Politics › Sick Leave: Nigerians Have Right To Know Buhari's Health Status - Reps by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:35am On Feb 08, 2017 |
ABUJA—SOME members of the House of Representatives yesterday declared that Nigerians have the right to know the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari.
They, however, prayed for the quick recovery of the President.
In his view, chairman, Committee on Public Accounts, Kingsley Chinda, PDP Rivers, said: “There’s need for the government to give us a blow by blow account of Mr President’s condition truly and not Lai Mohammed’s type of accounts.
“As of right, Nigerians are entitled to know the state of their President’s health at all times because he’s fed with our money, he’s sustained with our money, we pay his medical bills, he belongs to us, he’s our property and we have a right to know his state at all times.
Speaking in a similar vein, chairman, Committee on Public Petitions, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, PDP, Ukwa East/West Fed Constituency, Abia, said the absence of Buhari from office, due to a prolonged ailment, was justified because he followed due process by informing both legislative chambers.
The Abia lawmaker explained: “Mr President’s absence from office is in line with the law of nature because anybody could fall ill anytime, even you can travel and fall ill outside the country.
“I do not see any implication in the extended vacation as all we need to do now is to pray for his quick recovery because he’s state property as it is now.
“Nigerians should go on their knees to pray for him to recover and take back his mantle of leadership in piloting the affairs of the nation.
“He has officially written to NASS though we’ve not seen copies because we adjourned plenary but then he owes us no details since he has satisfied our constitutional requirements.’’
In his comments, Daniel Reyenieju, PDP, Warri Fed Constituency, simply said: “There is nothing wrong with being sick because it’s a natural phenomenon about life.
“But what I’m worried about is the manner the information around Mr President was managed because Nigerians are so eager to know the state of his health. And we are all aware of the fact that this is not the first time a Nigerian president is falling ill in office.’’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/nigerians-right-know-buharis-health-status-reps/

Politics › Boko Haram Gave Me N200 To Detonate Explosive - Teenage Suicide Bomber by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:40pm On Feb 07, 2017 |
An 18-year-old Boko Haram suicide bomber, Amina, who was intercepted by men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on Tuesday in Maiduguri, said she was given N200 for the mission.
She told the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri that she was abducted two years ago by the sect members in Madagali, Adamawa, and taken to Sambisa forest. “They gave us N200 each which they said we should use to buy food for ourselves. “It took us three days to come to Maiduguri on a motorcycle. We were directed by the sect members to detonate our explosives any where we saw any form of gathering. “They said if we press the button, the bomb would explode and we will automatically go to heaven. “I was scared, so, I told them that I could not detonate any explosive. So, they said if Zainab detonated her own, it would serve the purpose. “On our way to Maiduguri, we encountered the military and they were shooting. I was very scared and the people that brought us ran away. “I am from Imam Shekau’s faction of Boko Haram, even though I have never seen Shekau. But I hear about him in Gobarawa,” Amina said.
She said that her father, mother and younger brother, Umar, were all killed when they tried to escape from the Boko Haram enclave where they were held hostage.
“We came from Gobarawa along Damboa, Madagali and Algarno axis, in a community where a lot of us were held hostage and married off by the sect members. “I also am married to a Boko Haram Commander known as “Amir”.
The NSCDC Commandant in Borno, Abdullahi Ibrahim, said the command had handed over the suspect to the Garrison Commander, 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, “for proper investigation’’.
The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maiduguri, Lucky Irabor, confirmed that the suspect was in custody of the Army, and that she would undergo investigation.
“We are going to profile her as she would give us the lead to get to other insurgents,” Mr. Irabor said.
NAN reports that personnel of the NSCDC had earlier intercepted two female suicide bombers, who tried to ram into motorists at the NNPC Mega Station along Damboa Road, Maiduguri.
The Commandant of the corps, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said that the incident occurred at about 6.45 a.m.
“Our personnel at the NNPC station intercepted two female suicide bombers who were targeting motorists on the long queue at the NNPC mega petrol station at about 6.45 a.m.
“One of the bombers got scared and threw away her bomb and was instantly arrested, while the other one began to run after people with her explosive but luckily, she was shot on the leg by our personnel after he chased her to a safe place,” Mr. Ibrahim said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/222868-boko-haram-gave-n200-detonate-explosive-teenage-suicide-bomber.html

Politics › Killings: Christian Association Of Nigeria Accuses Lai Mohammed Of Cover Up by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:08pm On Feb 07, 2017 |
He wondered if the Minister was accusing them of lying that Christian are being killed, maimed and burnt by the Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast, apart from other kililings by herdsmen in Plateau, Benue and Southern Kaduna states. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accused information minister Lai Mohammed of disparaging Christian leaders and covering up attacks against Christians in the country.
In a statement, president of CAN, Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, they were “disappointed but not surprised with the lies and abusive statements credited to the Minister in Ilorin during the Town hall meeting where he was accusing religious leaders of making alleged provocative statements that can lead to religious war.
"We want to boldly declare that Nigerian Christians love their country and they not only promote peace and unity but also always pray for her and the leadership. In the last one year, the Christian Association of Nigeria has declared fasting and prayers for Nigeria and her leadership twice. If we are thirsty for a war, we wouldn't have gone that far," Ayokunle was quoted in a statement signed by his spokesman Pastor Adebayo Oladeji.
He wondered if the Minister was accusing them of lying that Christian are being killed, maimed and burnt by the Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast, apart from other kililings by herdsmen in Plateau, Benue and Southern Kaduna states.
He added: "Is Lai Mohammed saying we are lying that those responsible for these killings profess Islam as their religion? That those who killed Madam Bridget Agbahime in Kano were Muslims who were arrested but later discharged and acquitted by the court as requested by the State Attorney- General and Commissioner of Justice?
"That those who killed Madam Eunice Elisha Olawale while doing the morning preaching in Kubwa, Abuja were Muslim fundamentalists who were arrested but also freed by the Police? When all those killings were going on, was there any time Lai Mohammed or anyone in the Federal Government raised a voice against the atrocities?" http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/killings-can-accuses-lai-of-cover-up/184331.htmlLalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › Senate To Screen Ambassadorial Nominees Today.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:05am On Feb 07, 2017 |
The Senate will on Tuesday (today) begin the screening of 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees for whom President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking legislative approval.
A notice by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which would conduct the screening exercise, was sighted by our correspondent on Monday.
The exercise is expected to be coordinated by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; and the Vice-Chairman, Senator Shehu Sani.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on January 12, 2017, announced that Buhari had revised the list of the nominees.
The Senate had on November 15, 2016, rejected the first version of the list after receiving over 250 petitions against the nominees.
Due to the controversy in the nominations, the lawmakers had resolved that the first list be sent back to President Buhari “for resubmission and re-jigging.”
The Senate took the decision based on the recommendation of its Committee on Foreign Affairs in its report.
Two of the nominees on the first list – a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs. Paulen Tallen; and a former member of the House of Representatives, Usman Bugaje – who rejected their nominations, were dropped from the second list.
Lagos, which had three slots in the first list, now has two, with the removal of Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora from the nominees.
A slot was also taken from Rivers State, leaving it with one nominee.
The Federal Capital Territory and Imo State, which had no representation in the first list, now have a nominee each on the second list.
The amended list now has Dr. Uzoma Ememke (Abia State), Dr. Clifford Zirra (replaced with Aminu Iyawo) (Adamawa), Maj.-Gen. Godwin Umo (retd.) (Akwa Ibom), Christopher Okeke (Anambra), Yusuf Tuggar (Bauchi), Baba Madugu (Bauchi), Brig.-Gen. Stanley Diriyai (Bayelsa), Enyantu Ifenne (replaced with Steven Ugba) (Benue), Mohammed Hayatuddeen (replaced with Baba Ahmad Jidda)(Borno) and Dr. Etubom Asuquo (Cross River).
Also on the list are Francis Efeduma (Delta), Jonah Odo (Ebonyi), Uyagwe Igbe (Edo), Ayodele Ayodeji (replaced with Eniola Ajayi) (Ekiti), Maj.-Gen. Chris Eze (retd.) (Enugu), Suleiman Hassan (Gombe), Justice Sylvanus Nsofor (Imo), Amin Muhammad Dalhatu (Jigawa), Muhammad Yaro (replaced with Ahmed Bamalli) (Kaduna), Deborah Iliya (Kaduna), Prof. D. Abdulkadir (Kano), Haruna Ungogo (Kano), Justice lsa Dodo (Katsina), Dr. Usman Bugaje (replaced with Mohammadu Barade) (Katsina), Tijjani Bande (Kebbi), Prof. Y. O. Aliu (Kogi) and Nuruddeen Mohamed (Kwara).
Others are Mohamed Yisa (Kwara), Justice George Oguntade (retd.) (Lagos), Senator Olorunimbe Mamora (slot removed) (Lagos), Modupe Irele (Lagos), Musa Muhammad (Nasarawa), Ahmed Ibeto (Niger), Ade Asekun (replaced with Suzanne Folarin) (Ogun), Sola Iji (replaced with Jacob Daodu) (Ondo), Adegboyega Ogunwusi (replaced with Afolahan Adeyemi) (Osun), Maj.-Gen. Ashimiyu Olaniyi (retd.) (Oyo), Pauline Tallen (replaced with James Dimka) (Plateau) and Dr. Haruna Abdullahi (Plateau).
Orji Ngofa (Rivers), Justice Sylvanus Nsofor (slot removed) (Rivers), Jamila Ahmadu-Suka (replaced with Sahabi Gada) (Sokoto), Kabiru Umar (Sokoto), Mustapha Jaji (replaced with Hassan Ardo) (Taraba), Goni Bura (Yobe), Garba Gajam (Zamfara) and Cpt. Abdullahi Uba Garbasi (replaced with Cpt. Bala Mairiga) (Zamfara), were also nominated.
State governors, especially in the ruling All Progressives Congress, had protested against their non-involvement in the selection of the non-career ambassadorial nominees by Buhari.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Monsurat
Sunmonu, while presenting the report, had said much “uproar, noise and
petitions” had greeted the nomination of those on the non-career list.
Sunmonu said, “We have received over 250 petitions and we found it difficult to
conduct the screening (of the nominees). We have resolved to send back the list of the 46 nominees back to the executive for them to look at
the issues (with the nominations).” http://punchng.com/senate-screen-ambassadorial-nominees-today/Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › FG To Nigerians: Prevail On Senators To Approve $30bn Loan by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:59am On Feb 07, 2017 |
The Federal Government has asked Nigerians to prevail on the National Assembly to approve the $30 billon loan proposal that was submitted to them last year by President Muhammudu Buhari to fund key policy programmes and reflate the economy.
Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, made the call at the North Central edition of the Town Hall meeting organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The minister noted that the railway sector is supposed to get $6.1 billion from the package for the building of standard gauge railways across the country.
He said the loan for the sector had been approved by the Chinese government, but was being delayed by the refusal of the federal legislators to approve it.
He drew attention to the multiplier effects of the project if the loan was approved. He said: “Ask the National Assembly to kindly approve the borrowing plan sent to them.
As citizens of this country, please help us to ask them to approve the plan. “China has already approved the loan, the only thing limiting us is the refusal of the National Assembly to approve the plan. As citizens of Nigeria in the North Central, please help us ask the National Assembly to approve the plan.”
He said the Federal Government had secured $7.5 billion loan for the construction of standard rail gauge from Lagos to Kano. According to him, the loan was secured from a Chinese bank and the ministry is waiting for approval of the National Assembly to access the loan.
He said that $1.4 billion was for the construction of the rail gauge from Lagos to Ibadan while $6.1 billion would be used on Ibadan–Ilorin–Minna-Kaduna– Kano line.
The minister added that Kaura Namoda–Funtua rail line would be revived. He, therefore, urged Nigerians to impress it on the National Assembly to approve the loan for work on the project to commence.
He added that the central rail project from Itakpe to Warri would be completed before the end of 2017, while narrow gauge line from Ilorin–Minna would also commence during the year.
Amaechi said plans were under way to connect Abuja to other parts of the country through the central line at Warri, while the Jos Inland Port would be completed in June, this year.
He said that a Lagos- Ijebu-Ode-Ore-Benin- Asaba-Agbor-Onitsha- Sapele-Yenagoa-Port Harcourt-Uyo and Calabar coastal rail line would also be constructed.
He said that work on the Eastern rail flank linking Aba to Port Harcourt, Makurdi, Enugu and Jos, would commence in June.
The minister said that Ekiti would be linked by rail through Osogbo and would run to Ilorin, Minna and Kano. He said that the ministry had sought approval to purchase more coaches and locomotives for the Abuja-Kaduna light rail.
Amaechi, who said he would first speak in his capacity as the former Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation that midwifed the election of the present administration, told the audience the time for excuses were over.
“We will not disappoint Nigerians, if anyone tells you we will, that person is deceiving you. Although, you won’t believe it if we tell you that we are also suffering, just because we are ministers.
“I think the message you want us to hear is that things are difficult and I can say government has heard you. But we need to correct certain wrong impression they are giving you.
“We knew when we took over that there were challenges. As chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, we knew there was corruption, we saw how people were carting money away in bags, but many of you didn’t believe me when I said that.
You will recall that I started the issue of missing $29 billion and then the arguments began and up till now, we don’t know what happened. Even if it was $10 billion and it was recovered, just imagine how far that would have helped us today. “But we are no longer going to complain about the challenges we met in office.
Don’t forget that we are not Jesus Christ; we didn’t promise we would solve our problems in one year, otherwise you would have given us one-year mandate.
But you gave us four years, so wait till that four years to complain.” In his contribution, Minister of State for Mineral Development, Hon. Abubakar Bwari, explained that the Federal Government was committed to the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Mills, pointing out that an audit of the company is being currently undertaken after which interested investors would be invited to make bids.
He explained that government could not hand over the project to its initial developers because the consortium that built the project came from the old USSR and is no longer under one entity.
On her part, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Hajia Zainab Ahmed, put the inflation rate at 18 per cent. She advised Nigerians to reduce their over-dependence on imported goods as a way of bringing down the high rate of foreign exchange. According to Ahmed, it is necessary for the people to shun imported foods like wheat and patronize locally grown rice.
Others at the event include the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, his counterpart from the Water Resources Ministry, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, Professor Isaac Adewole (Health), Aisha Abubakar (Industry, Trade and Investment). https://newtelegraphonline.com/news/fg-nigerians-prevail-senators-approve-30bn-loan/
