Images leaked to the Sunday Telegraph show emaciated migrants packed into cramped cells in the searing Middle East heat. 

Prisoners say they are 'treated like animals' by Saudi guards who beat them with whips and electric cords and toss away the bodies of migrants who died of heatstroke or suicide.

Saudi Arabia came under pressure for deporting thousands of illegal migrants when the pandemic first arrived, and has since been cramming them in prisons to stop them spreading the disease in their overcrowded homes. 

One image taken on a smuggled phone shows migrants lying nearly naked on the floor of a filthy cell with dozens of people crammed into neighbouring rooms. 

In another room, a corpse lay on the floor covered by a blanket after a migrant died of heatstroke - with others allegedly struggling for food and water.  

'It's hell in here. We are treated like animals and beaten every day,' said Abebe, a migrant from Ethiopia. 

'My only crime is leaving my country in search of a better life. But they beat us with whips and electric cords as if we were murderers.'  

Another migrant said that 'we have been left to die here', adding that he had not been outside the area of a school classroom since March

Others said they have received no medical treatment and that filth from the toilets was overflowing into the cells. 


Human rights groups have long warned that prisons are potential disaster zones because of the possible spread of the disease in dirty, confined spaces. 

According to the Sunday Telegraph, one of the prisons is in Al Shumaisi near Mecca, while another is in Jazan near the border with Yemen. 

Those two alone are thought to contain hundreds of people, and there may be more prisoners in other parts of the compound. 

Human Rights Watch said the migrants were being subjected to 'squalid, crowded and dehumanising conditions' at the detention centres. 

A petroleum-rich state such as Saudi Arabia had 'no excuse' for detaining migrants in such conditions, a spokesman said.  

Saudi Arabia's government has not responded to the claims.    

The UN said in April that Saudi Arabia had deported 2,870 Ethiopian migrants to Addis Ababa since the start of the pandemic.

Five persons were confirmed dead in a multiple accident at Sagamu interchange diversion area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on th8.
The Spokesman of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi who conformed the accident to journalists in Abeokuta, the State capital, explained that the accident involved a Mazda space bus marked, GGE 296 DC, a DAF tanker with no registration number and a Benz truck marked, FST 340 XW.
According to him, the accident was caused by reckless driving and wrongful overtaking on the part of the space bus driver.
Akinbiyi added that eight people were involved in the accident, including five male adults and three female adults, saying that two male adults and three female adults died from the accident.
He said: “According to eyewitness account the crash was caused by the Mazda Space Bus due to wrongful overtaking and reckless driving.
“We learnt from the eyewitness that the space bus and the tanker were inbound Ibadan from Lagos along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at the diversion axis after Sagamu interchange.
“In an attempt to overtake a truck in front, it had an head-on collision with another truck coming from Ibadan inbound Lagos which kicked it under the tanker before veering into the bush killing five people on the spot.
“One from the truck (motor boy) and four from the space bus, including the driver.
“The tanker driver ran away while the driver of the truck is recuperating at Idera Hospital in Sagamu.
“The vehicles have been taken to the Area Police Command, Sagamu,” he said.
Akinbiyi condoled with the families of the deceased, while calling on motorists to avoid reckless and wrongful overtaking at diversion and construction zones, saying they should maintain the 50k/ph speed limit.
He disclosed that the injured victims were taken to Idera Hospital, Sagamu while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at same hospital morgue.

An Islamic group in Lagos has accused the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of avoiding Muslims in appointments.

 
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) says many qualified Muslim teachers on grade level 17 are still marking time when they should have been appointed principals.

 
It appealed to the Lagos State government (LASG) to revisit the education sector, with a view to correcting the glaring lop-sidedness in the appointment of tutor-generals and school principals.


The Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the appeal in a statement on Tuesday.

 Akintola says: “Lagos State has been divided into six education districts since the days of Chief Bola Tinubu. Each education district has a tutor general/permanent secretary saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the activities of the schools and their personnel. Tinubu, a Muslim, ensured fairness by sharing the six posts 50:50 between Muslims and Christians.

Akinwunmi Ambode made it 4:2 in favour of Christians. The tricky game employed was to appoint some Muslims who have long converted to Christianity but who retained their Muslim names. It would then appear as if Muslims were appointed yet they were cleverly shortchanged.

Under Governor Babajide Sanwoolu today there is no single Muslim tutor-general. There is also an uneven distribution of heads of department in the six districts. There are five departments in each district with a head of department (HOD) directing its affairs. So there are thirty (30) HODs in all. These HODs are part of the management team. Unfortunately there are only five (5) Muslim HODs out of the thirty (30).

There are six hundred and sixty eight (668) principals in Lagos State public schools. Of this number, five hundred and sixty-five (565) are Christians while only one hundred and three (103) are Muslims.

This implies that Christian principals are 84.6% while Muslim principals are 15. 4%. Like in the case of tutor-generals, some principals who have long converted to Christianity but who retained their Muslim names were made principals while the real Muslims are left to rot in the system.

What is the implication of this imbalance? Firstly, tutor-generals influence the appointment of school principals but anybody can guess what will happen in a situation where all the tutor-generals are Christians.

Again, the use of hijab in public schools is largely determined by the disposition of school principals. Since the ratio is 84:15, it becomes clear why the majority of the school principals disallow the use of hijab in their schools despite a subsisting court judgement in favour of its use.

MURIC calls for the appointment of more Muslims as school principals. We lay emphasis on the appointment of real Muslims and not Muslims who have converted but retained their Muslim names.
 
This should not be difficult if the authorities consult leaders of the Muslim Teachers Association (MUTAN). We believe that our call is timely and it is more so particularly when the state government has recently invited applications into the position of TG/PS and it is poised to recruit more teachers.

The question of non-avalability of qualified Muslims does not arise because Lagos is replete with hundreds of well qualified and competent Muslims who are yearning for the opportunity to exhibit their potentials. In addition, many Muslim teachers who are on grade level 17 appear to have been placed on redundancy as they are not appointed as principals or vice principals. Their list can easily be obtained from the leadership of MUTAN or that of the Lagos State Muslim Community.

There is also lop-sidedness in favour of Christians in the manner school assemblies are conducted. Most schools give Christians four days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) while Muslims have Friday alone. Some allow Muslims to use Thursday and Friday. For fairness, we suggest that Christians should be given two days (Monday and Tuesday), Muslims should also have two days (Thursday and Friday) while Wednesday should be left for Yoruba assembly.

Our appeal to the Lagos State government is to make the education sector a model of excellence in keeping with the status of Lagos as the centre of excellence. Lagos has always been in the forefront of liberal policies, improved workers’ welfare, modernisation and other forms of human progress.

This is not praise-singing. The records are there for all to applaud Lagos. Apart from Enugu in 1980, Lagos was one of the first states to establish a state university (1984), the first to increase maternity leave to six months, the first to build an atlantic city (Eko Atlantic), the first to introduce local council development areas (LCDA) and many more pacesetting initiatives. Lagos leads, others follow.

An Islamic group in Lagos has accused the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of avoiding Muslims in appointments.

MURIC is known to have lodged certain complaints against some states in Nigeria concerning their treatment of Muslims. It will therefore be another ‘first’ and another feather in Lagos’ cap if the state’s education authorities address the issues raised above before others do so.

“We recall that the Lagos Muslim Community under the able leadership of Professor T.G.O. Gbadamosi and the Chief Imam of Lagos, His Eminence, Engr Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou Noula, raised some of these issues in the presence of the incumbent governor during the 2019 electoral campaigns. We honestly believe that it is high time they were addressed,” he stated.

A batch of frozen chicken wings exported from Brazil to China tested positive for coronavirus, Chinese officials announced Thursday.

The infected poultry was discovered in the city of Shenzhen during routine screenings of imported meat and seafood carried out since June, the city government said in a notice.

The screenings were implemented after a coronavirus outbreak in Beijing was linked to a seafood market.

People who may have come into contact with the chicken wings, along with food products stored near the batch, were tested by Shenzhen’s health authorities. All those results came back negative.

On Wednesday, China also reported that the coronavirus was found on packages of shrimp shipped in from Ecuador.

COVID-19, which has killed over 749,000 people worldwide, was first linked to a seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has been called on by the Kano State Council of Jamaat Mosques Imams to immediately sign singer Yahya Aminu’s Death Warrant, which is before him after an Upper Sharia Court passed the judgement.

Recall that a Kano Sharia Court had sentenced Yahya Aminu to death by hanging for Blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam.

The Kano State council of Friday mosque Imams in its reaction to the judgement commended the Upper Shari’ah court for passing the death judgement to 22-year-old Yahaya Aminu.

The Chairman of the council, Muhammad Nasir Adam gave this commendation on Wednesday, he noted that the judgement is according to the teachings of Islam.

Adam further stated that he is sure that the Kano State Governor will sign the execution Warrant of the penalty.”

He called on Muslims to refrain from supporting any move capable of denting the image of the prophet of Islam Muhammad peace be upon him.

Also, the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Harun Sani Ibn Sina, supported the judgement of the Upper Sharia Court which sentenced Mr Aminu to death by hanging.

Mr Ibn Sina said the board is fully in support of the judgment as it was based on the provision of Shari’ah (Islamic law)
