Bios was stored in Ram/Rom memory which is why you need a Cmos battery. They moved to flash memory. Today, bios is still used alongside EUFI.

So if you don't need the Cmos battery to retain current in the Cmos RAM since they store the settings in flash memory, what do you need the battery for?

What engineers did for some laptops was find an alternative way to provide power for the UEFI/Bios settings and for the RTC without the cmos Battery.
