As David and his men pursued the Amalekites, they came to the brook Besor. The word ‘Besor’ means ‘good news’; so David and his men came to a place that was symbolic of good news. They were yet to recover their losses, but a sign of good news was already in the air.

After arriving at Besor, David and his men went on to recover all they lost. They saw a sign of good news, and good news eventually came their way. The sign of good news they saw eventually culminated in good news.

Friend, when you see signs of good news, be sure that your good news will eventually come. When things appear to be gradually falling into place, even if everything hasn’t finally worked, be patient, your good news will soon be complete and your joy will be full. When the doors are already opening to you, even if you haven’t got a response yet, be patient, something good will soon come your way.

Every sign of good news you see is a sign that something really good will eventually come your way; every little favour you receive is a sign that bigger favours await you; everything that makes you smile is a sign that something bigger and better is coming to make you laugh; your ‘Besor’ is a harbinger of good news.

Appreciate the little signs of good news that God has given you; wait patiently for your mega good news; if you can see a sign of good news, then your good news is coming.

When David enquired of the Lord, he asked: Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? David asked two questions from God; he made two requests from God. When God responded, He brought three answers; He told David to pursue, overtake and recover all. God gave David more than what he asked for; simply put, God exceeded David’s expectations.

Friend, hear God’s prophetic word: God will exceed your expectations. God will give you more than you ever asked for; God will surprise you with blessings you didn’t ask for; God will give you more results than you sought for; God will open more doors than you asked Him to open; God will bring you miracles that are bigger and better than what you asked for.

Whatever you have asked from God is nothing compared to what He is about to bring your way; your expectations may already be high, but God will still exceed them; your expectations may seem impossible, but God will make them possible, with additions you are not expecting. You may have modest calculations for some expectations, but God will still exceed them all.

God is not limited by what you have asked; He is able to do more than you can ever ask or imagine; He is able to do even the things you are still planning to ask; He is able to bring to reality those dreams that seem too impossible to become a reality.

Remember, David encouraged himself in the Lord; he fortified himself; he improved himself, and he got more than he asked from God. If you can fortify yourself, God will cause you to have more than you asked for.

When David enquired of the Lord about the need to chase the Amalekites, God told him to pursue, with a promise that he would overtake them and recover all. David suffered huge losses; he lost wives, children, properties and possessions; he lost what God gave to him freely.

God’s promise to David was that everything he lost would be recovered. David wouldn't just recover some and lose some; he recovered all that the enemy stole. His loss was temporary in the light of God’s promise; in a matter of time, David was going to experience full restoration.

Friend, hear God’s prophetic word: you shall recover everything the enemy stole from you. You shall recover your lost possessions, lost opportunities, lost resources, lost relationships, lost grounds, lost properties, lost time, etc. Everything you have ever lost, and everything the enemy stole from you shall be restored in full.

When God restores, He doesn’t restore the much you lost; He compensates. Your restoration shall come with compensation. Whatever you lost, God will bring a better replacement. Whatever you lost, God will bring something bigger and better.

Your restoration shall make you smile and forget the pains of past losses and misfortunes. Your restoration shall wipe your tears and give you a fresh start.

Present your losses to God and ask for restoration; if God could restore what David lost, He can restore everything you lost. You shall have restoration with compensation.

Apart from telling David to pursue the Amalekites, God declared that he would overtake them. The word ‘overtake’ as used in that scripture means ‘to reach’. So God assured David that when he chases the Amalekites, he will catch up with them. He promised David that he would reach his destination; He assured David that he will get there.

Friend, hear God’s prophetic word: for every journey God has inspired you to begin, God says, you will get there. Concerning your dreams, you will get there; concerning your legitimate ambitions and aspirations, you will get there; concerning your next level, God says, you will get there; concerning the challenges you want to surmount, God says, you will get there.

You will hit your targets and achieve what you want to achieve; you will get to the peak of your career/business; you will sit on the throne that God has prepared for you; you will step into heights that will make you smile; you will receive answers to prayers; you will achieve those things that seem impossible for to achieve; you will get there, with God on your side.

God promised that David would get there, and in a matter of time, David got there. He promised that David would reach his destination, and David reached his destination. If God has promised that you will get there, be sure that you will get there; if God has said He would help you hit your target, be sure that you will hit your target.

Your journey will not end in shame and disgrace; your journey shall end in praise; your journey shall end in joy and gladness; you won't stop on the way; as it was unto David, so shall it be unto you: you will get there

When David enquired from the Lord, his first question was: Lord, shall I pursue? David wanted to know if he should chase after the Amalekites that took away his wives and children. He wanted to know if he should give the enemies a run for their lives. To pursue is to chase after a target with hostile intent; so David simply asked if he should run with hostile intent.

Notice that when God responded, He told David to Pursue. God commanded David to pursue the Amalekites; He commanded David to chase his targets with hostile intent; He commanded David to approach his targets with speed, passion and energy; He commanded David to use everything in him to chase the Amalekites.

Friend, are there dreams, visions and targets you have set for yourself? God says, pursue! For every plan you have laid out for yourself, God says, chase after it. Run after your targets; don’t just walk, run! Run in the direction of your plans and visions; go after the aspirations that look impossible; go for your goals; go for your next level; run towards your future.

Chase your dreams and visions like your life depends on it; chase your plans like there won’t be a second chance; chase your progress as if it only depends on chasing; chase after your aspirations fearlessly and confidently; chase after your targets with everything you have in you; chase your passion and mission in life with every strength and zest you have.

David obeyed God’s command to pursue, and in the end, it paid off. If only you can pursue, be sure that your pursuit will pay off in a matter of time. You will achieve everything you chase after, if you dare to chase.

In our Focal Scripture, David asked Abiathar the priest to bring him an ephod, which he later used to enquire of the Lord. Using the ephod and enquiring of the Lord was a priest’s job. Seeing the wailing men whose wives and children were missing, one expected Abiathar to rise to the occasion, but he didn’t.

When Abiathar was not forthcoming in enquiring from God on the way forward, David took the ephod and enquired of God. Abiathar failed to do his work, and David got it done. Abiathar’s failure was David's opportunity; Abiathar’s failure in his job role led to a scenario where someone else did his job.

Friend, when you fail to play your role effectively, don’t be surprised if someone else takes your job from you while you are still available. If you fail in your assignment, be careful, others are waiting to step into your shoes. If you fail in your role as a spouse/parent, be careful, you might open the doors for a strange man/woman to play your role as a spouse/parent. Any incompetence you display in your career is a highway to irrelevance, obscurity and replacement.

David may not have been trained in priesthood, but he made an attempt in the face of Abiathar’s nonchalance and he got it right. If you take your roles for granted and carry out your assignments shabbily, someone else who may not even be as good as you might just step out and that would be the end of the party for you.

Being available whilst someone else takes over your role is a sign of irrelevance on your own part. You may be God’s best option, but not God's only option.Discern and be wise.

In Old Testament times, there were Kings and there were Priests. Kingship and priesthood were completely different. A priest was not expected to do the work of a king, and vice versa. There was some separation of powers, and everyone stayed in his lane.

In our Focal Scripture, David commanded Abiathar the priest to bring him the ephod, and he went on to enquire of the Lord. The ephod was handled by priests; enquiring of the Lord was a priest’s job; but after David encouraged himself in the Lord, he did a priest's job. He worked on himself, and he stepped into multiple roles.

Friend, if you work on yourself, you will step into multiple roles. If you improve yourself, you will do more than you are currently doing; if you fortify yourself spiritually through prayers and increased depth in God’s word, you will step into new roles in ministry; if you strengthen your competence, you will be amazed at how you will take over other people’s jobs and roles.

Multiple roles are for those who are willing to do more than what others are doing; multiple roles are for those who see beyond the limitations of their current roles and become good enough for bigger roles; multiple roles are not products of mere wishful thinking; you can only take up multiple roles if you become good enough for it, and if you become better than you are currently.

David worked on himself, and when he tried his hands on priestly duties, he got a response from God. God didn't reject David simply because priesthood was not his job. Dare to become better, work on yourself, and you will step into bigger roles.

When faced with the loss of his wives and children, as well as the threat of being stoned by his own men, David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. Like we earlier observed, the word ‘encourage’ comes from the Hebrew word ‘chazaq’, which also means ‘be urgent’. David responded to his challenge with some urgency.

Friend, be urgent, and act with urgency; when you take good decisions, don’t delay in implementing them; act fast, don’t waste time. If God gives you ideas that will move you higher, act fast and do something about them quickly. If God brings opportunities your way, take them quickly before someone else does. If God opens doors for you, walk in and take your place before the door is shut.

Discard procrastination; stop delaying yourself; stop postponing things you can do immediately. Don’t wait for things to become complicated before you take the actions you should have taken on time. Don’t allow the unique ideas and opportunities before you to be overtaken by events. Act fast, and be urgent in all your ways.

If David was not urgent in his response to the attack of the Amalekites, just maybe, they would have had enough time to escape with his wives and children. His failure to act fast would have cost him a lot. If you lack urgency in your approach to life, be careful, you just might be losing more than you are aware of.

Slow and steady will not always win the race; some urgency will make things happen fast and with ease. Urgency will take you to the top faster.

In our Focal Scripture, after the loss of his wives and children and the wives and children of his men, David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. The word ‘encourage’ as used in that scripture is derived from a Hebrew word ‘chazaq’.

One of the meanings of ‘chazaq’ is ‘to be firm’. So David faced adversity, and he responded by increasing his firmness. David’s response to his challenge was laced with firmness.

Friend, in 2015, be firm. Be firm about your convictions and commitments; be firm about your resolutions and choices; be firm about the things you don’t want to do anymore; be firm about the changes you need to implement; be firm as you pursue the needed improvements in your life; be firm about relationships you don’t need anymore; be firm about attitudes you no longer wish to exhibit.

One thing is certain: lack of firmness will cause you to be swayed by the wind, and you will end up moving in any direction the wind blows. Lack of firmness will make you vulnerable to people around you who are firm in their own decisions and resolutions.

If you fail to be firm as you face your battles, you just might lose the battles you have the capacity to win; if you fail to be firm, you may take good decisions that you can’t act on.

David encouraged himself in the Lord, he got firm in response to the attack of the enemy, and he fought back and recovered all that he lost. Firmness will propel you to new heights and give you results that fear and cowardice will rob you of.

Firmness without crudeness is the way to go. Be firm.

David’s men were warriors under his command, but they turned against their commander. In military terms, they committed mutiny, but David still encouraged himself in the Lord.

The word ‘encourage’ as used in that scripture comes from the Hebrew word ‘chazaq’. Another meaning of ‘chazaq’ is ‘fortify’. So David fortified himself in the Lord. He was surrounded by men who were set to betray and stone him, and he fortified himself. There was a battle for recovery that needed to be fought, and David fortified himself.

Friend, when issues arise to weaken you, fortify yourself in the Lord. Strengthen yourself through fasting and prayers; fortify yourself by reading and confessing God’s word; fortify yourself by soaking yourself in God’s presence. Fortify yourself with midnight prayers; fortify yourself against the devices of the enemy; fortify yourself against the men who are ready to stone you.

If you are unfortified, enemies will make a mess of your destiny. If you are unfortified, you may face attacks that will reduce your destiny to rubbles. If you don't strengthen yourself through intense prayers, you may not withstand the attacks against you. If you are unfortified, you will be vulnerable to the enemy.

David fortified himself, and he fought back and recovered everything he lost. If you have been weakened by what happened to you, fortify yourself before you face another attack.

Fortify yourself, and you will repel the attacks of the enemy; fortify yourself, and you will fight back and defeat the enemy.

Prayer : Lord, give me grace to consistently fortify myself through prayers and the Word, in Jesus’ name!Amen

In our Focal Scripture, David’s men turned against him and spoke of stoning him; he lost his wives and children to the Amalekites, he was in distress, surrounded by men who were equally distressed and affected by the raid, and some men wanted to make him a victim of a collective misfortune.

When no one was willing to console David, he braced up and encouraged himself in the Lord his God. He didn’t find encouragement from people around him, and he looked inward to find it; he couldn’t find anyone to speak the right words to him, so he spoke those words to himself.

Sometimes, we are faced with situations and circumstances, where no one can encourage us. Sometimes, the people around us are as distressed and discouraged as we are, and cannot encourage us; sometimes, the people we expect encouragement from are people who don’t care about what is discouraging us.

Friend, when there is no one to encourage you, encourage yourself and move on. When people can't find the right words to console and placate you, encourage yourself. When people are not interested in speaking words of hope to you, speak words of hope to yourself. When encouragement is absent around you, find it within you.

David encouraged himself, and he led his men to recover what they lost. When you encourage yourself, you are simply preparing for recovery.

Encourage yourself when no one else can; encourage yourself when all hope is lost; encourage yourself against all odds, and you will pull through despite your challenges.

In Joshua 1 vs. 6, God said: “Be strong and of a good courage…”.

When David and his men realized that their wives and children were taken away by the Amalekites, they lifted up their voices and wept. David wept with his men. He was already anointed as the next king of Israel, but he joined his men to act like all hope was lost.

When he joined them to weep, they rose against him and threatened to stone him. He did what everyone did, and they turned against him. David’s destiny was bigger and more profound than that of his men, but he joined the band wagon, and it backfired.

Friend, God says, be different. Don’t do what everyone is doing. When others speak hopelessly, or speak ill of your nation, don’t join them; when others see no future, see a future; when others see no reason to press on, see a reason to press on against all odds. Don’t be misled by the responses of people facing the same challenge as you; your challenges may be same, but your destiny is different.

David was the next king of Israel, and he had no business acting hopelessly before the same men he should lead. A man of destiny does not act like others, and does not allow one bad experience to obliterate a great future; a man who knows his God smiles through the storm, knowing that God is bigger than every storm.

Dare to be different; be a good example to others; even if everyone is acts wrongly, dare to act right; even if everyone is faithless, keep your faith and hope alive; even if your colleagues and contemporaries get involved in wrong doing, don’t join them.

Being positively different may not be fashionable or popular, but it will pay off in a matter of time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to
make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as when one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the
last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft.

The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter
smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter.

When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg,or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?
Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and
stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level?

How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best~of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The
brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

You might want to send this message to those people who mean something to you, to those who have touched your life in one way or another, to
those who make you smile when you really need it, to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down, to those
whose friendship you appreciate, to those who are so meaningful in your life.

If you don't send it, all that will happen is that you will just miss out on the opportunity to brighten someone's day with this message!

When the Amalekites captured the wives and children of David and his men, they took them away towards their own city. David’s wives and children and the wives and children of his men were taken towards the enemy’s direction. The event that played out that day led to movement towards the enemy. David’s ‘future’ moved towards the enemy.

Friend, one sure way to truncate your future is to allow today’s events to push you in the enemy’s direction. One way to mess up your future is to allow today’s experiences to plant negative attitudes in you.

When you allow what happens today to push you into depression, beware, you are truncating your future. When you allow today’s disappointment to push you into counterproductive attitudes, you are preparing grounds for failure and uncommon shame.

Never let one negative experience move you in a negative direction. Never let the wickedness of people against you to elicit hatred and bitterness; never allow yesterday's losses and failures to affect the future; never let what didn't work in your favour in time past to define your attitude towards new opportunities.

If any part of you has gone in the direction of the enemy, retrieve it immediately. Recover your peace of mind, good attitudes, patience, persistence, hope, faith, love, joy, self-control, etc.

If it has gone towards the enemy, take it back before the enemy makes a mess of your destiny.

Proverbs 14 vs. 12 further warns: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Prayer : Lord, I refuse to move in the direction of the enemy; I recover everything in me that has gone in the enemy’s direction, in Jesus’ name!Amen
