Politics › We Are Going To Be Very Proud Of Our Country Once Again - Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:42am On Sep 07, 2016 |
ABUJA— Pentecostal Bishops Forum, yesterday, told President Muhammadu Buhari that there was hunger in the land.
The clerics made their feelings known after a closed door meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Their cry came as President Buhari, at the campaign of All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship election rally in Benin City, Edo State, assured Nigerians that the nation’s economy would soon get out of its current doldrums, even as Vice President Osinbajo blamed the country’s economic quagmire on bad governance and corruption of past leaderships.
The bishops, however, appealed to the President to hire experts to help him fix the economy, saying Nigeria needed not to lose its greatness in the comity of nations.
Speaking to State House correspondents through their chairman, Archbishop John Praise Daniel, after the meeting, the bishops said it was imperative that Nigeria was brought back from the path of poverty and hunger.
He said they were in the Villa to tell the President about the effects of some social vices, including the killings by Fulani herdsmen.
“We came from all over the north, we came to pay a courtesy call on the VP. We came to congratulate him and thank the government for their efforts so far since they came in about a year ago, especially in stamping out the Boko Haram menace and in ensuring security all over the nation.
“We came to also talk to him on the need for the nation to work together in unity, to move on in peace, the disturbing factor of the Fulani herdsmen, and to give our advice on how the government can foster unity, peace and progress.
“We are a united nation and nobody should be thinking individually but collectively of making Nigeria great. And, also, let the government know that, yes, we have agreed we are in recession, the people down there who we lead are suffering.
“There are cries all over the place and let the government do whatever it can to alleviate the sufferings.
“We thank God that the President promised he will look at the hunger Nigerians are going through and we do believe that because the President is a man of integrity, he will follow up on his words to ensure that the sufferings of Nigerian masses are reduced. If we have all the infrastructure working, things will work.
“Agreed, we are suffering from the effect of misrule of past leadership. All the same, we believe Nigeria is a great nation, and we can work together with our genuineness, our commitment and our intellectual intelligence to move this nation forward. And they should not be afraid to look for economic experts.
“They should not stop to get who can help in our economic recovery to ensure everything goes on well so that this country can bounce back as a great nation that we have always been. We want to ensure this country remains the great nation we have always dreamt and talked about,” Daniel said.
We’ll come out of our economic doldrums
But the President at his party’s governorship campaign in Benin, said the economy would soon come out of its present parlous state, having also recorded remarkable improvements in security, especially in the North East.
He said: “I assure you that we are going to get out of our economic doldrums, we are almost out of our security problem and we are going to make Nigeria greater again.
“We are going to be very proud of our country once again, our size, our resources will not be for nothing. We will continue to grow.”
Osinbajo blames it on corruption, bad governance
Responding to the call of the bishops, Vice President Osinbajo said corruption and bad governance were responsible for the present economic quagmire in the country, but noted that there was great hope that the country would prosper.
He said: “This country has been badly governed. We are dealing, for instance, with the embezzlement of fundsto the tune of $15 billion in one sector alone.
“We have not turned attention to the oil and gas sector, where the former CBN governor alleged that $20 billion was stolen. We must condemn and stand up against this level of corruption. It is the single most important reason of the current state of the country. We can’t ignore it.”
He called on Christian and other religious leaders in the country to condemn corruption “openly”, adding that “we can’t say because they are Christians or Muslims, we won’t condemn those involved in corruption.
“The country has been systematically destroyed. Our currency depreciated because we don’t have the reserves to back it. At the height of the oil boom, there were no savings,” Osinbajo noted.
He stated that the vandalisation of pipelines in the Niger Delta had worsen the situation, with the country losing about 1 million barrels of oil per day for up to six months now.
“That is the background for the sort of situation we find ourselves. God surely has a plan for this country. We (as a government) are open, honest, transparent and we shall use the resources of this country very well,” Osinbajo assured. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/theres-hunger-land-well-overcome-buhari/

Politics › Herdsmen Attack: Buhari's Silence Fueling Continous Attack- Christian Group Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:20am On Sep 07, 2016 |
*NSCDC allays fears of reprisal attack on Anambra, Imo communities
*As Ugwuanyi inaugurates security committeeBy Enyim Enyim, Francis Igata, Chinedu Adonu & Ifunanya Ozogwu ENUGU—THE chairman Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Rev. Dr. Goddy Madu, yesterday blamed the rampaging activities of herdsmen across the country on the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The PFN chairman in Enugu State, Rev. Goddy Madu described the herdsmen as “Boko Haram in disguise and agents of Islamization.”
His words: “The recent attack on Attakwu community of Enugu State is what we can no longer condone in any way. It was deadly and unprovoked attack on a peace-loving community and this happened while we are yet to recover from the massacre at Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Council Area.
“We are not happy over the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari over these attacks. He should make a strong statement to stop these useless and wicked attacks by Fulani herdsmen.
“He is busy sending soldiers after Boko Haram, Niger Delta Avengers and the rest, with the exception of Fulani herdsmen, who now terrorize good citizens of Nigeria without recourse.”
Madu, however, called on the various South-East communities to initiate steps towards defending themselves, stressing that “you should not fold your hands and watch these wicked herdsmen destroy your villages. You should try to safeguard your lands and farm.”
CAN tasks Enugu Assembly, others Similarly, the Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Enugu State chapter, Rev. Jospeh Ajujungwa has called on the Enugu State House of Assembly and other South-East states to immediately enact laws that would put an end to the deadly activities of herdsmen.
“The only way to end this menace is by enacting a law. The House of Assembly should do this as a matter of urgency.Ekiti State has taken the lead in this regard and Enugu has suffered from the activities of herdsmen more than Ekiti”, he noted.
NSCDC allays fear of reprisal attacks Meanwhile, Anambra State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Mr. Godwin Omorege has dismissed as false and mischievous stories making the rounds that the dreaded Fulani herdsmen were planning a reprisal attack on border communities around Imo and Anambra States.
Penultimate week, irate youths in Akokwa community of Imo State near Anambra were said to have attacked an Hausa/Fulani settlement in the area for allegedly killing a woman and a young girl .
Following the development, border communities namely Umuchu, Amaesi in Anambra and Akokwa, Osina in Imo State have become apprehensive over rumours that the Hausa/Fulani communities that fled the area as a result of the attack have regrouped to launch a reprisal attack on them.
Speaking with the Vanguard in his Awka office, Omorege noted that there was no such plot by the herdsmen, adding that security personnel have been beefed up as a proactive measure against any possible attack.
Ugwuanyi inaugurates security committee Also in Enugu state, the attacks by Fulani herdsmen which have claimed 17 lives in the last four months, yesterday, prompted Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to formally inaugurate a constituted Security Committee.
The committee, Vanguard gathered, is an all inclusive Committee which is distinct from the State Security Council, and has as its Chairman, a regarded and vastly experienced former senior member of the nation’s Armed Forces in the person of Brigadier General Fred Eze (rtd).
In a well attended inaugural ceremony that attracted traditional, religious, judicial stakeholders among others,Ugwuanyi, while explaining the choice of Eze said,”in service, Brigadier General,Eze held many important and strategic positions among which were; Sector Commander Sector South and simultaneously, Nigerian Contingent Commander African Union/ United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfu-Sudan; Chief of Staff Infantry Corps Centre Jaji-Kaduna,, Deputy Director Plans, Department of Policy and Plans, Defence Headquarters, Garki Abuja; Team Leader, United Nations Mission in Congo (MONUC), Democratic Republic of Congo; Company Commander, Nibatt 1 (29 bn), United Nations Protection Force (Unprpfor), Croatia, Former Yugoslavia and many others.
“In addition to being the Chairman of this Security Committee, Brigadier General Eze has also been appointed the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters.
“The Committee also comprises members of the Enugu State Executive Council, members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, the Security Agencies, Local Government Council Chairmen, representatives of the Fulani, Shuwa Arab and Hausa communities in Enugu State, representatives of Cattle Market Traders, Traditional Rulers, President Generals of Town Unions, Neighbourhood Watch Associations, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Student leaders in Enugu State.
“Similar committees are to be constituted in each Local Government Council and in each political ward in the state.
“Enugu State is in the hands of God and as we all know, she is rated as one of the most secure and peaceful states in the country. Also, the State capital Enugu, continues to enjoy a pride of place as the first and only city in the country to be listed among the 100 most resilient cities of the world.
“The constitution of this Committee was necessitated by the desire of this administration to consolidate this enviable status of the state through the continued maintenance of a high level of security and the elimination and prevention of circumstances or incidents that threaten peace and security of lives and properties in the state
“The Committee is therefore charged with the responsibility of taking all necessary and lawful measures to ensure security and lasting peace and harmony among various communities and in all corners of the State.
“I therefore enjoin all members of the committee, to approach this all important task with requisite zeal, sincerity and commitment, in the interest of all citizens and the entire society. I assure them of the full support and cooperation of the State Government towards the attainment of the Committee’s set objectives”. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/herdsmen-attack-buharis-silence-fuelling-continuous-attack-pfn/

Politics › Military Kills Five Red Scorpion Members In Imo by BeeBeeOoh(op): 3:39am On Sep 06, 2016 |
– Five member of the Red Scorpion militant group have been killed in Imo state
– The militants were shot dead by men of the Joint Military Task Force
– he militant group reportedly escaped with bullet woundsThe Joint Military Task Force (JMTF) has reportedly killed 5 members of the militant Red Scorpion operating in the oil bearing communities of the Awarra/Assa in Ohaji/ Egbema council area of Imo state.
Daily Sun reports that the militants were shot dead yesterday, September 6 by the JMTF which stormed the affected areas at the weekend.
The task force sneaked into the restive communities in a tipper, took the militants by surprise, killed five militants on the spot while others reportedly escaped with bullet injuries.
One of the leaders of the militant group identified as Banga who escaped, had his house razed allegedly by the security operatives.
The invasion may not be unconnected with the presidential directive to the military high command to flush out all militant groups in Niger Delta.
In recent times, the communities of Awara and Assa had been under the siege of both militants and cult groups, forcing people out of their homes.
Confirming the presence of security operatives in the communities, the state police command public relations officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said the force have always been sending security team to the communities to quell crisis.
Bothered by the activities of militants in Niger Delta and elsewhere, the President warned them to stop or face full military action.
Sources reveal that the military had to use helicopters to dislodge militants from Arepo in Ogun State and some other areas in Lagos state recently.
The militants went to the extent of kidnapping high profile members of the society including a monarch in Lagos.
Meanwhile, 21 suspected criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery and car snatching were yesterday paraded by the Abia state commissioner of police, Mr Leye Oyebade.
Also, two kidnap victims were rescued by the police team at Ugwunagbo Local Government Area.
Speaking while parading the hoodlums, Oyebade said the police, acting on a tip-off, stormed the hideout of the hoodlums and rescued the kidnap victims, who were held hostage under a canopy in an uncompleted building by one Kingsley Alozie.
He said the suspects and others now at large belong to notorious kidnapping gangs who have abducted a good number of innocent citizens in the state in recent times.
The commissioner told newsmen that the uncompleted building, used by the hoodlums has been destroyed.
He stated that the command has launched a manhunt for the suspects are at large, while those arrested will be prosecuted appropriately.
One of the victims, who narrated his ordeal to newsmen said he came to Aba to fix his car, but the hoodlums intercepted his car along Aba/Port- Harcourt Express-way and whisked him away along with his brother to an unknown destination.
“I came to Aba on Thursday to put my car in order, because I was involved in an accident last week.
After discussing with the panel beater who fixed the car, I decided to pass the night with my brother who resides at Aba, but as we were driving down to his house we were intercepted by some hoodlums at gun-point,” he said. http://www.naij.com/957094-panic-imo-state-5-militants-shot-deaf-fierce-gun-battle.html
