Hahaha cheesy We don't discourage people here o, we only tell you the truth about the situation(s) on ground, the final decision is left to you to take.

My first question to you would be - Have you been requested to pay for the placement in the UK? Also forget about people posting or telling you care jobs is nasty or degrading ....if it is, why are they doing it? Many are thriving in it and on sponsorship sef. Truth however is that it can be demanding with high risk of not getting enough shifts to live on cheesy

FaithfulGod4me:
Good morning nairalanders, please i'm in a little fix and need honest opinions.

I have been reading about care giver job and people say its a nasty job and degrading.

I also have an opportunity to enter UK via IT work but we will be trained for some months in the UK on tech skills before job placements.

I have aready done courses on care giving and gotten certificates and have also commensed processing for HCPC registration (i am originally into Healthcare here in Naija but must get UK license before getting a job in my original career and chances of me getting a job in my original career is higher if i am already in UK).

Bottom line is that... The goal now is to enter the UK legally.
Should i take the IT opportunity or the care giver route?

Please don't discourage me. I have been through alot already.

Is the university aware that his visa expires in 2025? And is the visa expiring after the resit date?

Sonniajude:
Good afternoon everyone
Please I need an enquiry about visa curtailment for an undergraduate student whose visa was curtailed because he has no academic activities for the next 60days due to a resit that is meant to be written next year and the university has asked him to leave the uk and reapply for a new visa from Nigeria . Please has anyone been in this situation before and what was the outcome as he is very scared about the situation. This person still have to more years to go for the current course and the current visa was meant to expire 2025 . The person did not also get any letter from UkVI and immigration status still shows details of the current visa. Please I will appreciate it if anyone who has any information about this response to my trend . Thanks in advance

Tinubu Speaks On Request For Presidential Yacht Worth N5 BillionPublished on 2 November 2023 at 11:25 AMBy Rachel Okporu Fadoju
Kindly share this story:

President Tinubu seeks Senate approval for an additional $7.8 billion and €100 million in his 2022-2024 borrowing plan
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has debunked reports making the rounds online over plans to purchase a presidential yacht worth N5 billion.
Naija News earlier reported that the federal government is planning to spend N5 billion to purchase a presidential yacht in the 2023 Supplementary Budget.

It was learned that the proposed sum is under the capital expenditure of the Nigerian Navy’s budget.

According to the breakdown, the Navy will require N62.8 billion for its operations, with recurrent expenditure and capital expenditure gulping N20.4 billion and N42.3 billion, respectively.

However, in a statement on Thursday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temiope Ajayi, clarified that Tinubu didn’t request any yacht and did not need one to perform his function considering the current state of the economy.

According to him, the request for a yacht was framed in the Navy’s budget, and it is assumed that they have an operational reason for it.

The statement reads, “It has become a pattern for some individuals, CSOs and a section of the media to pick one or two line items every budget cycle for sensational headlines, deliberately ignoring context in their reporting.

“The public that should benefit from good journalism, which should primarily educate and adequately inform, is left confused and miseducated due to the mischaracterisation of issues and misrepresentation of facts.

“The trending issues on social media since yesterday are two items in the 2023 supplementary budget. One is the provision for a presidential yacht in the supplementary budget by the Navy and the other is over N6 billion for vehicles to the State House.

“It is important to state clearly that President Bola Tinubu didn’t ask for a presidential yatch and I doubt he needs one to perform the functions of his office. From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget is from the Navy and they must have operational reasons for why it is required.

“The budget office should be in a position to also explain to the public why such expenditure should be accommodated now, considering the economic situation of the country. I must readily admit that the one reason our budgeting system has been a subject of public attack is the very simplistic way some of the line items are described by civil servants, who prepare the budget. Examples abound. Sometimes in 2016, an Enterprise Resource Planning ( ERP) project of the Ministry of Solid Minerals worth over N300m then was captured in that year’s budget as “website”. Naturally, it generated a massive controversy as people, rightly, asked to know the type of website that will be built with N300million.

“It is important to say that journalism should enrich public enlightenment and not create an atmosphere of siege. It is poor reporting to always reduce State House budgetary provisions to the President and Vice President. When the State House makes provision for vehicles, it is reported as if it is the President that will use all the vehicles or eat all the food when a provision is made for food and catering services. We have had such inaccurate reporting in the past.”

Yup! Its good to put out your achievements and reflections on how it would be useful in your target industry but when you go about posting personal verifiable details in public, then it might become an issue of disregarding data privacy.

koonbey:

How do you prove what you know if you don't come to the attention of the people who will make the decisions and get the chance to make your case to them? Those posts circulate, get people taking note of you, create opportunities for connection and engagement that you would very likely never have had otherwise.

You might find it cringe, and obviously some people overdo it, but those posts serve a key purpose and LinkedIn generally is arguably the most important tool for early career success, and especially for immigrants.

cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy ....click baiting is actually a thing you know cheesy

You are right its not wrong really to toot your horn just that its becoming a funny trend ...may be cos its coming to my timeline but I hardly see others posting their raw results. Its good to declare your achievements and reflect back on what you learnt, demonstrate how it could be useful to your potential employers, but going the lenght to post sensitive details would also make your potential employer cringe at that textbook error.

Thewritingnerd:
I see nothing wrong with this sha. Bar the putting sensitive details like your uni number out (maybe done out of elation) , tooting your own horn will never be a bad thing to do. It’s the people thinking you’re doing too much that should probably fix their internal esteem or envy issues.

It’s when you put yourself out there that bigger opportunities come. See this link that you put out now, how we go see am click if you no post am for public forum ? 🌚

Riding on what Justwise said earlier, we all understand that it might not be possible to pay your fees in full before commencement of studies but having the full equivalent in Naira as stated to the UKVI during your visa application should cover the balance on resumption. As a student, you should also make allowance for currency rate fluctuations meaning you shouldn't bank on having the exact full fees equivalent in Naira but rather make some adjustments to cover the difference when there's rate change. Most students complaining about fees today do not have the exact fees equivalent in Naira to start with and that's the problem.

fullclub:

you know what.. giving honest opinion based on abroad is not welcome by Nigerians.

this is why most students when i talk about returning they said they rather die here sleeping in library.

we where 19 people September in Lagos airport coming to London on student route and we shared contact... they are on same boat...no show... non paid their complete fees.. i would have come back but hearing their complain about shame of what Nigerians not hearing their storey.

check the students page ane see people saying they have paid deposit. why didn't they pay full?

Guys

I'm in a dilemma regarding my tuition and will need your advice please.

I'm in the last semester of my master's and have about £2500 outstanding. The problem is I've been changing naira to pounds to pay to this stage since Form A became unreliable. I'm left with the hope of 2m which is just around £1400 at the current black market rate.

I've told the school that I'm working on it but they won't stop sending reminders. With the look of things I can't pay up until I finish and resume full time employment. I once sent them an email explaining the situation of things how the sudden FX hike has almost tripled the fee from the anticipated amount.

I don't know if anyone else is having or has had the same experience. How are you going about it please? I'll appreciate any advice I can get as the frequent emails and threat of potential withdrawal from the school has started affecting my wellbeing. I don't like being in debt. It makes me worry and lose concentration. Thanks

kwakudtraveller:

Currently on this with PayPal Credit, although I didn’t withdraw but I made a large purchase and zero impact to my credit score because I pay over the minimum balance every month. This is how credit card companies make their money. The guy should just make sure say he pays up every month and keep his utilisation of that card really low, like perhaps £5 monthly so that he can clear out his depts fast atleast within 3 - 5 months. He may not have to withdraw with PayPal, he can even call the school and give them his card details so that they can take the money.

NB: This is not financial advise but from personal experience.

Yes if your former employer is a Nigerian company. If foreign then you need to get a tax ID and report your earnings for self assessment.

So I’m trying to open a traditional bank account (banks with physical locations that I can go to).

In the “Are you tax resident outside the UK” , what do I answer to? “Yes/no” ?

I’ve never made a tax payment in Nigeria before. I just get paid my salary and that’s all 🫠; I also asked my previous employer if he had any tax history I could maybe use since my salary apparently came with tax deductions, he said no (this one ehn 💀).

Anyways, any responses would be appreciated. Thank you. 🙏🏾

Yea...my story was that someone ( a senior staff) defrauded my then IT company. They found out he was the one and then because he was close to the company owner, they covered it all and made us took the fall for it. We asked the Nigerian Police to investigate and we pleaded our innocence, but they wouldn't have it. They moved us to SARS where we were locked up for a lengthy period of time. It wasn't a pleasant experience. While in there, my dad was running around to see i was freed, they refused to charge the case to court, they didn't and my dad fell ill and passed away. I didn't see my dad when he passed and was buried. I slipped into depression and it impacted me greatly. Eventually we were released after 2yrs and i wasn't myself. Had to move to my village for awhile to get over the trauma and it took me time. I left the IT industry cos it reminded me of so much. That's my story. Starting a new life here in the Uk, i consider going back into IT, but where do i start ? How do i focus without triggering my past trauma.

That's why I'm kind of struggling. Yea, that's my story. But I'm trying to see how best i can find a way back in if I'll fight to. And thanks to all for the contribution.

Don't give up.

I do appreciate your input on this. It gladens my mind to read this. As you said, i shouldn't settle for less as a dependent as I can get a job that pays higher. My wife works in the NHS sector where she got her sponsorship and i honestly do not depend on her income as i see myself as someone that needs to take up his responsibility as a father and a husband. She being a good wife does not believe in that and does her best to support me and i do appreciate that. I have considered getting other roles, but i haven't been successful in them. Back in Nigeria I was a computer engineer but i left that industry when life and nigeria happened to me. I don't want to go into details cos it brings back sad memories. This was over 20yrs ago , so I'm a bit rusty and not up to date with current tech tools.

Now, i can only do little as we have to mind our child cos we don't look at taking him to a child minder. We can't afford that and we don't believe they can cater for him the way we can. We had to make sacrifices taking turns off work to do that. I'll consider looking at construction jobs as u said and if the pay is good and gives me some flexibility as i am getting now. Then its worth trying.

God bless you. May life not happen to us

Thanks for the clarification and I get a better understanding of your situation now. You can still wriggle your way back into IT by ups killing to become a data analyst, project manager or cybersecurity analyst while you shuffle between your current job and taking care of your baby all at your own pace.

You can also look into customer service advisor roles which allow work from home. Construction work may be lucrative but it will take you away from your baby and or leave you tired at the end of the day.

Choice is yours though but rest assured, I wish you the very best ahead 🙏🏾

adeolaspecial:

Hi, thanks for the response. My wife got sponsored by the NHS reason why she is stuck working as a support worker for them. I on the other hand need flexibility so as to enable us take turns in looking after our baby. This is my top priority. I thought i can cope with that with the little i earn, but cost of living isn't joking and i have to find a way to balance.

And like i said, my current job allows me flexibility to pick days when i want to work even though I'm working 40hrs full time with them and that can be adjusted on the rota. I don't know if other companies can be this generous to allow me do this (my fears) as this will greatly impact on child care (my priority). I would say for now, i don't have any special skills cos i left the IT industry due to some bad issues that happened back in Nigeria. If i have to start again, I'm afraid i might not be able to catch up. Reason why I'm seeking for advice on what other flexible roles i can look at. And as someone suggested, I'll look into Construction, but don't know if they will allow flexibility. God bless you
Travel / Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by bigtt76(f): 9:57am On Oct 25, 2023
Well said! As a dependent, picking shifts shouldn't have been your main priority but rather a full time role depending on your qualifications and skills, this would've helped you gain more grounds in whatever industry you find yourself. Your wife should also look at work from home customer service job opportunities.

Noticed you also have credit card debts - while it is good to have a credit card to help build your credit history, you shouldn't spend what you don't have on your debit card account (that's how I live my life though) at this stage when you don't have a good income.

My observation of late has been that most Nigerians (MA or dependents) on arrival in the UK, warehouse, support and care jobs appears to be their main target and this shouldn't be so at least for the dependents who can work full time. Try and evaluate your skills and qualifications, there are several opportunities out there that can help you upskill if you want for free.

Goke7:

Just take it easy, you are doing very well already including your wife and I commend you for being resilient so far. There is nothing wrong with you as the challenge is just to earn more to keep up with costs. Now how do you earn more? In your current discipline or sector, are there opportunities to switch to roles with higher pay? That is what you should be considering now. Do you have other skills or experience that can land you better jobs or you may need to upskill to get such roles. That should be the focus now while you still see other areas you can adjust you current costs of living. Above all pay attention to your mental health and your family as you're not the only one in this struggle, you will be fine as you restrategize and please feel free to ask more questions here about getting better roles with better pay, that's why we are all here. Cheers

adeolaspecial:
Hi guys, please i need your input in this. First of all, i apologize for my lengthy post. I moved into the uk last year april as a student dependent, i started working in may and have been earning a minimum a minimum wage with over time and the littlest i earned is 1900 including over time which enabled me clear my wife's fees and pay some bills added with the little she earned working 20hrs. In the long run she got pregnant and went on maternity leave a month before we welcome our baby in December.

She was on maternity leave, earning maternity pay which supports me while i go full blast working overtime with same earnings not more than 1900. She went back to work in August and now on 37.5hrs full time as she has finished doing her masters.

Now with the responsibility of catering for our child who is now 10months, we had to adjust with our work patterns (Thank God for giving me an understanding manager and hers too) by picking shifts when we like to help us on who stays home with the baby while the other go to work. I had to let go working overtime as i work on days when she's not working and she works on days when I'm not working.

This has really impacted on my earnings and pay as i now earn the basic pay of 1800, and with tax, ni and pension deducted i am left with about 1600 sometimes lower if i don't work night shifts as we earn enhancement working night shifts. My wife is very supportive as we split montly bills, spendings and all ( I know that this should even make it easier as she earns more now) , but the issue is lately the cost of living has gone up, our rent was increased, energy bill has gone up as we had to sometime put on the heater cos of the baby, his feeding, clothing and all his needs.

The bills are choking and i can even hardly save. My wife on the other hand contributes her quota on a 60/40 basis as i contribte the most as the olori ebi even though we earn same salary monthly. I have racked in credit card debts and all. I have had to cut down alot of spendings to adjust ( and that includes me not buying orijin bitters or going out with friends, going to the barber, i cut my hair anyhow i sabi, and some needs....lol). What can i do in this context as i am considering getting a new job that can pay more on same hours, but I don't know if the manager will be as understanding as the current manager i work with.

I need to earn more. I am considering investments, but don't know which or how i can get into one. Its eating me and i had to pour out my heart. I'm sorry for the lengthy write up. By the way, i work as a support worker and my wife as well as she got sponsorship and I'm a dependent. But we just can't do more hours cos of our baby.

I am considering remote works, but concentration is much needed in this and our baby is always seeking attention. How do one cope in this. Is 1600 earning considered good in such situations?
