The Electoral College was created because the founders didn't trust the uneducated populace to make good decisions in electing leaders. So, they didn't trust a direct popular vote.

But what has effectively happened is that because of the compromises of how each state gets Electors (less Populous states getting more representation), the Electoral College has effectively given less educated people (Trump supporters) more representation and the ability to elect the President of the US.
