OP, sorry you are just an ATM machine to this girl. I wonder when working class dudes will stop dating these students. What do you even discuss with them? You talk about work pressure and targets they talk about handouts, sorting and departmental parties. I guess all this is in a bid to date a girl that won't put you under pressure till you decide to get married but students are well known to pressure for marriage especially when their friends start getting married. Most of you who date students rest assured that a good number of them have their student boyfriends who understand their lingo and with whom they share your largesse. Why don't you find a nice working class girl who understands what life is and would appreciate you? Just my tuppence. Goodluck with whatever you decide to do with her. |
A female colleague just told me of another caper that ladies pull. When you force them to give you their bb pin and inist that they confirm your request there and then, they gladly do that only to delete you sharpish once your back is turned ![]() When dude gets home and decides to "ping" his new target, even google can't help him in fishing her out among his contact list. |
Akpaamu: You do not cast your pearls to swines; so as a christian, it doesnt make sense discussing my fathers General(Creflo) with unbelievers, they will never understand, you unbes should go to ur clubs, drink and smoke hemp then come back and write bullshit. Creflo you re a General in Gods Army, Elshadai will be with you in all your ways. Amen! For someone who claims to be a Christian, your username doesn't exactly sound so Christian |
Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH): This is a capital market theory that the market is "informationally" efficient thus making it impossible to "beat" the market. This theory posits that the price of stocks or other publicly traded instruments reflect all the information on those instruments at that particular time. In order words, no investor can possibly steal a march on the market. There are three strands of this theory: The Weak EMH: The price of the traded instruments reflects all the past publicly available information on the instruments. The Semi-Strong EMH: The price of the traded instruments reflects all the past publicly available information on the instrument and that the market is so dynamic as to promptly impound any fresh information out there in the price of the instrument. The Strong EMH: The price of the traded instruments reflect the past, current and any hidden or insider information on the instruments. For my part, I disagree completely with the Strong EMH, to an extent with the Semi-Strong EMH but I generally agree with the Weak EMH. |
Thanks Deenee for this thread. It is a pity it has not got the followership it deserves but let's see if we can change that: Information asymmetry: This is the condition where the same information is not available to all the parties thereby resulting in one party not being able to make better decisions. Where there is information asymmetry, the party with the information is placed in a better position. Information asymmetry makes the market imperfect. For instance, I intend buying a fairly used car. The seller has touted the car's mileage and other features as first grade. I see the seller as being a snake oilskin salesman and I am afraid he may be trying to sell me a lemon. The seller is in a superior position to know about the car than I am. Thus exists information asymmetry between the seller and I. There are ways of tackling information asymmetry such as due diligence, earn-outs, reps and warranties, etc. |
Nice thread OP. I have been involved in a few PE transactions here in Nigeria though I don't work for any of the PE firms. I know many people who are really interested in PE but the amount of funds involved are quite forbidding. There are lots of opportunities in our economy that are crying out for PE investments. Inasmuch as one really needs huge cash outlay to start a PE outfit, I think that one can always start small. Pool funds with like-minded friends and focus on low-risk/high-yield investments. Yea, such investment opportunities really do exist. Then focus on ploughing back the profits into the Funds and growing it gradually. Easier said than done by the way. Anyone here know where ECP's offices are in Lagos? |
Thanks Op for the topic. My challenges are: 1. My health-long story 2. Wanting to do so many things at the same time. Smh. Life is so challenging but I guess that's what makes it life. |
Interesting topic indeed. I could save upto 40% of my pay but I can't do so at the moment because I have some loan repayments to tackle. I should clear the huge one by the first quarter of next year. In other words, the savings I have at the moment are not really savings as it is strictly for my debts. Once am done, I will start saving up again. For people on meagre pay, it is not really easy to save especially when your income is X and your expenses are Y. Mark you, these expenses may not really be the direct expenses of the low income earner. Most of the expenses might actually come from fulfilling the economy of affection such as paying school fees for siblings, giving money to relations in need etc. |
It is a damned shame what goes on in this country. I happened to be working in a Nigerian commercial bank that was one of the lenders that financed these Dana planes. Another friend of mine was part of the lawyers that worked on the documentation of the financing. These Dana planes are 22 years old! The engines are refurbished and we raised these issues during the transaction but nobody listened. Everyone was eager to close the transaction and move on. On a related note, a friend who lost the mum in the Sosoliso crash informed me that the compensation has not been paid because the airline was not insured!! It is against policy to fly an uninsured aircraft but someone in the NCAA approved that Sosoliso airline to fly without full insurance coverage. I am so livid I can't even eat. |

Interesting topic. Most ladies would lay off make-ups if they knew how fine they look without them. I have tried to tell most of my female friends that they look better without the war paints but they would not listen. Don't get me wrong,I am not against the good ole powder but the whole using your face to learn bricklaying in the name of make-up is just one huge turn off. At the end of the day I guess it is whatever floats one's boat. |
Interesting topic this ![]() I had a crush the size of watermelon on my form mistress who also doubled as my Agric teacher from Jss2 to SS3. In fact all the boys in my class had the crush on the lady (In hindsight I realise now that she could not have been more than 22 years back in my Jss 2). The crush was so much that some of the boys after we left junior secondary class schemed to get into the first senior secondary class that the form mistress would be in charge of because she would have to handle that class till the final year. Needless to say, I was one of the "fortunate" ones who got into that senior class. . Don't judge me, I prayed about it ![]() Till date when some of the old boys from my class meet, we cannot help but laugh at ourselves over the issue. |
moHot: whatever floats your boat mehn!!! the only thing you owe yourself in this life is happiness and if being single is gonna make you achieve that please remain single. And for those who think they can't be completely happy without having to get hooked then please try and do that ASAP!!!WORD! |
Inked_Nerd:Same here! xoxo! Leaving the office now. Your hex worked! He was still in but has waddled off now ![]() |
Inked_Nerd:Which of the mamas now? Big one or small mama? Will call you now so we don't derail the thread. ![]() |
Inked_Nerd:Akuko! No be you again. So you just dey for NL all day long. Nne wish we could swap places o! |
Inked_Nerd: Beowulf!!!LOL! Inked Nerd! What are you doing here by this time? Shouldn't you be in class or something? You won't believe am still at work. Will call you briefly in a second. ![]() |
It is rather unfortunate that most people on here chose to knock the OP unnecessarily. Is it so difficult to disagree with someone without getting abusive? The last time I checked it was not a sin nor was it unlawful to remain single. It is a serious fallacy to think that marriage confers one with a sense of responsibility or responsibility in itself. I know lots of married folks (male and female) who are the most irresponsible persons I know and many single fellows who have more sense of responsibility in their index fingers than most married persons have in their entire anatomy. Choosing to remain single cannot be an indication of selfishness at all. It is with due respect a very asinine line of reasoning. Being single and getting married like everything in life have their merits and demerits. None is qualitatively superior to the other. It is all swings and roundabouts as per what works for each individual. Marriage does not place you on a moral high ground over singelhood any more than singlehood does over marriage. Personally, I have had many reasons in life to entertain a life of singlehood and at the same time seen enough to decide to take a stab at marriage eventually when the time is right. Whichever status I eventually choose, I will never adopt a false sense of moral superiority over any person that chooses an opposite status. Rant over! |
Ije awele Ikemba! |
Adieu Odogwu. God guide you on this eternal journey nwadiana na Atani! We will not forget all you did for us. |
ChinenyeN:ChinenyeN i think the answer is in the positive. Was Peacock Band led by Enyinaya Abaribe not a highlife band? Just off the top of my head. |
odumchi:Odumchi, where in New York are you exactly? I used to live in upper Manhattan before I returned home. I am glad there are young folks listening to all these songs. This is how posterity thrives. I thank God for my parents who played all these "old school" songs around us. We really learnt a lot from these songs-not most of these modern music that is all noise and bereft of content |
Wesley, Pazienza and ChinenyeN, you guys are making my eyes well up with tears discussing these highlife legends! Ali Chukwuma, the philosophical bent of his songs make me love him to bits! Maybe because I am melancholic. My brother and I are so crazy about Ali Chukwuma that we would call each other on the phone and play any new Ali Chukwuma's song we hear to each other. My brother and I are always buying up Ali's CDs. God bless those who has transmitted them into CDs. I am in my late twenties and people laugh at me that I am so old school and should not have been born in this generation. LOL. Do you know that Ali Chukwuma sang a tribute to Celestine Ukwu? I have the song on my BB. You should listen to that song-I promise you you will cry. Is it me or is the Delta Igbo dialect good for making sorrowful songs? Celestine Ukwu, what can I say about this great man? Songs like "Chekwube Olisa" "uso ndu" "onwunwa abia" keep me grounded and always conscious of my mortality. He was the most philosophical of his contemporaries. His "igede" remains a masterpiece. Enyinnaya Abaribe and Peacocks band, God bless them for giving us eternal tracks like "Igbuolam obieze" "nwanne aga alunu nwane alu" "uba bu uwa". That Imo/Abia dialect of theirs did eternal justice to these tracks and ma. Charles Iwegbue, another great musician with his tribute to Patrice Lumumba. His "ejelunor", "salim ye" are nice gems. Ofege, Wrinker's Experience should also be commended. Afam Ogbuotobo, Ozoemena Nsugbue, Okonkwo Asa 77, Okonkwo Adibe, Paulson Kalu, Ikenga superstars are all very worthy of mention. I could go on and on but let me stop here for now. Didn't know there are so many kindred spirits like you out there |
wesley80:Thank you my brother. I didn't know that Obidi has derailed. Nawa o! It surprises me that few people spare a thought for Ali nwa Chukwuma like you said. Even Benson Idonije who always extols the virtues of Nigerian highlife musicians of old never mentions Ali. Anytime I listen to Ali Chukwuma he brings tears to my ears. Songs like "Onye ilom egbunam kam bie enu" "Alili egbugo nwa mgbeyi" 'Onye ga ekwu nwa mgbeyi onua" "Onwu Everest Oguchi" are really philosophical songs. Celestine Ukwu is seen as the quintessential Ibo highlife philosopher but to me, Ali was not too far off. I must also mention Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson. I know he was Kalabari but he had some nice songs in Ibo too like "Adure" "Ewu na ebe akwa" (which sadly was misunderstood by the North during the crises of 1966) |
@ Poster: I do not think the state of Ibo highlife is as bad as you depict it. If you really want to appreciate the current state of Ibo high life you have to go beyond the South Eastern states and look at the Ibo speaking areas of Delta. For instance, Ogbogu Okonji from Ogwashi is a very well known Ibo highlife musician. Obidi Chukwuma, the son of the legendary Ali Chukwuma from Aboh (though with an Ogbaru heritage) is another one. I will recommend Ogbogu's album titled "Ndi Uka" and Obidi's album titled "Ndi odi osiso" to you. Chijioke Osadebe, Osadebe's son is equally pulling his weight. Ikem Mazeli from Onitsha comes in for honorable mention. Another fellow is Onye Nze with the track "ndi no na ofe". Admitted, the state of Ibo highlife could be better but all hope is not lost. The real issue I have with the current crop of Ibo highlife artists is the excessive use of western instruments in their music. Very few of them make sufficient use of the flutes, the gongs and the drums which are our traditional instruments. Back in the days, people like Osadebe, Celestine Ukwu, Paulson Kalu, Zeal Onyia, Charles Iwegbue, Enyinnia Abaribe, Ejeagha all used western instruments but not at the detriment of our local instruments. |
Interesting thread! My tuppence! So I got part funding from my school, made up some part of the tuition and got the rest from a good Samaritan in my church. It was very hard I tell you. If you are in the Upper Manhattan area where my school is, there are always lots of free food around both on campus and off campus. For those of you who are Christians, join a church. There is always food every Sunday and at every other meetings. Like others have said, make sure you make friends from diverse backgrounds not limited to African students. I am still very tight with most of the friends I made in school. The thing is that they are always ready to invite you to visit their countries but will decline your invitation to visit Naija. Can't say I blame them because of Boko boys and so on. Anyways, for the guys haircuts can be quite expensive especially if yours grew very fast like mine. Initially I carried afro to conserve the $20 I paid on haircuts in Harlem and later on I found that there was a free haircut every Monday and Tuesdays at a church on Claremont Avenue. So try and carry Afro and make it look deliberate. That way no one will know you are too broke for a haircut. In the alternative keep your eyes peeled, you might stumble into a freebie. When it comes to shopping, I will advise that you utilise online shopping. I found that stuffs are cheaper online and you can always return them for free! Especially if you shopped at Walmart In fact, I used to save money this way. I would buy stuffs and use them sparingly, when "owu" hits me, i will repackage it and send it off to good ole Wlamart and get my refund (Don't blame me, I had to survive!)The crunch comes when you are done with studies in the States as an international student. Of course, you should apply for an OPT but you should be careful not to spend your entire OPT period job hunting because you will have a huge lacuna in your CV if you fail to get a job during this year. As you look for a job in the US make sure that you also look the way of Nigeria (inasmuch as this may be met by a "tufiakwa!" by some). If fortune smiles on you and you get a job that will file you a H1B, great! if not, do not be discouraged to head back home. However, try as much as possible to secure a job in Nigeria from the US before heading home. This is because your bargaining power is higher if you are negotiating from overseas. If you come back without a job and start to hunt then, the lowball offers you get may make you cry! Goodluck! |
This post is so spot on! I am so sick and tired of ladies just taking brothers for a ride by giving all these lame gifts whilst expecting heaven and earth in return. The rule is an eye for an eye. The quality of the things some of these ladies buy is even suspect. You were the socks one and its starts pulling thread like nothing-you wash the singlet once and the neck sags to your tummy. Feels so good to be heartfree at this time of the year. I am gladly a spectator. I can't wait for the Valentine lovers to start the amusement going. |
~Killz~:Then we go with your pop template ![]() |
Una no go kill person for NL o!!!! ![]() Dude, Killz and co have said it all but I think Hardbody's advice is foolproof. I will just add that in order not too lose out totally, adjust Hardbody's advice a wee bit. Pick out the one from your area you want to spend time with and discharge the other two with Hardbody's template. Make sure you come back around 6pm so that none of them will pay you a surprise visit. Besides on Valentine's day, any babe wey neva see im bobo by 6pm already knows the guy has done a no-show |
So it was a rude shock recently when we were informed in the office that the new Personal Income Tax Act has been signed into Law and that we would have to pay more tax. I must readily add that I am no tax expert but what I know is that my income has been seriously affected by this new tax regime. Folks at work are not finding it funny at all. So I would like to know if anyone out there is similarly affected. If it is possible, any poster with good tax knowledge on here could help us break down this new Personal Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2011 so we can all get the gist. Thanks. |
