Politics / Re: Lagos 'competes' With New York City (photo) by betty202020(m): 1:57pm On Jul 26, 2015
ibadantiti:
Lagos Competes with New York City

Their canoes drift on the water as piles of rubbish float outside their shacks.
Shabby shacks on stilts, floating waste and rickety boats fill the expanse of murky water.
But for the thousands of poor people forced to live in Nigeria's infamous Makoko slum in Lagos occupied by the people of the Yoruba ethnic group , this is their home. shocked
Every day life for the many fishermen and their families revolves around paddling and rowing through the filthy, oily water in the slum - but this does not stop the young children from beaming when they see a camera.
Authorities threatened to knock down the dilapidated homes, which are classed as 'illegal' buildings and have been branded an 'environmental nuisance', the BBC reported.
The threat, which was issued in July and gave residents just 72 hours notice, saw some homes reportedly having their stilts hacked off and shacks being destroyed.
The move struck fear in many of the dwellers hearts and they feared they would be left without shelter as they had nowhere to go or anyone to turn to.

But, months after the reported demolition warning, a group is now planning on building a floating school, in a bid to improve the lives of the youngsters who live in Makoko.
The settlement, which is built on Lake Lagos, is regarded as an eyesore by authorities as it is built on a huge waterfront.

Activists strongly criticised the clearance in July, saying the move would mean thousands would be displaced, the BBC reported.
The slum is visible from the bridge which connects the Nigerian mainland to the Lagos' rich island districts, and the eradication of the slum is part of a plan to clean up Lagos and improve its image.
The infamous slum was said to be created in the 18th century as a fishing village, but has ballooned as others have sought to find a home.

owobokiri:
2.1 billion is just the amount borrowed to rebiuld his North East. It is not the total amount involved. There will be other budgetary provisions for his NE. For instance, he forked out over 22 million usd for the same cause barely 48 hours in power. The federal government has also taken over the total management of the displaced peoples zones from the state governments, irrespective of the fact that states like Bornu collect some of the biggest allocations from Abuja! All these while one buhari is busy refusing to pay for the education of ex-militants based on an amnesty programme that was tailored to rebiuld the Niger Delta.. Mind you money borrowed will be paid not from earnings coming from some prehistoric groundnut pyramids, but from eastern Nigerias oil! . . The Nerve. .
we Biafrans don't need him and his developments. we are 100% OK without that. even if he like let him invest £500b in north east alone poverty rate in that zone will still be too high. think of it, north that has led the country for 39 years is still dying of poverty, is it paltry $2.1b will end poverty? cool down.

Xetima:
Everyone seems to have forgotten APC promises. Baba Buhari is busy globetrotting while Boko Haram reclaim five LGAS. Why are we not hearing of the following again:

1. Masses N5000 monthly pay, or did Pastor Osinbajo lie about the plan? This is July 2015 nothing appears on the horizon.

2. 3 million jobs for 2015, we have not seen any ooo!

3. Subsidy removal, are we back to GEJ days if subsidy continuity?

4. Free meals for school children, any plans? School resumes in September ooo!

5. Massive housing projects, nothing seems to have been heard in this area now!

6. Naira to equate Dollar at $1:N1. Baba, I bought $ at N245 and £ at 350 recently for my professional subscriptions ooo!

7. Petrol to sell for N45. The marketers are threatening and even selling above N87 ooo! Hope you are aware.

8. N7500 for unemployed Youth Corpers. A new batch have just been discharged, I hope you can start with them now.

9. 45000 megawatts of electricity. The rains have helped push capacity created by the last regime to 4500, I hope you know the rains will soon stop?

10. Decimate Boko Haram in two months. Boko Haram have now reclaimed 5 LGA they lost to the military in the later days of GEJ regime. Hope you are aware.

11. To lead battle against insurgency from the front. Baba, the war is in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, not Abuja. Please, do the needful. T least visit the zone as GEJ did?

12. To fight corruption, please remember that the $150 billion stolen in the past decades and ensure retrieval. If I may remind you, we have cases all the way from $2.8illion in the 70s and 80s, I hope you included this in your calculation, if not make the recoverable $153Biillion

13. I belong to nobody and everybody, I hope you have not forgotten so soon. Your recent outburst in US is totally at variance with thus statement.

14. I am now a converted democrat, please remember to respect the rule of law and legislative and judiciary arms if government.

15. No corrupt official would be found in my regime, please look very well. The Amaechis, Tinubu's, Atikus, Objs, Saraki's, Elrufais, etc were EFCC candidates at one time or anither.

I rest my case for now, I shall remind you again in two month's time and hopefully keep updating you. If you forgot any of these promises kindly ask Mr Adesina to remind you. Finally, Chibok girls were kidnapped from their hostel, not hotel as you said recently, except of course if they were actually being camped in a hotel. Nothing is impossible in Nigeria abyway.
nawaooooo, he is owing two months now and maybe paying in arrears. APC and lies is like bread and butter. APC will as well say that Buhari never made such promise. nairaland cronners will defend him.

cuteboy2:
Press Statement issued in August 2012 is haunting President Buhari, and we have it on good authority that this is the underlying reason for Buhari's change of tune yesterday about probing past leaders, except Jonathan's government.

The concern is that IBB and OBJ have very damaging records of Buhari's tenure as Petroleum Minister under OBJ and as Chairman of PTF under General Sani Abacha.

Extract from the post;

Sometime last year, Maryam Abacha, the widow of late General Sani Abacha, gave a detailed interview to Tell magazine that the Abacha family was instrumental in conscripting Buhari into politics.

If it is true, then the incorruptible is then rotten. because its the guilty that is always affraid.
