Brilliant post from GEJ, the usual pro IBB crowd can keep screaming till they are blue, cos their man couldn't set up a facebook (it was peppered by IBB haters ).Check out IBB's sad facebook attempt (pure comedy ); http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ibrahim-Babangida/132555112192Yes, all Nigerians (even those that have never been to an airport) know everything about Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. None of them know a thing about Kano pillars or Enyimba. It is a real pity. Yes Nigerians, be proud of who you are and preserve your culture. Goodluck Nigeria |

mikeansy:When national security is in question, those things tend to be detrimentally balanced with practicality. In simple words, if one threatens the state, they have effectively declared an act of war; therefore, if the slimmest evidence points at Dokpesi, he is wasting his own time. SSS won't even need to turn up in court, the judge can simply declare the matter to be beyond the courts jurisdiction. |
Ujujoan:Are you saying GEJ should have reinstated him back to active duty? What do you think that would have done to all the promotions that occured after he left, what do you think would have been the implications for the force structure? The problem is really with Ribadu ever giving that interview. The whole thing was a stack failure that gave the impression of a man fighting to deserve more than his due. That interview is going to be his undoing, because there are several things which should never have been said. And it is sad, because, Ribadu's real error is in striving for a position for which he has not yet got the full qualities. He desperately needs some civilian experience, but maybe its too late and he's shot himself in the foot already. Newspaper headline after newspaper headline will come out of that interview and it will have a very negative impact on the man. |
Ujujoan:Wild accusation. When, how and where did the bolded ever happen? |
Nigeria’s gross domestic product will overtake South Africa’s in the next three decades, Mboweni, who is now an adviser for Goldman Sachs Group Inc., said in an interview in Johannesburg. Its economy of $169 billion compares with South Africa’s $286 billion, according to World Bank data. Our GDP can overtake SA's in much less than a decade, if we properly engage the masses, become ideologically driven and sort out our power problems. There is a lot in the above, from federal structure to educating and interacting with the population; fleshing it out will take pages. But we can literarily explode economically once the right steps are taken. |
Ribadu is one of Nigeria's greats. He is honest, straightforward and say's it as it is and will one day make a great president. But the time is not now, Ribadu is really in need of some civilian experience in politics to smooth out the raw edges left by the command culture he is used to. The whole interview was a serious mistake and a serious let down, but I'll advise his fans not to give up just yet, there is a future in the man, all he needs is the vital experience to navigate a civilian terrain. A four year senate stint should be enough. The interview makes for very painful reading, but you can almost physically touch Ribadu's enthusiasm. You can find it here (its quite long, but you can read a few lines at least); http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/nvs/candidate-interviews-2-mallam-nuhu-ribadu-unfiltered-full-text-and-audio.html |
^ The foreign intelligence agencies will not give a separate result from SSS and NIA. They have provided Nigeria with tip offs, warnings, cash movements etc and continue to aid Nigerian investigations, ultimately though, the result will be provided by Nigeria and the culprits will be dealt with by Nigeria. People crying about the efforts being driven by politics will find that the evidence is of an international nature, backed up by foreign intelligence services, so there will be very little wriggle room. All they are doing now is attempting to get public sympathy, but govt must press on and not be drawn into their shenanigans. Dokpesi is obviously wasting his time. I see the case being thrown out. |
Goldman’s Mboweni says Nigeria may be Africa’s new economic ‘Gold Rush’ Tuesday, 12 October 2010 01:00 Nigeria will be the next “gold rush” on the continent as investors take advantage of a booming economy, former South African central bank governor, Tito Mboweni, has said. “Nigeria is going to be Africa’s growth story for the next 15 to 20 years,” Mboweni said after returning from a visit to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and the commercial hub, Lagos, as part of a delegation from Goldman Sachs. Nigeria is targeting economic growth of 10 percent in the coming years as it boosts spending on power plants and attracts more investment, finance minister, Olusegun Aganga, a former Goldman Sachs executive, said on September 3. The government is preparing to sell its first Eurobond of $500 million this year. Goldman Sachs, which doesn’t have an office in Nigeria, is bidding to advise on the sale of state-owned power-generation and distribution companies, the Bureau of Public Enterprises said on August 31. The government hasn’t said who will manage the Eurobond sale yet. Mboweni is also chairman of Nampak Ltd., Africa’s biggest packaging maker, which is benefiting from its business in Nigeria, he said. Nampak manufactures bottles for Guinness beer and cigarette packages in the country. Nigeria has previously failed to convert its oil wealth into economic development. In its latest crisis, Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who took office in June last year, fired the chief executive officers of eight of the 24 commercial lenders and pumped N620 billion ($4 billion) to bail out 10 of them as the industry risked collapse. Sanusi said on September 21 that the economy will probably expand 7.78 percent this year, up from 6.96 percent in 2009. There are a number of good, young technocrats in Nigeria’s government who will help sort out the “chaos” in the country, Mboweni said. A former labour minister in President Nelson Mandela’s first cabinet in 1994, Mboweni, 51, left the South African Reserve Bank in November after a decade at its helm, declining President Jacob Zuma’s offer to serve a third term. He was named chairman of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., Africa’s biggest gold producer, on February 24, three weeks after he was appointed to the same position at Nampak. The Reserve Bank of South Africa is doing a “good job,” Mboweni said. Interest rate increases between June 2006 and June 2008 helped to curb price gains, he said. Inflation has been inside the central bank’s 3 percent to 6 percent target range since February, easing to an annual 3.5 percent in August. Mboweni was criticised by South African labour unions for not cutting interest rates fast enough in 2009, which they said prolonged the economy’s first recession in 17 years. He lowered the benchmark rate six times to 7 percent between December 2008 and August 2009. His replacement, Gill Marcus, has cut the rate by 1 percentage point since then. In his new role at Goldman Sachs, Mboweni said he has met with foreign investors, who raised concerns about calls from the youth wing of the ruling African National Congress to nationalise the country’s mines. His response to them is that the “center will hold” in the ANC, he said. http://www.businessdayonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14324:goldmans-mboweni-says-nigeria-may-be-africas-new-economic-gold-rush-&catid=85:national&Itemid=340 |
LouisThoru:Bros, you de fear tax? ![]() If "abroad" means Somalia, then very few pay tax, if however, it means places like Europe, the US or China, then everyone pays (except criminals). The good sides of taxation far outweigh any negatives; Lagosians are seeing its benefits and are quite happy, indeed they couldn't be farther away from complaining. @topic Nigeria desperately needs to begin building all the institutions that make normal countries tick. We can't continue living in a society based on theft; those at the top steal like they are mentally handicapped, while bribing the sods at the bottom with lawlessness like not paying taxes and access to the most sensitive documents with a little egunje. But the current system of patronage takes back twice as much as it gives to its sorry customers. I am quite encouraged by the raft of developments coming out of govt these days, which should see Nigeria becoming a more accountable country. Things might not yet be perfect, but a solid framework is being built. No modern country runs without data, but our shamelessly corrupt Nigeria has made that a goal, because corruption hates leaving traceable tracks. If all goes smoothly, the national unique Taxpayer Identification System will enable every adult to be counted and will serve as a reference point for all sorts of interesting data. For example, at the press of a button, figures for the contribution of women folk to the economy will pop out; at the press of another button figures for men between the ages of 30 and 45 from Ogoja will be available. Now thats real basis for planning! It falls on each and every one of us to fight hard so that projects such as this one do not fall by the wayside, or end with the present govt. We are heading slowly, but surely toward true federalism. Some time ago, I posted about another project thats about calculating revenues raised at all levels by all LG's and states. It is a very encouraging and far-sighted article, just what Nigeria needs; here it is again; FG budgets N1.6bn to compute states’ contribution to national economyhttp://www.businessdayonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13599:fg-budgets-n16bn-to-compute-states-contribution-to-national-economy&catid=85:national&Itemid=340 |
ABUJA BOMB BLAST: Dokpesi Storms Court Author: Date: Oct 11th, 2010. Embattled founder of African Independent Television; AIT, and Director General of the IBB Campaign Organization this morning stormed the Federal High Court Headquarters building in Abuja in company of two file- clutching lawyers from the Chambers of Chief Kalu Agabi; an Abuja based constitutional lawyer and former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice for a yet to be confirmed purpose. Chief Dokpesi who drove into the court premises at about 9: 46 am in a black colored Toyota Land cruiser SUV with tinted glasses and an armed mobile policeman in tow, dashed straight to 3rd floor of the court complex where the Registrar’s office is located. He spent about 23 minutes at the desk of a court staff in charge of signature verifications for affidavits before storming out of the court premises in a hurry. Attempts by newsmen to ascertain the purpose of his visit was greeted with a repeated “Thank you very much” from the embattled media mogul. The Edo state high chief was arrested, interrogated, detained and released penultimate week over an alleged complicity in the “Independence Bomb Blast” which rocked the capital city of Abuja during the celebrations marking the nation’s 50th Anniversary. Lives of hapless Nigerians were lost and many more injured as a result of the bomb blast. Dokpesi’s lawyers who were left behind also declined to divulge their mission at the court and stated that in due course it will be made known. Both left minutes later after Chief Dokpesi. Investigations by PM News at the IBB Campaign Organization revealed that the visit at the court this morning may not be unconnected with the decision of the embattled media mogul to stave off further “harassment” by security operatives through fundamental rights enforcement proceedings. Inside sources at the IBB campaign office who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated that the Chief has a right, like every other Nigerian, to put a stop to the “incessant harassment” which operatives of the State Security Services are dishing out to him. Soon after his release, Dokpesi planned a media briefing which was later rescheduled as he was requested to return back to the Headquarters of the SSS for further interrogations less than 24 hours after his release. He has been reporting at the SSS and may have become exhausted from series of interrogations that he is seeking a legal option to a stop to it. Government to create integrated automated tax system By Bassey Udo October 11, 2010 10:53PM The Federal Government is to create an integrated automated tax administration as part of efforts towards a holistic development of the country’s tax system, in line with the present administration’s commitment to the principles of transparency and accountability. President Goodluck Jonathan said this yesterday, in Abuja, at the opening of the 31st technical conference of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA). Mr. Jonathan added that various multi-billion naira projects were recently approved for the development of a unique tax identification system to facilitate the development of a national taxpayer database. The president, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, said a National Tax Policy was also approved early this year to underscore his administration’s determination to build an enduring tax culture in the country. “We have recently approved various projects running into billions of naira for the development of a national unique Taxpayer Identification System, which will serve as a national taxpayer database. We are also in the process of approving another project for the creation of the Integrated Tax Administration System, which is intended to automate and create a seamless system of tax administration in the country. “This, along with other initiatives in the tax system, show that government is aware of the importance of an effective tax system and will do all within its powers to provide one to the Nigerian people”, Mr. Ahmed said. He added that the tax sector has significantly developed and fast becoming a major contributor to the development of the country’s overall economy. “Nigeria’s tax system is today being held up as a model among its peers. This can be directly attributed to the tax reforms, which commenced about a decade ago, and which have been sustained by the present administration. We will continue to provide the necessary conditions and support required by the tax authorities to make taxation the bedrock of the Nigerian economy and a major sustainable source of government revenue,” he said. Tax is important Segun Aganga, the minister of finance, represented by Yabawa Lawani Wali, the minister of state for finance, said an ineffective tax system as a result of poor funding, lack of enabling technology, lack of training, and skilled human capacity, has always led to leakages and huge losses of government revenue. Mr. Aganga said in most developing countries that depend on the development of natural resources as government’s major revenue earner, the tax administration system has been left behind by the transition from a mono-product economy to an industrialised and diversified economy, due to government’s inability to properly understand and cover transactions within the specialised areas covering oil and gas as well as telecommunications. The minister expressed the hope that the conference, which focuses on the theme ‘Exchange of Information: Domestic and International and the Taxation of Specialized Sectors’, would come up with resolutions that would enable tax administrations of Commonwealth member countries utilise available skills and technology to maximise tax revenues from specialised sectors for national economic development. Ifueko Omogui-Okauru, the chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), said the annual technical conference has always provided avenue for Commonwealth countries to deliberate on critical issues affecting tax administration in the countries. Mrs. Omogui-Okauru noted the significant progress by government in the development of the country’s tax system and administration, though she noted that more work still need to be done, as is the case in most CATA member nations. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Money/5629274-147/government_to_create_integrated_automated_tax.csp |
FG to deploy troops against Boko Haram in Borno News Oct 11, 2010 By Daniel Idonor ABUJA—THE Federal Government is said to be contemplating the deployment of troops in the troubled Borno State following the bloody violence perpetrated by Boko Haram, a religious sect, which left 12 security operatives dead. This indication emerged, yesterday, when President Goodluck Jonathan met with Governor Ali Modu_Sheriff of Borno State, behind closed doors, along with top security operatives in the country, over the state of affairs in the troubled state. Fielding questions from State House Correspondents after the meeting, Sheriff said: “Everything will be put in place to ensure the place is not like a guerilla zone that they can just come and hit somebody and go back. I want to assure you that the commander-in-chief is doing everything possible to ensure the matter is put to rest once and for all.” The governor told newsmen: “Twelve people died. Most of them were police personnel and one of them was my national vice chairman but I want you to understand that chief security officer of a state has a limit. In Nigeria the police operate under the Federal Government and no state has police or military. Your being chief security office is by name, the deployment of military personnel has to come from the commander_in_chief and that is the one reason we are here to let the commander_in_chief know.” Asked if the President has approved the deployment of troops in the troubled state, the governor said: “These are security matters. My discussions with the commander_in_chief should not be a matter for the public, once is security it has to remain security. But I want to assure you that lives and property will be protected.” Despite the fear being expressed by non_indigenes of the state over the growing violence, the governor said: “In Borno State, indigenes and non_indigenes will be protected. There is no difference between an indigene and non_indigene; lives are supposed to be protected. The protection of lives and property is the responsibility of government and government will do everything to protect them.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/fg-to-deploy-troops-against-boko-haram-in-borno/ |

kITA TITA:I believe so. It was quite a long read, but very worthwhile. Basically, Asari has been screaming out loud for almost two years now that Henry Okah is an immoral bank robber, murderer and gun runner who doesn't care about any struggle; but is possessed by how the struggle can pay his bills. |
I note this article is from January 1, 2009. |
Ex Inferis:Kai! You are so emotional and dude, nothing clouds the faculties as effectively as emotion. So quoting the authorities is what you find annoying. Wonders! Who would you prefer quoting, your vulcaniser or the crew from iya Basira's beer palour? You are asking for proof of a couple of things, yet you claim not to believe Interpol, US and UK intelligence agencies, as well as their Nigerian counterparts. Strange! Regardless of how your emotions play, there are cold facts which cannot be ignored.
[li]Nigeria was alerted by foreign intelligence agencies about the bomb plot[/li] [li]Financial transactions were traced between several Nigerian bank accounts and Okah, therefore all linked financial transactions (including the 4 million must be thoroughly investigated[/li] [li]Dokpesi gave 5 "stranded" men he didn't know from Adam 500,000.00, yet economy class airfares to Port Harcourt are in the region of 11,000. Helloooooooo! [li]Dokpesi claims the 5 Niger Delta Renaissance Network men could pay him 1 million for business, but be stranded by evening, to the extent that Dokpesi had to dole out a gargantuan 500,000.00 to help them. Helloooooooo!! [li]How much would it have cost if the men had chartered a helicopter to drop them at their doorsteps in Yenegoa? Surely not 500,000.00![/li] [li]Dokpesi claimed to have not the slightest knowledge of the text message, yet by miracle, he knew exactly what the 4 million was about! Chineke!!
One thing that intrigues me no end, is the sudden love many unlikely fellows have developed for Henry Okah. Yesterday, he was a terrorist that Yar Adua had no business inviting to Aso Rock, today he is a hero to his critics, because he has been implicated in the Independence day Bomb Blast by several security agencies from the US, UK and Nigeria. . . Thats a strange one indeed. |
snakova:So your boss controlling more than 4 million is the reason why Dokpesi's story is inconsistent and contradictory? There surely are some very "clever" guys on NL! But, hey! Its so much easier to abuse than to actaully make sense. Is there something logical you can actually add to make Dokpesi's story sound plausible? Unu go kill pesin wit laf o! ![]() |
^ Another shower of meaningless sentiment, instead of logic. |
If a top security man calls a press conference to say Dokpesi has a case to answer, then indeed, Dokpesi has a case to answer. I don't understand how some people are mean enough to turn the blood of the innocent, spilt at the Independence Bomb Blasts, into a political football. |
Ex Inferis:I am shocked that you can call someone a "colossal jacka55" and then totally avoid disputing the fine points they raised? Really strange, you need to put your emotions aside, they are clouding your logic, You have based your arguments on very faulty ground, which is, that nobody has been found to be directly involved in the crime. I have a couple of questions to straighten your thoughts:
[li]What do you understand could be the reason why 4 people are being held by the SSS? Fun and games?[/li] [li]Why do you think the SSS won a case to hold the 4 persons for an extended period?[/li] [li]Do you really think the SSS has suddenly become so powerful that they can use the CIA, FBI, MI5 and Interpol for local politics? Thats got to be the joke of the millenium![/li] [li]For what purpose do you believe Dokpesi MUST report daily to the SSS office? Because, they like seeing him?[/li] [li]Lastly, you might wish to read the quote below very closely: Abuja — A senior security operative told journalists in Abuja yesterday that the security team investigating the bomb blasts that claimed 16 innocent lives in Abuja on October 1 has downloaded 700 pages of telephone conversations-text messages and voices - which were being investigated.http://allafrica.com/stories/201010110254.html[/li]
|
slap1:Dude, the gist is that there were many more bombs than the ones that went off. I read somewhere that the rest were jammed with high tech signals. It is widely reported that there were just two blasts, but there are a few pictures showing a soldier lying face down from wounds received by a third blast that happened right inside Eagle Square. Nobody knows the full extent yet, cos we haven't been told; but I guess in a weeks time, we might have a fuller picture. |
Ibime:Thats possible. Odili has some really nasty gangster and underworld connections. |
NIA, SSS probe ex-gov over bomb blasts •Operatives download 700-page text messages Written by Taiwo Adisa and Leon Usigbe, Abuja Monday, 11 October 2010 INVESTIGATORS probing the twin bomb blasts, which rocked Abuja on Nigeria’s Independence Day, have extended their probe to the doorsteps of a former governor, sources said on Sunday. The Nigerian Tribune was reliably informed that the investigators, including officials of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the State Security Service (SSS) have continued to comb the several communication networks with the aim of isolating information that could provide further leads to the bomb blasts story. It was gathered that the agencies have pieced together information linking a former civilian governor to the bomb blasts, while other pieces of information regarded as damaging enough are being put together. The SSS had, last week, secured a court order, which allowed it to detain the suspects already arrested in connection with the bomb blasts, which claimed no fewer than 14 lives. Sources said that the Special Investigation Panel, set up to coordinate the bomb blasts issue so far has been told of the alleged involvement of the former governor, based on information pieced together by the different agencies. The source, who refused to give direct insights into the text messages, said that the operatives had been able to track loads of communications with direct links to the bomb blasts of October 1. It was gathered that in order not to overheat the polity as a result of the investigation, the investigators will for now not make the name of the affected suspect public. It was also gathered that the top hierarchy of the SSS were unhappy that the Director-General of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, went ahead to address a press conference on Saturday where he painted the investigation as political. Sources close to the investigation stated that the SSS believed that Dokpesi misapplied his freedom, following the decision of the service to allow him report to its headquarters from his house daily. Said the source: “The press conference granted by Chief Dokpesi is being counted as a step that puts the SSS in a bad light. It was like a stab in the back, because the service granted him the honour of coming for interrogation from his house. It was aimed at avoiding a situation where people would politicise the arrest and overheat the polity but he has used that advantage against the service. Unfortunately, the SSS does not do politics; it is concerned about the security of everyone, which is an onerous task.” It was also confirmed, on Sunday, that the agencies had collectively downloaded up to 700 pages of text messages in the ongoing investigations thus far. A source said that all those remotely connected to the October 1 incident were being closely monitored and that interrogations would be done at every necessary stage. Another source said on Sunday: “Based on the international concerns on the Abuja bomb blasts, the investigators have seen the need to be cautious and painstaking. They are leaving no stone unturned in the process. So far, I can confirm to you that the investigators especially from NIA and SSS; have downloaded over 700 pages of text messages. All networks are involved and they have found useful information linking the ring leaders. “Those being investigated include a former governor. The intercepted messages have proved to be very helpful. Because the United Nations is also concerned, the investigations have been far reaching. The security agencies are saying that this is not politics. It is a national security matter and that they are determined to get to the roots of this.” Meanwhile, the Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation has dismissed suggestions by Dr Dokpesi, that he was considered for the same position in President Goodluck Jonathan’s camp. A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Goodluck/Sambo Presoidential Campaign Organisation, Mr Sully Abu, said in Abuja on Sunday that the Africa Independent Television (AIT) owner was never considered for the post as he alleged in a recent interview with the media. According to the statement, “the attention of the Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation has been drawn to certain utterances by the Director General of the Babangida Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, to the effect that he was suffering an imagined political persecution because he declined to head our campaign organisation. “Nothing could be farther from the truth. At no time was Chief Dokpesi considered for such a role. He never made it to anybody’s shortlist or long list. “In any case, the claim defies political common sense as such a position is normally given to someone outside the geographical zone of the aspirant.” The statement added that “Dokpesi, being from the South-South as President Jonathan, could never have been considered for such a position.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/front-page-news/11935-nia-sss-probe-ex-gov-over-bomb-blasts-operatives-download-700-page-text-messages |
