Politics › Shehu Abdullahi: The Implications Of The NBA Rejection Of Justice Tanko As CJ by BeautifulMind2(op): 4:37pm On Jan 27, 2019
Nigeria presently has two Chief Justices of the Federation. One is recognized by the constitution and the other is recognized by the President.

Civil Societies, Election observers, pressure groups, opposition parties and the international community, have all come out to support the constitution of Nigeria at this trying time. A big stakeholder in this issue is the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), led by Paul Usoro SAN.

In the statement, Usoro stated, “It is unfortunate that the Executive Branch of Government purports to suspend the CJN on the basis of an alleged ex-parte order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal – the same Tribunal that, to the knowledge of the Executive, had, only the first previous day, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 adjourned its proceedings to Monday, 28 and January 2019 and has before it a Motion on Notice that is yet to be argued, seeking a the same reliefs as were contained in the purported ex-parte application, to wit, the state capital suspension of the CJN, amongst others.4. ”

The implication is that the president has gone on and above to suspend the constitution in order to achieve his aims and objectives. Clearly, the NBA is of the understanding that the constitution allows for the removal of the CJN through a recommendation of the NJC and a 2/3 of the senate assenting to it, with the President ratifying it.

Following the purported suspension of the CJN, the implications is that the President has suspended the constitution, in order to effect a change. As such, the president is on this note, no longer constitutionally recognized. One cannot suspend the constitution of the land at a time that it suits him or her.

Shehu is a political analyst interested in the activities of the government. He believes there is no smoke without fire, but he is also a firm believer in the Consitution.

Politics › Onnoghen: Supreme Court Justices Shun Inauguration Of Elections Tribunal by BeautifulMind2(op): 6:29pm On Jan 26, 2019
Justices of the Supreme Court on Saturday shunned the inauguration of members of the election petitions tribunal by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Mohammed.

The event was held at the Supreme Court Complex, Abuja on Saturday. It was observed that unlike the custom where justices of the Supreme Court attend such functions with the CJN, only one of the Supreme Court justices, Justice Sidi Dauda Bage, joined the Acting CJN, Justice Mohammed on the court podium.

The absence of the justices may not be unconnected with the crisis at the highest echelon of the nation’s judiciary following the corruption charges against the embattled CJN Walter Onnoghen over his alleged non-declaration of assets and his subsequent suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

The Acting CJN Mohammed swore-in 250 members of the election petitions tribunal panels for the 2019 general elections in the country.

Speaking during the inauguration, Justice Mohammed charged the tribunal members to know that they are accountable to God under the oath they have just sworn.

“This is an ethical undertaking to justice as well as uphold the Rule of Law in our courts. As such, I implore you to discharge your onerous duty diligently and with the fear of God Almighty. The judiciary is in trying times, and you must stand to protect and uphold the integrity of this arm of government,” he said.

“I therefore congratulate you on this appointment and I urge you to see this assignment as a call to greater service to your nation. I encourage you to uphold and enhance the honour and standing of the judiciary and I pray that the Almighty Allah will bestow upon you strength, good health and wisdom in the performance of your duties.”

The Acting CJN also apologised to the newly inaugurated election tribunal members for his inability to personally shake hands with each of them due to lack of time.

Officials of the Nigeria Justice Commission (NJC) has reacted to the alleged suspension of the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Buhari stating that the action is of no effect to the hierarchy of the Nigerian Judiciary headed by Justice Onnonghen.

Politics › Re: Governor Umahi Asks 2000 PDP Members To Receive President Buhari In Ebonyi, by BeautifulMind2: 11:25am On Jan 26, 2019
abc115:
David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, has directed at least 2000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari who will campaign in Ebonyi on Wednesday.

Umahi, a PDP governor, has also allowed the All Progressives Congress (APC) to use the Pa Ngele Oruta stadium, Abakaliki, for the party’s presidential rally.

He said the president would be accorded all necessary courtesy.

According to NAN, he disclosed this at the PDP governorship rally in Ugbodo, headquarters of Ebonyi local government area, on Friday.

“We would take our rallies on that day to our three senatorial zones while we allow them (APC) to use the stadium,” the governor was quoted to have said.

“At least, 2, 000 PDP members would receive the president at the stadium while you go about your rallies in your various zones.

“I have identified those who will receive the president; so, when you see our people at the stadium, don’t be angry, because it is my arrangement.

“We would even help them (opposition) with buses to get people from Enugu and Abia.”

He thanked the people for the support for his administration and pledged to do more if re-elected.

“I urge our party supporters not to destroy posters of the opposition party because we have the crowd and are on ground,” Umahi said.

The governor had endorsed Buhari even before the president made his reelection bid public.

You guys should stop deceiving yourselves read real news

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state yesterday berated the members of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in South East zone for poor
mobilization of supporters in the President Mohammadu Buhari’s rally that took place in Enugu state.

Umahi made this known at Ugbodo, the council headquarters of Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state while addressing PDP supporters at
a rally.

He lamented that President Buhari was embarrassed as a result of the empty stadium, but jokingly reiterated his readiness to lend 2000 members of
his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC to enable the party receive President Muhammadu Buhari who is billed to visit Ebonyi
State on Wednesday next week.

The governor explained that it would be embarrassing for the president to come to Ebonyi state without people to receive him, since the
supporters of APC in the state are not up to 1000 members.

He, however, shaved PDP state rally billed to hold Wednesday to receive President Buhari, adding that the gesture was to give the president
the necessary courtesy, so that he won’t come to Ebonyi and finds nobody to receive him.

Umahi said he will allow President Buhari to make use of the state township stadium now known as Pa Ngele Oruta township stadium.

The governor said he has identified the 2000 persons that would be at the stadium to receive the President and urged the PDP members not to
feel bad about it.

“On Wednesday, Mr. President is coming to Ebonyi, we shall accord him all necessary courtesy as a President and our friend. To honour him,
we will shift our rallies to three Senatorial zones to do our rallies and allow them to make use of the township stadium”

“I will take permission from you. You know, these people: the ruminants’ of the house of Saul, in totality, they are not up to 1000.
So, I am going to borrow them some people. Please, don’t say no. Just for people to be at the stadium.

The PDP members at the rally on hearing the gesture, chanted no! no! no! no! no! but Umahi overruled them.

He said: “I am going to overrule you. The people you will see there are going to be PDP members but they are not going to be more than
2000 to receive the President.

“This is to honour the president. So, whoever you see there, just knows that they are PDP members. We will not allow the president to
come here without our people receiving him.

“We will go ahead with our own rallies in the three geopolitical zones. We have identified the people that people that will go there.
So, if you see your people there don’t be angry.

“I am also going to help them with buses to bring people from Enugu and Abia states to make our state tick,” he said.

The governor also appealed to the people to vote the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi and
all other PDP candidates in the upcoming general elections in the state.

Umahi also flagged off the remaining 16km Nwiboko Obodo and announced that construction would commence on Monday.
