This is funny I swear. So even our governor obeyed the sit-at-home?

Buhari has really killed that joy and that small peace we had before.

Politics › I've Approved Increase Of N-power Beneficiaries To A Million From 500,000-Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op):
President Muhammadu Buhari says his regime has approved an increase in N-Power beneficiaries from 500,000 to one million.

resident Muhammadu Buhari says his regime has approved an increase in N-Power beneficiaries from 500,000 to one million.

“Considering the positive impact of our Social Investment Programmes, I recently approved an increase in the number of N-Power programme beneficiaries from 500,000 to 1,000,000,” Mr Buhari announced in his Independence Day address on Friday.

On the social welfare programmes of the federal government, the president reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving its goal of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

“Out of this, 510,000 have started the programme while the competitive selection process for onboarding the outstanding 490,000 beneficiaries is in progress. The National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme is currently being implemented in 35 States of the Federation and the FCT,” he added. “Over 103,000 women have been engaged and empowered as cooks under the programme, while about 10 million pupils are being fed across public primary schools in the country.”

He added, “To grant increased access to credit to the most poor and vulnerable, I have directed an increase in the disbursement of Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme loans to an additional one million beneficiaries laying more emphasis on the smallholding farmers through the farmers Moni programme.”

Mr Buhari also pledged to address the widespread discontent and disillusion about the efficiency and probity of the nation’s civil service.

He noted that for far too long, the nation had neglected the centrality of the civil service as the engine of governance, which had manifested in ineffective service delivery.

“It is for this reason that we are refocusing the Nigerian civil service to provide world-class service to run our country,’’ said the Nigerian leader.

The president also promised to bring more youths into governance to address youth restiveness across the country.

He said the government would also continue to encourage girl-child education, female scholarship schemes, life skills, and digital literacy skills to boost girl’s enrolment, retention, and completion of schooling.

“The youths of this great country remain propellants for our today and provide guarantees that we would have a secure tomorrow. It is for this reason that I remain focused on expanding opportunities for their participation in politics and governance,” the president further explained. “Recent appointments of young people into positions of authority and their track record so far gives me confidence that we need to bring more of them into governance, and this I promise to do.”

Politics › Buhari Blames Middlemen For Hike In Food Prices, Hoading Of Commodities by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:10am On Oct 01, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari has again blamed middlemen for the hike in the prices of food items.

Buhari said middlemen are responsible for food shortages on Friday during his nationwide address to mark Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary.

The president said middlemen have created “artificial shortages” through the hoarding of essential commodities for profiteering.

Buhari said the agricultural sector remains the key to the country’s economic diversification, adding that agriculture is a consistent driver of the non-oil sector.

“The agricultural sector remains key to our economic diversification efforts as the sector has been a consistent driver of the non-oil sector contributing 22.35% and 23.78% to the overall GDP in the first and second quarter of 2021,” the president said.

“We have seen significant private sector investments in almost all areas of the agricultural value chain. And these have continued even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately, as our food production capacity has increased, food prices have been going up due to artificial shortages created by middlemen who have been buying and hoarding these essential commodities for profiteering.

“To address this, I am hereby directing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to rehabilitate the National Food Reserve Agency and also work with security agencies, the Nigerian commodity exchange, and the national assembly to find a lasting solution to these disruptive and unpatriotic hoarding activities.”

In July 2021, the president blamed middlemen for the hike in food prices and he has maintained this stance on other occasions.

Politics › Oladayo Amao: Super Tucano Aircraft Alone Can't Fight Insecurity by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:47pm On Sep 30, 2021
The Chief of Air Staff, Oladayo Amao, says it will require the collaboration of the armed forces and other security agencies to end insecurity in Nigeria.

The Chief of Air Staff, Oladayo Amao, has said the Super Tucano fighter jets recently acquired by the Force alone cannot end the country’s security challenges without the collaboration of the ground troops.

The Air Chief stated this on Wednesday in Abuja at a meeting with select editors of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had last month taken delivery of the second batch of six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from the United States.

The first batch also comprising six aircraft was delivered in July.

Before taking the delivery, the Air Force had disclosed last year that air fighters from Nigeria were already in the U.S. receiving additional training on the usage and the applications of the jets when eventually added to the fleet of combat aircraft.

The aircraft are expected to aid the fight against insecurity in the North-east and other parts of the country.

After extensive discussions with the U.S. government, President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2018 placed an order for the aircraft.

He had said the procurement would help strengthen Nigeria’s national security, as well as a timely end to the Boko Haram war.

In a letter he wrote to the National Assembly, the president said the Nigerian government transferred $469.4 million to the U.S. government for the purchase.

The matter then became a subject of controversy when the funds were released before approval by the National Assembly.

Apart from the Tucano fighter jets, Nigeria is also expecting other fighter jets from Pakistan.

Super Tucano alone not sufficient

Explaining the efficiency of the aircraft, Mr Amao, an air marshal, stated that the Super Tucano aircraft alone cannot do the fight without the ground troops.

He said the armed forces are already in collaboration to put an end to the lingering insecurity bedeviling the country.

“Yes the Super Tucanos have brought in a lot of bites to the fight and I can tell you for a fact that as we speak now, the airplanes are operating in the North-east.

Just yesterday, I had a meeting with the commander out there and the vendors who supplied us the air planes to review the operations of the aircraft and I can tell you for a fact that there is a very positive response as to the effectiveness of the operations of those airplanes in the theatre of operations.

“I also want to clarify something here that air power alone cannot win this war, it will take a collective efforts like the Chief of Defence Staff has said, the military, civil society organisations, and all other stakeholders.

“So while the Super Tucano is going to play a very prominent role, let’s not sit back and think that the Super Tucano also is going to end this war. It is not going to happen, it is going to be a collective effort,” the Air Force Chief said.

Politics › Military Justifies Air Strikes On 20 Borno Fishermen, Labels Them Terrorists by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:04pm On Sep 30, 2021
There Was No Mistake – Nigerian Military Justifies Air Strikes On 20 Borno Fishermen, Labels Them Terrorists

The Nigerian military authorities have justified the killing of 20 fishermen in Borno State.

A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet had on Sunday bombed Kwatar Daban Masara in Lake Chad, which straddles Nigeria and neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, killing the fishermen.

Bernard Onyeuko, the acting Director of Defence Media Operations, in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, said those killed were terrorists as the location was a well-known Islamic State West African Province enclave and there was an existing ban on fishing activities within the area.

He added that all necessary steps were taken by the military to ensure that the presence of the terrorists was ascertained and the strike was precise and professionally executed.

The statement reads, “For the records, it is pertinent to state that the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI on 26 September 2021, acting on credible actionable intelligence on the activities of terrorists in an identified ISWAP Camp at the said location, conducted air strikes on the target. This was after careful Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance missions revealed the activities of ISWAP elements in the location. Consequently, the intelligence gathered was processed and carefully analyzed between the period of 19 August and 23 September 2021. Persons wearing combat vests and uniforms identified as ISWAP-styled uniforms were seen within the camp.

“Furthermore, neither women nor children were noticed in or around the camp, just as no fishing activities were seen. Instead, canoes loaded with unidentified items were seen parked but not engaged in any fishing activity, an indication that they were to be ferried to another location. Having carefully ascertained that nearby civilian settlements were not in the line of fire and a precision strike would disrupt ISWAP logistics movement and neutralize them; a decision was made to conduct a strike on the ISWAP camp. Although casualty figures could not be ascertained, the strike was verified to be successful in disrupting ISWAP logistics movement and foot soldiers.

“It is important to state that the location is a well-known ISWAP enclave and there is an existing ban on fishing activities within the area. Additionally, the general area is known as a gateway for movement of logistics by ISWAP elements especially from Kirta and Wulgo locations. Therefore, the Nigerian Military wishes to state categorically that necessary steps were taken to ensure that the presence of the terrorists was ascertained and the strike was precise and professionally executed.

“The Military High Command will continue to ensure that its troops safe guard lives and properties of innocent citizens. It appreciates the general public for their continuous support and further encourages all to avail the military with credible and timely information that will facilitate our proactive engagements in the fight against terrorism.”

Politics › Gumi: You Will Be Safe With Bandits If You Develop Relationship With Them by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:41pm On Sep 30, 2021
Mr Gumi says his interaction with the bandits have been easy because he always “go(es) through the door.”

Bandits can be won over by showing them respect and understanding, says controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi.

Mr Gumi, a self-appointed mediator for the brigands that have been wreaking havoc in many northern states, says his interaction with the bandits have been easy because he always “go(es) through the door.”

“I go through the door, not the window. If you go through the door, you will go in and come back safely,” Mr Gumi said while fielding questions from students at a lecture in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Wednesday.

The Islamic cleric said if the bandits are given a listening ear, their resolve would be softened and would become more amenable to abandoning their violent ways.

A student had asked why the bandits have not kidnapped him despite his numerous visits to their den.

Mr Gumi explained thus: “When we meet them we don’t speak, we give them the microphone to speak even for one hour.

“When we first approached them we saw that they were holding their warrant ready to fire. By the time we finish our meeting, they will hand in their weapons and we will be taking pictures.”

“So this is the power of human interaction which is what we are here to study as social scientists. That is the approach,” he added.

The preacher said he has been able to gain the bandits’ sympathy because he “treats them as human beings and respects them.”

“That is the respect I give them. I say come, come and sit with me. Come and sit down. I want to hear from you. With that respect, the Fulani man, you can get him.

“So don’t be surprised, if you are nice to him, if you are ready to listen to him, if you are trying to understand his problem, if you put your legs in his own shoes, he will listen to you, you will go to the forest and return safely insha Allahu,” Mr Gumi assured.

A Niger East senator Mohammed Musa had on Wednesday suggested that Mr Gumi be summoned by security agents to explain his interactions with the bandits.

Mr Musa said all entreaties to the bandits had failed. Zamfara governor Bello Matawalle had also expressed such frustration about how the bandits are reneging on their promises and frustrating his amnesty deal with them.

Before now, president’s spokesman Femi Adesina has derided Mr Gumi, calling him bandit lover for his open alliance with the bandits who have been responsible for widespread killing, destruction and mass abduction of citizens, including schoolchildren.
