Ciroma, the regional warrior People & Politics Oct 14, 2010 By Ochereome Nnanna ON two occasions, Malam Adamu Ciroma came close to emerging as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In 1978 when the military was preparing for their first hand over of power to the civilians, he was a front runner for president on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). But because the Nigerian ruling class usually prefers less fancied materials, it was soft-spoken Alhaji Shehu Shagari that was picked. Again in 1992, during General Ibrahim Babangida’s convoluted transition to civil rule programme, Ciroma was poised to pick up the ticket of the National Republican Convention (NRC). In the first ballot, he drew even with his closest rival, Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi and a runoff was imminent. It was Babangida’s cancellation of the primaries of the SDP and NRC and disqualification of all 22 presidential aspirants that scuttled Ciroma’s opportunity. Among other things, Ciroma has been a Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Minister of Finance during the first term of the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 to 2003. It is a man of this giant national profile that is now the field marshal of Arewa warriors campaigning for the return of power to the North in 2011. More than 30 years of exposure to sensitive high national public offices has failed to moderate the regional impetus that threw him upon the national centre-stage. Just like Shagari, Ciroma started his public service in the office of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello. He was the first editor (later Managing Director) of the Arewa-centric New Nigerian Newspapers. But unlike Shagari who has stayed above the unfolding North versus Jonathan fray, Ciroma has remained the defender of the North that Sardauna raised members of his generation to be. When he took the front seat to push Arewa’s demand that President Goodluck Jonathan should respect the zoning arrangement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and give way to a Northerner in 2011, I felt he had a point, even if a clumsy one. It is clumsy in that those asking Jonathan to step down for the North would never do that for the South if the situation were reversed, more so as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is on the President’s side. Many Igbo people were hoping (and still are) that zoning would be respected in order to enable it solve the problem it was created to do in the first place – give every marginalised group (Igbos inclusive) a sense of belonging in the system, just it has done the Yoruba and Ijaw. However, the call on Jonathan to resign or be impeached by the National Assembly, in my opinion, smacked of political hysteria, even desperation. When a person is desperate he can say or do anything. When a person is hysterical, he is not in full control of himself. Something else other than cold reasoning has taken over. The ultimatum that Ciroma issued on behalf of the Northern Political Forum on Wednesday October 6, 2010 was clearly intended to incite the North against the President. This appears to be a common tactic employed by the pro-zoning wing of Northern leaders against the aspirations of Jonathan. A prominent traditional ruler was quoted as telling Northerners that the emergence of Jonathan in 2011 would threaten their culture and religion. In an interview in The News Magazine Prof Ango Abdullahi, the former VC of the Ahmadu Bello University, claimed that Jonathan would lose if he ran for president. Alhaji Lawal Kaita was also quoted in the media as saying the North would make the nation ungovernable for the President unless he respected the zoning principle. In his statement on behalf of the NPF, Ciroma replied Jonathan’s unguarded defence of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and accusation of “terrorists” while investigation was ongoing with an equally unguarded repartee. He said Jonathan should resign or be impeached because the North no longer felt safe under him. If Ciroma and his cohorts had their way, Jonathan would be removed from office. The one-week ultimatum has passed and the call for Jonathan’s impeachment was not acted upon. The failure of the National Assembly to consider the impeachment of the President, even in form of a motion, is a possible pointer to the outcome of the impending struggle to snatch the PDP ticket from the President or defeat him in the general elections. It is like a failed referendum. Knowing that no section of the country can muster the number of federal legislators to remove the President (least of all a severely divided North) the NPF should not have made that call. It turned out a wasted effort. Again, it was inappropriate to liken Jonathan’s presidential bid to Obasanjo’s failed third term. Obasanjo tried to change the Constitution to get the third term but failed. It is also untrue that Obasanjo’s third term bid led to “the wasting of innocent civilian lives”. No life was lost. Clearly, that statement was meant to create an anti-Jonathan feeling in the system as Obasanjo’s bid elicited. I would advise Northern leaders, especially those who have benefited so much from Nigeria, to take it easy. Let them not give to Jonathan what they would not take from anybody if they were in the President’s shoes. If they are serious about preventing Jonathan from getting elected next year, let them put their so-called majority power into effect democratically. The North is said to have the knack to unite at the snap of a finger. This is the time to prove it. The campaign of incitement should cease forthwith, both from the North and Jonathan’s side, who are brandishing state agencies and MEND to intimidate their opponents. Be careful what you wish. You may get it! http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/ciroma-the-regional-warrior/ |

OMO IBO:Do you realise there was a bomb threat by a group claiming to be MEND in Zamfara state? I don't see how condemning a bomb threat purportedly from MEND amounts to "continuous shielding of MEND." Can you explain? Power: FG to give priority to loal contractors – Jonathan News Oct 13, 2010 By Oscarline Onwuemenyi ABUJA — President Goodluck Jonathan has said the government would give preference to indigenous contractors in its drive to improve electricity power in the country. Jonathan, who was speaking on Tuesday at Talata Mafara Community, in Zamfara State, where he commissioned one of the two transformers, stated that his government was totally committed to improving electricity supply in the country for industrial, socio-economic development of the country. The project was executed by a local firm, Messrs Continental Engineering Nigeria Ltd, at the cost of over N699 million. The President, while commending the indigenous contractor for the job well done, said his administration by next year would give more preference to local contractors. Earlier, the Governor of Zamfara State, Alh. Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi, said the commissioning of the project by President Goodluck Jonathan would go a long way to address the problem of power shortage which is threatening the very foundation of the economy of Zamfara State people and survival of hundreds of thousands of the people predominantly made up of farming communities and small scale industries. Governor Shinkafi said the people of Zamfara were grateful to the President and the gesture would lead to the boosting of economic activities and revival of ailing industries in the state. It will be recalled that President Jonathan also commissioned the new 2 x 60MVA, 132/33KV transmission substation, Kubwa, Abuja and reinforcement of the 132/33KV transmission substation, Apo, Abuja on September 28, 2010. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Power, Arc. Nuhu Somo Wya, has appealed to the community to allow the speedy repairs of the second transformer to ensure flexibility of operations in the transmission sub-station in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State. Wya stated that efforts to move the transformer out to a workshop in Lagos for inspection and repairs, was resisted by the local community. However, the minister disclosed that the Federal Government would collaborate with the state government to persuade members of the community to permit the repairs. Wya stated that commissioning of the 2 x 30 140MW, 132/33KV transmission sub-station, Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, was one out of the numerous power projects completed across the country by the present administration. The minister further stated that the project was expected to improve electricity supply in Zamfara State and its environs, thereby stimulating socio-economic activities in the areas. Wya said the project was designed to increase and improve electricity supply not only to Talata Mafara, but the whole of Zamfara State and its surrounding areas. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/power-fg-to-give-priority-to-loal-contractors-jonathan/ |

MEND’s Threat: This Nonsense Must Stop – Jonathan Tuesday, 12 October 2010 23:58 Iyobosa Uwugiaren And Golu Timothy Abuja .President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his promise that the Federal Government would no longer allow some criminal-minded persons to hide underneath the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to perpetrate heinous crimes. The president, who spoke last night through his spokesman, Mr. Ima Niboro on his arrival from Sokoto and Zamfara states, said his trip to the two states was successful in spite of the MEND's threat. "The president just returned from Zamfara and Sokoto states. It was successful and incident-free, in spite of the bomb threats by MEND," Mr. Niboro stated in a statement last night,"But these threats bring to focus the president's position that no one must hide underneath MEND to perpetrate evil. This is even more so since the MEND known to Nigerians has willingly renounced violence. "So which MEND was this? The Zamfara variant? This nonsense must stop, and this is precisely the president's position." Meanwhile, the president has commended the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar for his exemplary leadership and contributions to peace in Nigeria. Speaking yesterday during a courtesy call on the Sultan, as part of his official visit to Sokoto and Zamfara states, the president noted that the Sultan's contributions are exemplary and that he has been acknowledged worldwide as a man of peace. President Jonathan assured the Sultan that his administration is committed to taking Nigeria to greater heights so that, by its centennial celebrations, Nigerians will have a country all can be proud of. "We are determined to give the required leadership. This is our only country, we have no other one; so we must reposition it to attain great heights," he said. He commiserated with the Sultan over the floods which ravaged sections of Sokoto and Kebbi states, and said that the Federal Government has given and will continue to give major assistance to alleviate the situation. In his remarks, Sultan Abubakar commended the president for successfully steering the ship of state so far. He stated that, as a religious and traditional ruler, he is committed to doing what is right, and would not deviate from the path. The Sultan later presented the president a white horse as a royal gift on behalf of himself and the sultanate. Earlier, the president was conferred with the traditional title of "Santuraki Talata Mafara", by the Emir of Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, Muhammadu Bello Barmo. The president was honoured just before he commissioned the 132/33 KVA transmission substation located in the community. At the commissioning, President Jonathan praised the efforts of the local contractor, noting that government is committed to encouraging local contractors. He disclosed that, from the next fiscal year, the Federal Government would set aside a percentage of contracts dedicated to local contractors. "This the only way we can improve capacity and grow our economy," he said. http://www.leadershipeditors.com/ns/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17285:mends-threat-this-nonsense-must-stop--jonathan&catid=51:cover-stories&Itemid=101 |

It is also more likely that Jonathan would be a member of NVS, they've got gravitas and clout as far as online politics goes. |

Nairaland does not have the sort of depth and quality that will convince any top politician or leader to join with their real name and photo. It isn't a fault of the members, but more a fault of some of the moderators who can be very partial, vindictive and so narrowminded that they cannot see the incalculable damage they do to the brand. Without this sad state of affairs, Nairaland would have been the biggest beast in social networking on the African landscape. Nigeria Village Square is too intellectual for most of the younger NL members (and they don't have romance and sexuality sections ), otherwise it would have left NL in the dust long, long ago. However, the clout the Nigeria Village Square possesses is several leagues ahead of NL; they are very professionally run and can attract top shots for one on one interviews. No top shot would easily consider an NL interview where they might be subjected to tribalistic comments, the occasional idiotic one liner that is irrelevant to the topic and tonnes of foolish statements by a loud few who take pride in ignorance and equate verbal abuse with logic. In this political season, NL's politics section should have been able to host a few interviews with political bigwigs, rather we have violently foolish topics like "Jonathan Snubs Ojukwu" culled from dubious sources. This is Nigeria Village Squares Buhari interview; http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/nvs/politicians-would-be-the-first-victims-of-sharia-if-properly-implemented-buhari.html And here's their Ribadu interview; http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/nvs/candidate-interviews-2-mallam-nuhu-ribadu-unfiltered-full-text-and-audio.html Nigeria Village Square also attracts articles from the best writing and social analyctic talent, such as Reno Omokri, Joe Igbokwe, Reuben Abati etc. Isn't there a clear difference? |
