FROM the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) yesterday came a shocking revelation that $450 million out of the over $3 billion allegedly stolen by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha could not be traced. Briefing on the Non-Conviction Based Forfeiture of Proceeds and Instrumentalities of Unlawful Activity Bill, Tim Daniel, a legal expert from the United Kingdom (UK) assisting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ) in the draft of the bill, stressed that even though there was proof that $450 million is stacked away somewhere, it was yet to be traced. According to him, while the $1.9 billion recovered from the Abacha family by the Federal Government is a major success story in assets recovery, there are still funds stolen from Nigeria which are yet to be recovered. He disclosed that $300 million is still to be repatriated to Nigeria from Luxembourg where it was stashed away by the late Head of State, saying the letters of request by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo-led administration is yet to yield fruit. Daniel further said the late dictator also stashed $400 million in Liechtenstein which Nigeria is yet to recover. According to him, "the cases of Luxembourg and Liechtenstein are cases of monies frozen or lost by banks." He, however, stressed that the Federal Government and its partners have intensified investigations into the whereabouts of the funds, adding that there is hope for results soon. Breaking down the $1.9 billion recovered from the late Head of State, Daniel said $750 million came from voluntary surrender by the family while $570 million was recovered from Switzerland. "$380 million was recovered from Jersey and $150 million, which was the Ajaokuta Steel plant debt was recovered from UK," he added. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article02//indexn2_html?pdate=210509&ptitle=%27$450m%20Abacha%27s%20loot%20can%27t%20be%20traced%27,%20says%20UN%20agency |

The arrest of a police Sergeant for allegedly planning to supply ammunition to militants in the Niger Delta on Wednesday triggered heavy shooting in Warri, Delta State. The naval component of the Joint Task Force, otherwise known as Operation Restore Hope, acting on a tip off, had stormed Makaiva Jetty, in Warri South Local Government Area and apprehended the policemen, whose name was given as Dickson Abere. It was gathered that 17 cartons of ammunition were recovered from the Sergeant said to be serving with Mopol 31, Asaba, the Delta State capital. A source told our correspondent that the naval team, on arrival at the Jetty around 11am on Wednesday, fired shots into the air to prevent possible resistance or attack by militants. The shooting, which lasted for over 30 minutes, shattered the prevailing peace in the oil community as panic-stricken residents scampered for safety. Warri is close to Gbaramatu Kingdom where some communities had, in past eight days, come under heavy bombardment by the JTF operatives in search of militants. Our correspondent gathered that 13 suspected militants were also picked up from the Jetty by the security operatives. Abere with service number 151149 and 13 suspected militants were being grilled at the Naval Intelligence Unit of the NNS Delta, as at 6pm on Wednesday. http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200905215415285 |
