Business / Re: Banks To Pay Customers Money Sent From Abroad In Naira by bigtt76(f): 9:04am On Feb 09
Isn't this the problem we are all trying to solve? If you crave a higher rate from the banks similar to those offered by the Fintech apps, then you are indirectly supporting the unrealistic Naira exchange rate fluctuating at will. When the banks are starved of IMTO inflows into the country, how then would they support genuine requests for FX outflows if they don't have any? Yes they had stocked piled cheap FX to resell at high rates due to pressure from the Fintech apps. With the new CBN regulations, the banks can easily match what the Fintech apps pay out. This is in a bid to attract more FX and push down the rates.

Mavor:
Nigeria will have a serious FX inflow problem. No one will use banks with their rubbish FX rate. Crypto all the way!

The report quoted that over 60% of graduates went into care in the year to 2023.
However this figure will drop significantly once the new CQC regulations ramp up as no more buying/selling of COS and only properly vetted care homes and agencies would be able to sponsor.

If they are not NHS trust, chances are that they don't sponsor for the Health Care Visa which is exempted from the salary threshold. Any other listed there are because they're jobs in the health sector.

Take note also that NHS sponsor on skilled worker visa for jobs that are not directly health related and those ones are affected by the threshold.

Celebrities / Re: Why I Ended Up In The Village – Miss Nigeria 1963, Alice Alache Adepe [VIDEO] by bigtt76(f): 6:34pm On Jan 25
Den don invent noodles that year?

owukpa:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTeoBp2KFZQ
Miss Alache, Miss Nigeria 1963, has lamented that her state, Benue, failed to celebrate her despite making her proud.

Alache broke the jinx as the first woman from the then Benue-Plateau to win the highly coveted crown.

Against the backdrop of fame, Mama Alice’s life took an unexpected turn, leading her to the tranquil hamlet of Otukpo Icho in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Sixty years after her historic victory, she graciously shares her poignant story exclusively with Idoma Television.

We are aware that you were crowned Miss Nigeria in 1963. You are from this town (Otukpo). Today, our team from Idoma Voice thought it wise to come pay you a visit and have a chat with you. Could you please tell us more about yourself?

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your team for coming all the way to visit me. Thank you very much.

I was crowned Miss Kano before becoming Miss Nigeria in the same year – 1963.

After my victory in Kano, I was taken to Lagos for the Miss Nigeria contest. Then, it was Daily Times (Newspaper) that was sponsoring the beauty contest.

During the contest, it was Benue-Plateau. It was a friend of mine that encouraged me to join the contest.

An Igbo lady called Chinyere. When they arranged the contest in Kano, she met me and said we should join the contest.

I told her I was not interested because, in my place, the moment you begin to showcase yourself, people will be saying negative things about you.

Above all, my father was hot-tempered, so I was scared, but she insisted.
I told her what would happen if we didn’t win; she pointedly said if I didn’t win, she would win. So I reluctantly joined the Miss Kano beauty contest, and I won.

Those of us that put in for the competition in Lagos were from 19 states. I am not the first Miss Nigeria; the first Miss Nigeria was Theresa Ogunbiyi from the southwest.

It was 7up Company that the competition took place, and I emerged victorious.

But unfortunately for my friend (Chinyere), she didn’t win.

So, after my victory, the Woman Editor of Daily Times, who was in charge, Theresa Ogunbiyi, took us to London. We were on a tour of London for about two weeks before we returned home.

After my trip to London, I returned to Kano to continue with my business until my mum died.

This place I am occupying is not my father’s house. My family house is somewhere down the hills.

After my mother died, as the most senior daughter, I came here to do the necessary rites. This is my mother’s house.

And I have been staying here ever since.

You said it was your friend that encouraged you to join the beauty contest; did you buy any registration forms then?

Not at all, during our time, it was not about money or education. All they wanted was charisma and beauty.

What inspired you to go into the contest?

It was because my friend encouraged that we should go that either of us must win. The contest then, how was it like? Like? What did you people do then?

Nothing special; after my emergence as Miss Kano, we were taken to Lagos and we were camped in a hotel – 19 of us from various states. It wasn’t all about money or connections.

It was based on merit. We spent about three weeks before the day of the competition.

Apart from the London trip, what were the other benefits?
Various companies gave us many things. Items like a sewing machine, cartons of noodles, and several other things
.

After winning the competition, did you put it for other contests like Miss World?

Not at all. I didn’t go anywhere after that. Why?

Because they take anybody to Miss World; even those that won before me didn’t go for Miss World.

You said it was after your mother’s death that you relocated to this village.

Yes, so that the house won’t be empty.

So, from 1963 after your victory till now, do you have any regrets?

Not really.

The only regret is that I had thought that after my victory, my state government would have remembered me, but they abandoned me. That is my only regret.

But I thank God that I am still alive. I am sure you were not even born when I won the crown.

So, you were born after that, and you have now known me. So, I have no regrets apart from the fact that my own state has forgotten me.

Do you have any advice for young ladies going into beauty contests?

Yes, I have things to tell them, but none of them come to me.

I think in Benue as a whole, it was Ene Lawani who became the second person from Benue to win Miss Nigeria.

But despite that, I still thank God for sparing my life and you people have remembered to come celebrate me. I am grateful.

It's things like this that lead to new entrants getting pressured unnecessarily. Life should be easy but we tend to make it difficult when we look into other people's garden without knowing the efforts that goes into keeping it green.

Health are and construction work are two different fields and you don't expect them to offer same wage plan. Likewise spending habits. What is convenient to one person may not to the other. Don't overdo pass yourself.

igbsam:
Wahala wahala wahala....

Out with a couple of friends, one of the guys works as a health care assistant. Moved into the uk in 2022 as a dependant. Currently earns £1605 or thereabout as take home pay after tax. Due to child care, he couldn't work more hours, said this is the reason he's earning such doing his 40hrs a week and claimed he is comfortable as his wife earns almost same too being the main applicant sponsored.

The wahala there is that, another bobo that works in construction blatantly told him, that is not a decent pay despite him covering 40hrs shift a week. Na so kasala burst o! Clash of egos, ironically, both of them just entered same time. Construction oga said he earns above £2k after tax. Told them even £1500 after tax is a decent pay, but the arguements is now causing a scene. I don book uber leave them. Our new entrants should take it easy

What's your take on this £1600 a decent pay after tax or not ?

Oga goan buy the things yourself o ...that 400k na push money you don give am so cheesy

Valoromega:
We are currently expecting our first child , she should give birth within a this month.

She has requested money for baby things and I have given her over 400k but she hasn’t both the basic things she needs. She usually go with her mom to the market to get the things but they haven’t even both the things the baby will need in the hospital.
They went and bought baby wardrobe even though we already had baby wardrobe that was given to us on our wedding , she also both baby duvet without buying bed , the clothes she bought was for a month old baby , she didn’t even buy the first wear the baby would use , so far I haven’t even seen anything tangible she has bought with 400k plus I’ve given her, she hasn’t even bought the things she needs after delivery .

I don’t know if it’s her mom that’s telling her to buy those things, the mom doesn’t even care where the money comes from , she just demands that we buy this and that .

I was thinking the money I gave her would be enough to buy the most basic things she and the baby needs , now she’s demanding more

Thank you so much for this, I appreciate your contribution. How can I access Freehold new builds ...any idea? Any idea what the highlighted mean?

Solumtoya:

People have done justice to your questions so I will just throw in my opinion. These are personal opinions so seek professional advice or look at your situation closely before making any move.

1. That's totally subjective. An apartment in Leeds can be good or bad for you so one can't tell. I generally avoid buying Apartments for residential purposes for several reasons but they are great for renting.

2. Hmmm... The numbers. A 379k house on a 22 year 90% Mortgage at 5.53% is £2,200 monthly. Almost half of your income seems quite high and will be a struggle for most people. I used 22 year mortgage because I was guessing your age. If the buyer is 30, for instance, and does a 40-year mortgage, repayments could be as low as £1,700 monthly.
The second point is "Leasehold", as you can tell, most of us are not fans of leaseholds. I would avoid them if I can.

3. Service Charge of almost £1k per annum is already high. Anticipate it going higher in future. My service charge is less than £10 monthly. My friend's service charge was raised from about 3k to about 5k per annum. You have no control over that. But if you see a good deal, you have to stomach the service charge las las.

4. Better service, but typically higher costs

deept:

1. Any property is worth going for if it meets your goals and the conditions are right.

2. Only you can answer this question. I will ask myself some questions: What is my outgoing if I am going to pay a mortgage? will I be able to take care of my other needs and save after paying a mortgage? If God forbid household income reduces, do I have some sort of buffer to continue to pay the mortgage until income increases... amongst other questions

3. It is not uncommon, however, question to ask myself is can i afford the extra ~£80 per month cost? what control do I have over 'service charge', this can go up at the discretion of the management company and you have to pay.

4. third party is there to make money

Your NI has come down slightly however because your food bills, energy bills , rent, mortgage has gone up and also because your personal tax free allowance has remained the same(fiscal drag) , You will see ZERO increase in take-home. In effect they took £10 and gave back £2.

Thank you for what you do and congratulations on your new house.

My questions are as follows

1. Do you think an apartment in Leeds is worth going for? I work in the north together with my hubby
2. Do you think a house of £379k (semi-detached Leasehold) is worth going for on a combined income of £4.6k monthly?
3. The service charges is £988.00 per annum - is this ideal?
4. Property developer also noted that they are compelled to give up ownership to a third party in the future ....how does this affect me?

Solumtoya:

It's your choice actually.

The numbers: 35k is about £2.3k monthly. £250k house with a 10% deposit, if you stretch the tenure, you'd be paying about £1,200 monthly. That's half of your salary on Accomodation.

Not exactly ideal.

Have you considered buying in a closeby City like Northampton instead? You can get a 2 bed for half the price or even buy a 3 bed with change

Honestly , I think this someone needs help, serious help.

Someone who has been in the UK for sometime. Has gotten a tonne of experience, enough for them to apply for SKILLED VISA. Keyword: SKILLED. Someone who has gone through the rigours of health & care training, enough to work as an Expatriate in the UK. Someone who made job applications, attended interviews and found eligible for SKILLED worker visa.

Yet someone has to ask a friend to ask on a faceless forum for the link to apply for the visa?

I know that my position may vary with a lot of people here, but I honestly think that some people are not doing themselves any good.
If the question was about some technicalities of completing the visa form, I would say fair enough… but to not take 2 minutes of your own time to google uk visa application link? Imagine the circle. The CoS owner doesn’t know the link. The CoS owner had to ask you, and you too doesn’t know. And both of you couldn’t take 3 minutes to search online, but to come to Nairaland and ask the most rudimentary question?

You (we all) can do better.

Travel / Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by bigtt76(f): 12:39pm On Jan 05
Yes I get that, but sometimes you need to get your foot in the door before you mention these things. If you are asked if you would need it in te future, of course the answer would be yes except you are getting your ILR while on the job but then situations may change ...I may anticipate not needing sponsorship in the future today but tomorrow that changes (vice versa). During recruitment process, recruiters don't want anything that would distract them so they use these things to sift applications out. My thoughts though cheesy

missjekyll:
They asked Do you need sponsorship now or will you need it in future?
Unless he is planning to leave the UK when his PSW expires, the answer to this question is yes.

Since you already have PSW, say no but they will definitely ask you what type of visa you have and you mention same. It shouldn't affect your chances though except the organisation is employing long term in which case 2 years might be too small for them. But I think you shouldn't worry about this for now, concentrate on getting yourself invited for interview. I applied with a student visa and was called up for several interviews, so I don't think its any big deal. All the best.

You should also research companies on the UK Skilled Worker Sponsor lists ...my bro @Hustla can help you with that or you scour on the Gov.uk website.
