D'Vanguard:

30 billion, haba. Even a fool knows that it is impossible to spend such huge amount. Commenting on such a figure is absurd. It a mere propaganda. We are good in absolving things and we don't like to ask some questions.
If Tinubu would spend such a frivolous amount alone for Ondo politics as claimed by the reporter, I can bet it with you all those people u said decamp would never decamp. That money would by them all. Most of them would shut up for just a bribe of 100m at most and a promise of a position.
Am not interested in the election but pls release better information. Even PDP that is financially bouyant can not expend such an amount.

The thief, Tinubu is ready to die for awuf oil money. He is ready to spend eye popping amounts, ask those from Akwa Ibom (2011) where he had no hope, but spent billions out of lust for oil.

After losing the elections, Tinubu's ACN spent further billions trying to burn the entire Akwa Ibom down in their usual NURTW style.

Mimiko, please protect your great state from thieves. cool

Politics / Re: Arewa To Gej:renounce 2015 And Enjoy Peace by Beaf: 12:38am On Aug 10, 2012
Many of us have been saying boko haram is simply a political tool in the battle to retain control of oil wells.
Thank God for inflicting the Arewa elders with such a degree of madness that they have admitted it in public. The ways of God are indeed mysterious.

However, what the Arewa elders have revealed should not be news to anybody.
It should have been as obvious as a light in the dark, except to fools who are easily used; like those who engaged in the pro-subsidy riots on behalf of the cabal and then went on to dress the cabals wolf, Farouk in the toga of sainthood.
Helping the average Nigerian is a sacifice by the foolhardy. Imagine genuinely trying to free a slave, only for them to bath you in volley after volley of base insult, because their slavemaster has dangled a carrot to enslave their children tomorrow, but paid them blood money today. Thats the Nigerian for you.

Those I pity are the people who are quick to join any passing fad and bandwagon; those who are quick to unleash insults, because they are too lazy to think for themselves and someone from their ethnic group has spoken.
You have to wonder if Nigeria is not already lost with such a high proportion of loud and obnoxious youth who do not care to read or educate themselves about their country and how it works.

Yes, boko haram is all about 2015 and the maintainance of a grip on illegally acquired oil wells. For that reason, Arewa elders do not care if their people die like chickens under boko harams unslaught. Its a pity.

I agree about Lagos not enjoying the best of the improvements. More attention needs to be given to that city, given its importance to the industrial base of our economy. The DIPP in Delta already feeds Lagos, but more needs to be done, maybe there needs to be some form of partnership between the FG and state to drive up local power production in record time.
That said, I believe Lagos is selected as one of the areas for early 24/7 like Anambra is.

August 8, 2012 by Agency Reporter

Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark and former head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida

Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, on Wednesday challenged former head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, to a public senility test.

Clark, who was reacting to Babangida’s description of the Ijaw leader as senile, said the test would determine the reasoning ability of both of them.

Babangida, who was reacting to some recent comments made by Clark, had said the Ijaw leader had lost focus and had become senseless.

Clark had attacked Babangida at a public lecture, where he accused the former military leader of having a hand in the Boko Haram insurgency.

However, his declaration was contained in a statement read at a press conference in Abuja by his lawyer, Mr. Kayode Ajulo.

Clark said both of them should sit at a public debate, without the assistance of aides, to debate issues so that Nigerians could determine whether Clark or Babangida was suffering from senility.

Politics / Re: Is It Legislator Job To Investigate Financial Misappropriation? by Beaf: 2:15am On Aug 09, 2012
OYINBOGOJU: Thanks for the insight Beaf

More questions anyway

Do EFCC need order or permission from the above before they could swing into action?

Since they are independent i think they are suppose to get into action on hearing of any financial misappopriation from any angel.

Do they wait to receive petition before anything is done?

Nigeria's problems are deeply structural and thats why we keep parachuting in bodies like the EFCC to block leakages. But blocking leakages in our national structure is like tying iron rods with string to build the foundation of a skyscrapper. What we really need is to tear up the phucked up document thats our constitution, cos we'll be phucked up as long as our foundation is phucked up.
It is the chaotic structure that our unfortunate constitution forces on us that gives the legislators leeway and fertilizes our corrupt govt tiers and corrupt society.

The EFCC deals with only select cases since they are not a full fledged service like the police or SSS.
To makes things even more constraigned, the EFCC falls on the the Executive (President). In other words, without rigourous self censoring, the EFCC (and similar bodies) can become a tool in the hands of a wayward President to levy tyranny on opponents and the masses. If you recall, both El Rufai and Ribadu fled into exile during Yar Adua's time, I don't think we want such; we need to be careful when calling on such extralegal forces.

What we need instead, is to restructure the police force into a modern instutution and scrap adhoc bodies like the EFCC. Bur that has to come as part of a larger effort to restructure the country.

Anytime the Legislators stray into territory that they have termed "Executive Oversight," it is simply because dollars have been fitted into caps to bury tracks.

The very choice of words in the unfortunate term, "Executive Oversight," shows that they have strayed into executive territory where the separation of powers ensures that they lack jurisdiction. But Nigerians are easily fooled, especially when huge sums are mentioned, so dollar in cap fueled straying has become the norm, rather than legislating.

Nice thread.

Okupe blasts El-Rufai, Tunde Bakare over calls for Jonathan resignation
By Victor Iluyemi
August 8, 2012 22:36:51pm GMT

Abuja (WorldStage Newsonline)-- The newly appointed Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, on Wednesday discribed the former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as a derailed or deranged politician.

He also did not spear the Vice Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 election, Pastor Tunde Bakare who he advised to stop hiding behind the pulpit.

El-Rufai recently called for the resignation of President Goodluck Jonathan if he (the President) could not solve the ongoing security challenges in the country.

But the SSA said no responsible citizen will call on the President to quit in the face of insurgency at a time when all hands should be on deck to defeat the common enemies.

He argued that it is a well known fact that issue of insurgency is a very difficult national problem. “It is not anything peculiar to Nigeria. No responsible citizen of any of those countries affected by insurgency before call on their Presidents to resign,” he said.

He also warned against the manipulation of the present security situation in the country by politicians for selfish purposes.

The SSA also faulted the former Minister's criticism of the president's reliance on citizens for information on terrorist activities.

He said, "El-Rufai is my younger brother. I have so much respect for him. But politics is more or less derailing or deranging him.

"Everybody knows that insurgency is a very difficult national problem. It is not anything peculiar to Nigeria. No responsible citizen of any of those countries affected by insurgency before call on their Presidents to resign.

"When he talks about intelligence, there is no better security in any country than by the people of the country. It is communal security that will help government and security agencies to root out insurgence. If people shielded insurgents, they make the works of security agencies more difficult. "Can President Goodluck Jonathan be in Borno and everywhere at the same time? I believe that people just want to play politics. All what you are hearing is just the manipulation of the present situation to suit their political purposes.

"I am sure that my brother, El-Rufai is hopeful to be a presidential candidate of one of the parties very soon. What I will expect him to do with the level of intellect, intelligence and the resource that has been given to his own personal education is to come out with some reasonable plans, some suggestions, and not just criticising government for criticising sake.

"If El-Rufai was President of Nigeria, what will he do? Why don’t he say that? Or is he keeping that until when he becomes the President by which time the whole country is wiped off? When tragedy befalls a country, responsible men and women of that country forget partisanship and rally round their nation and they try their best to help existing government to tackle that. Once that is over, they go back to politics.

"This is not time for politics. Every man or woman who politicises this issue of Boko haram, people should disregard and discard whatever information they hear from them. They are not serious-minded people."

On pastor Bakare, he said " Pastor Bakare also falls into that category. It is shameful. You cannot convert the pulpit to a podium.

"If you want to be a politician, please come out.”

"Pastor Bakare came into politics a few years ago and he became a vice presidential candidate of a major political party, some of us have been in politics for 30 years and we did not even become a governor and we did not say the country must come down, that is unfair. It is unacceptable."

He also accused Pastor Bakare of insincerity and obviously playing to the gallery, insisting that "Boko Haram is something that evolved suddenly in the early part of the life span of this administration. Internal insurgency is not peculiar to Nigeria, it has happened in Oman, Sri lanka, Vietnam, Great Britain, Philippines, Kenya and Iraq.

"I wish to advice that if Pastor Bakare will be fair, he should come out properly to the political Arena and stop using God's Pulpit to throw stones at Gods elect, as no leader will emerge in any praying nation like Nigeria without the blessing of God", Okupe said

Politics / FEC Approves N325M Contract For Second Niger Bridge by Beaf: 11:04pm On Aug 08, 2012
FEC approves N325 million contract for second Niger Bridge

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the contract for the designing, building, financing and operation of the second Niger Bridge linking Anambra and Delta states under the private partnership scheme.

The consultancy contract for the final planning and design of the second Niger Bridge will cost N325 million.

Briefing state house correspondents on the contract, the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolemehinme said that the bridge forms a major link between the South-east and the South-west sub regions of the country.

He noted that the Federal Government is concerned about the challenges the old Niger Bridge has posed to road users on the route and expressed the government’s desire to take immediate action by constructing a second Niger bridge that will ease traffic on the axis.

Also approved is contract for the dualisation of the Kano-Maiduguri road, Section Two, at the cost of N8.3 million to complement the development effort of the Jigawa state government.

President Goodluck Jonathan was said to have received a report by the Jigawa state governor on the need to extend the road from Dutse – the capital of Jigawa state to the some part of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway, an extension of about 24.2 km.

The governor is building an airport and some housing estates there, hence the need for the dualisation of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway.

The council also approved the expansion of the 2.8 KM dual carriage road connecting the Apakun-Murtala Mohammed Airport road to a modern eight lane that will provide smooth movement of traffic. The contract was approved at N297million.

The expansion of the Airport road was one of the key campaign pledges made by President Goodluck Jonathan during his election campaigns in Lagos ahead of the 2011 presidential election.

While the Minister of Works asserted that the Jonathan administration has taken a firm step to deliver on the Onitsha Bridge, he also added that the importance of the Murtala Muhammed Airport road can cannot be underestimated, noting that the road which has been in a state of disrepair will be re-designed to eight lanes.
