Now jokes apart, this is really serious. I’m writing to complain about the absence of a car race track in Nigeria. Just one in the whole country, I’m yet to hear of. Giant of Africa, 150 million people with racing enthusiasts frustrated around the country, endangering road users by manifesting their instincts on inter state roads, cmon, we can do better. Try to understand my rant though, I am happiest when I’m pushing a motor to its limit, reading its performance characteristics and listening to its note: is it low end torquey but flattening at the top, is it lethargic at take off while screaming at higher revs, or is the curve a steep one that keeps demanding for more keeping you wondering if you will get to the limit quite alive? And I believe I am not alone. There are many enthusiasts that have been frustrated by the lack of race tracks to really stretch their engines in this country, even if just once. Many cars are depressed on our roads, you will hear them complaining if you listen. The other day I saw a white Ferrari making noise on lekki epe expressway, it was in a hold up, I truly felt sorry for the motor, another time it was a Mustang, also in a hold up. I was quite sad to be honest. Those and many motors wasting away in our great country. So I am using this medium to appeal to well meaning Nigerians who have the wherewithal to do something. I know we can do this. I have seen collectors of sports cars in our country, I know Kola Aluko is a professional race car driver. It’s about time we started, India is already hosting F1 events. We don’t have to build a track from scratch, we can use say an abandoned air strip like top gear does, and have professional track builders and designers assess it. It won’t be just a futile past time, the opportunities are quite much. Users would pay a fee, there would be side attractions: food, games, car shows, car and spare part sales etc. Families could come for a weekend hangout, it would also be a networking ground for the socially inclined, and much more. Please let’s see how we can make this happen, I know we can. It doesn’t have to be Lagos, we could use some sleepy town without so much vehicle traffic. However, I should not fail to mention that there would be attendant risks as racing is always risky, these would however be minimized by pre emptive measures like realistic speed limits, competence checks on drivers, vehicle condition checks. Offenders could face expulsion or pay heavy fines. Properly trained medics and paramedics would be at events, a working ambulance would be ready, neurosurgeons, orthopedic, and general surgeons should be a safe distance away. Like in Spain, at the bull fights, when the fighters are gored, specialist surgeons are outside the ring, who are experienced in treating gore wounds. I know we can pull this off. So what do you guys think. Comments, contributions, criticisms are welcome. |
micklplus:true talk I guess, many owners of the 4 cyl spec would swear by their cars, they are usually completely satisfied by it. Even some enthusiasts recommend driving the 4 cyl first before making a decision. I guess one has to drive both cars to really know. I haven't driven the 4 cyl before though, but the 6cyl has disc brakes front and rear, while the other has rear drum brakes, 240hp against 160hp also seems quite much when driving at extreme speeds, my bet is the 4cyl engine would be wailing by then. Both are excellent cars still. |
EOD Euro spec (my personal preference).

Though I am a benz man and will always remain a benz man because benzes last forever, I have been intrigued by the 2002 - 2007 accord popularly called end of discussion in Naija. The eod came with a radically different engine and chasis from its predecessor. Regular 2.4l 4cyl made 160hp fair enough, but the v6 was the enthusiast's reference spec making an impressive 240hp, and 287nm torque @5000rpm. For its price I honestly believe this is one of the best cars on the road today. The car has something of everything. It has elegant lines, and is appropriately sized inside and outside, the chasis also seems to hold up well with time. The cream of the matter is however on its driving, thumbs up to the engineers at honda for this engine. I'm yet to see another 6cyl engine give 240hp stock, acceleration is instant and smooth, this car seems to accelerate when you think it has peaked, and you start wondering just how many gears are in there. The car tends to idle impatiently when you sit inside it, the 6cylinders waiting to fire fully as you depress the throttle. The ride is comfortable to the point of luxury, steering is precise and weighted. The car was very stable at speeds of up to 140km/hr. Yet the suspension is taut and sporty and it takes the hard big bumps of our naija roads well. Torque steer is almost imperceptible and you almost forget you are driving a front wheeled car. Even the interior is up to standard and materials used seem to be of very high quality. Now I have driven a couple of more recent cars: sedans and SUVs, but overall to score chasis, engine characteristics, steering, and braking and of course price and fuel economy, I would call this the best all round car I have driven yet, and I hear the coupe is even quicker. So that sums up my impression of the eod. Even though for some curious reason unknown to myself, I don't see myself buying this car, I show proper respect when it passes me on the highway or otherwise. I would love for owners of the eod to tell of their firsthand experiences with this car, the good, and the bad.

Nothing to remember about this car really, as there are many examples still on the road. Mercedes Benz 190/190e produced for about a decade from the early 80s to early 90s. Chasis designation w201, with the m102 engine. About 2 million examples produced at close of production. First small sports sedan for the benz company. First car to use light weight high strength steel in manufacture of its chasis, also first with the multi link rear suspension. Base model was 1.8 carburreted engine, top of range: the cosworth designed 2.5 16v evolution II models. Many 190e forum are still active online, mostly European members, a few members from the Phillipines. A clean example from Cotonou today will still set you back in the region of 500k, the evolution models can be purchased from online sales sites, they are mostly unaffordable. |
there u go, 2.5 16v chasis only. Engine is however a w124 m102 engine from the v boot, call it a sheep in wolf's clothing if u will.

wow, would really love to see a 16v 190e in pristine condition. That would be an experience, those cars sell for about 8000 pounds on the average now, if they are low mileage. I believe they a truly special cars, even with today's tech advancement, you would hardly get a 4 cylinder car pushing on 200hp, with a sub 8s 100km time. and yet it was not a turbo charged engine, and it did not have a supercharger like the kompressors. Cosworth really knew what they were about. I actually bought a 16v here in Nigeria, that was imported by the original owner from Germany. however it had been raped when I got it, those that handled the sale didn't even know about the getrag gear with the lower left 1st gear. Still it could humiliate many fancy new model sedans on the highway. It was however using a lot of oil, and fuel economy was also high. I had to scrap the engine after it got permanently damaged by our guys here during a rebuild. Still, if I see a clean 16v engine, I would snap it up quickly, and place it back in the lonely chasis of the 16v. helluva car, that car. Not like some famous Japanese sport badged sedan, only with sports body kit, making less than 140hp, comedians. |
take time to read patiently. I made the first post. Clearly from the white commercial cabs and buses, you can tell it is Ibadan, or Oyo state at least. The poster of the other pictures is not the op. He posted pictures from Edo state. The orange Lada in the picture is not rickety. It's only an ancient car, the owner can actually be commended for keeping a relic on the road. kapish? |
I was just wondering how in my travel across cities, rustic or urban, in our great country, I never came across deadbeat cars like I saw in Ibadan the Oyo state capital. though without doubt a cosmopolitan city with an abundance of structural historical relics, the state of some contraptions of rust and steel plying the roads of the city is nothing short of bewildering amusement. I mean cars of the same age that would be regular daily drivers in other cities would be totally ragged out on the roads of Ibadan. is it the state government, the quantity of vehicles on the road, the people's vehicle and road use manners, or the vehicles themselves, or are the vehicles just resonating with the rustic quality of the city as a whole? I really can't tell. to look at the commercial buses is another story to tell. Ibadan, running splash of rust and gold — flung and scattered among the seven hills like broken china in the sun. J.P Clark-Bekederemo attached pictures are examples of the subject matter. photos 6/6/15.

really? but i doubt if it was truly a 16v 190e. they are rare for one, and any examples left in Naija would have been raped by now. my guess is it's a body kit for 16v with a capable engine, say 2.6 m102, or an m104 engine. |
