Crime › Grandma Weeps As Oyo Policemen Snatched N150,000 House Rent From Grandson by BeeBeeOoh(op):
A woman, Taiwo Ogunade, has lamented how some men suspected to be policemen attached to the Oyo State Police Command snatched money and phone from her grandson.

Ogunade, who spoke to our correspondent amid tears on Thursday, said that the N150,000 she gave her grandson, Emmanuel Jesugbemi, to pay for her rent was taken by the officers.

She said, “I don’t like something that will make my blood pressure rise. I am fed up and I know that God will punish them.”

Her voice was drowned in a flood of tears, as she could not continue the conversation.

Her grandson, Jesugbemi, said that the incident happened in the Apata area while he was going to deposit the money in the bank.

The 20-year-old claimed that the policemen, led by one Badru Samson, waylaid the motorcyclist conveying him to the bank and ordered him to get down.

The artiste claimed that the policemen slapped him repeatedly and while at it, called him a fraudster.

Jesugbemi, who had recounted the incident in a video clip posted on his Instagram page, @official_babyjez, said that the incident happened on Wednesday.

He said, “Grandma’s house rent was due, so she went to the Apata area to collect money from somebody to join [add to] what she had for the rent. After collecting the money, she called me to meet her at Apata, where she gave me the N150,000 to deposit into our landlord’s bank account.

“I boarded a motorcycle and while on my way to deposit the money in the bank, the policemen blocked my motorcyclist with a black car with no number plate and ordered me to get down. I saw four policemen in the car when I got down and one of them slapped and kicked me. He even used his gun to hit my head and called me a Yahoo boy.

“The policemen asked for my phone and told me to unlock it; but they did not find anything [incriminating] after they checked it. They wanted to search me, but I stopped them because policemen had searched one of my friends before and in the process, they put hard drugs in his pocket. So, I willingly brought my pockets out and they saw the N150,000.”

He claimed that the policemen drove him from the Apata area to Iwo Road, where he was dropped off after he had been dispossessed of the money.

“They asked who owned it and I told them that it was for my grandma and that I was on my way to pay her house rent. The policemen said I was lying. One of them kicked my stomach and forcefully collected it from me.

“They told me to format my phone and took it; they put me inside the car and drove me from Apata to under the bridge in Iwo Road, where they dropped me off.

Politics › Nigerian Police Deny Plans To Bring Back Killer Squad, Says SARS Gone For Good. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:53pm On Oct 07, 2021
SARS was disbanded in late 2020 after the nationwide #EndSARS protest against brutality, extrajudicial killings, and human rights abuses that the SARS officers were allegedly involved in.

he Nigeria Police Force has stated that the service is not planning to revive the notorious police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, in a release said the disbanded SARS would not be revived.

SARS was disbanded in late 2020 after the nationwide #EndSARS protest against brutality, extrajudicial killings, and human rights abuses that the SARS officers were allegedly involved in.

A statement had gone viral earlier on Thursday wherein the IGP was said to have released new terms and conditions on the operation of SARS officials.

The statement had quoted Baba Usman as saying SARS has been reformed with new rules of engagement.

However, in a recent development, the police said the report was untrue and unfounded.

This was contained in a statement issued by Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer on Thursday.

According to the police boss, the SARS unit has been disbanded and can never be resurrected.

Mba said, “The Force wishes to categorically emphasise that there is no plan whatsoever to bring back the disbanded SARS. SARS is gone for good and will not resurrect under any guise whatsoever.

“The IGP notes that the Force has since reorganized its operational structure to fill the vacuum created by the disbandment of SARS.

“Currently, the leadership of the Force is focused on efforts at deepening reforms within the Police and bequeathing Nigerians a Police Force that will be more effective, efficient, technology-driven, humane and Rule of Law-compliant.”

Last October, there were massive protests in some states tagged #EndSARS, largely organised by youths, to call for an end to police brutality.

They also demanded that SARS, a police unit, notorious for human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, and other atrocities should be disbanded.

But during the protests against police brutality, the Nigeria police unleashed more terror on peaceful protesters in many parts of the country, including at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, the epicentre of the struggle.

The repressive regime of Muhammadu Buhari was thereafter forced to disband SARS.

It thereafter introduced the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, which many Nigerians described as not different from the disbanded SARS.

Politics › Bandits From Neighbouring States Terrorizing Anambra - Obiano Tells Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:49pm On Oct 07, 2021
Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, on Thursday, held a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Obiano, who updated Buhari on security challenges facing the state, said bandits from neigbouring states are responsible for the killings and disruption of public peace in Anambra.

He described the call for the declaration of state of emergency in Anambra to address security challenges in the state as “very unfortunate’’

The meeting is coming after the Federal Government threatened to invoke emergency rule as part of measures to address security challenges and safeguard electoral processes in Anambra.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federal, Abubakar Malami, had on Wednesday, warned that federal government may be forced to impose State of Emergency in Anambra to ensure peaceful conduct of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state

Speaking on Thursday, Obiano dismissed the contemplation of declaring a state of emergency in his state.

He said: “Well, that’s a very unfortunate comment by the Attorney-General, Malami – very, very unfortunate.

“I also reported that to the President and this is not in the books of the president because he knows that Anambra has been the safest state in Nigeria for seven years plus.

“These invaders from outside Anambra state, from the neighbouring towns, we are going to deal with them. We’re already working, there’s nothing.

“Even to contemplate a state of emergency is unfortunate, look at what is happening in the north; they kill dozens every day. Because less than 15 people were killed in Anambra in two weeks, is that a reason for somebody to call for a state of emergency?
“That’s a very unfortunate comment by Malami. I will call him to express reservation on those kinds of comments, he shouldn’t try that,’’ he said.

The governor said he also used the opportunity of his visit to Abuja to brief and solicit support from some security agencies towards addressing security challenges in Anambra.

“We are getting more boots on ground, we’re getting more equipment and I believe in less than two weeks all these things will be over.

“We’ll overwhelm and conquer all these miscreants that came from other states nearby to come and harass Anambra people.

“Let me stop at saying that they are from neighbouring states,’’ NAN quoted him as saying.

Politics › Conditions For Declaration Of State Of Emergency - Vanguard by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:05pm On Oct 06, 2021
FOLLOWING security threats to the November 6, 2021 Anambra State governorship election, the Federal Government, Wednesday, threatened to declare a state of emergency in the state to ensure that the poll is held.

The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the end of the virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Malami said that the government has the responsibility to sustain the democratic order and will do the needful including the declaration of a state of emergency in the state to ensure that the election holds.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday, warned that insecurity in Anambra could harm the governorship poll if not checked.

Speaking at emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security ICCES, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said: “During our last quarterly meeting held about four weeks ago on 9th September 2021, we received briefings and reviewed preparations for the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election. You may also recall that a major concern raised by members was the security situation in the State in particular and the adjoining states in general and how this might affect preparations and possibly the conduct of the election. Unfortunately, the situation has deteriorated markedly since our last meeting. Many innocent lives have been lost and property destroyed.

“From the reports we have received, the stated goal of many of the attackers is that the Governorship election scheduled for 6th November 2021 must not hold. This is worrisome for the Commission. We are deeply concerned that specific electoral facilities and materials could once more become targets of attack. Recall that in May this year, our State Office at Awka was attacked and all the non-sensitive materials assembled for the election at the time were destroyed. In addition, our store, collation centre and the main office building were either totally or substantially damaged. The Commission also lost several vehicles to be used for the election,” he stated.

Constitutional conditions for emergency

As it is, the AGF said the government is not ruling out emergency rule to save democracy in Anambra.

Can the Federal Government declare emergency rule in Anambra? Does the current security situation in Anambra sufficient for such a declaration?

The 1999 Constitution provides the ground for how a state of emergency can be declared in Section 305 empowers the president to issue the declaration by way of official gazette to be ratified by the National Assembly. The process could be initiated by a governor of a state upon a resolution of the House of Assembly.

The constitution states: 305(1) Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, the President may by instrument published in the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency in the Federation or any part thereof.

(2) The President shall immediately after the publication, transmit copies of the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation containing the proclamation including the details of the emergency to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, each of whom shall forthwith convene or arrange for a meeting of the House of which he is President or Speaker, as the case may be, to consider the situation and decide whether or not to pass a resolution approving the Proclamation.

(3) The President shall have power to issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency only when:

(a) the Federation is at war;

(b) the Federation is in imminent danger of invasion or involvement in a state of war;

(c) there is actual breakdown of public order and public safety in the Federation or any part thereof to such extent as to require extraordinary measures to restore peace and security;

(d) there is a clear and present danger of an actual breakdown of public order and public safety in the Federation or any part thereof requiring extraordinary measures to avert such danger;

(e) there is an occurrence or imminent danger, or the occurrence of any disaster or natural calamity, affecting the community or a section of the community in the Federation;

(f) there is any other public danger which clearly constitutes a threat to the existence of the Federation; or

(g) the President receives a request to do so in accordance with the provisions of subsection (4) of this section.

(4) The Governor of a state may, with the sanction of a resolution supported by two-thirds majority of the House of Assembly, request the President to issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency in the state when there is in existence within the state any of the situations specified in subsection (3) (c), (d) and (e) of this section and such situation does not extend beyond the boundaries of the state.

(5) The President shall not issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency in any case to which the provisions of subsection (4) of this section apply unless the governor of the state fails within a reasonable time to make a request to the President to issue such Proclamation.

(6) A Proclamation issued by the President under this section shall cease to have effect:

(a) if it is revoked by the President by instrument published in the Official Gazette of the government of the federation;

(b) if it affects the Federation or any part thereof and within two days when the National Assembly is in session, or within 10 days when the National Assembly is not in session, after its publication, there is no resolution supported by two-thirds majority of all the members of each House of the National Assembly approving the Proclamation;

(c) after a period of six months has elapsed since it has been in force:

Provided that the National Assembly may, before the expiration of the period of six months aforesaid, extend the period for the Proclamation of the state of emergency to remain in force from time to time for a further period of six months by resolution passed in like manner; or

(d) at any time after the approval referred to in paragraph (b) or the extension referred to in paragraph (c) of this subsection, when each House of the National Assembly revokes the Proclamation by a simple majority of all the members of each House.

Education › Bawa To Students: No Shortcut To Wealth, EFCC Will Catch You by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:31pm On Oct 06, 2021
Abdulrasheed Bawa, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman has charged Nigerian students to take ownership of the fight against corruption.

Bawa, a senior police officer, appealed to them to serve as role models by shunning all forms of cybercrime,

“There is no shortcut to wealth and fame”, he said while urging youths to embrace the virtue of hard work and contentment.

Bawa gave the advise at the Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja, the Kogi capital.

He was a guest at the flag-off of campaign against social vices on campuses organised by the National Association of Nigerians Students (NANS).

Represented by Abbah Sambo Usman, Head of EFCC Cybercrime Section, Bawa decried the rate at which youths get involved in cybercrime and blamed society.

“Everybody wants to live large and big. Our society is fond of glorifying ‘the affluent and the corrupt’. In fact, we celebrate them. Nobody is asking questions on how they come about their wealth!

“The moment you are rich you become a celebrity and people want to model their life after you. This is really sad and unfortunate! The society must stop this attitude, for our country to move forward.”

Bawa added that all hands must be on deck to defeat the menace as he admonished all students and youths to shun ostentatious and flamboyant lifestyles.

“There are laws that forbid cybercrime. The government has enacted several laws and backed them up with procedures of enforcement. The laws are going to be strictly enforced on all offenders”, Bawa vowed.

Politics › 2022 Budget: FG Will Borrow To Finance ₦6.258trn Deficit - Zainab Ahmed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:33pm On Oct 06, 2021
• FEC approves budget proposal

The federal government has disclosed that the N6.258 trillion budget deficit in the proposed 2022 Appropriation Bill will be financed through local and external loans.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who made this known on Wednesday in a chat with newsmen at the end of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja also disclosed that FEC approved the proposed 2022 Budget of N16.39 trillion.

On why the country needs to borrow despite outcry from different quarters, Mrs. Ahmed said the target to deliver many of the administration’s legacy projects would not be achievable without taking credit facilities, noting that the generated revenues are barely enough to meet recurrent expenditures.

The minister also noted that though concerns are being raised over the frequent borrowings by the administration, she allayed fears that the situation might be spinning out of control already, noting that Nigeria’s borrowings are still within healthy and sustainable limits.

She said: “If we just depend on the revenues that we get, even though our revenues have increased, the operational expenditure of government, including salaries and other overheads, is barely covered or swallowed up by the revenue.

“So, we need to borrow to be able to build these projects that will ensure that we’re able to develop on a sustainable basis.

“Nigeria’s borrowing has been of great concern and has elicited a lot of discussions, but if you look at the total size of the borrowing, it is still within healthy and sustainable limits. As at July 2021, the total borrowing is 23% of GDP.”

Politics › Buhari's Speech: Nigerian Lawmakers On Ghana's Terror Watchlist - Reps by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:23pm On Oct 05, 2021
President Buhari had in his 1 October Independence Day speech said the government is investigating financiers of the Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo.

A member of the House of Representatives, Ben Igbakpa (PDP Delta), has said the allegation by President Muhammadu Buhari that a member of the National Assembly is financing a secessionist movement has put Nigerian lawmakers on terror watch list in Ghana.

The lawmaker, who represents the Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency of Delta State, while raising a point of privilege on Tuesday, said he was detained for four hours at the airport in Ghana.

President Buhari had in his 1 October Independence Day speech said the government is investigating financiers of the Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo.

“The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, and the ongoing investigations being conducted have revealed certain high-profile financiers behind these individuals. We are vigorously pursuing these financiers including one identified as a serving member of the National Assembly,” Mr Buhari said.

Coming under order 6 rule 2 and section 17 (A) of the legislative house powers and privileges Act 2017, Mr Igbakpa narrated his ordeal in Ghana, claiming that he was informed that Nigerian lawmakers have been placed on a watchlist in Ghana.

“On Saturday, I had to honour an invitation to Ghana for a wedding. Mr speaker, it will amaze you what I faced in the hands of Ghanaian officials.

“I got there, they kept me for about four hours, and they are trying to confirm something. I stayed at the airport for four hours, missed the wedding that I went there for and at the end of the day one of them walked up to me and said sir, ‘We are sorry, because there is an announcement in Nigeria that a member of parliament is sponsoring terrorism. We are out on red alert to ensure that no member of parliament from Nigeria come here to hide or to cause trouble.”

He said the failure of Mr Buhari to name the alleged financier is placing all the 469 members of the National Assembly as prime suspects.

The lawmaker prayed that the president should name the suspected financier and prosecute him/her.

Mr Igbakpa also prayed that leaders of the House should liaise with the leadership of the Senate to meet Mr Buhari on the matter.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, did not allow debate on the matter, noting that point of privilege should not be debated.

He ruled that the House has noted the point of privilege raised.

Past link of IPOB leader to National Assembly

One lawmaker that has a link with Mr Kanu is the Minority Leader of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe.

The lawmaker was one of the three persons that stood surety for the bail granted the leader of IPOB by Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja in April 2017.

Mr Abaribe alongside the two others agreed to each stake N100 million worth of Abuja properties as security for the bail.

Mr Abaribe was reportedly detained in 2018 for the link to the IPOB leader, who was in exile after jumping bail following the invasion of his house by men of the Nigerian Army.

Mr Kanu is currently in the custody of the State Secret Service (SSS) after his extradition to Nigeria from an undisclosed country while Mr Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, is in detention in Benin Republic following his arrest in that country on his way to Germany.

There is palpable fear among security agencies in Imo State, as operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), identified as Prince Nwachinaemere Ezemuonye Ozuzu, was allegedly shot dead by an unidentified police officer.

The ugly incident, according to the deceased brother, Destiny Nwozuzu, happened on Monday around Mgbidi – Awo /Owerri Onitsha road, in Imo State.

He said the 38 year-old was shot four times by a police officer, not unknown gunmen and not once as claimed by the DSS officials.

He revealed that the father of four was shon on his right chest by a police officer on a joint taskforce team, who was trying to fire warning shots in response to the supposed gunmen alleged to be firing gunshots.

Another source who pleaded anonymity, told DAILY POST correspondent, that the deceased and his colleagues were shooting indiscriminately when a stray bullet hit the DSS officer.

DAILY POST findings showed that he was recently promoted.

Our correspondent also gathered that some youths from Irete community in Owerri West, the deceased community were planning to stage a protest to the DSS office tomorrow morning to register their grievances.

The Imo State Police command, Michael Abattamwhen when contacted said,” I don’t have such information yet. If a police officer had killed somebody we should have known by now.”

The police spokesman said, “You can go to the DSS for further confirmation my brother.”

All efforts made to reach the DSS PRO proved abortive as DAILY POST correspondent was told that Department of State Security Service does not have spokesperson at the state level.

The spokesman for the group, Saleh Alhassan, stated this during a chat with PUNCH Live on Tuesday, adding that the development was evidence that Fulani herders were never the problem.

He said that there was no more open grazing in most parts of the South-East but only cattle trading, adding that the cows being sold in the South-East mostly belong to Igbo traders.

Alhassan stated, “That nonsense you see in the South-East is a manifestation of frustration… They will continue burning their cities, killing themselves.

“Now that the herders are not there, they are still killing themselves. Sometimes they wear Fulani attires to continue to commit heinous crimes.

“Now that the herders are not there, are they having peace in the East?”

Alhassan added that the constant sit-at-home orders given by the Indigenous People of Biafra which were being violently enforced had led to the loss of cattle, hence the exit of Miyetti Allah.

“Those Biafrans are shooting and killing their animals. Those making noise in the media are cattle traders. They will not go anywhere. The cows you see there now belong to the Igbo,” he stated.

The Miyetti Allah spokesman said the group would not obey the anti-open grazing law being passed in most parts of the South because open grazing remains a way of life.

He said that the group would be suing all the states enforcing the law, adding that Miyetti Allah would also make political and spiritual steps.

“First, we take legal action; secondly, we’ll seek a political solution and then spiritual. We will invoke the wrath of God on those opposing the open grazing law,” Alhassan said.

The Miyetti Allah spokesman also denied reports that Dr. Chike Akunyili was murdered by herdsmen last week.

He argued that the blanket ban on open grazing in the South was connected to the 2023 elections and was a ploy by southern governors to force their northern counterparts to negotiate for the presidency amid the raging debate on zoning.

Alhassan, however, vowed that the group would never support the presidential ambition of any governor that is enforcing the ban on open grazing.

He said a governor like Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State who is at the forefront of enforcing the ban on open grazing should forget about getting their support.

When asked why herders are not embracing ranching, the Miyetti Allah spokesman argued that ranching was expensive and could not be done overnight.

He advised governors to set up ranches and then lease them to herders rather than ban open grazing without providing an alternative.

Politics › Anambra Guber: Operation Golden Dawn Is APC's Tool To Win Election - Ohaneze by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:32am On Oct 05, 2021
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has claimed that the newly launched” Operations Golden Dawn” in South East Nigeria, may be the All Progressives Congress, APC’s tool to edge the other political parties participating in the November 6th governorship election in Anambra State.

Ohanaeze called on the Nigerian Army to ensure that human rights violations are not part of activities in the region.

The group also called on the Federal Government and Governors in the South East to ensure that the Nigerian Army abide by the rules of engagement with high levels of professionalism based on military ethical standards.

Ohanaeze, in a statement signed by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, its Secretary-General, alleged that the action of the previous operation Python Dances was responsible for the increased violence and insecurity in the South East

“Ndigbo are foreseeing uncertainties and tensions as if there are hidden agenda attached to the newly formed Operations Golden Dawn,” the statement said.

“The military shouldn’t allow politicians to drag them into Anambra November 6th governorship elections.

“There are innuendoes that APC had craftily designed scripts for the Anambra elections including the use of the military to edge out PDP and APGA.

“Ndi Anambra should rise to the top of the game and defend their votes, as Igbos are watching how Governor Hope Uzodinma’s APC National Council for Anambra Election will attempt to use all options including the attempts to take advantage of the military troops for the election.

“There should not be a repeat of the ugliest experiences of the previous operation of Python Dance in the

South East which was characterized by intimidations, harassment of passengers and motorists, killings and dumping of corpses of suspected Biafra agitators especially IPOB members in the bushes, and unlawful incarceration of innocent people.

“We expect that there must be a human face in the operations Golden Dawn, devoid of any kind of ethnic cleansing and dishonesty”.
