You assume that it will eventually connect to the internet. Using an assumption that a computer will connect to the internet doesn't seem to be a robust way to program anything.

A couple years back I was rebuilding my server and needed to reinstall a piece of software that I used to use to alert me of HD temp issues. I tried to install it but when it loaded it told me the software was no longer supported and wouldn't do anything else. I knew the software still worked as I had used it on the previous server, same OS and all. I guess they had updated it and wouldn't let you reinstall the old version. But you could update from the old version. Kinda pissed as I had purchased it and it seemed shady. So, I just rolled back my system time 5 years, reinstalled using my license, made the system time current and upgraded.

So we have soft off and hard off. Hard off is when the power cord is unplugged which means you don't have that standby 3vdc when the system is soft off which is you clicking shutdown button in a Gui or pressing a dedicated button(not switch) to turn of the system, the system is still able to communicate with other system depending on how they are designed. So yes, it can still get instruction from other devices to updates its time and turn on

Wwake on Lan or WoL allows a powered down computer to be turned on remotely by a network message called a magic packet.

The network interface card remains in a low-power state, listening for this specific packet the 3vdc or 5vdc. When it's received and the MAC address matches, the net interface card signals the motherboard to power on the system.

Programs will use the system time whether it's wrong.
Again when using WOL or power on s schedule the computer uses the system time.
Some programs might require the correct date and time if they are linking to another system. For instance google search will not work if there is a time difference, about 5 minutes. You can try that.
The Master Clock will update to the correct time and date from the CMOS or from external NTP server.Then everything is all dandy. Modern MB esp MacBooks don't have that coin shaped CMOS battery,that's what bemeruca has been telling you

A cmos battery is a cheap reliable and trusted tool for retaining the settings in a pc bios.

Like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

My laptops don't have Cmos battery. My surface and HP. The macs don't have it.

Cmos battery usage does not have anything to do with the Generation of processor you are running. It is a motherboard design choice. Some manufacturers keep it there as a easy way to reset bios. Some keep it to keep pc time correct. But you don't need it. Your pc will work fine without the battery
