Armament

1-Hellfire missile: no need to explain much about this infamous missile. One of the most advanced, top attack, air-to-surface missiles used on the AH-64 Apache, MQ-1 Predator UAV etc...

2-Hydra with APKWS: 70mm missiles with laser guidance improving accuracy to +93% hit rate.

3-GBU-12 Paveway II: The Paveway II is a laser guidance kit for bombs used by A-10, B-52, F-111, F-117, F-15, F- 16, F/A-18.

4-GBU-58 Paveway II: The Paveway II is a laser guidance kit for bombs used by A-10, B-52, F-111, F-117, F-15, F- 16, F/A-18.

5-The aircraft can also support other types of precision guided bombs, air-to-ground missiles, and air-to-air missiles.

Operation Effectiveness

To the contrary of a jet fighter, the A-29 can loiter (fly over) the battlefield for up to 8.5 hours (with external fuel tanks); this is compared to 2-3 hours with close-air support jets.

The A-29 can take off from virtually any flat surface that is long enough, it doesn't strictly require a true runway.
Operation Cost

Thanks to its turbo-propeller engine, the cost-per-flight-hour to fly these compared to a typical jet fighter is fraction of the cost.

Operation cost also involves consumable parts, and air-frame degradation, both of which come at a lower cost than a modern jet.

Electronics

The MX-15 camera/sensor is used on fixed-wing, rotary-wing, UAV, and aerostat all around the world. It is an advanced ISR and SAR camera with ability to see day/night, in poor weather, and from altitudes of 10,000 to 30,000 feet. Watch it in action.

The cockpit is equivalent to those on 4th and 5th generation aircraft.

Has advanced avionics and communications that are similar to those of 4th and 5th generation aircraft.
Has ballistic computer to perform computations such as impact point which would then be displayed on a head-up display.

Guys what the heck on earth do you want to prosecute the ongoing war... cool

Facts & answers regarding the A-29 Super Tucano for the novice.

This article aims to clarify once for all what the A-29 Super Tucano are about, and whether you should really care that they are not jets. The target audience is the general public, not those who are savvy in military topics.

The amount of negative feedback & ridicule that came along to the announcement of the 12 A-29 Super Tucano deal to thw NAF and other packages to the deal. These platforms will transit the Nigerian Air Force capability to a whole new level which was not reachable, and had the NAF had it before, would have changed a lot of things when it comes to the war against terrorism.

Here are some facts, and answers to frequent statements that clarify any doubt.

General

The A-29 is a further advancement of the original EMB-314 which includes changes in the ISR capability, cockpit, supported arms, engine, and additional armor.
The Super Tucano primary goal and role is not to be a trainer. It was made to be light-attack aircraft designed for counter-insurgency, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance.

Survivability

The aircraft has advanced counter-measure systems against surface-to-air-missiles (short range and MANPADs). The MILDS F missile warning system and ALE-47 counter-measure dispenser in fact are used in some of the advanced aircraft and jet fighters, such as F-15, F-16, and F/A-18.
The MILDS F detects the incoming missiles, and the ALE-47 automatically releases the flare or chaff counter-measures accordingly.

The A-29 adds up armor plates to those of the original Embrarer EMB-314 Super
Tucano. Cockpit, fuel system and engine components all have armor plates by TenCate.

The A-29 can fly up to 35,000 feet and can engage targets from ~26,000 feet (Using Hellfire), a common 23 mm anti-aircraft (AA) gun max altitude is 6,500 feet, and a 35 mm AA gun is ~13,000 feet.

The whole thing is funny to me.

A country with a multiple internal military operations, fighting BH for the last 7 years, and he's talking about foreign aggression.
I wonder of... shocked

@SLBM in shot you are telling me that if you where the CAS you rather squander such a funds on 4th gen Jets like the SU25 & 35, latest MISS or probably the French Rafale grin

Anyway if you have been following these thread and other we all have been praying we lay our hands on few Migs & Su. But do not under estimate the Tucano because it's the best and proven assets for COIN, that's all what we are saying.

How? It depends on budgetary allocation from the FG and the executive decisions. Even with all the will in the world how will the CAS increase funding?
I don't get you..... huh

The CAS or any military chief do not have the power to increase military budget. Let's leave that to the presidency and the Senate's.

We bought the super tucano's not from the annual military budget, hope you know that.

SLBM:
Bidexi...you forgot to mention the fact that each of these countries acquiring the Super Tucano actually have an airforce with lirs of 4th gen combat aircraft. One American carrier battle group alone flies between 60 and 80 FA/18 hornet. Another Tucano operator Brazil have 4th gen fighters in enough numbers to defend the nation's airspace. Nigeria relies on SIX or EIGHT Chengdu F-7N fighters to defend the nation's airspace yet is pouring over half a billion dollars, Cameroons entire defense budget on 10 Super Tucanos.....yet you see nothing wrong with downward spiral of the NAF?

Can you honestly tell that planes can protect 200 million Nigerians with billions in oil and other critical infrastructure. No strategic air defense missiles. The Strela2 Manpad is does not cut it. The $600 million splashed on 10 worthless aircraft will transform the NAF strike fleet into a 21st century high-tech fighting force.
With all honestly I can tell you that you are so so selfish. All you are worried about is about a contested air space and 4th gen these and that huh

A country like Nigeria where people are dying in the North EAST, CENTRAL & WEST AND all you are concerned with is getting 4th gen aircraft, Are you fighting a war.

Anyway we will solve the internal conflicts and aggression we have forest before thinking of acquiring your so called 4th gen aircraft.

Are you comparing us now with the United States and Brazil huh I don't see any threat for surrounding neighboring countries; I don't trust Chad and if they raise there ugly head. Trust me with the current airforce assets we will crush them.

defense budget is small but you could spend $600+mln on a propeller craft
You should know better. You've been keen on saying the super tucsno is a propeller aircraft and it goes beyond that.

The tucsno is what we need to prosecute these COIN in the North East. You have to go and read about the aircraft.

The A-29 Super Tucano is an aircraft that the U.S. Air Force paid to develop precisely for partner countries that needed air support for their counter terrorism operations. The super tucano has wing-mounted machine guns, weapons integration with advanced surveillance and targeting pods, precision-guided bombs, and even air-to-air missiles.

This makes it an excellent territorial defense and close support plane for low-budget air forces, as well as a surveillance asset with armed attack capability. The Brazilian Airforce uses it this way. for instance; alongside very advanced EMB-145 airborne radar and maritime patrol jet platforms..etc

The super tucano as is own distinct capabilities- to carry it's own ISR and strike capabilities, which these 4th gen Jets wouldn't offer plus cost & maintenance.

I think should do a little more research on the super tucano and NAF super tucano's contract. The whole $600M is not only for the 12 aircrafts alone, it comes with a whole lot of packages.

The NAF is the only Air Force in existence that spend more resource and manpower building farming centres, trading shops, sporting events, fish farming and ground forces than it spends on improving the quality of its aircrafts, capital acquisition, RnD and effective air defence. What's is the NAF gonna open next, a sewing machine factory?
That's totally wrong. Where are you getting your facts from Mr.. huh
You want to entrust million's worth of aircraft to someone whose his or her personnel welfare is not well taken care of.

The present airforce is doing well in the area of R & D, proper welfare of he personnel, man power building and improving the quality of its present aircrafts/assets.

Our problem in these country is that we are use to corrupt leaders rather than the few good ones undecided

NAF COMMISSIONS FORENSIC CRIME LABORATORY, TRAINS PERSONNEL IN CORE INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS, CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION

In furtherance of its efforts to effectively employ scientific approaches to crime fighting, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned the newly remodelled and equipped Forensic Crime Laboratory at the 057 Provost Investigation Group (057 PIG) Ikeja, Lagos. The event, which took place today, 24 September 2018, also witnessed the commissioning of a newly constructed Headquarters Building for 057 PIG, which is aimed at ensuring a conducive environment for the NAF Directorate of Air Provost to effectively and efficiently carry out criminal investigations as well as train its personnel.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Guest of Honour, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, lauded the efforts of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in providing a befitting and functional environment whilst making inroads in the application of forensics in policing. According to him, the reactivation of the Lab is a testimony of the NAF leadership’s commitment to push the boundaries and improve on the methodologies and technological platforms to detect and analyse evidence of crime in the Service. He remarked that the effectiveness of the facility could, with time, become a force multiplier with regards to raising and maintaining the morale of airmen which would, in turn, enhance operational capability. While urging the beneficiaries of the facility to exploit its potential to the maximum, Mr Idris commended the CAS for the unprecedented achievements recorded in the area of capacity building in the NAF as well as for playing a pivotal role in bringing normalcy to troubled areas of the country.

While making his remarks, the CAS noted that the rapid growth of technology has led to an increase in the rate and extent of crimes. He observed that, following the expansion of the NAF Force Structure, it became obvious that the Service required a law enforcement arm with the capacity to effectively employ scientific approaches in all facets of its critical competencies, in order to enhance security and discipline in the Service. He noted that it was in fulfilment of this requirement that the new PIG Headquarters Building and NAF Forensic Crime Lab were being commissioned. Air Marshal Abubakar stated that, as a prerequisite to provision of the Lab, the NAF had embarked on the conduct of various specialists training for the personnel to man the Group. In this regard, the NAF, in conjunction with foreign partners from the United Kingdom (UK), had trained 16 Provost personnel in the Core Investigative Skills and Interview Techniques, while another set of 16 personnel would be concluding the Crime Scene Investigation Course by the end of the week. It is noteworthy that the last time such training was conducted in the NAF was about 30 years ago.

The CAS further disclosed that the investigative capacity of the Provost would be further enhanced through the training of 10 Provost Officers in the Advanced Detective Course at the Police Staff College Jos before the end of the year. He mentioned that the NAF was also expanding and enhancing its utilization of Military Working Dogs to boost physical security of critical NAF Bases as well as for integration into the conduct of Combat Search and Rescue operations. “In the same vein, 140 Air Provost personnel would soon commence the Force Protection in Complex Air Ground Environment training, in conjunction with the British Military Advisory Training Team. Furthermore, the rejuvenation of the Air Provost’s Explosive Ordnance Detection capability is projected to commence by the end of this year”, Air Marshal Abubakar added. The CAS also seized the opportunity to thank the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his leadership and determination in providing the enabling environment for the NAF to thrive, while also expressing the gratitude of the Service to the National Assembly, especially the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on the Air Force, for their commitment in appropriating the resources to enable the NAF effectively perform its constitutional roles. The CAS equally congratulated the NAF Logistics Branch for undertaking the work by Direct Labour. Air Marshal Abubakar ended by charging all Air Provost personnel to develop a strategic foresight founded on innovation, flexibility, willingness to collaborate with other security agencies as well as objectivity and fairness, in order to successfully meet the demands of contemporary policing.

Earlier in his address, the Commander 057 PIG, Group Captain Garuba Bello, stated that the Forensic Lab would significantly assist Air Provost Investigators in obtaining credible evidence for successful prosecution of cases in a court of law while also adding to the country’s crime fighting resources. One of the highlights of the event was the simulation of a Crime Scene Investigation, conducted by resource persons from Sustainable Criminal Justice Solutions UK and NAF personnel, to demonstrate the intricate process involved in evidence collection/capturing as well as the importance of ensuring effective control at a crime scene.
