Politics / PDP Suspends National Chairman, Ayu, With Immediate Effect by Benite: 7:29pm On Mar 26, 2023
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu has been suspended by the party.

The suspension of Dr. Ayu was effected by the Ward Executive of the party in Igyorov Ward of Gboko Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue state.

Addressing the media Sunday, on behalf of Kashi Philip, the Ward Chairman, the Ward Secretary Mr. Vangeryina Dooyum explained that Dr. Ayu was suspended by the Executive for alleged anti party activities.

Reading from a text signed by 12 out of the 17 member Ward Executive, the Secretary stated that the decision to suspend the National Chairman was reached after the leadership reviewed his conduct at the end of the just concluded general elections.

Flanked by the Chairman and other members, the Secretary said, “we observed with utmost dismay that, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu who is the National Chairman of the PDP worked against the success of the party in Igyorov Council Ward.

It is on record that, he has also failed to pay his Annual Subscription Fees as provided under Section 8 (9) of the constitution of the PDP 2017 (As Amended).

“Further investigation also revealed that, he did not vote during the Governorship and State Assembly Elections held on March 18, 2023.

“It was also discovered that, most of his closest allies worked for the opposition party, the All Progressive Congress, APC, and hence, the abysmal performance of the PDP in Igyorov Ward.

“In view of the foregoing, we hereby pass a Vote of No Confidence on Dr. Iyorchia Ayu and suspend him as a member of our party with immediate effect. The suspension takes effect from March 24, 2023.”

Crime / Dozens Feared Kidnapped As Boko Haram Waylays Vehicles In Kaduna by Benite: 4:01pm On Jun 01, 2022
Gunmen suspected to be members of the Ansaru and Boko Haram terror groups have reportedly kidnapped dozens of travellers in Kaduna.

They were said to have waylaid convoy of vehicles with security escorts along Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road and raze eight vehicles ablaze

An association, Birnin-Gwari Vanguards for Security and Good Governance stated the Tuesday morning attack was the fourth in series.

They alleged the terrorists had in the last four days laid siege of the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna highway, killing and kidnapping travellers.

Kaduna Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammad Jalige could not immediately confirm the incident when contacted.

He said: “I will contact the Area Commander in charge of the area and get back to you please”

In a statement confirming the Tuesday attack, Chairman of Birnin-Gwari Vanguards, Ibrahim Abubakar Nagwari said, the incident happened between Kuriga and Manini near Udawa.

According to Nagwari: “It is evidently, clear, that, unholy marriage of bandits and Ansaru ( Boko Haram) have declared a total war on our people, yet the political will by the authorities to honour their oaths of office to protect Lives and Property of our citizens remains a mirage.

“Today 31st May, 2022, terrorists along Birnin-Gwari- Kaduna highway intercepted a convoy of motorists with security escorts between Kuriga and Manini near Udawa and prey on unspecified number of people that were abducted into the bush.

“In the last four days terrorists had lay siege on motorists on Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna highway, abducting as well as killing and wounded many innocent citizens, yet our people are reduced to silence mode with no reportage of the ugly situation nor any move by the authorities to show concerned on the deteriorating security around Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna highway.

“In the sad event today, eight vehicles were set ablaze by the terrorists, while unaccounted number of innocent motorists mostly women and Children were waylaid into the bush by the terrorists for ransom.

“While politicians are engaged on their mission to clinch power comes Twenty-twenty-three, none of the gladiators seeking for elections has any agenda of emancipating our people from the bondage of terrorists and miscreants. Moreso, none of this politicians deem it fit to visit Birnin-Gwari to either see delegates, but rather called delegates to Kaduna for consultations.

“We had always appreciate efforts of security personnel in their passion to curtailed the precarious Insecurity bedeviling Birnin-Gwari general area. But, our people has reach a point of no return, hence the need for the people of Birnin-Gwari and communities along the Kaduna-Birnin-Gwari highway to halt with immediate effect traveling on this notorious highway from tomorrow till security situation improves.”

Politics / Ogboru Wins APGA Governorship Ticket In Delta by Benite: 7:25pm On May 29, 2022
CHIEF Great Ovedje Ogboru, popularly known as the ‘Peoples General’ has clinched the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Delta state as Barr George Timinimi and Peters Omaruaye clinch Senatorial seats.

Ogboru picked the ticket of the party after the affirmation vote of the primary election of the party held on May 29, 2022, at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun.

From the results collated Sunday, Ogboru polled a total of 618 with 7 voided votes from a total of 625 accredited delegates from the 270 wards of the 25 Council Areas.

Earlier, Elder Enemokwu Afamefune, Chairman 5-man State Special Electoral Panel said the choice of APGA by Ogboru was divine and at God’s time.

“The almighty God in his infinite mercy has now hearken to the yearning and desire of the masses for a subtle and better life in Delta.

“I refer to Ogboru as him who is to come to APGA and has come to liberate Deltans from political bondage.”

Afamefune declared Ogboru as the party flag bearer for the 2023 election after announcing the results and raising his hand up to a great applause from supporters.

On his part, Ogboru after his affirmation said, “I thank you for the time and patience for us to be able to do what we have done, I say I am immensely and eternally grateful.

“We have been on a long journey, well whatever have a beginning must have an ending. I want to believe that we are at the terminal stage of this journey and that what we started many years ago must come to an end.

“But we will not come to end with despair but with a shout of joy. I don’t want to go through the chequered history of what has happened in Delta State.

“Suffice me to say that we know that if there’s an election in Delta, an election so properly called in the terms of the word that we must win.

“There’s no force greater than that which you represent with which has been what we called ship of hope. We started many years ago but thank God we are at the end of it.

“Thank you for the pains you bore and thank you for keeping hope alive. Looking at your faces I see hope and I can say that never again will lightening strike twice.” He added.

Ogboru promised an all inclusive government and vowed not to pursue personal vendetta if given the mandate as doing so will be time consuming and retrogressive.

Similarly, Barr George Timinimi emerged as the APGA Delta South Senatorial District candidate in the primary election held Saturday at the former Delta Hotel, Esisi Road Warri polling 235 from a total of 249 total delegates with 14 absent in affirmation election.

Timinimi promised to be the real voice of Delta Ijaw people with strong representation and calls on his people to support him.

Also, Hon. Peters Omaruaye emerged as the APGA Delta Central Senatorial District candidate held on Saturday at Ovwian polling a total of 217 from a total of 225 with 8 void votes in an affirmative election.

Speaking, Omaruaye said that the time has come for him to liberate Delta Central District from captive hands.

He called for support for APGA in Delta State, promising to change the narrative.

Crime / Kano Explosion: Police Confirm It Was A Bomb Not Gas Cylinder by Benite: 7:47am On May 23, 2022
Kano explosion: Police confirm it’s IED, arrest 2, impound vehicle with bombs.

Kano state Police Command has confirmed that last Tuesday’s explosion that rocked Kano was from Improvised Explosive Device, IED, and not gas cylinder as earlier claimed, even as two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

This development followed an outcome of investigation by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, EOD-CBRN, and Operation Puff Ader

Also, names of the victims who died in the explosion and whose bodies were recovered and names released by the Police were Ejike Vincent (welder), Michael Adejo (chemical seller), Musa Kalla (tea seller), Christiana Abosede and Mary.

Others were Austin Dada, Madam Owoleke, Omo Ben and Bose Oladapo.
Kano State Police Command, in a statement through its Public Relations Officer, PRO, Haruna Kiyawa, informed that “preliminary investigation revealed that among the nine victims of the explosion, one of them dealt in illicit storage of toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials.

He was later identified as Michael Adejo (now late). Items recovered at the scene include five bottles of different brands of Acidic Liquid, three bags of Potassium substance, one Jeri can of mixed chemicals, six and a half cartons of Snuff (Tobacco) and five drums of Polymer (Chemical).

“Technical Investigation conducted by the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence, EOD-CBRN, revealed that the explosion is suspected to have occurred as a result of mixed Chemical / Gas reactions exposed to a source of heat, such as fire, spark or increase in pressure resulting in combustion/shock waves, creating an explosion which can have shattering effects.

“Meanwhile arrests have been made linking one of the collapsed shops with dealings in sales of illicit, toxic chemical substances and combustible materials suspected to be used for making Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs,. Evidence of purchase was also recovered. An investigation is in progress” the police stated.

In a similar development, another possible attack has been averted, as the police impounded a vehicle carrying IEDs in Kano.

“In another development, on Thursday, following an intelligence report that, a Mercedes Benz Motor Vehicle, Ash in color with suspected sophisticated IEDs was coming from Jigawa State to Kano State, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, immediately raised a crack team comprising Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defence (EOD-CBRN) and Operation Puff Adder.

At about 1630hrs of the same date, following a hot chase, the suspects abandoned the Motor Vehicle at Bubbugaje Quarters Kumbotso LGA Kano State. A technical search conducted by the team revealed that the motor vehicle was fully loaded with Improvise Explosive Device materials. Two (2) AK-47 Rifles, Four (4) AK-47 Magazines, One Thousand and Ninety-Eight (1,098) Live Ammunition, and Two (2) Pistol Magazines were also recovered. An investigation has commenced.

“The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Sama’ila Dikko, thanked the Kano State Government, the people of the State, Sister Security Agencies, Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders, Members of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Civil Liberty Organizations (CLOs) and Community Policing Stakeholders for their prayers, encouragement, continuous support and cooperation.

He urged residents to continue praying for the State, the Nation, be vigilant, and report any suspicious person(s), item(s), movement or incidences to the nearest Police Station, and not take laws into their hands. Round-the-clock visibility patrol and raids of criminal hideouts and black spots will continue throughout the State, as the command will sustain the ongoing “Operation Puff Adder” that has been yielding positive results.”

Politics / Emir Of Kano, Air Peace Row Deepens by Benite: 1:40pm On Feb 27, 2022
• Emirate gives airline 72 hours to apologise to monarch

The row between the Emir of Kano and Air Peace deepened yesterday with Isa Bayero, cousin of Aminu Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano, giving the airline a 72-hour ultimatum to offer an apology for allegedly ‘disrespecting’ the monarch and causing a delay to his flight.

Bayero had written a letter of complaint to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), seeking punitive actions against Air Peace Airline for what he tagged “disrespect to the emir and the people of Kano State.”

But Air Peace reacted, saying that it did not disrespect the Emir of Kano as alleged in the petition.

The airline’s Chief Operating Officer, Toyin Olajide, argued that Air Peace holds the Emir of Kano in the highest regards and contrary to the insinuation that the emir was disrespected, the airline indeed protected the image of the traditional ruler “by not succumbing to what Isa Bayero wanted us to do.”

In a latest development, Bayero, who is the chief protocol officer for the Emir, said: “I am giving an ultimatum of 72 hours for Air Peace to tender an apology to the emir, first in a national daily and secondly to come down in person to the emir. We would not hesitate to go extra miles to correct the ‘misnormal’.

“The action of Air Peace is sentimental and unprofessional and we can go any length to defend and protect any act of insensitivity against our prestigious traditional institution.

“That insult is not heaped on the emir alone but on the good people of Kano and folding our hands on this could trigger something worse and more ridiculous.

“I wrote to the DG NCAA, to complain but if someone claimed my statement is inciting, well, they are entitled to their opinion. But come to think of it, inciting who? Kano people not to fly Air Peace anymore because the airline insulted their emir and refused to apologise? That I have no regret if anybody claimed or interprets my complaint that way.

“After all, Air Peace has been in business before coming to Kano and Kano people have been flying across the world without Air Peace. So if that is what he wanted, so be it, we will get there.

“I am a professional pilot. I have flown five heads of state besides being a prince of Kano, and I am a personal friend to the Chairman of Air Peace, Mr Onyema.”

Crime / Hushpuppi’s Tailor: Abba Kyari Deletes Facebook Post - Gazette by Benite: 7:43am On Aug 04, 2021
The controversial July 29 update had elicited thousands of comments and inspired a flurry of biting memes on social media.

Nigeria’s disgraced police chief Abba Kyari has deleted his infamous Facebook update in which he responded to his indictment in the United States with claims that he was only rendering tailoring services to notorious fraudster Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas.

Mr Kyari took to Facebook hours after his indictment was announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on July 29, saying barely knew Hushpuppi and imploring his supporters should disregard the allegations because they contained no substance.

In the post that subsequently elicited thousands of comments and inspired a flurry of biting memes on social media, the suspended deputy police commissioner said his only connection with Hushpuppi was when the fraudster saw some traditional attires on his social media page and contacted him that he liked them.

“Nobody demanded any money from Abbas Hushpuppi and nobody collected any money from him,” Mr Kyari emphasised. “We responded to a distress call he made on threat to his family and released the Suspect when we discovered there was no life threat from the Suspect. This is the true story. Vincent is alive, he can be contacted.”

But it was soon clear that Mr Kyari was lying about his relationship with Hushpuppi and what he knew of the fraud after the syndicate’s full indictment and Mr Kyari’s arrest warrant were obtained and first published by Peoples Gazette. He still went on to circulate a statement via WhatsApp, claiming the documents published by The Gazette were fake but this time without the bit about the tailoring services he rendered to Hushpuppi.

Following police’s confirmation that the documents were genuinely from the U.S. authorities, Mr Kyari was suspended from the police and a panel was raised to probe his involvement in a cross-border scheme of wire fraud and money laundering.

At about 12:03 a.m. on August 4, Mr Kyari initially edited the Facebook post to remove the N300,000 claim and admit that he received N8 million from Hushpuppi to hold a member of their syndicate, Chibuzo Vincent, in custody for a $1.1 million cyberheist to pull through following The Gazette’s story on that affair.

By 4:01 a.m., barely four hours later, both the original post and the edits had disappeared from Mr Kyari’s page. Why the disgraced officers decided to remove the entire post after it had been seeing presumably by millions across the world was not immediately clear. He did not return a request from The Gazette seeking comments

Crime / Abba Kyari Deletes Facebook Post Mocking Police Probe Of FBI Charges by Benite: 8:18am On Jul 31, 2021
Mr Kyari has deleted a Facebook post where he described his indictment by the FBI and subsequent investigation by Nigerian police as a “show” that he is “enjoying.”

Abba Kyari, the Nigerian police commissioner recently exposed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a member of an Internet fraud syndicate, has deleted the Facebook post in which he dismissed investigation into his scandal as a joke.

On Thursday, Peoples Gazette reported that Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, the infamous Nigerian fraudster who recently pleaded guilty in the United States, narrated how he bribed Nigeria’s celebrated police chief Mr Kyari in a court document.

Amidst calls for probe of the ‘super cop’, a Facebook user on Friday accused Mr Kyari of arresting and raping Ada Ngozichukwu, a pro-Biafran agitator.

Though the allegation is yet to be verified, Mr Kyari on Friday described his indictment by the FBI as a “show” he is “enjoying, while insinuating that he is unperturbed.

“Hahahahaha This is the funniest One so far, we are enjoying the Show,” Mr Kyari said on his Facebook page Friday night.

Checks by Peoples Gazette hours later shows that Mr Kyari’s Facebook post which has been shared by over 600 persons and has garnered over 4000 comments has been pulled down after The Gazette highlighted Mr Kyari’s derision for his ongoing investigation by the police.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Ahmed on Thursday ordered a probe into Mr Kyari’s indictment by the FBI.

However, Mr Kyari without any remorseful described his indictment as a “show” he is “enjoying,” further cementing cynicism among the Nigerian public that his investigation by the Nigerian police authorities would end up as a charade.

Before now, Mr Kyari has been accused of corruption. In 2018, rights group Amnesty International accused Mr Kyari of illegally depleting assets of a suspected criminal after his team shot the man dead on the highway.

Collins Ezenwa’s wife at the time said Mr Kyari and his team withdrew money from her late husband’s bank account and pocketed millions in accommodation proceeds from his hotels.
