the other trouble spots to watch out for are from the rear wheel drive components, and the multilink rear suspension. flex discs will break easily if they are of inferior quality and the driver is rough on rough roads which are everywhere in Nigeria. Centre casing rubber is also easily torn. in the multilink suspension, the linkages/arms themselves may break off, the bushings will harden with time and cause the car to bounce at the rear. rear shock absorbers are usually sturdy and rarely need replacement. the engine uses a timing chain that rarely breaks so no need to bother about that the engine may overheat occasionally, at which point you will have to check the cooling system, if the radiator and thermostat and fans are functioning to design. a gasket replacement may be required in extreme cases. No 190 is exempt from these faults, once you are aware of them. it will be unable to spring any surprises on you. some parts prices: these are estimates for foreign used good parts, OEM parts will be costlier. complete engine: 90k half engine(block and head); 50k Gearbox, clutch disc, and plate: 15k fuel injector: 10k fuel pump: 5k Radiator: 5k flex disc: 3k centre casing: 1.5k hubs cost averagely 4k each. shock absorbers cost averagely 2k each. workmanship costs are higher for any Benz model compared to counterparts of the same age. the 190 will not be fuel efficient if you drive with a heavy foot, and a tank below the 1/2 mark on the gauge. so this is what i can remember for now,the 190 remains a great little sports sedan built at a time when Engineering was prioritized above all things at the Stuttgart company. In conclusion, Happy bidding ![]() |
having mentioned the salient points above, i should sound a note of caution. These are dated cars, and can be costly to maintain, so if you're looking for a cheap car with cheap maintenance, it's better going for an old japanese model that can be easily fixed by apprentice technicians. otherwise, you may have regrets. things are bound to fail in a car over 20 years old, there's no formula to solve that other than having a little technical knowhow yourself, and having a ready, competent hand to handle the failures. so have a budget for parts, service charges, and time. it's an old car but i can assure you the prices of the spare parts are not as old as you think. i will list a few at the end. most troublesome spot with the 190e is the fuel management system, particularly the injection system, many self proclaimed Benz technicians with several years experience in Nigeria cannot rectify the fuel injection problems. that is why if you look under the engine bay, many of these cars have been converted to rough running, thirsty, weak carburetor systems. the fuel pumps, fuel filters, injector nozzles, plugs have to be in excellent shape to get the best out of the car. |

in a nutshell, that's about it about this car. what you see is what you get, a reliable, rugged, German engineered rear wheel drive, tested and trusted. Guaranteed to give many more miles without the hassles of modern electronics or automatic transmissions. Yet not without the characteristic safety ethos traditionally associated with Mercedes Benz. So if you're interested, make your offer, maybe we can come to a reasonable conclusion. Be bold and ignore the price tag I attached to the title, that is for a purpose. |
the not so good about this car: the m102 engine, though bulletproof is not original to the chassis. it is however in excellent condition, and you rarely need to add oil between services the interior fitting is starting to become loose, and so there are rough edges here and there. for e.g the door cards are notorious for coming loose at the top. i will add pictures. the open roof no longer works, and drips sometimes in heavy rain the boot has to be locked manually, no longer works with the central locking the paint and bodywork finish on the passengers side is flawed, and noticeable when observed closely upright seat control on door no longer works, so driver's seat can only move back and forth until the switch is replaced

the not so good about this car: the m102 engine, though bulletproof is not original to the chassis. it is however in excellent condition, and you rarely need to add oil between services the engine vibrates noticeably on idle when the ac is on, probably due to the compressor being a manual type originally designed for th peugeot engine. the interior fitting is starting to become loose, and so there are rough edges here and there. for e.g the door cards are notorious for coming loose at the top. i will add pictures. the open roof no longer works, and drips sometimes in heavy rain the boot has to be locked manually, no longer works with the central locking the paint and bodywork finish on the passengers side is flawed, and noticeable when observed closely. |

Excellent offering if it will suit your needs: I'll list the pros about this car quickly NB: this is not a car to wow your friends or new date with. What it it is is a car with a history of attention to detail and excellent engineering without cost cutting. 1. The seats: These are original unblemished seats on a car at least 30 years old. this says a lot about the choice of materials used in making the even the seats of the car, as well as the care it has received from its owners. you would have expected at least some wear on the driver's seat, nothing! 2. the dash, again spotless. the controls are clean and simple, the overall aura is that of understated elegance. 3. very clean steering wheel, may not need a cover, but only to preserve it. 4. the panels on the chasis are clean and the paint job is fair particularly if you favour dark colours. chrome on chasis is not chipped. 5. tyres and alloy rims in good condition. for this sort of interior and chasis, i'll place a bet on the engine being in superb condition. finally i think this is the cleanest example of the w123 in the country, and if we had an equivalent of the Concurs here, it would be a clear winner. a vintage rear wheel driven engineering masterpiece! this car will be sold with reluctance and bought for love. ps: if you have or see a cleaner w123, you can maybe post an image here for comparison. |
happy sales mr cityhood. this your honda wants to die from cleanness. ![]() |
lol, another one confesses about these v6 hondas we have been shouting out to. pls get this car in good condition, and test drive it to the limit on a good road before you make any judgement about it. these cars are a secret, being daily drivers. when you drive them, you get this feeling like they can't be improved; the torque, the power, the steering, the automatic gearshifts, the way the engine carries the weight of the car, the interior, the way the seats support you, the suspension, and it still looks like a regular sedan. well done honda, that was a hit no doubt!!! |

Denn:whistles! just looking at this restoration again, Denn. Just epic. i know money died(or maybe lived) here, i won't even bother to ask what it cost, tint, tint permit, chrome finishing. it must be an experience every single time you get inside.
|
autofreak1:lol i know all about that image. it does tell a lot. restorations can be mad expensive even more than buying cleaner cars, many times only love would keep u going. so she had better take else it goes to her main rival. |
hi Auhanson, been looking for you everywhere. Pls can I get your contact details. I need to ask you a question. I'm on whatsapp 08038717534. Thanks. |

pls add my no to the mb whatsapp grp. 08038717534 thanks. Or refer me to the person moderating. |
lukaino:lol, these engines are bullet proof and will run on almost any blend of oil. the choosy engines are the newer engines and they specify mobil one in the manuals and engine bay even. you can ask the service station what they recommend for your particular model i.e w124 with i guess over 100 000km. i use the same engine, and i use the regular 10w-40 from mobil or forte oil. good luck. |
pls I need a NEW ac compressor for the m102 mb engine(v boot/190). I am on my 3rd used compressor within a year. They work first, then they start leaking after about 2 months, the present one requires gasing every month. So I figured I should get a new one. If anyone has one for sale contact me on 08038717534 whatsapp only. Thanks. |
cne010:yep, they do it for 1500 bucks, I found another place at mokola where they offer the same service for 500naira; means they have seen me for the last time. |
loved w201 getting computerized alignment in Ibadan.

Infomizer:na crazeman be dat. crazeman! now seriously, i would love to drive that car, knowing the amount of love that has gone into it. |
