Former President Goodluck Jonathan has met with the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, at his Abuja residence, in what political observers describe as a crucial consultation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The closed-door meeting, which took place amid intensifying political realignments, is believed to be part of broader efforts to forge new alliances and strengthen the opposition’s position in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Jonathan, who in recent months has been at the center of high-level consultations across party lines, continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s democratic direction.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also visited David Mark for a separate meeting. Announcing the development on his X page, Atiku described the engagement as a “meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land,” and shared images of key participants.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday summoned the immediate past Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid growing scrutiny of the state’s finances during the six-month emergency rule.

Ibas, who arrived at Aso Rock around 5:50 p.m. dressed in brown traditional attire, was joined at the meeting by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukayede.

Edun had entered the villa earlier but briefly left, returning moments later with a file in hand — a move that signalled the gravity of the discussions behind closed doors.

The retired naval chief was appointed sole administrator of Rivers State in March 2025 after President Tinubu declared emergency rule following months of political turmoil. His tenure ended on September 17, when the President directed the suspended Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly to resume their duties.

One of the first decisions taken by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly after returning to work was to launch an investigation into the state’s finances under Ibas. The lawmakers resolved “to explore the process of knowing what transpired during the emergency rule with regard to spending from the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the award of contracts and other expenditures.”

Ibas has openly rejected the decision to probe his administration’s financial activities.

Former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has assured that the Yoruba people will hold prominent positions in his government if elected President in 2027, dismissing fears of a Hausa-Fulani domination.

Atiku, who is married to a Yoruba woman, described the Yoruba ethnic group as “one of the finest species of humanity” and emphasized the deep personal and familial ties he shares with them.

“It is also for this reason that the interest of the Yoruba will always occupy a topmost place in my policy making and governance if by the special Grace of Allah, I am lucky to be president in 2027.

“Therefore, the fear that my ascension to Presidency might lead to Hausa/Fulani domination over Yoruba or other ethic group does not only arise, but also absolutely unfounded because the entire Yoruba stock are my larger extended family and In-laws.

“It is for this reason that I count myself extremely lucky to have a wife from amongst this noble specie of the human race,” Atiku said in a statement issued by his media consultant, Kola Johnson. “The bond uniting me with the Yoruba is like the genetic bond of a family, and this is why the Yoruba, whether individually or collectively, have always occupied a special place in my heart.”

The former vice president highlighted that his first wife, Titi Atiku Abubakar, is from Ijesa in Osun State, and they have four Yoruba children together. “She is now over 75 years old, and we are still together. My children with Titi sometimes call me Baba Rere, meaning ‘good father.’”

Atiku further dismissed suggestions that his presidency would lead to northern domination.
“The fear that my ascension to the presidency might lead to Hausa-Fulani domination over Yoruba or other ethnic groups does not arise. The Yoruba are my larger extended family and in-laws,” he said.

Praising the Yoruba for their sophistication and educational advancement, Atiku said: “Yoruba are so sophisticated and highly educated that you can only toy with them at your own peril. My Ijesa-born Yoruba wife is more than a wife to me — she is my jewel of inestimable value.”

He added that Yoruba people have consistently ranked among his closest friends and associates, both in private and public life.

Port Harcourt was the focus of national attention on Thursday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara prepared to return to office following a six-month suspension that saw governance in the state interrupted under emergency rule. His reinstatement, authorised by President Bola Tinubu, has triggered both celebrations among residents and a formal resumption of state institutions.

Crowds of supporters gathered across Port Harcourt from as early as 7 a.m., filling roads leading to the Government House, the State Secretariat, and adjoining streets. Masquerades, musicians, and entertainers performed as residents expressed relief at the governor’s return. Some moved on to the Port Harcourt International Airport to await his arrival.

“This is a new dawn for Rivers State,” said one supporter near the Brick House, where political figures also arrived to cheers from their followers.

The governor’s absence coincided with a period of political unrest that prompted the Federal Government to impose emergency rule. Fubara was last seen publicly in Port Harcourt at the burial of a relative of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, shortly after a peace pact was reached in Abuja under the President’s mediation.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has rejected the recognition of a former senate president, David Mark, as the national chairman of the party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Kachikwu described INEC’s decision as irresponsible, adding that he had never had faith in the current leadership of the electoral body.

“Nigerians as a whole know that the David Mark-led faction of the ADC is on borrowed time.

“What we saw from the INEC chairman yesterday was another irresponsible act from the outgoing chairman of INEC,” he stated
