No drummy, that's not what I am saying. government regulates anything that hurts consumers, the environment or people.

They are there to protect the people; they do it when they see issues.

When an AI company is building something they believe will kill us all, but instead of stopping, they continue to build it while asking the government to stop them from killing us, that does not make sense.

My point is and always has been about monopoly for the giants. They don't have to ask government to regulate, the government is already doing that.

Who do you think produce the regulations the government will impose? The AI giants, because they know all the dangers which is AI will kill us all.

That's not to say I am against government regulations. I am saying regulations fail, so instead of continuing and asking government to regulate, why not stop?

Your speeding analogy also creates another problem for your position.
People violate regulations just like your pure water lady, she violated health standards despite government regulation.

So what makes you think a regulation written on paper automatically prevents an AI laboratory from doing something dangerous behind closed doors?

How does government know?

How does government inspect the training process?

Again, NAFDAC regulates, but a woman still prepares dirty pure water. It is when it reaches the public that people will find out. By that time, some people have already consumed it.

So if AI is going to kill us and the AI companies continue to head towards that way, government regulations will not stop anything, only self regulation will.

Your pure-water example actually proves my point.

That water seller is breaking regulations that already exist.

NAFDAC can regulate, inspect and punish, and people still find a way to sell unsafe water. So regulation clearly isn't some magic switch that stops dangerous behaviour.

there's a bigger difference here.
The water seller is not standing in public saying "my product could kill everybody, please regulate my whole industry"

while opening three more factories to make even more of it.

That's the contradiction I'm pointing out with AI, and why it is irrelevant to this hysteria.

If a company genuinely believes their systems could become catastrophically dangerous, go rogue and start killing all humans like in the Terminator movie, then they already have the most powerful safety mechanism available: don't build it.

Or at least hold yourself to the same restrictions you're asking government to force on everyone else.

If a training run is too dangerous, don't run it. If a capability is too dangerous, don't release it. If a model needs heavy safety testing, test it before you deploy it. You don't need Congress to stop you from doing something you already believe could kill people.

That's my issue with the over exaggerated claim. when all the biggest companies tell us, all three of them, at once: this technology could be catastrophic, we must keep making it more powerful, and government must regulate everyone building it. Especially when those regulations cost more for small companies and open-source developers than for the giants who can easily absorb them. One should be able to question the hysteria.

The water seller is chasing naira and ignoring the law. The AI companies I'm talking about are warning us about the danger while continuing to build it themselves, and asking government to regulate the whole market around them. Those are two different things.

You pointing to one Nigerian illegally selling bad water doesn't answer that contradiction.

So how does it concern the AI discussion?
My point is, if they say AI is going to kill us, why ask the government to put a defensive mechanism on it when you can self-regulate?

Why not stop building or advancing the thing if they fear it is going to kill us all?

As I said, this is to monopolize the market for the big players and to absolve themselves of responsibility.

Pure water has nothing to do with this.
The regulations in the US will not affect China; they will continue to push. They are constantly experimenting on autonomous war machines as we speak

Saw a video today on this site of a woman basically packaging pur water in a very nasty environment and thought of all the harm she is causing people because she is more concerned about making moiney.
