Politics / Nchara, Bashr8 And Ichidodo Should Moderate This Section Not Afam4ever by bittyend(m): 6:11am On Mar 23, 2013
I noticed Afam4ever is now a mod in this section today.

Why Afam4ever and not Nchara, Bashr8 and Ichidodo?

These three posters are more qualifed for the position than Afam4ever. cheesy

Fair enough, it's un-African to talk bad about the dead. But to call that book the best book written by an African shows the lack of reading culture among Africans and the inability of African youths to differentiate between what a masterpiece is and what a jejune tale is.

Way to go the future of Africa. Maybe Africa has no future afterall with the quality of people it continues to produce in this day and age.

I bet 50 shades of grey is also a masterpiece to most African youths loool.

Where is Dr. Ozondo when you need him?

Why do Igbos go around looking for trouble?

Are they suicidal?

I see the point you are trying to make with the Igbo icon. I do slightly disagree, but your argument still can be made.

Concerning the "pigeonholing" accusation, I disagree. In the literary world, authors from around the globe are associated with their geography. We have European literature, American literature, Asian literature, Latin American literature and African literature. Professor Achebe's novels falls into the category African literature and I see nothing wrong with that. His novels illustrate Africa's unique cultures. You may call it "pigeonholing" but I see it as bringing diversity to the world of literature.

The man was a proud Biafran and alluding something else to him is disrespectful to him. Personally, I only see myself as a Yoruba despite having a Nigerian passport(which I have never used). When I die, I believe people should respect me for being a Yoruba Briton AND not Nigerian. Calling me a Nigerian would be disrespectful! cheesy

We need to stop letting people define what and who we're to us. African Literature is more Afrocentric, and the late Achebe was more into fiction and modern literature from an African and Nigerian perspective after the arrival of the Europeans(post-colonial era). So he's more of a modern 'literaturist' than anything else. Africa literature deals solely with the African people and their culture before the arrival of the Europeans.

Anything "modern" isn't African because "modern" is another pseudonym for WESTERN. So, you're pigeonholing his works into what it's not.

TheBookWorm:
To be honest, I do not think he was simply an Igbo/Biafran icon. He is an AFRICAN ICON. There is a reason why people around the world consider him the "Father of African Literature." And to say anything less about this man is simply disrespectful.

I was not even born in Africa, but he opened my eyes to African literature. Keep in mind I was required to read Things Fall Apart back when I was in high school in the United States. It was part of the English curriculum and I do not think much has changed.

Calling him an Igbo/Biafran icon doesn't mean he wasn't an African icon. I was writing in the Nigerian context and how he chose to see himself before his untimely demise. At the end of the day, MLK was a universal hero because the civil rights movement paved the way for most of the equality and liberalism we're enjoying in the world today. However, he saw himself as an African-America/black hero hence why people see him as that.

You're also committing the same gaffe you accused me of by pigeonholing his writings into "African Literature." What's African literature? undecided

I'm not from Nigeria as well but I did read some of his books. He was a great writer and I admire his simplified approach of writing

The great man died a Biafran, let him rest in peace. He made his choice and we all need to respect him for that and celebrate him as a Biafran. I'm sure the Biafran flag will be in half mast today.

R.I.P Chinua Achebe.
