To give you a background. I'd probably be one of those "acceptable" black people white people like to talk about, you know the "non thuggish type". Highly educated, top schools, doing well, etc. etc. I've been pulled over by police at least 8 times, 3 at gun point(one time they thought my friends and I were robbery suspects and were surrounded by 3 squad cars with guns pointed at us), once standing outside my super elite high school (someone claimed I had a gun; I was 15) while waiting for my mom to pick me up and arrested once (for asking a cop for his badge number when he tried to kick me off my predominantly white campus about 10 feet from my dorm because he thought I couldn't possibly be a student there, in fact he told me I should get off campus (in this instance I was told it was my fault for asking a cop for his badge number)).
My friends and I (all very successful African/African Americans) were having a discussion yesterday about how they were going to talk to their children about being a "black male" in America. Even given their socio-economic advantages, it was even sadder to know that they would have to have these discussions with their young children. Watch the video of that "Karen's" interaction with that Harvard educated bird watcher and the "efficiency" in the words she uses to get the maximum police response. "African American", "threatening". And this is a woman who probably voted for Obama.
There is a history of systematic racism in this country that is ingrained in its DNA. There are people alive today who lived in a time when the US was segregated and thus there are still people alive who believed in segregation and taught that to their children. I assume most white people over 60 are racist, just because that is most likely what they knew or knew from their parents growing up. And that kind of indoctrination no matter how much you think you've changed doesn't go away easy.
America has a solid foundation? What is this foundation you speak of built on? The US fought a civil war largely because of slavery. The losers, the ones who wanted to own Black people, still fly their treasonous flag (confederate flag) in some statehouses today! My friend and your view, I wish you luck!
