PRESIDENT TINUBU DISPATCHES ENVOY TO NIAMEY, URGES ROBUST DIALOGUE TO END IMPASSE
The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dispatched a delegation to Niger Republic with a mandate to expeditiously resolve the current political impasse in the country.
The action was in line with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held last weekend in Abuja.
The delegation, headed by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), left for Niamey on Thursday following a briefing by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
The former Nigerian Head of State is joined in the delegation by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray.
The President has also sent a separate delegation led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger crisis.
Briefing the two delegations, President Tinubu charged them to engage all stakeholders robustly with a view to doing whatever it takes to ensure a conclusive and amicable resolution of the situation in Niger for the purposes of African peace and development rather than a move to adopt the geopolitical positions of other nations.
“We don’t want to hold brief for anybody. Our concern is democracy and the peace of the region,” the President said.
Speaking after the meeting, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) said the delegation would meet the coup leaders in Niger to present the demands of the ECOWAS leadership.
Both leaders of the two missions expressed optimism on the outcome of the assignments.

NYSC says that corp members are part of the national defence policy of Nigeria and they can be deployed in a situation of serious war.
Corps members can be mobilised for war, says NYSC DG
Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, has said corps members are part of the national defence policy of Nigeria and can be mobilised for war if need be.
Ibrahim said this on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme yesterday while reacting to moves to scrap the NYSC scheme, which is compulsory for all Nigerians who graduate before the age of 30.
The NYSC boss said, “Corps members are on reserve. They are part of the national defence policy of this country. So, where there is serious war, our corps members are educated, they are knowledgeable and they can be trained. You see the drill and so on.
“You can imagine within the short three weeks in the orientation camps, the corps members are moulded. They are like soldiers. You see female corps members blowing the army horn, playing with the military band.
“So, if not for the knowledge, where are you going to mobilise such young Nigerians to train them quickly to put in their best for the country? So, corps members are on reserve. They are also part of the national defence policy.”
He said the NYSC is concerned about the security of corps members and that is why they had been advised not to move around at night.
Ibrahim argued that the NYSC had become more important than ever in the face of the rising calls for secession.
The NYSC boss stated that he had advised corps members not to travel outside the state or the country without the permission of the state coordinator.
He added that corps members had been urged not to travel after 6:00pm and they are free to sleep at any corpers’ lodge while travelling.
Ibrahim said corps members had played a huge role in educating children in Internally Displaced Persons’ camps.
The NYSC boss maintained that the insecurity in the country was not enough reason to scrap the scheme, adding that till date, 75 per cent of corps members are still serving in rural areas across the country.
Candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 Lagos State Gubernatorial election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (a.k.a GRV) has called for the immediate suspension of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) and the Facility Manager of the Lagos Island General Hospital following the death of Doctor Vwaere Diaso in an elevator accident which occured at the hospital, IGBERETV reports.
GRV wrote on his Twitter page;
"GRV Calls For Immediate Suspension of CMD and Facility Manager after Death of Young Doctor
In the wake of the tragic and avoidable death of a young female doctor, Vwaere Diaso, in the collapsed elevator accident which occurred today at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, it is with deep shock and disbelief that this news has been received. The tragic passing of a rising star in a profession whose adherents symbolize compassion and dedication is one incident too much to bear. May God console her family and friends during this difficult period.
In the aftermath of this disturbing event, it is disconcerting that the wife of the Lagos state governor has taken it upon herself to address the protesting doctors. While empathy is appreciated, it is crucial to question why the permanent secretary or the governor himself did not think it compulsory and necessary to show up in person at such a sensitive moment.
Lagos residents' lives must be valued highly, and there must be an unwavering commitment to a no-nonsense culture in the management of public buildings. Our collective safety is a matter of life and death, and it is not sufficient for regulators to assert their authority solely when private establishments fall short. Public institutions must also be subject to stringent safety standards and regular maintenance to prevent such devastating incidents.
The culpability of the Chief Medical Doctor and the Facility Manager cannot be overlooked in this incident. There are reliable reports that show that the management had been repeatedly warned about the faulty elevator, yet they failed to take appropriate action to rectify the situation. Their negligence has resulted in the loss of a precious life, and they must be held accountable for their inaction. Their negligence in failing to address the repeated complaints about the faulty elevator shows a grave disregard for the safety and lives of those using the facility.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that the government and healthcare authorities must prioritize the safety of citizens and medical practitioners alike. It is essential to instil a sense of responsibility and accountability at all levels of governance to ensure that such avoidable disasters never happen again. Let us unite in demanding justice for the late doctor and work towards a future where no one's life is endangered due to the negligence of those entrusted with our wellbeing."
