Tupac AMARU Shakur!! Makevelli the Don!!! Mehn I love Tupac for life! This dude had the biggest impact on my life next to my mother. If a genie gave me 3 wishes, I will ask for my mum to come back and Tupac. I know every of Pac's songs and everything there's to know about Pac. I find myself on YouTube scouring for Pac's footages and the funny thing is that I am not alone in this. Tupac is simply timeless. Many times I imagine how that night could have turned different and he lived. Rest in Peace Pac big hommie! You were the elder brother I never had. Until the End of Time. 1 Like

Religion / Re: The Most Important Lesson From The Alarming Surge of Pastors' Rape Cases by Beowulf(m): 12:24pm On Jun 30, 2019 |
Reading all these, I decided to skip church today to really introspect on my Christianity. I am getting to the stage where I will forego the "assembly of the brethren" and worship God in the confines of my room with my Bible. The exhortation not to forget the "assembly of the brethren" was just that, an exhortation. It is not a principle of Christian virtue. I already have many Christian friends who don't go to church anymore. The Christian churchgoers are no more Christian than these friends of mine. My tuppence 2 Likes |
Religion / Re: Rape Allegation: Nigerians Protest At COZA Church (Live Updates) by Beowulf(m): 12:09pm On Jun 30, 2019 |
To be honest with you, this matter is super complicated. I understand the plea for evidence, but at the same time, the lack of evidence does not mean that something did not happen. Even in courts, you can be convicted by circumstantial evidence and what is called similar facts evidence. I believe there really is no smoke without fire. One thing is clear in my mind, the Pastor sleeps with his members. It may be termed consensual but in law, a higher level of consent is required if you are in a fiduciary relationship with someone. The law imposes a higher threshold for those who are in a position of trust over other people, such that those other people's judgment may become impaired due to this relationship. This class of relationship include lawyers and their clients, parents and their children, pastors/clergy and their congregation, bankers and their customers, etc. To the case in point, he may not have "raped" Bukola in that sense of the word, but he diminished her capacity to resist by reason of the fiduciary relationship I have alluded to. Her judgment was impaired and he exploited his position of trust. That, the law does not forgive and is severely punishable. Furthermore, if it happened at age 17, that may qualify as rape under Nigerian law. I am not sure what the statutory age of sexual consent is in Nigeria, or even if we have one. Finally, victims of sexual abuse find it very hard to open up for many reasons. Since this story broke, many people have told me their hidden stories: even people close to me. These sexual abuses were by people close to the family. In most cases, the family covered it out of shame, or because they derive a particular benefit from the abuser and do not want to lose that benefit. Hence, they sacrifice the mental health of their kids on the economic grounds. I even now remember vividly when I was seven how a househelp took me behind the house and did things. Many of my male friends have similar or even more graphic stories. Even the legendary Tupac Shakur once rapped "My uncle used to touch me as a kid, I never told you (referring to his mum) that, scared of what you might do, I couldn't hold you back, I kept it deep inside, I done let it fuel my anger". Think of that for a moment. That single line encapsulates in a nutshell, most of the reasons why victims of sexual abuse almost never speak up either forever or at the time it occurred. post=75584721: I love the distinction you have made here. In this country we are used to demonizing entire groups because we disagree with some elements in those groups. As an Igbo man, do I have an issue with Nigeria? Yes. Do I believe Nigeria needs fixing? Yes. Do I prefer a fixed Nigeria to a balkanized country? Yes, I do! Fix Nigeria and all the clamour for split will disappear. |

For me, I make sure I end the call while I am in mid sentence. By mid sentence, I mean when I am saying something important. That way the other person wouldn't believe I ended the call. Why should I end the call while I am still speaking? Once I end the call. I go on flight mode for a bit. Works for me all the time. |

Career / Re: How Lucrative Is The Legal Profession? by Beowulf(m): 8:28pm On Dec 10, 2018 |
To the OP, there is no silver bullet and pretty much every view expressed on here is valid. In my own experience, I believe God just wanted to elevate me. Most people will call it luck. You need to work hard as a student and even more so as a lawyer Try and graduate with 2.1. Work hard on your diction and writing. If you are in Lagos, start looking for internships in big law firms before you get to law school. Get a mentor who has made it. The person does not necessarily need to be a much older person. There are young lawyers making waves in corporate practice in top law firms in Lagos. If you have the means, after 2-3 years of practice, try and get an LLM from the US, Canada or the UK. Above all keep improving yourself as a person and who knows what will happen. All the best. The profession is not for the fainthearted. Having said all that, I know mates who left law and have become hugely successful in business. May God guide you. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I really don't have an issue with paying for Trolley but there should be a standard fare. I have been to a few airports that you don't have to pay for trolley: Houphet Boigny, Abidjan, Entebbe, Uganda, Oliver Tambo, Jo'burg, Incheon, South Korea, Philly Airport, Heathrow. However, I have paid for trolley in Boston for 1 dollar. |
Travel / Re: What Can A Young Lawyer Do In Canada, The USA, Newzealand Or Australia? by Beowulf(m): 1:14pm On Sep 20, 2018 |
OP, my advice to you would be to first get a job in a top law firm in Nigeria and get some experience under your belt. I will recommend that you spend at least 3 years in such a law firm before thinking of proceeding to LLM. I will speak to the US and UK being two jurisdictions I have some experience in. First, your chances of securing a legal role even after getting some experience in Nigeria is very slim unless you did a JD program. An LLM program isn't what it used to be and it is terribly expensive. However, with decent experience coupled with an LLM from the top US schools you can get into some Development Finance Institutions. Getting a job in a US law firm is almost an impossible feat even if you have New York Bar qualifications. I know a bunch of friends that recently graduated from Ivy League universities and couldn't land any law firm gig even with New York Bar qualifications. However, you have more chances in the UK but doing an LLM there is not only expensive but it does not get you through the door either. They do not generally regard foreign experience but recently they have started regarding Nigerian law experience especially in transactional practice. However, for you to convince them, not only must you have a very good LLM, you must also have a strong transactional experience and then you have to pray and hope. Trust me there is no shortcut to it. I can tell you from experience but one of the greatest disservice you would do to yourself is to rush off to LLM without experience. Ps: Don't travel for studies without enough funds otherwise the suffering of Job will have nothing on what you will go through. Again, I am telling you from experience. All the best and may God guide you 22 Likes 2 Shares |

Gone through the comments here and most were quite helpful surprisingly and of course there are those that think that there is failing in you as a parent. My prayer for everyone is to have a child with no issues. It is a bad place to be. I can see how calm and courteous you are even in the face of provocative comments. What they don't get is that there is nothing that can be said to you that you haven't probably thought even worse to yourself concerning your boy's situation. Just do all you can as you are obviously doing just like I and other similarly situated parents are doing for our little ones and leave the rest to the good Lord. 4 Likes |

That's half of Your problem solved if you are worried about someone on your side asking why you deleted the initial message. For me I have a spelling OCD, so once my spelling is wrong I delete and resend. Of course it's easier to reply on the incorrect message and correct it but I can't just stand the incorrect spelling or sentence staying out there. |

Alariiwo: Bro good evening. I rarely comment on NL these days due to the rank tribalism on here especially between Igbo and Yoruba folks. I have seen horrible tribalistic comments here but there is something very devilish and mean about this your comment. It was uncalled for and it is completely indefensible. I wish you would man up and say sorry. This life is very funny and none of us knows what is around the corner. You don't know this family and you made this comment. God is up somewhere clocking our deeds. I have received my just desserts on earth for some of the bad things I have done. Retribution is very real. It is also very sad that some people actually liked and shared the post! I am not saying don't hate Igbo people but there should be a line in the sand somewhere. Stay blessed and enjoy the rest of the year. |

For instance the way we call cow which must Igbos call efi, evi, eshi, ehi depending on their dialects, we call it evwi. 1 Like 1 Share |

AceVentura: With all due respect, the bit in bold could not be further from the truth! No bank in Nigeria will ever or has ever done that. When the bank sacks you, they crash your loan into your account and soak up every credit there. If there's nothing, it throws your account into debit! In fact, in some cases you will see a credit alert for your salary for that month enter your account immediately followed by a debit alert for the same amount for the loan repayment. I think it's also presumptuous to think his sister was involved in something shady. I know many friends "tsunamied" from banks for no reason. A friend went on maternity leave, came back and on the first day was sacked! She couldn't log into her system and IT told her to speak with HR. 2 Likes |

Career / Re: Appointment Terminated Unjustly And The Staff Asked To Refund Salaries by Beowulf(m): 8:01am On Oct 08, 2017 |
Op, sorry about your sister's predicament. It is typical of banks to behave that way when they terminate your employment. Please note that an employer has a right to terminate your employment for no reason. The type of employment you have will determine the consequences the employer will suffer for such arbitrary termination. For the one your sister and most employees have in Nigeria, you are entitled to nothing more than your salary in lieu or any other payment accrued to you prior to or upon the termination. To your specific query, the bank has no legal basis to accelerate the loan because they instigated the process of making your sister's ability to pay the loan untenable, at least for now. If you look at the offer letter for that loan, it should state that the bank has a right to change the interest rate on the loan. What the bank will do now is to charge your sister interest at a commercial rate and not at the concessional staff rate which is currently on. I will advise your sister not to panic about the loan. The key thing is for her to get a new job. Once she does, she can discuss with the loan work-out unit of the bank on restructuring the loan payment. If she speaks well, they may even still keep or revert the interest at the staff rate. Finally, I don't advise that you do this but many ex bank staff never get to repay their loans especially when laid off. Nothing will generally happen but you will have a bad credit history. Most folks don't know it but we have a credit database in Nigeria once you borrow from a bank. You won't be able to borrow from another with a bad credit history once the credit check is done. Secondly, you won't get any reference from your bank for a new job unless you repaid them their money. I wish your sister all the best and know that it's not the end of the world. 19 Likes 1 Share |
