Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba (AIG), member representing Kontagora/Wushishi/Mariga/Mashegu constituency at the Federal House of Representatives offers N100,000 each to over 500 beneficiaries enrolled into his Agro Allied empowerment scheme.

Over 500 beneficiaries were enrolled in a 3 day agro-allied training programme on beans flour production. The beneficiaries were all selected from various Local Government Area under his Federal Constituency in Niger State.

Hon. Abdullahi (Mai Solar) rendered this financial support to the beneficiaries during his poverty alleviation initiative programme in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.

The member urge all beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to make use of the financial support being rendered to them by making use of the money to engage themselves into the bean flour production trade.

“Through empowering women and youth, we can gradually reduce the rate of unemployment in the country at the same time, and achieve individual sustainable development” he said.

While speaking to the newsmen, one Aisha Umar, a beneficiary from the beans flour production programme, thanked the member for his kind gestures.

Aisha said, the 3 day training have broaden her horizon on the knowledge of bean production, and that with the financial support rendered to her by the member, and the knowledge that she now poses, she is confident that she can start up her own beans flour business.

Most of the beneficiaries that benefited from the scheme were mainly widows.

Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba (AIG), member representing Kontagora/Wushishi/Mariga/Mashegu constituency at the Federal House of Representatives donated 50 vehicles to various religious associations under his constituency.

Hon. Abdullahi (AIG) says the donations is part of his efforts to strengthen religious ethics within his constituency in order to foster God consciousness for the purposes of peaceful co-existence.

“Providing mobility to various religious associations will help them acquire the necessary mobility that will enable them reach various communities within the constituency in order to preach and propagate the peaceful word of God to the people for a stable society”, he said.

The member also said religion play an important role in the fight against terrorism and the strive towards peaceful coexistence in the country. Religion can be used as a tool to sort a balance within the society.

Vehicles were also donated to some individuals in the community to engage in private transport business in order to empower them.

The religious association that were given vehicles include, the Chirstian Association of Nigeria (CAN), NASFAT etc.

After you submitted your acceptance letter you were supposed to be given a copy of "staff condition of service manual". In that condition of service you are expected to give atleast one month notice of your intention to resign or you pay one month salary to the Bank in case of instant resignation. In your own case, you cheated your employer in two fold. Not giving a one month notice and not paying a month salary to your employer, instead you collected another salary from your employer, these are more reasons why he will come for that money because the board will not take it lightly with the him.

Hope it is not an avenue to bring him to the hands of those that has been hunting him?

A routine tragedy passed with little fuss on Wednesday 5th October 2016 on the part of a nation numbed with tragedies. A commercial driver failed to give to policemen in a patrol truck the required two hundred Naira settlement fee. The officers , having cultivated the bohemian life out of brazen impunity, had drank excessively in a near by joint before commencing an avoidable chase of the bus.The hapless bus conductor fell down while being pursued by men of the police force, hit his chin on the ground, apparently sustaining head injuries that led to his untimely death. This incident did not elicited even a cursory mention in a nation battling with so many vices, political prodigality and socioeconomic recession.

Together with some few men and women of conscience, I traced the killer police patrol team to their station in Force CID Panti,Yaba where they were summarily arrested and detained by their superiors upon a hurriedly scribbled petition I submitted as counsel to the deceased person. But the concern for me here is the total lack of empathy and haplessness of the ordinary Nigerian to cases of abuse and rights violations. The lack of willingness to challenge wrathful men of fleeting powers, who daily play havoc with our lives. But for my hysterical and strident call for support in chasing these rogue police officers yesterday, the motley crowd gathered around the dying bus conductor merely expressed their disgust and revulsion but were prepared to let matters end there.

I noticed a bewildering sense of confusion and helplessness amongst even the supposedly educated in asserting the rights of the deceased and looking up to impunity in the eye. It was a frightening vulnerability that troubled me throughout the night. Alone and wearied from the tragedy of the day, in the privacy of my room, I was tormented by the strange phenomenon of the Nigerian police officer, the animal with a mind. I was filled with disgust as I pondered over the petty lecheries for which the snuff out human life without squabbles.I was angered at then sadistic economic and social vulnerabilities that turned our police into beast and murderous gangs.A vulnerability i know is also the product of an abusive police culture in which an individual’s ability to pay a bribe, trade on social status or call on political connections often determines whether they will be assisted or abused.

To so many Nigerians, police-induced death is a regular phenomenon. In fact, it is becoming an acceptable norm that the Nigerian Police must routinely kill citizens. That the Nigeria Police Force is a harbinger of sorrow, agony and untimely death to its citizens is a stale fact.The Nigeria police have largely failed to evolve from the ruler-supportive, repressive forces they were designed to be under Britain’s colonial rule.

History is replete with the contradiction that the Nigeria Police Force has turned to. Tales abound amongst numerous families of woes, anguish and sorrows, directly induced by men and women of that organisation that has become synonymous with murder, violence, brutality and state repression of its citizens.

Few years ago, precisely on 7 February 2014, a plain clothes policeman, Corporal Rabiu Bello attached to Kaduna State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) requested a young apprentice, Haliru Slau Agaba to buy a stick of cigarette for him. Haliru responded that he could not afford it. Corporal Bello "pulled out a pistol and pumped bullets into the young apprentice, who slumped" and died instantly. Another incident in December 2001 involved three policemen from the Central Kogi State Police Command. The party; Benhamin Oyakhire, Jimo Michael and Gershon Soba mounted an illegal road block, robbed some traders (an equivalent) of 100,000 US dollars, and set two of the traders ablaze in a brazen attempt to cover their tracks (PANA Press, 03.04.01). The P.M news reported in March of 2014 that a Lagos woman, Mrs. Iroh, while roasting plantain (a local delicacy of the poor) by the roadside was killed by the bullets from the gun of a policeman. The police merely described the incident as an accidental discharge, and nothing whatsoever was done to contact the family of Mrs. Iroh. No apology was rendered and no compensation was contemplated.

The list is endless. Unfortunately, the recurring brutality is not abating. Teeth are being gnashed and promising souls continually lost. Gbenga Oyebanji, a very promising Nigerian athlete was brutally gunned down by the police in Lagos in Sptember, just last month. On a personal note, a friend came home on a visit from the UK some few years back. His wife was against this visit but he felt that he needed to see his aged mum and other relations. I remember him telling us that he really missed Nigeria. No one knew that he had an appointment with death in Nigeria. While on this ill-fated visit, he had a cause to take his car for washing. On coming back, one thing led to the other and he was shot dead by policemen at a road block. The most painful part was that the policemen claimed to have killed an armed robber and displayed his body with foreign currency. This incident happened in Benin.

These incidents remained a grim reality of how police action can shatter the harmony of a beautiful family if organisations like the DUE PROCESS ADVOCATES (DPA) were not alive and active..DPA so far, through prompt and effective interventions, has helped mitigates the depth to which the lower classes has been brutalized.Though hampered by the time and age which ordinarily demands sentiments and reticence, DPA knows know restraints in asserting and vigorously defending the rights of its members and victims of abuse and rights violations.

For the grim truth is; Policemen perpetuate brutality and also sponsor violence. Many policemen have been implicated in armed robberies. They have equally supplied weapons to armed robbers. Notorious robbers have found comfort and solace in the arms of police officers. The dignity of this pathetic force has been so battered by elements within it that one wonders why it still exists in the first instance.

The egregious brutality and hostility of the police force in Nigeria brings into question the need for survival tactics in a no man's jungle called Nigeria. A besieged and harassed populace have no known defence against police brutality. Police kill innocent citizens and put tags of armed robbers to cover themselves. Innocent Nigerians have paid the price for crimes they never committed. Sadly enough, Nigerian judiciary to date has not been a reliable defender of the people. So, how does one survive police brutality? Is it to run, duck or jump? To date, no method has been proven effective in Nigeria. The most pertinent question remains; where then shall we run to? What then shall we do to escape the brutality of a sovereign force behaving like an occupying force? What could be done to transform the Nigeria Police Force?

The Police Service Commission, the Human Rights Commission, the federal attorney general’s office, the courts, and other state and federal officials have to take shared responsibility for making the police more accountable and more effective. The Due Process Advocates hereby call for establishment of a federal prosecutorial unit to take on cases of police corruption and violence. We need to ensure that complaints are followed up and abuse is punished in order to change this culture of impunity.

I just felt like sharing this testimony from a fellow Nigerian just to tell us that there is hope for the oppressed.

Many of you, members of DPA, may never understand this group as well as I do. But I am part of this movement in ways that will shock you when you learn the details. In 2011, I was detained by the EFCC at the their detention center in Okotie Eboh Street, Ikoyi, Lagos. While I was there, one American lawyer was brought to the cell. The moment we, the inmates, heard about him, there was something about him that is quite difficult to forget.

The lawyer's name is Emeka Ugwuonye. He was given an exclusive cell - an entire room with its own toilet and bath. It was Cell Room 101. He was a special inmate. There was something about his case that no-one really understood. Right from moment he came into the cell, he began to assist all the inmates in their cases. We all loved him and he loved us back. He was bold and daring. From detention he fought the system. There came a time when he was placed in solitary confinement. All the inmates went on strike to stop his solitary confinement. He encouraged us. He cheered us and he supported us.

My encounter with Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye was profound and quite close. I and one other inmate called Debo, were his Personal Assistants during the time we were all detention.

I was ultimately transferred to Kirikiri Prison, where I spend 4 years of my life, without trial. Even though Mr. Ugwuonye was released, as we all knew he would be released and he returned to the United States, he remained interested in my case.

My case is peculiar in all respects. I just don't want to be the one to tell my story. But I will say that I ended up in the system even though I did nothing. Mr. Ugwuonye understood that I was innocent and he was determined to exonerate me right from the moment I met him.

My problems were not just that I was falsely implicated and a commercial transaction turned into a criminal case. My main problem was that I did not understand the importance of having a good lawyer early in your case.

After I was arrested by the EFCC, I hired a lawyer who charged me 300k Naira. I thought it was simple and easy because I could afford that. My first lawyer so badly screwed up my case and the court denied me bail, which was how my trouble got worsened. I hired a second lawyer who charged me 400k. There was no progress at all. He could not face the EFCC lawyers.

Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye had retured to the United States but he kept trying to follow up on my case. All that while I was in the Kirikiri Maximum prison. From the United States, Barrister Ugwuonye decided to intervene in my case. In 2013, he hired a lawyer in Nigeria for me and he paid him with his own money. For the first time, there were signs of progress. My case began to go forward. But the delays continued and I remained in detention. Barrister Ugwuonye felt frustrated with the slow pace of progress in my case. He told me that he was planning to increase his presence in Nigeria, that because of my case, he was going to move into Nigeria sooner than he planned.

I was shocked when in 2014 Emeka Ugwuonye personally appeared in court in my case and announced to the court that he came all the way from America to Nigeria because of my case. From that day, everything changed. I was shocked. From my discussions with him during the time we were in detention together, I knew that in America he charged $400 per hour as his fees. So, how could I ever pay him?. I had been in detention for years. I had lost everything I had. It was impossible to hire a new lawyer. Yet, I asked Barriser Ugwuonye how much he was going to charge me. He smiled and told me not to bother because I could not really afford his fees. That was how he defended me in my case free of charge.

In 2015, after 4 years in prison awaiting trial, Emeka Ugwuonye got me free. And I was released to go home and meet my family for the first time. The day I left prison, I did not go straight home. Mr. Ugwuonye asked me to come over to his house in Ikoyi. When I got there, he took me in his car straight to Park & Shop on Victoria Island, Lagos and bought me a phone and personal stuff that i needed. He then told me he did it in the name of DPA. That was the first time I got to know about DPA.

Moving forward, before I was arrested in 2011, I was running a successful export business, dealign in commodes. Upon my release, I returned to the business. Because of the declining value of Naira, export business has been in boom. I resurrected my business and our first contract was worth 2 million dollars. I was happy to hire the law firm of ECULAW as our lawyers. That was my way of saying thank you to Mr. Ugwuonye for all he did for me.

Now, I am happy to have the opportunity of saying thank you to DPA for what it did for me. As I have discussed with Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye, I shall be paying 10k every month to DPA forever. More than that, I want to invite other members of DPA to join me in making monthly contribution to the group. Without the spirit of DPA, nobody would have helped me. I believe I am the first person that DPA helped. Now that I have the capacity to show appreciation, I would be glad to do so. Beyond my feeling of gratitude, I think it is important to encourage Barrister Ugwuony to continue the good work he is doing through DPA. If more people could join me in the effort, many more people facing difficulties would benefit. As little as 1000 Naira monthly, or even 500 Naira can make a whole lot of difference in getting more helpless victims out of trouble through DPA and Barrister. Emeka. I don't know the modalities, but I would hope that the DPA management would set up a platform for those of us who will be making monthly contributions to the group.

Oga the problem that most of us has is impatient that is why we prefer to ransom to the police than taking the pains of during things in the right way.

A friend of mine was accused of raping a six years old girl and was put in detention when i returned from travel and visited this friend of mine in the police station, he narrated everything to me and when i met his uncle, his uncle told me that the police demanded for #100,000 or they will take him to the state police command and from there send him to prison. I requested for the lab result from the police but they kept on dribbling me with come today come tomorrow, then i knew that the police were upto something else i immediately invited a Human right lawyer, when the "2ic to the Area Commander" saw the Lawyer, he said that the case was in the hand of the Area Commander who was out of town, the lawyer called the Area Commander, during there discussion session i overhead the Lawyer telling the Area Commander that the Area commander knew that the evidence against this my friend was blurr that he is interested in the case surprisingly, the Area commander said that he was even tired of the case that he didn't know that the boy was still in detention, that was how my guy regained his freedom.

The funniest thing was that the IPO met his uncle and was pleading with him to give them money for pure water, the Uncle just gave them 1k.

We have two categories of Nigerian police, those that started their career as a RECRUIT (these people entered with their School leaving cert or O'level Cert) and those that attended CADET or GRADUATES OF NIGERIA POLICE ACADEMY (these ones are graduates), from these you should know those that are spoiling the name of the police.
