for me
sometimes i use only spoon-library for simple projects.
while Yii FW for complex projects

why should we insult each other,
the poster simply said there are " no programmer in narialand".
my Answer is : "that is your opinion so simply go and find programmers else where." Period.

BTW, I get clients asking for SSL or dedicated IP allocation for their shared hosting account and in my head I just wonder. I still have to politely tell them how its not logical to have SSL (which requires a dedi IP) on a shared server and how it doesnt make much sense to put anything that secured on a shared account. . . VPSes are the way forward for those.

i recently found out that is cheater to have your own vps than putting different apps on little shared hosting packages.
one of the benefit is centralization of all clients apps another is that when u install extensions that optimize application and user bandwidth your small client can have the bonus and we promote your company consciously or sub-consciously

APC doesn't come bundled with PHP so this may not work well for dudes on shared hosting if their hosts don't already have this installed or r not willing to have it installed.

You don't need a server upgrade. If you have root access to the server you can either follow the APC suggestion above or increase the max_connection.

I have a question though. The default value is 150 (+1 for super users). So in a scenario where 300 people visit my web application all within the same period of time and are making extensive use of it. . . I will get this error at some point where all the 150 connections are in use? #stupidQuestion

i know that APC is not part of the core PHP package and that is why i referred to the zwamp server(for testing purpose).
the solutions is for VPS.
if in any situation you have a critical application then shared hosting is not a good option to you.
a quick solution is to use php sessions too.

Yii has a reputation for bad documentation.

this was the same thing i said to myself when i saw about to jump into yii from zend FW,cakephp. but i found a very good tutorials online that made the break through.

I will personally recommend "php routing after rewriting all request to index.php", because you simply know the rules and is server independent.

in today's PHP development i see that advanced programming do well with OOP and MVC is one of the structures that saw indirectly gotten from OOP(as a means to efficiently manage large projects of thousand of php files), secondly php namespace is another BIG PLUS to "the elephant"
in the next few years i think procedural method will only be used in very small project because of its poor project structure and possibly beginners.

I don't understand something about this thread. The title says "Creating a new face for NL".  and as interesting as the posts are so far, I can't really get why you all jumped into conclusion that something had to be done to it from back-end. talking about Cms, framework, and stuffs. The first point of call in any redesign is to ask "What exactly is wrong with the current system?". That's the problem and as designers/developers, what we do is solve problems. So, we have identify what is it that Nairaland lacks and (or) needs to remove and so on.

I'm not a back-end developer or a web Security expert. But I know Nairaland had issues with the Spambot stuff and that i guess has been relatively resolved. In my own opinion and as the thread title suggests, what Nairaland needs is a refined "Face". The issue it needs to resolve is more in the front-end than the backend. the layout of nairaland is still built using "Tables" which is so 1999. though, this has not in any way affected its performance but getting better is never a bad idea and using TABLES has no excuse these days. Also, in terms of information architecture, Nairaland needs to be structured in such a way that things are placed in the right places and ordered in the right manner. For instance, USERS' birthday needs to be structured in a way that people would actually want to be interested in greeting others when its their date (this gesture/interaction might not sound necessary but it is very important on a site that thrives on user-generated contents. it makes it come alive more!!!!). Also and very importantly, the search button has no reason to be at the bottom. It absolutely has no excuse for that. this and a lot needs to be dotted out before talking about the solutions.

i agree with you. but some for these changes must need some back-end modification to achieve best performance (ajaxifying some parts) , i can remember one of my intranet web projects that i continue to add snippets of codes again and again and eventually the code became like a 100miles round-about which was not too good in performance and code maintenance even though the goods where achieved.

you possibly have an endless loop in your website so when 3 or more visitor ask for that page it generate loop that the your RAM alocation is just exhorted. web4africa are good but when i come to costumer support they are ZERO behind the decimal point.
they dont have very good developers among them to solve issue like this.

dont forget to have an SVN backup of your whole production site and a security lock of your domain in case of trojan and worm attacks or possible siezure of your domain name if no security.

javascript is the best for you for now but Javascript can be time consuming i will wish you jump into any one of these javascript libraries,
they make the learning curve for javascript much easier. and javascript implementation a blink of an eye.
