Business / 5 Successful Male Entrepreneurs In Nigeria That Inspire Me - Zika Nwaise by BISolutionsng: 10:20am On Aug 16, 2016
Last week, we had a session for the ladies in the house and this beautiful week, we have come up with something for the guys. I hope you all enjoy and learn from this.

1. Ohimai Atafo
The Fashion designer known as Mai Atafo, is one of the forces to reckon with in the Nigerian fashion industry today. The celebrity designer started his career life in different corporate organizations including Guinness Nigeria where he started his bespoke clothing label; Mai Atafo Inspired that gained media acclamation by a pioneering clientele of mostly celebrities, He was also a Fashion Editor for Genevieve Magazine, for a brief period.
Mai Atafo has inspired me a lot in the sense that he knew what he wanted to be and he did not let anything get in the way of that. He worked in the fashion industry for a while and also trained himself in a fashion school before he started up.

2. Seun Osewa
The Nigerian internet entrepreneur is the founder of the most visited indigenous website in Nigeria. Nairaland was launched in March 2005. The cyber guru started various business projects that failed before the one that became Nairaland. He also had blogs and a mobile phone forum that preceded Nairaland that were successful but not profitable. However, Nairaland came to be on that foundation and was not only successful but profitable even beyond his expectation.
I have been inspired by Seun Osewa to dream big, keep trying and never give up

3. Abasiama Idaresit
The Nigeria-born technology entrepreneur is the founder and CEO of Wild Fusion, one of Africa’s leading digital marketing agencies with offices in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. He studied Information Systems & Management in the UK at the London School of Economics, and got an MBA from the Manchester Business School after which he decided to come back home with a zeal to use the internet to transform the local business environment in the country and this prompted him to start a digital marketing firm in 2008 but after several months, the challenges of a start up slowly began to hit him hard as people turned him away from their offices until he got a job with Baby M where he was given an opportunity to showcase his marketing skills and the results recorded were off the chart, that was the starting point for him. He then incorporated Wild Fusion and has been advocating, building and funding to drive early adoption of technology among African businesses. Iderasit has taught me to always believe in my dreams and never give up.

4. Jason Njoku
The British-born Nigerian entrepreneur is a film magnate and African start-up investor. He is the co-founder and CEO of iROKOtv, one of the early online video streaming platforms for Nigerian movies also known as Nollywood. Njoku got his inspiration from his mother whilst living with her. He discovered she had changed her television viewing habit from the usual British soaps to Nollywood movies. Jason Njoku had made several attempts into starting a business but was not successful, iROKOtv happens to be Njoku’s 11th attempt at starting a business. He has inspired me to believe that it’s never too late to try again.

5. Bayo Omoboriowo
He is the official photographer of the president and a graduate of University of Lagos. While Omoboriowo was in school, he would starve himself just so he could buy a camera because he had a passion for taking pictures. He started out in photography taking the pictures of just about every wedding ceremony, naming ceremony and graduation he could find but at some point, it dawned on him that all of that wasn’t the genre of photography he was cut out for so he decided to be a wedding photographer but that too was proving very challenging so he decided again to become a documentary photographer but after some time, Omoboriowo got bored of that as well and gave up the documentary photography gig. During the last electioneering campaigns, he attended the last All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election/convention, uninvited. He had no accreditation to take pictures of the biggest political event in the country at the time but that decision was his breakthrough moment. He began sharing pictures from the convention on all other social media platforms and that was how he was located by the President. Bayo’s story is one that has inspired me to always aspire, and believe in myself and to also do things excellently.

Wow! Such inspiring stories. For more of this, Stay tuned to biempowerment.com and watch out for what is coming up next.

Career / Six Unique Facts Of Integrity by BISolutionsng: 12:01pm On Aug 12, 2016
One day, a friend said to me… “Let us write 8:00am on the attendance register, no one will know”. But I thought about it, and decided to write the exact time I got there which was about 8:30am. Unfortunately, there was a major issue in the office and those who got to the office between 8:00 – 8:15am were being interrogated. I just smiled.
Sometimes, we think it’s better to go the easy way, but it’s not always profitable. The single most important quality you can ever develop that will improve every area of your life is Integrity.

Integrity is the foundation of a good character. Integrity is honesty, and to be honest with others means you have to be honest with yourself.

Here are some reasons on why Integrity should be a core value for you.

1. It makes you stand out: People tend to depend on you when you are a man of your word in an environment where being straight forward is scarce.

2. It makes you successful: People of integrity are honest people and honest people are people who do things right. Doing the right things would take you far as it creates a good reputation for you and your business.

3. It makes you a good leader : People want to follow only those who can lead them right by making the right decisions and taking them in the right directions.

4. It makes you decisive: Only people of integrity can take decisions against all odds. You can count on them to make decisions without being swayed by any form of pressure or influence from peers.

5. It makes you trustworthy: People can trust you and this helps you build long lasting relationships.

6. It causes continuity in relationships: People keep coming back to you especially if you are in business – just because you can be trusted.

Jobs/Vacancies / Beginner Mistakes To Avoid In Choosing A Career by BISolutionsng: 11:11am On Aug 11, 2016
A lot of young people end up with the wrong career for different reasons and they find out that they are very unhappy but stuck in that career. For the lucky few who can get out, they have to start building another career from scratch after losing valuable time. I have outlined 6 beginner mistakes in choosing a career so that you can avoid that pitfall.

1. Yielding to Family Influence: A lot of parents these days, especially in Africa, box their children into a corner and would not let them express themselves. A lot of parents want their children in 'prestigious' career paths such as the legal and medical profession, but the question is "Will you be happy living your life as a lawyer? Or a doctor?" Please do not be influenced by your family.

2. Caving to Peer Pressure: ‘All my friends are going into this profession, I would also like to do it’. Will it make you happy?

3. Allowing the Poor University structure chart your course: Here in Nigeria, a lot of students are forced into the only courses that are available in their universities. It’s more about availability and less or none of passion.

4. Seeking Money: A lot of us are driven by the financial reward in a certain career path, and are not thinking about who you are, your passion and your values.

5. Lack of Direction: I was talking to someone some time ago, and I asked him about building a career. He said to me “I don’t really care, as long as I can make a living out of it” This is extremely dangerous and can set you off on the wrong foundation.

6. Wallowing in Low Self Esteem: Some people do not believe in themselves and this has really affected a lot of career decisions. The feeling that “I cannot!”, “He is better than me!”, “Can I ever be great?”

It is very important that a lifelong decision such as choosing a career should be done carefully, without any pressure, influence or restrictions. I have attached a link on 'how to choose a career you love and you may never have to work a day in your life again'.

Jobs/Vacancies / What Are The Best Answers For "Why Should I Hire You"? by BISolutionsng: 1:52pm On Aug 10, 2016
Most people will answer this question by talking about their experience or education, and add descriptions like 'hard-working, loyal, team-leader, etc.' THIS IS WRONG.

You should always answer with what you will do to improve the company. What ideas do you have that will make life better for your interviewer? Lead with that.

Why? Because you are selling yourself (don't take that the wrong way) and you want to use proven and effective sales/copywriting strategies to do that. I have been studying copywriting lately, and one of the number one rules of copywriting is that you ALWAYS talk about benefits before features.

In this situation, what you will do to make this company better, and to make life better for the person interviewing you, is a benefit to them.

Your background/experience/education are just features that support your benefit to the company. Features may have gotten you in the door for the interview, but benefits will get you the job.

Your benefit to the company is what will get you hired. Therefore, always answer this question with benefits first, followed by features only if relevant.

For clarity, here is a list of benefits vs. features for a job interview.

Benefits:
I will immerse myself into your software's code to debug and fix all redundancies, which will make your product run much smoother.
I will improve the process of scheduling staff by implementing web-based scheduling software, making it easier to input times and allow for staff and management to be notified of shift changes right away.
I have ideas for crafting a new marketing message that will more effectively tell the story of why this company is great and compel people to buy your products.
Features:
I will bring with me my years of experience managing teams and working with people of diverse backgrounds, making me a great leader and team builder.
I studied back-end java development on my own for years, so I know exactly what is going on with your code.
In my last position, I managed my own team within the marketing department, so I know what it's like to collaborate with others and lead a marketing campaign.

The trend you should be seeing here is that benefits are what you are going to do to make life better for the person/company who is interviewing you, and features are what in your past experience makes you qualified for the role.

It is very easy to rely on your previous qualifications only when interviewing for a new position, don't. Stand out by giving them benefits, which are real reasons to hire you, and if you can make those benefits better than everyone else interviewing, you will get the job.

Business / 14 Success Tips For Young And Aspiring Entrepreneurs by BISolutionsng: 12:33pm On Aug 05, 2016
A must read for aspiring Entrepreneurs!!!
While growing up, I realized that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I did research on successful entrepreneurs who were in my line of business and I began to learn from them. I watched them closely; attended meetings where I could hear them speak. For those who had authored books, I tried as much as possible to read and learn from them. No one can know it all, we all learn from other people, especially people who have gone ahead of us.
Here are a few tips I learnt from my mentors that have been of great help in my entrepreneurship journey.
1. Push yourself – Keep learning. Try things you have never tried before.
2. Ensure that your business is your passion – Do work that you totally believe in and would do for free.
3. Get over your fears and just do it– You can never really know the outcome until you try it.
4. Be positive – Always believe that if you can think it, you can do it. Click here to read more on if you can think it you can do it
5. Have a vision – Ensure your vision is clear, written out and pursued.
6. Focus – Avoid distractions. They just may totally take you away from your vision and get you lost.
7. Stick with people you aspire to be like – Research them, study them, find opportunities to spend time with them.
8. Be action oriented– The world is full of great ideas, but success happens only though actions.
9. Build a great team – No man can live in isolation, even the lone ranger has a horse. Recruit for character and values other than competence, because you cannot teach character, but you can always train someone to be competent.
10. Plan to raise capital.
11. Set goals and be focused- Ensure your goals are SMART, Specific, Measurable, achievable, Realistic and Time bound.
12. Identify your market, industry and your competitors - This is very important, it will help you benchmark and strategize to work differently and succeed
13. Always seek for feedback – Feedback is important, be it negative or positive. This can guide you on how to do things better in future. Positive feedback can be motivating and would also encourage you to do more next time.
14. You are only as good as your last job - Ensure you do your work excellently; one bad job can spoil the other good ones.
Have you learned a thing or two or would you like to share a lesson you also have learned from a mentor or on the job with us? We will be happy to know.
Thank you for reading.

Jobs/Vacancies / Standing Out In The Workplace – Tokunbo Fasoro by BISolutionsng: 2:55pm On Jul 28, 2016
We have a lot of universities churning out graduates every year, the numbers of universities are increasing, the first class and second class upper recipients are increasing and employers are downsizing due to the economic situation in the country. These days, if they were to keep one person, or there is an opportunity for only a few people out of the whole group, what makes you stand out from the crowd? What makes you different or better than the other employees? Why should the organization keep you?

Here are a few qualities you need to possess to stand out in workplace;

Integrity:The organization should be able to trust you, believing that you will not exploit the organization. They should know you as possessing high moral standards.
Being Responsible: When you feel personally responsible for her job performance, you get to work early, practice proper time management and meet your deadlines.
Excellence: Most employees do not pay attention to quality and excellence, but employees with strong work ethics care about the quality of their work. They do their best to constantly produce a great piece of work. If all employees can work excellently, the organization’s productivity will improve.
Discipline and Dedication: A disciplined employee stays focused on his goals and he is determined to meet his targets. They show a high level of dedication and this sets them apart in the workplace.
Team working ability: Even the lone ranger had a horse; no man can live in isolation. An employee with a high sense of teamwork helps a team meet its goals and deliver quality work. Avoid using the word “I” as much as possible, stick to the “We” word and act it.
Professionalism: Being professional involves everything, from how you dress to how you speak and comport yourself in the workplace. You are addressed the way you dress, the way you carry yourself and what you say.
Accountability: Take responsibility for your actions. Avoid shifting blames, but accept the consequences for your own actions. You should learn to admit your mistakes and use them as learning experiences.
Reliability: Being able to keep promises;people should be able to bank on your words. They should trust that if no one comes through on a promise, you will. That is an excellent skill to possess not only in the work place, but every single place you find yourself.
We trust that our BIE readers will work at standing out in their organizations.

Thank you for reading. Please share if you have been inspired.

Jobs/Vacancies / Working Your Way Into Career Success – Tokunbo Fasoro by BISolutionsng: 2:46pm On Jul 27, 2016
A lot of us make mistakes in our career choices because we do not plan. We assume that our grades can get us to our target careers. I was speaking with a group of students in a University in Lagos about how we have so many second class upper and first class candidates these days. In my own days, a whole department might just produce one second class upper and no first class student at all! Lol! On a serious note, this simply means that there is a lot of competition out there. The question is“What makes you stand out from the crowd?”

This question led to my developing the acronym DPA, i would like to share with BIE readers today. Follow these steps and you will have a great chance at career success.

Discover

Prepare

Act

Discover: Know yourself –“Who am I? What are my likes? What am I passionate about? Where do I see myself happy in the next 10 years?” A lot of people are miserable and stuck in the wrong careers just because they failed to take time to discover, who they really are.

Prepare: Match those abilities, passion and who you are with a particular career. Afterwards, begin to prepare towards fulfilling the criteria required to fit that role. Read, acquire certifications, and research extra degrees or other qualificationsyou need to qualify you for that desired career. Set goals, write them down and ensure that they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound). You also need to acquire other soft skills such as time management, project management, communication, team working etc.

Act: Its time to put your goals into action. It is important to note that employers don’t usually have the time to teach anyone, they just want people to flow into workplace without any stress. Thus, the onus is on you to train yourself pre-employment in order to gain that experience. Go and intern, do vacation jobs, offer volunteer services and gain that necessary experience. Always seek out opportunities for training. Fortunately, there are a lot of free trainings out there. There are websites with relevant content and sites where you can see opportunities which can help boost your career prospects.

If you have not served (NYSC) or you are currently serving in Nigeria, go and make a mark in your place of primary assignment. Identify a problem and find a solution you will be remembered for. Don’t just waste that one year thinking it is just a waste of time.

“Wherever you are, go out there, make a difference and work your way into career success “

Jobs/Vacancies / You May Be Facing An Interview Panel Without You Knowing by BISolutionsng: 2:08pm On Jun 29, 2016
An important principle of success in all walks of life and in all occupations is a willingness to ” Go The Extra Mile “; which means the rendering of more and better service than that for which one is paid, and giving it in a positive mental attitude. Search wherever you will for a single sound argument against this principle and you will not find it, nor will you find a single instance of enduring success, which was not attained in part by its application.

We would love to share a story with you and we hope you will in some small way benefit from this story…

Sometime last year, I was working as a barber somewhere on the Island. It was a hectic Friday and at 5:55 pm (5 minutes before closing), this man walked in.

I told him that we already closed (shame on me). He said that he had to fly out that evening for a meeting tomorrow morning in Abuja, and he needed his hair done (his hair was a whole lot of mess), and our shop was the only place that was still opened. My colleagues were already “cutting eye for me” from the back, they all wanted to go home. I said with a smile, “I will do it”, then I asked my colleagues to go home and told them I would close the shop by myself later.
After greeting the customer and figuring out what he wanted for his hair; I started working my magic. Then, he started to fall asleep on my chair. So I told him: “Sir, if you fall asleep on my chair, you would love your hair when you wake up (I was being sarcastic)”.
Him (smile): Sorry about that.
Me: I hope you get paid enough to work that hard (he looked like he could use some rest).
Him: Oh! it is just a crazy time at work right now. Companies are laying off a lot of people.
Me: I hope you don’t work in the finance industry, I hear they are downsizing.
He stared at me and said: I do work in finance, and yes, the industry is downsizing.
Me: Oh my! I graduated with a finance degree a couple of months ago but can’t find a job yet. Everywhere I go, they say they are not recruiting.
Then we talked about the economy and finance while I was making his hair. He then asked me, “Do you have any work experience in finance?”
Me: I am a CFA level 2 candidate now, sitting for the June exam. Real experience wise, I don’t have much. While I was in school, I taught extra finance classes for my classmates and those in lower levels, especially those struggling with the course just to raise some little cash. Does that count?
Him: CFA level 2? How?
Me: I passed the level 1 exam in December while I was in school and I am doing level 2 now.
Him: While working fulltime the entire time?
Me: Yup.
Him: How is your Excel?
Me: Not a guru yet but comfortable enough to learn what I don’t know pretty fast.
Him: Do you know anything about Performance Analysts?
Me: Umhmmm, yeah. Let’s say, here is the philosophy: “We need to know where we have been, in order to figure out where we will go”. The performance analyst takes care of the first part of that philosophy.
Then, we talked a bit more about my school and things going on in the economy. After which he gave me a #1000 tip for his hair service.
After that, l locked the door and started to close the register then I heard a knock on the door and I thought “Oh my! Is he coming back for a redo? Did I make a mess of his hair?”
I opened the door and he gave me his business card, then said: “You are hired! Send me your resume”.
That customer was an MD in one of the three largest banks in Nigeria. I sent him my resume and was later contacted by HR for a job interview.
I called him to thank him for the opportunity. He told me that he was impressed by my hard work, and he decided to “interview” me while I was making his hair (I did not even pay attention).

Are you willing to go the extra mile? We would love to hear your perspective. Please visit : http://biempowerment.com/2016/06/29/go-extra-mile/

2. He let positivity drive him. He would always repeat to himself while boxing… “I am the greatest”, “I am the greatest”. Saying it to your self gives you some form of inner strength.
3. The first time he lost, he took it with so much courage. Later that night, when he got back home, he began training to get back his position. He trained hard for 6 months, went back and got his title back. Never give up, always keep trying.
4. He always works so hard – “No pain No gain”. He got up early, trained late into the nights. He could skip for hours. He could prepare as long as 6 months before a fight. If you want something, you’ve got to work for it.
5. He broke his jaw on the 2nd round in the match between him and Ken Norton yet he never gave up. With so much pain he continued to fight until he got to the last round. When asked why he continued the match, he said “Maybe because I did not believe Norton could beat me even with a broken jaw, or maybe because I never backed off from a fight” Not withstanding the challenges, never give up.
6. He was never afraid of a challenge- in fact he looked for it. There was a time he kept going on and on to push the heavy weight champion at that time for a fight. Look for challenging opportunities. Don’t be complacent.
7. He was a Strategist - After he lost his title to Norton in March 1973, Ali studied his technique and realized he always won every match within the first 7 rounds. In September 1973, when the match started, he let Norton hit him without him expending his energy on Norton until the 7th round. Ali said to him at the 8th round “Now it’s my turn”. By then Norton was already exhausted. With this strategy, he got his title back. A problem can sometimes push you into progress. Don’t feel bad about any bad situation, that situation may just take you out of your comfort zone. Think outside the box and that might get you that brilliant idea.
Mohammed Ali was a renowned boxer, born on the 17th of January 1942. He was widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sport’s figures of the 20th century and was awarded with about 15 awards including the 3-time lineal heavyweight champion. In the year 1984, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s syndrome, which led to a gradual decline in his health until he died on the 3rd of June 2016. From early in his career, Ali was known as an inspiring, controversial and polarizing figure both inside and outside the ring.

Jobs/Vacancies / Resume Tips For Job And Career Fair by BISolutionsng: 4:38pm On Jun 27, 2016
Whether you're a recent graduate seeking your first position or an experienced professional in search of a new opportunity, attending job and career fairs is one way to network and find job leads. Job fairs allow you to meet HR managers from various companies and industries, all housed under one roof for the day. These tips will help you make the best impression.

Research Job Fair Companies

It is usually possible to obtain a list of employers participating in a job fair ahead of time. The best-prepared candidates will have already spent time researching corporate cultures of the participating companies.

Develop Multiple Versions of Your Resume

After you've done your homework, tailor your resume based on your job objective, and consider bringing multiple versions to the career fair. Once candidates have done their research on participating companies, they can create a few different resumes targeting these companies. For example, someone interested in finance can research typical job titles and types of responsibilities and then create several different versions accordingly. They also might create one resume targeted to working for banks and another one tailored to working for the finance division of a large firm.

You should also prepare a general resume without a specific objective. This way, candidates can be prepared for any situation at a job fair by keeping their options open and having multiple resume versions ready to go.

Bring Supporting Documents

Additional documents that could help support your qualifications will depend on your industry and career goals, but they may include a cover letter, professional portfolio, transcripts (usually for new graduates), reference list, letters of recommendation and job applications.

Note: supporting documents aren't as important as your resume, and some HR managers won't be interested in dealing with the extra paperwork.

Follow Up

Request a business card from each HR manager, and jot down a few notes immediately after each conversation, this will help refresh your memory when you follow up. Email a thank-you note within 24 hours of the job fair.

We also recommend that after you meet with an HR manager and learn more about specific positions, alter your resume and send an updated, customized version to the HR manager.

Career / The Power Of A Dream by BISolutionsng: 3:54pm On Jun 25, 2016
I read a book titled the “Nigeria of my dream” written by Sam Adeyemi (Who actually is one of my mentors) While reading, I came across some inspiring and powerful quotes on ‘The power of dreaming” I thought to share with our BIE Readers. This could change a readers mindset forever.

“There is nothing that man has created that did not exist first as a mental picture in picture in somebody’s mind”

“A leader sees farther and further than anybody else. He or she has the capacity to see things, not just the way they are but the way they could be”

“This world would never move forward without those who can see glory in the midst of shame”

“The moment a dream or a vision takes shape in your heart, the resources needed to make that vision a reality begins to flow towards you”

“A dream inspires you to be persistent and to try again when you experience temporary setbacks”

“What you believe is what you become”

“What stops us from succeeding most of the time is not what we think we are but what we think we are not”

Someone start dreaming! It actually all starts with a dream.

Jobs/Vacancies / 7 Things To Avoid Wearing For A Job Interview by BISolutionsng: 5:10pm On Jun 23, 2016
Avoid wearing tight clothing:
It might not only give the wrong impression, it may also be distracting. The interviewer should focus on your skills not your figure.

Short Clothes:
Some interviewees wear really short clothes and it is obvious they are even uncomfortable. For an interviewer with morals, you have practically failed the interview without even saying a word.

Avoid wearing overly casual clothes:
Do not wear jeans, tennis shoes, shorts, T-shirts, hats, flip flops, sandals and flat shoes (Ladies). Ladies, wearing heels helps your posture. A good posture not only gives an air of confidence it makes you look smart and professional. Garments with messages written on them are a definite NO! NO! Avoid wearing obnoxiously colored suits such as yellow and red for the men, busy printed shirts or overly patterned ties (except you are interviewing as a clown of course!). It sums you up as unserious and can be very distracting for the interviewer. Save the fun till after you have got the job.

Anything Distracting:
Women should avoid exposing their cleavage or anything too revealing. No brightly colored dresses, make up should be minimal. Dresses with sleeves are preferable to sleeveless clothes. Both men and women should choose subtle and conservative clothes. It’s a good idea to stick to the basics which are black, blue and grey. You should be the focus of your interview not your clothing.

Excessive Accessories:
Avoid noisy bangles and jewelry that are elaborate. You can save your very powerful perfume for later, keep it mild; the interviewer may be allergic.

Avoid anything that would make you smell:
Never attend interviews with smelly, sweat stained or ill-fitting clothes. Ensure that you do not walk to your interview venue. Chances that you will sweat and that your sweat will smell are high. Some people come into a room and the smell that diffuses into the environment will almost make you pass out. Remember to always use a deodorant because some of us don’t even know we smell. Do not eat seafood, peanuts or any food with a strong smell as this will give you a bad breath when conversing with the interviewer.

Avoid looking weird:
Avoid ridiculously looking pointy or chapped nails, shouting make-up or hair do with different colors and contrasting colored socks for men.

Career / Tolani Eniola Shares Her Story On Building A Career In HR With Biempowerment by BISolutionsng: 3:45pm On Jun 23, 2016
Tolani is a successful HR practitioner. She has a special place in our heart at Bi solutions Nigeria and she is a wonderful supporter of the BI Empowerment’s vision of empowering the youths. She is pretty, sweet and fun to be with. The BI Empowerment Team is happy to have her inspire young and aspiring HR Consultants.

“We are in the house with this great inspiration. Thank you Tolani for saying yes to this interview”.

“Can we know you, and can you tell us a little bit about your educational background”?
Response: “My name is Tolani Eniola and I currently work as the Human Resources Associate for Chicken Republic; a brand of Food Concepts Plc. My first degree was a B.sc in Sociology from Bowen University, Iwo. Afterwards I was posted to Osun State for the compulsory one year national service to this great nation. I also attended the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom and graduated with an M.sc in Human Resources Management.

I am always on the quest for more knowledge, and I currently have two professional qualifications – CIPD (UK) & PHRI (USA).

I still have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge; and aspire to acquire more qualifications”.

“When did you realize you wanted to practice HR?”
Response: “I have always been fascinated by all things relating to people. Be it socialising, managing people or dispute resolution, I got my ‘aha!’ moment when I first heard about the course ‘Human Resource Management’ during my final year at Bowen University. I was discussing with my close friend, Debola on the next step to take after graduating from University. She encouraged me to study to Human Resources as it astronomically in demand in the labour market. She also said it will boost my employability.

Subsequently, I did my research and felt the course fitted my profile and passion, so I was determined to pursue a postgraduate degree on the subject. I got my degree in HR management and haven’t looked back since”.

“Can you just share with us a little bit on how you started out and what made you focused?”
Response: “Like I mentioned earlier, I have always had a passion for HR related issues and during my sojourn in the UK to bag my postgraduate degree, I volunteered to offer HR services to my local church in UK which included the processes of recruitment and selection.

Also when I was in the University of Birmingham, most of my friends were also studying HR management. This helped in a lot of ways in terms of having a great support system.

After I got my HR degree, I worked with different Banks such as Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland, and The Co-operative Bank. I earned good money but was unfulfilled career wise because my job function was not HR related. I never lost my focus and kept hunting for HR jobs till I finally got an HR job in Sainsbury’s HR Shared Service, Manchester. This tremendously helped me in terms of acquiring knowledge and the much needed ‘work experience’ when I came back home to Nigeria. Although, the salary I earned in Sainsbury was much lower than what I earned in the bank; I must emphasize that this was a big career decision I made along the way. In hindsight, it was a good one because I found it rewarding and fulfilling”.

“Can you share with us some of your challenges in building a career in HR? Did you at any point feel like giving up?”
Response: “When I graduated from University of Birmingham, it was quite difficult to get an HR job in the UK. I went from one Recruitment Agency to another, seeking HR jobs but I always got the same feedback, “You have the HR qualification but unfortunately you don’t have HR experience”. Unlike Nigeria, experience is very crucial in the UK workplace.

Eventually, I had to settle for a banking job but I was not fulfilled. I need to stress that I never gave up but kept pressing on till I got an offer with Sainsbury’s HR Shared Service to work as an HR Advisor”.....

Career / It Is Okay To Be Different – Stanley Awelewa by BISolutionsng: 2:13pm On Jun 22, 2016
Being different is totally okay, in fact it is not just okay, it is essential and what makes you who you are. Sometime people are intimidated by the fact that you are different, but the people who really matter will love you for your unique personality.
Some years back during my undergraduate days in the university, I woke up one night trying to decipher what makes some people innovators, trend setters and every other person. I discovered that the innovators are all different and they see the world differently and basically obsessed with a passion of taking the world from as it is to how it should be.
The innovators and trend setters are always way ahead of their peers and contemporaries, they think differently, think ahead and there by creating a trend for others to follow. At first they are usually criticized by shallow and ignorant minds who try to tear them down with negative comments and remarks and try to be stumbling blocks in the wheel of progress. They are mostly Naysayers who never see anything good in a progressive and creative idea and they always come up with a thousand and one reasons why an idea will not work.
But I tell you stay true to yourself and your uniqueness, sometimes your message is not for everyone and there is nothing wrong in being different and ahead of your peers, stay ahead and you may later create a trend for them to follow. I must warn you that it is not an easy road, but stay true to creating an inspiration, keep learning, keep growing and find your path. Growth is usually a process of leaving somethings behind, as you keep evolving you keep on knowing yourself. There are no shortcuts, find out what works for you. Know yourself before you present yourself, if you want to reach billions start from the first two.
Being different and talented will stand you out but remember that it may only take you to the pinnacle but only hard work and positive attitude will keep you there. As you ponder on what’s different and what stands you out and how you can use that uniqueness to create an impact in your life, company, organization and the world at large. I want to encourage you to stay true to your journey, make an impact, create positive change, innovate and make the world a better place. Do not shield your uniqueness to make others feel comfortable, the race is yours not theirs. I am different for a reason so are you.
Think of it like this, if Thomas Edison tried to be like everyone else, and never invented the light bulb as people did not think he was doing anything of importance as some try to put him down, but he did something great. He was himself and accomplished great things in life.
What will you accomplish trying to be like everyone else ? If people don’t agree with you probably they don’t understand. Honestly just do whatever makes you happy as long as you are not hurting yourself or others.

Jobs/Vacancies / Six Tips To Getting Your Dream Job by BISolutionsng: 4:59pm On Jun 20, 2016
As impossible as it may seem, especially in a country like Nigeria, if you can follow these tips, you would be amazed at what will happen!
1. Learn about yourself:
Understand who you are, your likes, your values and your strengths.
2. Research:
Find out about careers which match with your interests and your skill set. The next thing is to identify any additional skill set you need to take you in the direction you want to go, and then take active steps to build that skill or competence.
3. Don’t be discouraged by your lack of experience:
Every employer wants someone who is hands-on on the job; an employee they do not have to teach. This makes it difficult for someone who has no experience to get a job, but there is a way out. Volunteer or work for free! Make a sacrifice! Ignore the money (or lack of money) and go get that experience you need on your Curriculum Vitae.
4. Network:
Meet people, talk to people and attend free or paid seminars in relation to the field you are interested in. Take advantage of your network on social media and remember that a contact or someone in your network can know someone who can land you that dream job.
5. Start early:
Avoid going round in circles by staying in a job you are not happy with because you are afraid of the unknown. The truth is, you will waste so much time doing what you do not enjoy doing. Research and invest that time in what you really want to do, and you would have spent quality time in building your career.
6. Have realistic expectations:
Nothing good comes easy. To get a perfect job you need to always work at it. Every job has its ups and downs, some aspects we love and some we do not love. A popular saying is ‘Anything worth having in this world requires effort’. It has also been said, ‘No pain No Gain’. In other words, prepare to work relentlessly to ensure you get what you want.

Jobs/Vacancies / 7 Ways To Stay Motivated When You’re Looking For A Job by BISolutionsng: 2:51pm On Jun 14, 2016
The job search can be frustrating and draining, but here’s how to keep your spirits up and boost your chances of getting hired

The ability to get — and stay — motivated during a job hunt is one of the most critical skills for anyone looking for work. This is especially true today, when it takes considerably more time and energy to find employment than it did a decade ago.

1. Be realistic about the job-search time frame.

Brace yourself for the inevitable speed bumps of a job search. For example, don’t expect to land an interview within a week or two of starting your hunt.

2. Believe in yourself.

Like a successful salesperson, you must believe that what you’re selling has value. When looking for a job, you’re essentially selling yourself and your experience.

3. Take a project-management approach.

Break down the search process into a series of goals, spread out over time. For example, give yourself one week to draft a resume & cover letter. Other suggested milestones:

Within one month: Network face to face with 15 to 20 people who could help you find work.

Within three months: Secure three job interviews…etc

4. Evaluate your progress.

Take time out once a week to assess how your job search is going.

Ask yourself: What have I done? What haven’t I done? What’s working? What isn’t?

5. Keep your body, mind and soul healthy.

How you take care of yourself while job hunting can have a huge impact on your productivity in finding work. Make sure you eat well, exercise regularly and get enough sleep.

6. Learn how to handle rejection.

Getting turned down by prospective employers is tough.
The way to handle rejection is to look at it the way a successful salesperson does: It’s a numbers game where every “no” gets you one step closer to the “yes” you need.

7. Take time off.

Five hours of job hunting a day is draining. So step back from time to time to avoid burning out.
And try not to look for a job on weekends. That’s the time to enjoy yourself and to relax with the people you care most about.

We wish you all the best on your journey towards greatness.

Jobs/Vacancies / A Crime Called Idleness – Shola Victor Aluko by BISolutionsng: 2:03pm On Jun 14, 2016
Every morning in Africa a gazelle run faster than the fastest lion or it would die, also the lion tries every morning to outrun the fastest gazelle or it dies of hunger. We are experiencing these things because we live in difficult and perilous times, an era when nothing is achieved easily, a time when most people “hustle more than work”, pay more than they get paid. Most of us now wear frustrations on our faces instead of smiles. Citizens of planet earth now live an angry kind of life. A bank cashier once told a customer whose cheque just bounced to have a nice day, guess what the woman said. She replied vehemently saying “don’t tell me how to live my life”. That’s a true picture of the kind of world we are living in. At this juncture, close your eyes and take a deep sigh, ask yourself if it isn’t a crime to be idle in this world where workaholics don’t even get paid?

From the forgoing, one would see that the world is now a jungle where only the thinkers, the active, the fastest, and tenacious survive. From Bangkok to Paris, New York to Rio de Janeiro down to Kinshasa, and back to Abuja, you will vividly see that no safe haven anywhere. Things are getting harder everywhere, unemployment rate increasing globally like rat population, so if I were you, I will keep myself busy with something while I wait for that dream job. I will attend employability programs, trainings; I will learn a skill or two. The focal point is never stay idle. Engage your mind and hands, write a book or movie script, take a teaching job in a school. Don’t be frustrated on your bed or on your neighbors, channel that anger, that frustration on a skill you’ve acquired or yet to acquire.

At this jobless level of yours, do not join the group of people praying to God to add a day between Saturday and Sunday, such prayers are for the super rich. You’ve got to get out of that self pity couch and start improving the future. Learn to improve the future, by disturbing the present. I know it’s not easy, but the ‘it’s not easy’ kind of speech would not sound motivating to your unborn children when they start suffering the same fate.

Do not commit this crime unless you want to be sentenced to life imprisonment at the maximum prison of poverty.

Till we meet again on this platform, do not be better, be great.

Jobs/Vacancies / Choose A Job You Love And You Will Never Have To Work A Day In Your Life by BISolutionsng: 2:38pm On Jun 13, 2016
I remember fresh after service year, my friends and I were excited looking out for job opportunities. We just couldn't wait to dress corporately and begin to earn some big money........... so that we could go shopping. That was all we imagined. We had no career plan or professional path. Any job that could do this for us was good enough! In a couple of weeks, one of us got a marketing job and the pay was good. She could now dress corporately and of course she got a cute red car in addition. Boy, were we jealous! Sometime after she started work, I asked her if she was enjoying her job, and she said to me, "I don't enjoy the job, but the money is good and the car is cute". She added that all she wanted was to save up some money and move into the next job.

Unfortunately, by the time she wanted to move, all the offers she got were for marketing positions because that was all the work experience she had acquired.
She ended up changing jobs about 8 times within 10 years until she finally gave up to focus on learning professional makeup. I wish she had realized this 10 years ago, she probably would be competing with the top makeup artists in the country by now. Thank God it's never too late!

Statistics say “Over 70% of people do not enjoy their jobs”, some endure and live unhappy lives, but the only way you can avoid becoming part of the 70% is to do something you love. However before doing something you love, you must know what you like and dislike.

Here are a few questions you need to periodically ask yourself. Taking action on the honest responses can determine your positional happiness in the next 5 years, 10 years or even in the next 50 years.
Before you take a job, ask yourself,
1. "Does this job inspire me?”
2. “What am I passionate about?”
3. “Does this job align with me?” Consider your values and your personality.
4. “What are my strengths?” It's no secret that we excel at things we are good at.
5. “Does this job environment support me?” Some jobs involve travelling while some don't. Do you enjoy travelling? Some environments are purely entrepreneurial, some embrace diversity, some are extremely conservative etc. You need to determine which environment is right for you and you for it.
6. “Can I do it for free and be happy doing it?”
It's simply not worth it doing something you do not enjoy or you are not passionate about. Avoid ‘doing it’ because of the money. No matter how much money you are offered it simply will not end well. Before you accept a job, make sure that your passions, knowledge and experiences are aligned with the organization’s purpose and ambitions.

"Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for it" - Katharine Whitehorn

The BI Empowerment team would like to use this opportunity to congratulate the 2016 NYSC Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corp Members who will be heading to camp today.
First of all, we would want to correct a popular opinion that NYSC is a waste of time. It is not! The one year work experience is the most important part of your CV to we Human Resources Consultants and in building a career both as a career person or an entrepreneur.

We have a few nuggets for you
1. NYSC is the first work experience most graduates have, this is the time to prove that you are different from every other graduate. You need to work hard and stand out in your place of primary assignment.
2. Job responsibilities can be copied, we need you to get in there and achieve great things, initiate and Implement great Ideas that will make your CV stand out from others.
3. Do not go into a place and never leave a mark people can look back and say it was when this Corp member was here that he or she introduced this. A positive mark that will make people refer to you forever.
5. Aim at touching lives in any community you find yourself, you do not have to spend so much or get an award in your state, but you would have done something positive to a life that will forever live to remember you.
6. Take your work seriously and sincerely serve your country Nigeria, we all have a part to play in making Nigeria a great nation, it could be just an encouraging words to a student in that school in the village where you are teaching that says ” you can be who you want to be, just work hard at it” or “if you can think it you can do it”
‎that would change that child’s live forever and you have indeed served your country.
We have thousands of fresh graduates in competition with you in the Labour market.

Education / Free Seminar/workshop On Postgraduate Opportunities In Scandinavian Countries by BISolutionsng: 11:01am On Jun 13, 2016
Why Study in Norway?

Norwegian Universities provide quality education with a wide range of courses and flexibility. The Norwegian institutions prove to be an ideal study destination with plenty of opportunities for students to fulfill their ambitions. Majority of the international courses in Norway are taught in English language. Students are also exposed and offered a great opportunity to learn the Norwegian culture and language. In addition, the international ambience is second to none as compared to most European Universities. The teachers are easily approachable and tuition are relatively free. Most institutions are well equipped with computer facilities and free Internet access. Furthermore, studies can be combined with exciting outdoor activities both in the winter and summer. Student can explore the Aurora Borealis (“Northern lights”), experience the midnight sun, fjords and mountains. Skiing, white water rafting or climbing are great opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, clean water and lots and lots of space.
