already done so.

“Plans have also been concluded for all the 14 political parties participating in the election to sign a peace accord in the coming days,” he said.

According to him, with all the efforts, it is hoped that the election will be held peacefully.
