When Should You Update Your Resume?

Most people don't think about updating their resumes until they find themselves out of work and in desperate need of a job.

Resumes have changed as more companies request electronic submissions instead of hard copies. Make sure your resume is structured in a way that ensures it's searchable in resume databases, includes a target job title and the skill keywords that you see in job descriptions.
A resume has to be visually accessible, because the recruiters first reading is in fact going to be just a six-second scan. Get all this keywords in the first half of the first page and repeat them throughout your work experience.

You can start to change the trajectory of your life as soon as you take control of your career, with the careful development of the tools and skills of the new career management; and that all starts with owning a resume that gets results.

A resume is the foundation of your brand and is your primary marketing tool. When your resume works the doors of opportunity open for you, when it doesn’t they don’t. Keep your resume current at all times because you never know when you will need it, for that next promotion or a new job.

Be contented with what you have. You've come a long way to quit now. You probably would fail a few times. Yes, I failed my first CBtest. Don't stop. Keep trying till you make it to the top. Trust me, you would get there.

Some Basic HR Interview Questions

Job interviews can be a stressful process and you need to be prepared for anything an interviewer throws at you.

You’re calm and relaxed, mentally ready for the challenge, and even looking forward to the chance to shine.

Use each interview as a learning experience and don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t go the way you had hoped.

1. Tell me about yourself?

Discuss 2-3 of your most significant accomplishments.

Talk about a few of your key strengths as they relate to the job for which you are applying and how they can benefit from your strengths.

Then discuss how you see yourself fitting into a position at their company.

2. Do you prefer working with others or alone?

Your response needs to show that you can work well in a team atmosphere and still shoulder individual responsibility, as well. Before you answer, make sure you know if the job requires you to work alone or not.

“I enjoy working alone when necessary as I don’t need to be constantly reassured of my work. But I would prefer to work in a group as I believe much more work can be accomplished when everyone is pulling together.”

Seriously, job hunting in Nigeria could be so tasking, disappointing and altogether frustrating. How can anyone explain to me a reason behind a circumstance where a prospective job seeker applied for a job, sent an invite for interview but was subsequently told that the recruitment into the position has been put on hold indefinitely. In addition, the company in question wished the applicant success in his job search and career.

This actually happened to me and I didn't find it funny at all. What could have been responsible for this?. The company involved here is a multinational company of good repute. Though they apologised for the inconveniences caused but I suspect something went wrong and I find it unconscionable to say the least.

Has this kind of scenario happened to anyone on this platform?. Please let me have your take on this. Thank you.

7 Ways to Stay Motivated When You’re Looking for a Job

The job search can be frustrating and draining, but here's how to keep your spirits up and boost your chances of getting hired

The ability to get — and stay — motivated during a job hunt is one of the most critical skills for anyone looking for work. This is especially true today, when it takes considerably more time and energy to find employment than it did a decade ago.

1. Be realistic about the job-search time frame.

Brace yourself for the inevitable speed bumps of a job search. For example, don’t expect to land an interview within a week or two of starting your hunt.

2. Believe in yourself.

Like a successful salesperson, you must believe that what you’re selling has value. When looking for a job, you're essentially selling yourself and your experience.

3. Take a project-management approach.

Break down the search process into a series of goals, spread out over time. For example, give yourself one week to draft a resume & cover letter. Other suggested milestones:

Within one month: Network face to face with 15 to 20 people who could help you find work.

Within three months: Secure three job interviews...etc

4. Evaluate your progress.

Take time out once a week to assess how your job search is going.

Ask yourself: What have I done? What haven’t I done? What’s working? What isn’t?

5. Keep your body, mind and soul healthy.

How you take care of yourself while job hunting can have a huge impact on your productivity in finding work. Make sure you eat well, exercise regularly and get enough sleep.

6. Learn how to handle rejection.

Getting turned down by prospective employers is tough.
The way to handle rejection is to look at it the way a successful salesperson does: It's a numbers game where every “no” gets you one step closer to the “yes” you need.

7. Take time off.

Five hours of job hunting a day is draining. So step back from time to time to avoid burning out.
And try not to look for a job on weekends. That’s the time to enjoy yourself and to relax with the people you care most about.

Ways To Apply for a Job Even When You Don't Meet the Requirements

Are you ready for one of the best-kept secrets of the job search process? Unless the person doing the hiring has previously worked in the exact role he’s trying to fill, a fair amount of the job description is guesswork.

Think about it: HR managers have to write a description that will simultaneously entice people to apply and ward off those who wouldn’t qualify for an interview. Also, haven’t you heard stories of a person who “met all of the qualifications” being passed over in the final stages for someone who “seemed like a better fit?” Probably so—because a company would much rather hire the candidate with two years of experience who seems like she could hit the ground running than someone with the requisite five years who failed to demonstrate strong communication skills.

So what’s a job seeker who doesn’t quite meet all the requirements in a position description to do?

Ask Yourself if You Could Do the Job

Notice that we didn’t suggest asking, “Do you want the job?” or even, “How much do you want the job?” Honestly, those questions are irrelevant. It doesn’t matter how passionate you are about working in a foreign language—if the job requires translating documents, and you’re only conversational, you’re not qualified. Similarly, it doesn’t matter how fascinating you find a company: You shouldn’t apply for a job running its website if you don’t have any of the technical skills required.

Instead, read through the job description and try to get a sense of what someone in the role would do each day. In your mind, break out “public relations experience” into writing press releases, pitching media, and representing a brand. Think of “writing experience” as the ability to write concisely, persuasively, and with proper grammar.

After you’ve worked through the job description in this way, you’ll have a more accurate sense of what you have to offer versus what skills you may be lacking.

If you’re interested in the advertised role and see yourself doing a great job, don’t let a few missing qualifications stop you from applying. You may not be selected for an interview; but you could also be the best person for the job, and applying is the only way you’ll know.

How To Answer: You don’t have enough experience — why should we hire you?

We are looking for someone with experience...or, You don’t have enough experience — why should we hire you?
If you’re a new graduate, or if you’re switching careers , you might get asked this question, especially early in the process, like in a phone interview. It is a challenge, but don’t let it freak you out. They are at least somewhat interested in you, or they wouldn’t have even bothered to talk to you at this point. So keep that in mind and maintain your confidence. They’re just a little concerned, but all you have to do is to sort of help them along in their thinking on this issue.

Turn the tables on them

Remind them that at one point, they didn’t have any experience either, and someone gave them a chance. Say something like, “Well, at some point, you didn’t have any experience either, when you were first starting out. And obviously, you’ve been very successful. Would you hire you again?”

At this point, they’ll be nodding their heads, remembering and agreeing with you — that’s always a good thing! This is a very logical thing to bring up, and it gives you a little bit of a psychological edge in the process.
