Politics › Fuel Scarcity: FG Not Contemplating Hike In Petrol Pump Price - SGF Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:00pm On Dec 23, 2017 |
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is not contemplating any form of hike in the pump price of petroleum products.
Mustapha disclosed this on Saturday at the handing over ceremony of the mantle of leadership as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Inland Waterways Authority at the authority’s headquarters in Lokoja.
He said that the fuel scarcity being experienced in the country over the last two weeks was being addressed by relevant agencies of government adding that the long queues would ease off soon.
The SGF attributed the scarcity to greed on the part of the marketers who created artificial shortfall to make profits.
Mustapha lamented the attitude of some Nigerians who derive pleasure from seeing others suffer by inflicting pains on the people adding that it was unfair and ungodly for marketers to take advantage of the rush by the people to celebrate Christmas and New year.
“I can assure the people that a day or two after the yuletide, the queue will ease out. The marketers created the scarcity but we have engaged all the relevant stakeholders and we are confident that it will soon normalise.
“We are not thinking about increase in the pump price. We have not discussed it and we will not increase the price” he said, adding that panic buying was unwarranted as there was much product available. http://punchng.com/fg-not-contemplating-hike-in-petrol-pump-price-sgf/Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › No Fuel Scarcity, Stakeholders Just Hoarding Products - APC Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 3:16pm On Dec 22, 2017 |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) says the scarcity of premium motor spirit (PMS) is artificial.
In a tweet on Friday, the ruling party blamed the unavailability of petroleum products on ” some stakeholders hoarding allocated products”.
It, however, regretted any inconvenience the scarcity might have brought Nigerians, saying relevant agencies were working on the issue.
“There’s no ‘actual scarcity’. Just some stakeholders hoarding allocated products in order to cause artificial scarcity + panic buying, for their own selfish interests,” the tweet read.
“However, it’s unaccountable, even as relevant authorities are on the matter. Any inconvenience is regretted.”
The return of fuel queues has entered its third week. Nigerians have taken to social media to lament the inconvenience.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has promised that the queues would end this week. https://www.thecable.ng/apc-fuel-scarcity-artificialhttps://mobile.twitter.com/APCNigeria/status/944185313462800384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thecable.ng%2Fapc-fuel-scarcity-artificial

Politics › Four Million Nigerians Became Jobless This Year - National Bureau Of Statistics by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:33pm On Dec 22, 2017 |
Between January and September this year, a total number of 4.07 million Nigerians became unemployed, an analysis of the unemployment report for the third quarter released by the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed.
The bureau in the report, made available to our correspondent on Friday, stated that the number of Nigerians that became unemployed rose from 11.92 million in the first quarter of this year to 13.58 million and 15.99 million in the second and third quarters respectively.
It said between the second quarter and third quarter, the number of economically active or working age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased from 110.3 million to 111.1 million.
The NBS report said the increasing unemployment and underemployment rates imply that although Nigeria’s economy is officially out of recession, domestic labor market is still fragile and economic growths in the past two quarters in 2017 have not been strong enough to provide employment in Nigeria’s domestic labor market.
It reads in part, “The labor force population increased from 83.9 million in Q2 2017 to 85.1 million in Q3 2017. The total number of people in full-time employment (at least 40 hours a week) declined from 52.7 million in Q2 2017 to 51.1 million in Q3 2017.
“The unemployment rate increased from 14.2 per cent in Q4 2016 to 16.2 per cent in Q2 2017 and 18.8 per cent in Q3 2017.
“The number of people within the labor force who are unemployed or underemployed increased from 13.6 million and 17.7 million respectively in Q2 2017, to 15.9 million and 18.0 million in Q3 2017.
“Total unemployment and underemployment combined increased from 37.2 per cent in the previous quarter to 40 per cent in Q3 2017.”
It said during the third quarter of this year, 21.2 per cent of women within the labor force that were between the ages of 15 years and 64 years and willing, able, and actively seeking work were unemployed, compared with 16.5 per cent of men within the same period.
The NBS noted in the report that in the third quarter of this year,16.4 per cent of rural and 23.4 per cent of urban dwellers within the labor force were unemployed. It added that the rate of unemployment is increasing at a slightly faster rate for urban dwellers than it was for their rural counterparts. http://punchng.com/four-million-nigerians-became-jobless-this-year-nbs/

Politics › Black Marketers Take Over As Filling Stations Run Dry Of Fuel by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:19am On Dec 22, 2017 |
....Petrol sells for N250 per litre in Lagos, Ogun
....NNPC: We’ll end scarcity this weekend A fuel crisis-free Christmas is now uncertain in Nigeria, New Telegraph can authoritatively report. This is because more filling stations in Lagos and Ogun states yesterday ‘ran dry’ of the product, four days to the festive period. The crisis, a survey by this newspaper showed, led to the return of black marketers, who have practically taken over sales of petrol from filling stations in major parts of the states.
The tanker drivers, who also were not certain of crisis-free Yuletide, also frowned at Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC’s) monopoly on fuel importation, calling on government to encourage marketers to complement the corporation’s efforts.
While marketers, including those on the franchise of the NNPC, shut their gates against motorists, the black marketers freely sold the product for N250 per litre. At the NNPC station at Adura bus stop, along Lagos- Abeokuta Expressway, the attendants gave preference to the black marketers, who besieged the stations in tens of 50-litre kegs, above the motorists who were on long queues.
Many filling stations on the stretch of the expressway, whose gates were shut when this newspaper visited, told our reporter that they had no fuel in their tanks. Some of the marketers, that were dispensing, gave preference to customers with kegs while others like the NNPC at Adura bus stop has, according to observation by New Telegraph, adjusted it pump for profit sake.
The same situation was observed at the NNPC UTurn on the same expressway before gun-wielding police officers and some soldiers chased the black marketers and motorcycle riders out of the station’s premises. “I am so tired of this country,” a septuagenarian taxi driver, who simply identified himself as Mr. Lamidi lamented. Lamidi had stayed on the queue for seven hours. He queried the reason Nigerians must be subjected to unnecessary anguish anytime Yuletide is approaching.
“This is the third filling station that the search for petrol has taken me to in the last 24 hours. I have queued up for seven hours and when it was three vehicles before me, they said they would not sell the fuel again. I feel like dying; I have lost hope,” he added. While Conoil along the Yaya Abatan road in Ogba told New Telegraph reporter who had gone to buy fuel that they have ran dry of the product, attendants at the station, on pretence of trying to render help, asked our correspondent to bring N4,000 for 10 litres of the product.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday said fuel queues would disappear by this weekend. The corporation blamed the current scarcity on marketers, saying that part of the problem was the rumours about purported planned increase in the pump price of petrol. NNPC stated that some marketers, in their quest to cash in on the situation, suddenly started hoarding products. “But we swiftly swung into action by doubling our supply nationwide. At the time the rumour started, we had about 30-day sufficiency.
“The normal daily supply to the nation is 700 trucks, equalling about 27- 30 million litres per day,” Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, the spokesperson of the corporation said in a statement yesterday. He assured Nigerians that the corporation had doubled its daily supply of petrol from daily 700 trucks (about 27 million – 30 million litres per day supply) to 80 million litres since the current hiccup in the supply chain was noticed a few days back.
Assuring that the fuel situation would fizzle out this week, Baru warned marketers against hoarding, stressing that any filling station found wanting in this regard would lose its entire products to motorists. According to Ughamadu, there has been an increase in the number of incoming trucks of petrol into the FCT to curb the queues in the city.
He said the NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, had met with the heads of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Petrol Tanker Drivers (PTD) to nip the problem in the bud, adding that a nation that consumed 35 million litres suddenly increased consumption to 85 million litres due to diversion to neighbouring countries.
“He said Lagos should be maintained at 300 trucks, but the actual figure coming into Abuja should be increased by 150. “Port Harcourt refinery has also increased refining and so by tomorrow (Friday) queues should normalise and by weekend, it would have disappeared,” Ughamadu said. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/12/black-marketers-take-filling-stations-run-dry-fuel/ |

Politics › Nigeria's Attorney General, Abubakar Malami Speaks On Innoson CEO's Arrest by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:06pm On Dec 21, 2017 |
The Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, has said that he is yet to briefed on the facts that led to the arrest and detention of the chairman of Innoson Motors company, Innocent Chukwuma, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Mr. Malami stated this on Thursday while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, at the Presidential Villa Abuja. The FEC meeting which was started on Wednesday was concluded Thursday afternoon. It was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The arrest of Mr. Chukwuma has generated controversy with many saying the EFCC over-reached itself by getting involved in a commercial matter between a bank and its client. The EFCC, however, said Mr. Chukwuma jumped bail and is being investigated for alleged forgery.
Speaking Thursday on the matter, Mr. Malami said, “In all sincerity, l wasn’t privy to facts that led to the stated arrest. I haven’t been briefed by relevant agencies.
“But one thing l know is the fact that there has been a case between him and the GTBank that is pending in court and it is being prosecuted.
“Until I am briefed by relevant arrest agencies, I am not in a clear position to make any disclosure about the arrest.” Mr. Chukwuma, arrested on Tuesday, was granted bail on Wednesday by the EFCC.
Mr. Malami also told reporters that FEC approved two memos he submitted for consideration on Thursday.
The first one, he said, relates to a Copyright Bill which is intended to be transmitted from the executive arm to the National Assembly.
Mr. Malami said the bill also relates to the creative industry. He said it is meant to ensure the protection of creative works against piracy and protection of intellectual property rights.
“The bill was approved by the council and the attorney-general had been accordingly instructed to send the bill to the National Assembly for passage into law and eventual assent by the president if passed,” he said.
The AGF said the second memo that was presented from the Federal Ministry of Justice was on the suppression of piracy and maritime offences.
He said the intention is to accord protection to the maritime industry against piracy and “indeed come up with a comprehensive policy position incorporated into the bill which is intended to ensure that at the end of the day, the international convention that has been ratified by Nigeria overtime in relation to maritime industry is incorporated into the bill with a view to bringing it in line with international best practices and to ensure the protection of Nigeria’s maritime boundary.
“The same bill as processed by the Office of the Attorney-General has been approved by the council and the attorney-general has accordingly been instructed to send the bill to the National Assembly for passage and eventual assent by the president if passed by the National Assembly,” Mr. Malami said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/253230-nigerias-attorney-general-speaks-arrest-innoson-motors-chief.htmlhtmlLalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › FG Probes Jonathan Over N8.68bn Textbooks Contract.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:19am On Dec 21, 2017 |
...FEC awards N377.5bn contractsThe Federal Executive Council (FEC) has ordered the immediate investigation of a contract awarded under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the distribution of books to schools across the country.
Government, in August 2013, had awarded contract worth N8.68 billion for the printing and distribution of textbooks as well as library materials for public primary schools’ classes one to six and junior secondary schools.
FEC, which commenced yesterday at about 11a.m. shortly after the swearing-in of seven Permanent Secretaries at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The meeting was rescheduled to continue today. Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, said however that Council resolved to investigate dthe istribution of textbooks to schools in the country between 2009 and 2011. Amaechi said it would be done before commencement of distribution of N6.9 billion textbooks for schools in the country.
The Minister of Transport said Council approved production and distribution of core textbooks for early education classes 1-3 and for primary 4-6 in public schools nationwide. He said: “The Federal Government felt there is a need to support in funding education, not just the instruction, but also the individuals who occupy the institution at the cost of N6.9 billion
“Council also gave approval for Jos Central Library and the construction of the Faculty of Animal Sciences and Engineering.
“For Ministry of Transport, we had approval for two vessels called Pilot Cutters to escort vessels into the seaport. Prior to this, we were hiring. Now we have approval for NPA to buy theirs at the cost of N1.9 billion. “Also, council approved another two vessels of 17 meters in the eastern port that will help monitor and assist vessels into the seaport at the cost of N1.2 billion.
“Council also approved the award of contract for direct procurement of installation and commissioning of Wide Area of multilateration for the Gulf of Guinea at the cost of N3.9 billion. This is to help capture those equipment flying below the radar, for us to be able to pick them because it will be dangerous if we cannot because a lot of them use helicopters.
“There was also an approval for the consultancy services to construct a new terminal building at Mallam Aminu Kano Airport. We just want to complete the payment, which is N621 million.
“Council also approved the purchase of flight calibration inspection at the cost of N111.6 million. “One other key project that was approved is the engagement of consultants for the project management, monitoring and evaluation including media and public relations services of the UNEP report.”
Council also approved over N377.5 billion for infrastructure projects, which include roads, power, education, water, health among others.
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, while giving details on this, said that the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano project will cost N155.7 billion and is expected to be completed within three years. Efire-Araromi-Aiyede-Aiyela road to connect Ondo and Ogun states at a cost of N14.4 billion.
On the Enugu-Onitsha highway, the Amansia section, he said the Council approved the variations of the cost of N38.74 billion to enable the contractor progress with the work. Fashola said that the Jos Central Library would cost N597.4 million.
He also said Council approved the completion of Police Service Commission headquarters in Abuja. According to him, the project was approved for variation to enable its completion over the next six months. He said the initial cost was N3.486 billion and it has been increased to N3.925 billion, which has a variation of N439.113 million.
He said Council also gave approval for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Mausoleum in Anambra State. The project was started, but not completed from previous administration. He said: “Council approved the additional funding to complete it from N1.496 billion N1.953 billion.”
Fashola said Council also approved money for the intervention of education and healthcare. It approved the provision of independent power plant to nine universities and one teaching hospital as the first phase of the pilot programme to cover 37 universities at the cost of N38.965 billion.
In his remarks, the Minister of Water Resources, Suliaman Adamu said Council ratified augmentation of funds to complete Adada dam Igbo-Etiti LGA in Enugu State. “The project was started in 2010. This project has been augmented and council approved that the project be completed now at N5.6 billion by the end of 2018.
“Council also approved the augmentation of phase II Galma Dam and irrigation project in Kaduna Zaria. The phase I dam has already been completed while phase II involves irrigation and some additional structures. So, there was an augmentation to raise the project N16.5 billion in favour of Gilmore Nig. Ltd.”
Also briefing, the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, said Council approved the completion of the Goodluck Jonathan Way in the FCT that links traffic from Keffi-Nyanya into the city. “We got an augmentation of an additional N3.8 billion and with the funding, the road will be completed any moment from now,” Bello said. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/12/fg-probes-jonathan-n8-68bn-textbooks-contract/ |

Politics › Jonathan Got $2bn: Governor Yari Defends $1bn Insurgency Fund.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:22am On Dec 20, 2017 |
Abdulaziz Yari, governor of Zamfara state and chairman of Nigeria governors’ forum, says there is nothing wrong with the approval of $1 billion for the fight against insurgency.
Addressing reporters after a meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja, Yari said the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan got twice the amount approved for the current administration.
He said his colleagues decided to shun partisan politics when accepting that the money should be taken from the excess crude account.
“Nigeria governors forum discussed this issue at our November meeting and we agreed across party lines that this thing was done in 2014 where $2 billion was taken in agreement with the governors,” he said.
“And Governor Akpabio was the one who moved the motion at the time. This time around, we realised that there was need to purchase equipment for the military, so we felt we should not compromise the issue of security for the entire country.
“As governors, we agreed to forfeit $1 billion of our of own share of excess crude account which we are going to back up with state assembly resolution at a later time.
“This is not the first time a decision like this is being taken, it happened during Jonathan’s era. They took $2 billion. We all agreed at that time collectively in the same chamber to withdraw $2 billion to procure equipment for the military and also for logistics for the military because they were telling us, whether it was true or false that our soldiers were being killed. Some went to social media to say that they were being killed like rats because they didn’t have equipment. That was what generated discussions at the time and there was no controversy, there was no opposition.
“The $2 billion taken under Jonathan’s time did was not backed up by any resolution from the state assemblies.”
Yari also recalled how N5 billion was spent on Niger Delta during the time of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
“There was this decision under Yar’Adua when they were sourcing funds for Niger Delta Power Holdings. They took over N5 billion for power generation, we followed the same process,” he said.
“The money was withdrawn from the excess crude account, and our respective houses of assembly confirmed the resolution.
“We shouldn’t play politics with the issue of national security.”
On the opposition mounted by Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, Yari said: “Gentlemen, this is democracy. Each and every person has his own way to want to look at things and you cannot stop him from agitation.”
Yari also clarified what Fayose meant by saying he did not give his consent.
“At the governors forum, 12 members form quorum. At the time we took this decision, we had 32 members in attendance and there was no single opposition to the decision,” he said.
“If anybody has his own way that he wants things to go, we had the majority and there was no even minority opinion at that meeting. We look at the country Nigeria first before any other issue, it is only when you have the country that you can have the politics.” https://www.thecable.ng/jonathan-got-2bn-says-yari-defends-1-bn-boko-haram-fundLalasticlala, Mynd44 |
