Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Tuesday signed the Ondo State anti-open grazing bill into law, Donald Ojogo, the commissioner for information and orientation, has said.

Mr Ojogo said in a statement that the decision was in line with the resolution of the Southern Governors’ Forum at its last meeting in Lagos where September 1st was set as the deadline for governors in southern Nigeria to sign the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law.

“This is worthwhile and a very laudable development aimed at stemming needless instances of skirmishes, conflicts as well as infractions on the enviably peaceful disposition of the good people of Ondo State,” the statement said.

n the face of the calculated and practised indifference of the regime of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired) to the human carnage currently ongoing in Nigeria, a debate has ensued about the legitimacy and practicability of community self-defence as a counterpoise strategy.

The mere fact that these questions arise is proof positive that Nigeria currently suffers a squalid anomaly. Communities should not be seeking to defend themselves if there is a capable government. When, therefore, government proves incapable or unwilling to protect everyone equally, communities must exercise a duty of collective self-defence. The alternative is to suffer voluntary liquidation.

In the first six months of 2021, over 6,000 people were reported killed in atrocity violence across Nigeria. As bad as these numbers are, the Sultan of Sokoto, no less, has pointed out that the scale of the killings in Nigeria is grossly under-reported. Rather than abate, the massacres appear to be intensifying in the second half of the year.

In the week after the lavish wedding of General Buhari’s son, Yusuf, in Kano the penultimate week of August 2021, Plateau State in north-central Nigeria has been overtaken by atrocity killings to the point where hospitals and mortuaries have become overwhelmed by the scale of the human tragedy.

The response of General Buhari to this orgy of atrocity killings has been a cynically complicit and practised silence.

Routinely, General Buhari’s spokesmen have sought to trifle with the scale of the tragedy or relish it. In the aftermath of the tragically humiliating attack by terrorists on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), which killed at least two military officers and left another seriously injured (not to mention the abducted), presidential communications hitman, Garba Shehu, flippantly sniffed that the attack may have been politically motivated.

Having failed in December 2020 to persuade Nigerians to be grateful for exponential growth in insecurity in the country, presidential adviser, Femi Adesina, found in the terror attack on the NDA his moment to brand Nigerians “ungrateful” for being unwilling any longer to credit a president who never for a moment took seriously his oath to protect everyone in Nigeria equally.

Confronted with the reality of a government led by a president who cannot be bothered to show he cares about the mass cull of fellow humans and citizens, the governor of General Buhari’s home state, Katsina, Aminu Bello Masari, has emerged as an unlikely leader in the advocacy to people arise self -defence as an effective response to this Nigerian crisis of insecurity, repeatedly exhorting communities to buy guns, organize and defend themselves.

In this advocacy, the Governor has high profile fellow travellers, such as Defence Minister, Bashir Magashi , himself also a retired army General; and the plateau state house of assembly. The Nigerian State is itself not neutral on this, having supported and invested in the Civilian Joint Task Force,cjtf, since 2013 to assist in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast.

This high profile advocacy for self-defence raises questions both legal and practical. Let’s begin with the legal: does self-defence have any basis in law? The short answer to this is that in Nigeria, self-defence is indeed a constitutional right. Under section 14(2)(b) of Nigeria’s 1999 constitution, “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

Accordingly, section 17(2)(b) of the same constitution requires that “the sanctity of the human person shall be recognized” and to reinforce these, section 33(2)(a) makes self-defence lawful when undertaken in “defence of any person from unlawful violence or for the defence of property.”

The question may be asked whether this right of self-defence in Nigerian law is available to groups or communities. The short answer is yes. A 96-year-old retired soldier, Pa Joseph Owherhi who is married to eight women and blessed with 50 children and many grandchildren, has been arrested in the Suleja area of Niger state by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA for dealing in illicit drugs.

Boko Haram insurgents may replicate what the Taliban did in Afghanistan here in Nigeria, The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, has warned that Nigeria Government should watch out or retreat it.

AYCF National President, Yerima Shettima said Boko Haram insurgents may take over the Nigerian government as the Taliban did in Afghanistan.

Speaking exclusively in an interview, Shettima faulted the decision of the Federal Government to rehabilitate repentant Boko Haram members.

He warned that reintegrating them into society could be dangerous because the possibility of regrouping to attack again is there.

Fountain of Liberation Church pastor, Prophet Wisdom Okoronkwo, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl in the Ikotun area of the state.

The victim was living with the pastor on the instructions of her mother, who is a member of the church.

The pastor was said to have taken advantage of the situation to allegedly defile the victim.

The victim’s uncle, who identified himself simply as Philip, said after she informed him of the incident, he reported the case to a non-governmental organisation, the Esther Child Rights, in Ikotun.

The dry cleaner said, “I was in my shop on May 7, 2021, when I saw my niece crying. A motorcyclist, who is well known to me, brought her to my shop and the man told me that when she asked him to take her to a pharmacy, he conveyed her to my shop to prevent her from indulging in self-medication.

“When I asked my niece what happened, she said the prophet had been sexually abusing her and threatened her not to tell anyone.

I observed that she had been severely beaten as she was crying profusely. She also reported the case to my elder brother and sister.”

The victim said her mother forced her to live with the pastor, whom she allegedly started sexually abusing two weeks after she moved in with him.

She said, “I met the prophet on June 1, 2020, he had a brief conversation with my mother and I didn’t know what it was about.

Three days after, the prophet asked if I’d like to live with him and I told him that I would think about it. My mother pleaded with me to live with him and I accepted.

“After living with him for two weeks, he woke me up in the middle of the night and began to plead with me to allow him to have sex with me, but I refused.

Suddenly, he forced himself on me and sexually abused me and that was how it started. The prophet told me that I would run mad if I ever tell anyone; so, I was scared to tell my mum about it.

“But I told Ugo, the son of my mum’s friend; I also told my mum’s sister and her fiancé, who is the assistant pastor of the church, and they believed me.

When the prophet found out, he denied it. When he got home, he threatened me to recant my statements else he would mercilessly beat me, but I refused.”

The victim’s mother, who gave her name only as Chinyere, said her daughter was framing the prophet, adding that she instructed her to live with him because she was troublesome.

Deji Adeyanju Co-Convener of the Concerned Nigerians Group has insinuated that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is sponsoring bandits and should be held responsible for the upsurge in security issues in the country.

Federal Government yesterday raised an alarm over fake COVID-19 vaccines currently in circulation in Africa.

It stated that about 3,000 of the fake vaccines, which were Africa-bound from China, have been intercepted.

The Director of Hospital Services of the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Dr Adebimpe Adebiyi, made these known in a letter dated March 26, 2021, to the Chief Medical Directors/Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions.

She said: “The ministry is in receipt of a letter from the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 regarding the arrest of about 3,000 doses of fake COVID-19 vaccines which were Africa-bound from China.

“The report further indicates that the fake COVID-19 vaccines are already in circulation in Africa.

The governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle has said he would build RUGA settlements for bandits who accept the state’s amnesty.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Zailani Baffa made this announcement.

RUGA is the acronym for Rural Grazing Area, Baffa said the state government has granted amnesty to some bandits who were in Rehabilitation precess at various Correctional Centres in the state.

He also said “Governor Matawalle has already told the world that he has chosen dialogue as a means of ending banditry in the state and has granted amnesty to many repentant bandits.

Arrangements are also in top gear to provide shelter to the repentant bandits through the construction of RUGA settlements in some parts of the state.”

The governor’s adviser added that following the tour to the state by Sheikh Ahmad Gummi, there were so many bandits who were willing to repent and join the peace accord embarked upon by the governor.

The federal government says it has started discussions with China for Nigeria to have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, while briefing reporters on Tuesday after a bilateral meeting with the visiting Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, said the government is engaging China to help the country access vaccine for Nigeria, noting that China is among the countries that have developed COVID-19 vaccines.

Onyeama noted that China has immensely assisted Nigeria during the emergence of COVID-19, saying China’s donation of protective equipment has positively impacted the nation in the fight against COVID-19 during the first wave.

Meanwhile, the minister has also revealed that plans are underway to have a direct flight from Nigeria to China.

“We want to establish a direct air link with China. We hope that very soon, a Nigerian carrier would be carrying out scheduled flights to China in the not too distant future,” Onyeama said.......

Many people from the South-Eastern part of Nigeria have thrown their weight behind the creation of the Eastern Security Network by the Member of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

The group launched the regional outfit via a live Facebook broadcast, which the leader Nnamdi Kanu explained, was necessitated by the current security situation in major parts of the country giving to the fact that Nigeria Government has failed in his duty which is to protect lives and property leaving every Nigerian an option to protect selves and regions.



At the beginning of the podcast, he said, “We have decided to take it upon ourselves to defend the land of Biafra. We are determined and persistent, and we are not going to stop until we eradicate every form of terrorism. We are going to defend our land from terrorism. IPOB said it was moved to establish Eastern Security Network (ESN) by the failure of governments of the two regions to set up regional security outfits like their counterparts in other regions despite the worsening insecurity in the country.

International Cable News Network, CNN, said its report on the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki toll plaza on October 20, 2020, was “carefully and meticulously researched”.

CNN stated this in a report on Thursday in response to comments by the Nigerian Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, that the news platform practised “irresponsible journalism” by relying on fake videos sourced from social media to produce its report.



CNN had published an investigative report this week claiming soldiers fired live ammunition directly at protesters at the Lekki toll gate, a claim which Mohammed denied on Thursday.

officers of the Nigeria Police Force have blocked the road leading to African Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos, in a bid to prevent a meeting on #EndSARS protest from taking place.

The meeting, which was organised by Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was originally scheduled to be held on Tuesday at the African Shrine.



There are over 20 police vans with armed policemen present to prevent people from accessing the venue.



Recall that the Lagos State Police Command on Monday threatened to close the African Shrine if the meeting went ahead.

South African pay-TV company Multichoice has paid R1.3 billion ($81million) -and may still pay another R500 million more for a 20 percent stake in Nigerian sports bet company Betking. It was disclosed on Thursday. The company bought the shareholding to expand the group’s entertainment ecosystem.
Further, it said in a brief note in its interim results statements. The first payment was an upfront investment, and Multichoice said valuing Betking at a minimum of R6.5billion ($31 million). The additional amount is dependent on earn-out targets, which it did not disclose, up to the end of 2023. Although Multichoice described BetKing as pan-African, it has significant betting operations only in Nigeria, Ethiopia. As of June this year starts operations in Kenya, which it also entered into a considerable soccer sponsorship. In its home country, it has built an agent network.

It says numbers more than 8,000 in part through a commission structure that offers shop-owners up to 30 percent for the transaction via equipment it provides, with the promise of payment within 24 hours. To hit the high commission payments, agents must push –players towards high-risk bets. Those who do not will earn 1% instead.

Nigeria activist has filed a criminal suit at the FCT High Court against 50 persons who participated or promoted the #EndSARS protest online.

POLITICS NIGERIA reported how the protest against police brutality and the misdemeanours of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attracted attention from across the globe.



Several peaceful demonstrations were held in major cities in the country to show the displeasure of the youths.

While the federal government has promised to implement the demands of the protesters, weeks after, it launched a clampdown against promoters of the protest.

This paper had reported how international passports of some persons were withheld, some persons’ bank accounts frozen and scores arrested. These moves have been largely condemned by rights activists and members of the international community.

However, in court documents obtained by POLITICS NIGERIA, Aisha Yesufu, Deji Adeyanju, Ayo Sogunro and some other activists have been dragged to court by Mr Okeke.

Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre, hip hop singers; Damini Ogulu known as Burna Boy, David Adeleke, popularly addressed as Davido, Folarin Falana, Yemi Alade amongst others were also joined in the suit as defendants.


Others include social media personalities and good governance advocates.


Mr Okeke claimed that between the October 28 and October 30, 2020, the defendants, via their Twitter accounts, conspire amongst themselves to “commit a misdemeanour, to wit promoting or acting in such a manner with the intent to assist in the promotion of an unlawful assembly under the guise or composition of “#EndSARS”.

This according to him is an offence punishable under Section 97 (2) of the Penal Code Act, C53 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), has urged #EndSARS campaigners whose bank accounts were frozen by the Central Bank of Nigeria to approach a competent court of law to upturn the apex bank’s action.

Onigbanjo said the Lagos State government had no hand in the recent CBN action, adding that only the Federal Government could provide answers as to why it took the action against the youths.



The AG, who spoke on Monday while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, appealed to the two youth representatives in the Panel of Judicial Inquiry probing the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate to return to the panel so as to enable victims of police brutality and the Lekki shootings get justice.

There were strong indications on Tuesday that the Federal Government had begun a clampdown on promoters of #EndSARS protests by freezing their bank accounts.

Some #EndSARS promoters, who spoke separately to the journalist, said their banks informed them that the Central Bank of Nigeria had directed that their accounts should be frozen.



Last months, youths calling for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police protested for two weeks in major cities of the country.

On Tuesday, some promoters of the protests said their accounts had been frozen for the past two weeks.

The CBN, according to multiple complaints received, they have been reportedly instructed banks to place a ‘Post No Debit’ restriction on the accounts.

The banks, it was learnt, were able to implement the directive by tracking the ‘narration’ of transactions.

Bank transactions that included the narration #EndSARS or End SARS were immediately flagged while such accounts receiving funds were frozen.

Speaking to journalist, a pharmacist, Bassey Israel, who was in charge of the #EndSARS medical team in Port Harcourt, said his account with Access Bank marked 003397XXXX had remained frozen since October 15.


According to him, when he learnt of the development, he went to the bank to find out the reason for it. Israel said he was informed by a bank officer that the directive came from the above, apex bank to be precise.

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged shootings of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos has declined the request by the operators of the tollgate, Lekki Concession Company, to “take back possession” of the tollgate.

The Chairman of the panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, in a short ruling on Tuesday, said the tollgate plaza would remain closed.



The judge said the panel might have a need to pay another visit to the tollgate plaza after watching the video footage from a surveillance camera submitted by the LCC on Tuesday.

Counsel for LCC, Rotimi Seriki, had urged the panel to allow the firm “take possession” of the tollgate plaza to evaluate the level of damage for the purpose insurance claims.

Seriki was reinforcing an earlier request at the proceeding by the LCC Managing Director, Abayomi Omomuwa, who said save for last Friday when he led the panel on a visit to the toll plaza, the place had been inaccessible to LCC management.

Omomuwa said from what he saw during last Friday visit, the level of damage was so much, it would take LCC not less than six months to fix the tollgate plaza.

Omomuwa, who was answering a question on how soon the tollgate would resume operation, said, “Any projection made here will just be guesswork. When we went there that day, I saw the level of damage.
