CareerEvery Teacher Needs A Hug by blekko101(op): 6:46am On Nov 19, 2025
EVERY TEACHER NEEDS A HUG

For decades, the teaching profession stood tall as one of the most respected career paths in Africa. Teachers were not only regarded as custodians of knowledge but also as moral guides, community builders, and nation shapers. They were honored by parents, admired by students, and held in high esteem by society.
But today, the story has changed.

In many African countries, especially within the private school ecosystem, teaching has been pushed to the bottom of the occupational hierarchy. What was once a noble calling is now viewed as a “stopgap job,” a temporary hustle, or the last option for anyone struggling to find employment. Teachers, the very foundation of every educated society, now navigate a system that underpays them, undervalues them, and frequently exposes them to hostility.

This decline did not happen overnight. Several forces have collectively weakened the profession, draining teachers’ morale and leaving them emotionally exhausted, socially vulnerable, and economically frustrated.

---

1. The Erosion of African Values

Africa once upheld strong values of respect—respect for elders, leaders, parents, and most especially teachers. A teacher’s word was final; a teacher’s presence commanded attention; a teacher’s role was sacred.
However, in recent decades, many communities have gradually replaced these values with certain aspects of Western culture that encourage extreme individualism and challenge traditional authority structures.

Children now boldly confront teachers. Parents sometimes treat teachers as servants rather than professionals. Society increasingly normalizes disrespect, and the dignity that once surrounded the teaching profession continues to fade. Where once a teacher was revered, they now struggle to be heard.

---

2. Too Many Graduates, Too Few Jobs

The rate at which universities produce graduates far exceeds the number of available jobs. As unemployment rises, thousands of young people accept teaching roles simply because there is nowhere else to go.

This oversaturation has created the false perception that “anyone can teach,” reducing the profession to an emergency option rather than a chosen path.
Because desperation pushes many into teaching, school owners exploit the situation: why pay fairly when ten more applicants are waiting outside?

The more the labour supply outweighs demand, the faster the profession loses its honour.

---

3. A Dying Economy and the Exploitation of Teachers

In many private schools today, a teacher will work for a full month—arriving early, taking long hours of lessons, standing on their feet all day, marking dozens of scripts, preparing lesson notes, and managing the emotional needs of children—yet receive a salary too small to meet basic needs.

This practice thrives not because schools are poor, but because greed and wickedness have penetrated the system.
Some school proprietors drive luxury cars, expand their businesses, and collect high fees from parents—yet treat the teachers who sustain their schools as burdens.

Teachers often go months with unpaid salaries. Some are dismissed without explanation. Many are forced to do extra tasks with no compensation. Yet they endure, because survival is a stronger force than dignity in a harsh economy.

---

4. Teachers Treated as Disposable Tools

Because so many graduates are desperate for employment, school owners have developed a dangerous mindset: teachers are replaceable.
A teacher who complains is fired immediately. A teacher who asks for better pay is labelled “ungrateful.” A teacher who stands up for their rights is replaced the next morning.

This fear of job loss has silenced many educators.
They swallow insults, accept oppression, and work under conditions that strip away their self-worth—all in fear that someone else will take their place.

The result is negative morale: teachers feel invisible, powerless, and hopeless.

---

Teachers: Poor, Defenseless, and Easy Targets

Society now sees teachers as the weak link in the education chain.
Parents yell at them without reason.
Students insult or threaten them.
Employers dismiss them at the slightest complaint.

Some schools will sacrifice five teachers just to protect one misbehaving student, especially if the child is from a wealthy home.
This twisted prioritization positions teachers as low-value commodities—people whose careers can be destroyed overnight to appease parents or maintain school reputation.

Teachers are now vulnerable to physical assault, emotional abuse, false accusations, and exploitation.
Their workplaces—schools—are no longer safe spaces.

---

Why Every Teacher Needs a Hug

Teachers wake up every day to shape the minds of the next generation, yet many of them cry silently at night.
They give their energy, patience, time, and compassion, but receive insult, stress, and underpayment in return.

A teacher stands before a classroom and smiles, even when they have not eaten.
A teacher encourages children to chase their dreams, even when theirs have been crushed by society.
A teacher continues to teach values, respect, and discipline—even when none of these is extended to them.

Teachers deserve encouragement.
They deserve respect.
They deserve fair pay.
They deserve safety.
They deserve love.

Truly, every teacher needs a hug.

---

The Way Forward

One of the most practical solutions to restoring dignity to the teaching profession is reducing the pressure on it.
Graduates must be encouraged to acquire skills, build businesses, and explore vocational paths instead of rushing into teaching simply because it is available.

When teaching stops being a dumping ground for the unemployed, the profession will regain its value.
Schools will be forced to respect qualified teachers.
Employers will pay better.
Only passionate, trained individuals will enter the classroom.

Africa cannot rise without its teachers.
No doctor, engineer, lawyer, journalist, or leader exists without the impact of a teacher.

If society desires a better future, then it must protect the people who shape that future.

And it begins with acknowledging a simple truth:

Every teacher needs a hug.

Car TalkWhy Won't You Let Your Friends Borrow Your Car by blekko101(op): 12:37pm On Feb 28, 2024
Recently a friend approached me and told me he will need my car on a Sunday to move his family around a couple of places in Abuja on a Sunday.
My first response was 'No'

Apart from the fact that I will use the car to move my family to church during church hours, I wouldn't want a situation where my car is been towed back for any reason.

Beside family members, I can't ask friends for car because I want to move around. You just can't tell what might happen to it.

What's your reason

Chai embarassed, What a way to die, but why are India people so foolish, why would the onlookers try to dispatch a tiger with stones alone, why not use something else even if it means shooting and killing the tiger? Or is the life of the tiger now more important than the life of that young man? Maybe Indians are like Fulanis who value the life of animals more than that of a human. Anyways let me pass the mc to Mr righteousness2 since he is the original poster
Where in the zoo will onlookers who have only come to the zoo just to have fun and pass time get guns and tranquilizers to put down a tiger?

As sophisticated US movies are, they still produce movies that require the use of firearms more obscure than the ones here. These weapons are useful for movies that set in the early stage of firearms.

CultureCan This Ever Happen In Nigeria? by blekko101(op): 7:27am On Aug 13, 2021
Nigerians, in an attempt to save time and out maneuver the other road users will choose to drive on the lane for oncoming vehicles. Soon, the whole road is jammed with no iota of movement for either vehicles using both lanes. There after tension begins to build up among drivers and if one is not careful, he/she may leave there with a scratched or damaged vehicle.

Slow traffic movement that would have taken a few minutes may sometimes end up taking hours if not properly managed.

What do you think is the root cause of the Nigerian manner of handling traffic congestion?

Before you try another measure, get izal disinfectant. Rub it on your skin. don't mix it with water. You will feel hot sensation on your skin for some seconds thereafter you be perfectly fine. Do this like 3 times a week. If it's any skin infection of any kind, (fungi, bacteria, virus, etc, it will be gone except the problem is beyond the skin.
FamilyChallenges Of Being A Man In Our 'modern' Society by blekko101(op): 10:06am On Jun 26, 2021
Every time I keep wondering if the society is ready for what is coming in a short while. People keep pushing that a man must not hit a woman, no matter what, which is a good thing by the way.

They come all out for you when you do, but smile and make jest when a woman hits or abuse a man in public.

Some will call the man a weakling for not fighting back. The best he will get from some folks is being called a 'real man'.

Real men don't hit women, which isn't a bad phrase. How about 'real women' ever thought of that? He dare not retaliate.

You hear the regular cliché "oga leave am na woman" and women already know this and they are taking full advantage of it.

Women often rain abuses on men in public at the slightest misunderstanding and often take up a notch by charging towards men with the intention of physically abusing them.

They cry fowl and play the victim when the man resist or fight back knowing they will get sympathizers. He will go home traumatized even for days to come.

Even in the so called developed countries for example, a woman's statement is admitted as true until you have a hard evidence to counter it.

Over there lots of men are already scared of getting married because they can lose all they worked for all their life in one twist of event with their wife.

Guess that's what gave rise to the growing trend of baby mama/daddy. Instead of pushing a biased ideology that obviously favours one gender, isn't it better to push a holistic ideology that says no body should hit another cos we are all humans.

We feel hurt the same way irrespective of gender. After all what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Share your experience of abuse and how you handled it
