Foreign AffairsU.S. Officials Suspect That Russian Hackers Broke Into Federal Agencies by Benesis(op): 2:14pm On Dec 14, 2020
The Trump administration acknowledged on Sunday that hackers acting on behalf of a foreign government — almost certainly a Russian intelligence agency, according to federal and private experts — broke into a range of key government networks, including in the Treasury and Commerce Departments, and had free access to their email systems.

Officials said a hunt was on to determine if other parts of the government had been affected by what looked to be one of the most sophisticated, and perhaps among the largest, attacks on federal systems in the past five years. Several said national security-related agencies were also targeted, though it was not clear whether the systems contained highly classified material.

The Trump administration said little in public about the hack, which suggested that while the government was worried about Russian intervention in the 2020 election, key agencies working for the administration — and unrelated to the election — were actually the subject of a sophisticated attack that they were unaware of until recent weeks.

The United States government is aware of these reports, and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation,” John Ullyot, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said in a statement. The Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity agency, whose leader was fired by President Trump last month for declaring that there had been no widespread election fraud, said in a statement that it had been called in as well.

The Commerce Department acknowledged that one of its agencies had been affected, without naming it. But it appeared to be the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which helps determine policy for internet-related issues, including setting standards and blocking imports and exports of technology that is considered a national security risk.

It was a measure of the sudden panic sweeping federal offices that the Department of Homeland Security ordered all agencies late Sunday night to shut down any use of a complex piece of network management software made by a company called SolarWinds and installed on networks belonging to government agencies and American corporations.

The order was so urgent that it gave a deadline of noon on Monday for “a completion report” confirming that the software was no longer in use.

But that was clearly too late for intrusions that have been underway for months. The malign code was entered when the hackers broke into the periodic automatic updates of the software, much like when an iPhone is updated overnight. SolarWinds has traced those intrusions back to the springtime. That means the hackers have had free rein for much of the year, though it is not clear how many email and other systems they chose to enter.

FireEye, a computer security firm that first raised the alarm about the Russian campaign after its own systems were pierced, said the so-called supply chain attack — going after outside products that are introduced into computer networks — constituted “top-tier operational tradecraft.”

The motive for the attack on the agency and the Treasury Department remains elusive, two people familiar with the matter said. One government official said it was too soon to tell how damaging the attacks were and how much material was lost, but according to several corporate officials, the attacks had been underway as early as this spring, meaning they continued undetected through months of the pandemic and the election season.

Nicholas Kristof: A behind-the-scenes look at Nicholas Kristof’s gritty journalism, as he travels around the world.

News of the breach, reported earlier by Reuters, came less than a week after the National Security Agency, which is responsible for breaking into foreign computer networks and defending the most sensitive U.S. national security systems, issued a warning that “Russian state-sponsored actors” were exploiting flaws in a system broadly used in the federal government.

At the time, the N.S.A. refused to give further details of what had prompted the urgent warning. Shortly afterward, FireEye announced that hackers working for a state had stolen some of its prized tools for finding vulnerabilities in its clients’ systems — including the federal government’s. That investigation also pointed toward the S.V.R., one of Russia’s leading intelligence agencies. It is often called Cozy Bear or A.P.T. 29, and it is known as a traditional collector of intelligence.

FireEye’s clients, including the Department of Homeland Security and intelligence agencies, hire the firm to conduct ingenious but benign hacks of their systems using the company’s large database of techniques it has seen around the world. Its “red team” tools — essentially imitating a real hacker — are used to plug security holes in networks. So the hackers who stole FireEye’s tools have added to their arsenal. But it appears that FireEye was hardly their only victim.

Me thinks that the South East always plays itself, politics is a thing if interest and not sentiment, Goodluck Jonathan lost with PDP but the south south is still not sentimentally attached to the party, they go for what pushes their interest hence, APC almost winning Bayelsa.

But in the East, the Party is termed the devils party, its termed evil, yet its the rulling party, which unlike the endearing PDP has done alot of project, there.

If PDP is not giving the South East ticket, i feel they should also spread and gain ground in APC, so that they have more option, rather than just one.

Buhari has failed no doubt, but the RunOff elections have shown that people will still vote for APC, wont it be ideal for the East to also find ways of gaining grounds there do as to enjoy both through APC or PDP or wherever the power goes in 2023

PoliticsLessons From Nazi Germany, Boko Haram North, And Edo State by Benesis(op): 11:31am On Nov 30, 2020
WHEN THE RABID DOG IS DONE EATING THE VICTIM, IT TURNS ON ITS OWNERS.

Back then when hitler started out on the Jews, most antisemitic folks were like "at last, someone has finally come up to deal with this overbearing Jewish guys that are taking over the place, I dont know or care about the Hitler guy, but I think someone needs to teach this Jewish guys some lessons.

Back in 2007-2012, when boko haram was still at infancy, churches and Christians were mostly the targets of their attacks, some northerners then were apologetic to the Boko haram people, like Germans, most were grateful that some core adherents to their faith were coming out to weed out some Christian folks that were almost spreading like wild fire in the north, the Christian government of the day, then tried to use force, but the northern elders and Muslim bodies, decried the systematic attempt of the government to attack its people, and they used their homes and towns to shield the members they could, and gave them Intel to attack and escape the government, which back then was the enemy.

Now Down South here, not up to a month and some days ago, the Nigerian Police Force was the public enemy, number 1, for obvious reasons, iPhone no be gun, but dem popo go dey hold am like exhibit, to be fresh be say u be yahoo boy, and those magas go get mind dey tell us 'i will kill you and nothing will happen "
Abeg make SARS end, make swat end, make police even end too" we cried, and we drummed support for the mobs that pounced on some scape goat policemen, we share videos of Police station in Edo state getting looted and we laughed and made fun of the guy wearing DPO's uniform, we felt that the Criminals in prisons didn't commit crimes, or at least most didn't, and we stayed back and watched criminals breaking out of prisons and escaping, our hatred for the Police force and the system was so much that we were happy at the chaos that was taking form.

But truth is, time always clears our doubts, most Germans were comfortable with Hitler turning on Jews, it was only a matter of time, before he turned on everything else.
The Northern Hegemony were complicit in feeding and hiding boko haram at its infancy when Christians were the immediate target, when the ability to speak Hausa or recite Quran could shield you from attack, however fast forward to 2020, two days ago, farmers in the north, all of whom were northerners, all of whom could speak Hausa fluently, all of whom were Muslims, all of whom could pray and recite the Quran fluently, were all surrounded and gruesomely murdered, their hands tied behind their back as they were all beheaded in cold blood, with one out of the almost 60beheaded farmers having his praying beads wrapped around his severed head.

Down south, in Uyo here thieves now operate in broad daylight, close to me, a supermarket and a filling station got robbed in the afternoon by thieves in tricycles. In Edo state where Criminals were broken out from prison, its much more worst, no where is safe, whether you are in your house, in a hotel room, in the police station, on the road, both the night and day, are dreadful moments, human corpses now compete with pure water sachets on street littering... Full busses are no longer being just robbed, everyone there gets kidnapped as well, after robbing you of everything on you, they steal you as well and in turn steal from your family and loved ones, both their joy, peace of mind and the ransoms they pay.

Lets always learn to see beyond our nose, beyond our immediate gratification, that way, we wont be too swept up with greed, envy, fear, or hate, to stand by and watch a wave, that will always come back to sweep us and our loved ones, lets learn to think dispassionately about the immediate and long term repercussions of our actions, and where the long term harm will seem go eclipse the immediate gain, as the birth of Hitler seemed greater than the antisemitism, as the daily massacre of northerners today far eclipse their immediate gratifications at seeing the spread of Christianity halted, same way the chaos and insecurity in states like Edo far eclipse the satisfaction of watching the police suffer for their brutality against us.

Most especially we need to learn to tolerate the thinkers among us, who are always there to see into the future, to urge us to think deeply about things, and not see them as the enemy of the people or those siding with our oppressors. Sometimes they are all the barriers shielding us from going full self destruct.

PoliticsFinally Biden Has Been Notified Of The Set-up Of Transition Committe by Benesis(op):
he General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden that the Trump administration is ready to begin the formal transition process, according to a letter from Administrator Emily Murphy sent Monday afternoon and obtained by CNN.

The letter is the first step the administration has taken to acknowledge President Donald Trump's defeat, more than two weeks after Biden was declared the winner in the election.

Murphy said she had not been pressured by the White House to delay the formal transition and did not make a decision "out of fear or favoritism."

"Please know that I came to my decision independently, based on the law and available facts," Murphy wrote. "I was never directly or indirectly pressured by any Executive Branch official -- including those who work at the White House or GSA -- with regard to the substance or timing of my decision. To be clear, I did not receive any direction to delay my determination."

READ: GSA letter to Biden stating that transition can formally begin

The letter marks Murphy's formal sign off on Biden's victory, a normally perfunctory process known as ascertainment. The move will allow the transition to officially begin, permitting current administration agency officials to coordinate with the incoming Biden team, and providing millions in government funding for the transition.

The Biden team has not waited for the formal transition process to begin preparing for the presidency, as Biden announced several Cabinet picks on Monday. But the delay in ascertainment meant that Biden's team was locked out from government data and could not make contact with federal agencies, nor could it spend $6.3 million in government funding now available for the transition. A Biden official said the most urgent need was for the transition to be given access to Covid-19 data and the vaccine distribution plans.

Yohannes Abraham, executive director of Biden's transition, said the start of the transition was a "needed step to begin tackling the challenges facing our nation, including getting the pandemic under control and our economy back on track."

"This final decision is a definitive administrative action to formally begin the transition process with federal agencies," Abraham said. "In the days ahead, transition officials will begin meeting with federal officials to discuss the pandemic response, have a full accounting of our national security interests and gain complete understanding of the Trump administration's efforts to hollow out government agencies."

The ascertainment letter was sent Monday after Michigan formally certified its election results earlier in the day and more Trump lawsuits were dismissed. Georgia certified its razor-thin presidential results on Friday, and Pennsylvania is nearing certification of its election results, too.

It's the latest sign that Trump's conspiracy-laden legal bid, led by Rudy Giuliani, to circumvent the outcome of the election is nearing an end. The Trump campaign's lawsuits to delay certification of the election have been dismissed in multiple states, as his legal team has failed to provide any evidence of widespread voter fraud.

But until now, Murphy had refused to move forward with the ascertainment process, despite Biden's clear victory. Murphy, a Trump political appointee, has faced intense scrutiny and political pressure from Democrats and, in recent days, Republicans calling for the start of a smooth transition. In a statement Monday, Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, said that "there is no evidence as of now of any widespread fraud or irregularities that would change the result in any state" and called on the transition process to begin.

In the letter, Murphy suggested that the ascertainment rules were vague and should be updated.

"GSA does not dictate the outcome of legal disputes and recounts, nor does it determine whether such proceedings are reasonable or justified," she wrote. "These are issues that the Constitution, federal laws, and state laws leave to the election certification process and decisions by courts of competent jurisdiction. I do not think that an agency charged with improving federal procurement and property management should place itself above the constitutionally-based election process. I strongly urge Congress to consider amendments to the Act."

Trump tweeted moments after the letter was reported, thanking Murphy for her work and affirming the decision to start the transition.

"I want to thank Emily Murphy at GSA for her steadfast dedication and loyalty to our Country. She has been harassed, threatened, and abused -- and I do not want to see this happen to her, her family, or employees of GSA. Our case STRONGLY continues, we will keep up the good fight, and I believe we will prevail!" Trump tweeted. "Nevertheless, in the best interest of our Country, I am recommending that Emily and her team do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same."

The General Services Administration informed federal departments on Monday night that it has ascertained Biden to be the winner of the presidential election, according to an email obtained by CNN.

"In accordance with the Presidential Transition Act of 1963, as amended, today, November 23, 2020, the GSA Administrator has ascertained Joseph R. Biden and Senator Kamala Harris the apparent successful candidates for the offices of President and Vice President, respectively," Mary Gilbert, the Federal Transition Coordinator, wrote in an email to federal department contacts.

A senior White House official said some staffers were initially caught off guard by the GSA letter, learning about it first from CNN. But the official said staffers will begin to cooperate with the Biden transition team, adding that they were seeking more information on next steps.

For two weeks after the election was called for Biden, Murphy was silent as the ascertainment delay dragged on, sparking public pressure from congressional Democrats and Biden himself, who warned that the delay could cost lives due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Democrats were demanding a briefing from Murphy on Tuesday to explain her decision-making, rejecting the GSA's proposal earlier Monday for her deputy to brief Congress next week. Democratic committee chairmen sent a slew of new letters to Murphy on Tuesday demanding she allow the transition to begin and warning of the consequences for failing to do so.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Foreign AffairsMichigan Election Board Votes To Certify Biden's Win by Benesis(op): 11:08pm On Nov 23, 2020
The Michigan State Board of Canvassers voted Monday to certify the state's presidential election results, a victory for President-elect Joe Biden and a major blow to President Donald Trump's withering effort to contest the results.

The two Democrats on the four-member board were joined by one of its two Republicans to vote in favor of certification. The other Republican board member abstained. NBC News has projected Biden as the winner in Michigan, where the president-elect leads Trump by over 150,000 votes.

It comes as Trump's allies and lawyers had called for state legislatures, including Michigan's, to name Trump electors in states won by President-elect Joe Biden. They have also made unfounded claims about irregularities and discrepancies in the vote tallies — singling out Wayne County, which includes Detroit and its large Black population.

Trump invited Republican state lawmakers from Michigan — state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield — to the White House last week. Critics saw it as an attempt to influence the certification process, but the lawmakers said afterward that they were not "made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan."

In a joint statement issued after their approximately two-hour visit to the White House, the Michigan lawmakers said their position that the voters are the ones who pick the state's electors was unchanged.

And you literally still believe renaissance dark age myth. Fine, "dark ages" Europe paled in comparison to alter eras but that is to be expected in a region that continued it growth from the "dark ages" without catastrophic invasions to disrupt them.

There was some intentional destruction of classical art works but much, much more was presented only by the intentional preservation work of Monks and Churches. Compare what we know of pre-dark age Europe vs pre-dark age Ancient Greece, pre-dark age Axum or pre-dark age Maurayan India and you will see the Stark difference in volume of what was preserved.

We literally have works from Aristotle, Caesar, Lucian of Samosarta and many, many other works that were preserved through dark ages Europe, while after ancient Greece went through its dark age, it libraries vanished and written language gone, when Axum went through a dark age almost all written down records of Axum went, when India went through a dark age, we basically forgot that one of its greatest Emperors, Ashoka the great, ever existed.

Without intentional and expensive work by the Church and monistaries to protect pre-christian knowledge, the same would have happened in Europe and we would barely know a thing about Rome.

Except at worst anything the Christian governments did was stop supporting Pagan schools, schools of which had stopped innovating for centuries, like name any Greek scientist that invented something or some new idea wasn't from the ancient Era, the closest we have was a Christian that gave our first recorded example of experimental methodology in knowledge (so closest ancient thing to a real scientist).

The Pagans weren't even banned in the East before they disappeared and in the West, they weren't the ones associate with any sort of "science". Like for example Charlemagne had to issue laws in the newly conquered Saxons territories to stop Witch accusations and lynchings. Is that the supposed "science" that was in opposition to Christianity?

By the time that there was any official law making Paganism illegal in Christian states in the West, was during Charlemagne's regin. Before then the worst was to be banished from the centres of power, even the first few examples of people killed by the state for exposing heretical thought were against the Church's recommendation and done under what was already considered illegal by secular authorities. (Usually accusation of using sorcery against people, which was a civil offence in the Roman court among many other peoples as well, including the Mongols and Chinese).

Or in other words, by the time that being one of your "anyone (scientist, philosophers and independent thinkers) who stood in the way" those practically didn't exist in the boundaries of Christian states and we're more subversive foreign elements.

(Although this is as much because of cumulative improvements in technology since the ancient period).

Most of these Civilizations in their ancient incarnations were worse places to live in for the average person than in their Christian incarnations. The majority of the population of Greece were slaves in Ancient times and Ancient Agricultural techniques that Egypt used were back breaking.
