PhysicsQED: I doubt this. Why don't you just post the statistics for each country's military in 2002?
In 2002, Nigeria had probably a handful of alpha jets, non-existent Navy, and the army had old tanks lol. I don't know how you want to go to war with a French semi-colony with that. All your crusty Alpha Jets would be shot down within a day and then what? Your NNS Aradu would be destroyed and your Corvettes blown off by exocets missiles - and then what?

anonymous6: The don't trust each other because of its history with one another since the war(which is slowly dying down), which is understandable; but if corruption was capped and progression was equal, these issues between the tribes wouldn't be even argued about in the first place. Why do you think Muslim and Christians don't get along in northern Nigeria but they do in Lagos?
Northern Nigeria is different from Lagos - Lagos is Yorubaland, and Yoruba Muslims and Christians have been living together for e-ons. I'm half Muslim (Paternal side) and half-Christian(maternal side) - and I've a Muslim middle-name, but I'm 'Christian'. We celebrate both Muslim and Christian festivals in my family - that's how Yoruba people live their lives.

Forget it, the tribes in Nigeria will never get along.

onila: dey might be a little oil tongue but just miserable oil wells compare 2 Niger delta heaven of oil

u guys are parasite like your northern Nigerian brothers but a bit better than them
Don't turn this into a tribal debate - just know oil wealth didn't build Yorubaland.

Your oil money built Abuja and got your thieving politicians rich.

PhysicsQED: I don't know. I read where it was claimed that 50 were killed in multiple clashes, while the Cameroonian side didn't claim how many of their own were killed. But I doubt that Nigeria was the aggressor in any of these clashes - they would just be seen as a big bully if they sent out a real force to attack the Cameroonian soldiers.
Nigerian army back then was ill-equipped, and Cameroon would've smashed them and their alpha jets lol. I know they've got some new hardware, and maybe pull something off right now - but in 2002, there was no way they would've defeated Cameroon.

You lot claim you're Nigerians, yet you don't even know about the damn country smh.

Northern Nigeria also has alot of potential oil reserves, in the basins across the North. Sokoto, Yobe, and Bornu definitely should be oil producing areas, I kid you not. Middle Belt as well!
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:56am On Aug 24, 2012
onila: those miserable oil wells in Yoruba land grin

lagos will just be like sokoto without Niger delta oil
accept the fact
You're a kid!! undecided If you think there's no oil in Lagos, then, you need to get your head examined. Yoruba leaders are just playing politics with their region - they know there's oil there, but they're just hiding it for now.

anonymous6: No what is effecting Nigeria now is corruption and jobs, if Nigerian governments start taking care of their citizens by providing basic necessities, and giving jobs for the citizens to do something useful there wouldn't be any time for BOKO HARAM, and other nuisances in Nigeria. If Nigeria had did that these issues among the tribes wouldn't even come up because as much as yoruba and igbo you say have their disagreements here and there, it is minor because they don't let it interfere in them progressing. It is really Northern Nigeria that is a little bit the issue now because of literacy issues, and etc. They are not in the same pace as southern Nigeria and it is their leaders that have to blame for that. When you make people productive and educated, Boko Haram will be the last thing that will come into their minds.
The disagreement between the tribes isn't minor - they don't trust one another. Everyone aligns with their tribes before the country, and trust me, Nigeria will never be one. Boko Haram is just the new boogieman in town - before BH, they never trusted one another. Yoruba will always fight for Yoruba interest, Hausa'Fulani will always want to dominate, and Igbos will always think Yoruba owe them for what happened during the civil war.

PhysicsQED: I didn't deny that Ethiopia was strong in the past.

But on your claim about being humiliated, if Nigeria was so scared then, then why were they willing to send soldiers to the Cameroonian border all those previous times under Buhari, IBB, Abacha, etc? The claim that they were scared of Cameroon's military capability just doesn't make much sense to me.

edit: The only other factor I can think of is the military capability of the French. Maybe that would be relevant.
How many Nigerian soldiers were killed during the little confrontation they had in the 90s?
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:48am On Aug 24, 2012
You don't need to study geology to know that Lagos(the biggest sea line in Nigeria) has abundance of both offshore and onshore oil. Just take a look at the lagoon flowing into the Atlantic ocean - and all the creeks in Lagos lol..

Ogun state is another state with massive offshore and onshore potentials.
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:46am On Aug 24, 2012
onila: grin grin ROTFL!!!!

lagos will just be like sokoto without oil money grin so you Yoruba;s shldnt be feeling 2 funky

who will give a fuc.k about Lagos when Nigeria breaks away grin
Loool!! Lagos has been thriving hundreds of years before there was a country called; Nigeria - and it will continue to thrive.

And Lagos has abundance of oil - but they just don't want to touch it for now. Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry, Apapa, and Lagos Island/Ikoyi has almost the same topography as all the oil producing areas in Niger Delta - but they don't really care about exploring the oil for now.

Ogun state (Yewa and Ijebu regions) has abundance of oil as well.

I'm just laughing at you!! grin grin

PhysicsQED: So you think the government of Nigeria should employ the same kind of tactics against Boko haram that Ethiopia employed against al Shabaab?

Nigeria avoided a confrontation with Cameroon because the president at that time was a stooge to the West. It wasn't about military capability.

Anyway, I'm still not convinced about some kind of huge disparity in military capabilities between the Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. All three are probably nothing special.
It was because of that, it was because the President knew Nigeria would be humiliated by Cameroon. Nigerian Navy at that time was in a terrible state, and we an airforce that was almost non-existent. The President was smart to give them Bakassi, to avoid the the embarrassment a military confrontation would've caused.

By the way, my pops is a veteran of the Nigeria civil war - and he said the same thing at that time.

Ethiopia is a formidable country militarily, and they've been for a long time. Don't forget they once defeated the Italians - and Italy won the 2nd confrontation with the use of chemical and biological weapons.

onila: look @ the gdp and per capita of Nigeria and ethiopia-compare tongue

ethiopia

GDP per capita $1,100 PPP
GDP $31.71 Billion (2011)[1]

Nigeria
GDP-$235.92 Billion
GDP PER CPITA- $2,600 (2011 est.)
80% of Nigeria's GDP gets looted by your thieving politicians, and they stash it in foreign banks - so that crap is just for journals, CIA fact file, and wikipedia.. undecided

anonymous6: Nigeria had it's chance twice to split up, the first when they got their independence and secondly after the war and that didn't happen. it is to late for that and will end to war, and cause more harm then good because the north will not allow that to happen due to the fact of natural resources, and lastly Nigerians have invested alot all over Nigeria. What's effecting Nigeria now is corruption, accountability and jobs
What's affecting Nigeria is the forceful union of different people. I don't think there will ever be peace in Nigeria - Igbos and Yoruba will NEVER agree, and Hausa/Fulani will always want to dominate. The best solution is for everyone to go their separate ways, and maintain mutual friendship.

Do you think Yoruba people are happy about other people migrating to their region, and still calling them names for being accommodating?

Do you think the oil producing states are happy with sharing their oil revenue with everyone?
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:24am On Aug 24, 2012
PhysicsQED: I'm not sure this is a reasonable comparison. But anyways, has Ethiopia defeated al Shabaab? No.

And I'm not sure I buy the argument about Eritrea really being a militarily strong country. Maybe you should have said "relatively strong" compared to some others in the region.
Al Shabaab war isn't Ethiopia's war - that's America's war, but America just tried to use Ethiopia to fight its battle, after it was disgraced and chased out of Somalia. And Ethiopian army achieved alot of success in Ethiopia before, they pulled out of the country. Kenya is in-charge now.

Eritrea is militarily stronger than Taliban, and if America + NATO are having a problem with Taliban, then you can't fault Ethiopia against Eritrea.

Nigeria avoided a confrontation with little Cameroon lol. So, Nigerians should be talking when other people are talking. cool

Sierra Leone 40.9
Guinea 39.5
Ethiopia 35.9
Sierra Leone 35.1%
Chad 33.6
Burkina Faso 28.7
Niger 28.7
South Sudan 27.0
Mali 26.2
Somalia 24.0

anonymous6: ok, if that is what you think; this split up Nigeria talk is just talk to me
Splitting the country would be best thing to happen to Nigeria - and that's the only way we can move forward. But if we can't get that - we should get resource control, regional government, and limit migration around the country.
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:10am On Aug 24, 2012
anonymous6: Like I said before Nigeria isn't perfect but Ethiopia has alot of poverty and other issues effecting their country and to start comparing is ridiculous

so you can also say Ethiopia is a mess
Ethiopia has alot of poverty, just as Nigeria has alot of poverty. But Ethiopia is still light years ahead of Nigeria, when it comes to development, and direction.

Nigeria is in shambles!!

Your President don't even know what the fvck he's doing - he has no international policy, the finance minister is a retard from world bank, the CBN governor is a Ph.D holder in Islamic studies, petroleum minister has a BSc. in architecture lol, former militants are now in-charge of patrolling offshore oil resources etc.

Nigeria is a big pile of shyte!!

I love Nigeria but we need to get the veil off our eyes - and starting thinking outside of the box. Nigeria is a disgrace to black people!!

If Ethiopia had the luxury of having everything Nigeria is blessed with, they would be at the level Brazil is at right now.
CultureRe: Ethiopia-the Birth Of Nations-the Origin Of The Green, Yellow And Red Flag! by bittyend(m): 4:00am On Aug 24, 2012
PhysicsQED: Yeah, Nigeria's military is probably nothing special, but if Ethiopia couldn't defeat Eritrea, then how much better is their modern army really? They were strong in the past, but now. . .not so much.
And how did Nigeria fare against Boko Haram and MEND? Eritea is a strong country as well, and they've the luxury of sea access.

Even America with all its advance weapons still can't defeat bow and arrow using Taliban in Afghanistan lol.

anonymous6: Actually they can and they have, sorry.

So war is the way Ethiopia beats Nigeria, Is there a reason they have to be in a war in the first place?, both countries rarily engage with each other
I just added war to it. Ethiopia is ahead of Nigeria in terms of developments as well - Nigeria is just about hype.

No electricity, no jobs, no international policy, poverty everywhere - and outside Abuja, and probably Lagos, the whole country is a big slum. Just take a look at the only functional international airport in Nigeria (MMA), and compare it to the one in Addis Ababa - the difference is clear.

Nigeria is a mess!!

I'll play the devil's advocate and argue that Ethiopia is still light years ahead of Nigeria in terms of overall developments, and foresight. Nigeria is in shambles - no organisation, no planning - just 170million headless people with no future.

Ethiopia's military is far ahead of Nigeria's military despite our large population and GDP - and Ethiopian airline is the best airline in Africa.

Ethiopia is the Giant of 'sub-saharan' Africa (minus South Africa) - they lead and others(including Nigeria) follow their lead. cool
