President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described his recent meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron as “productive,” noting that discussions between the two leaders centered on strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and France. The President disclosed this in a post on his official X handle on Wednesday, saying both leaders agreed to deepen bilateral ties to promote “mutual prosperity and global stability.” “Had a productive lunch with President Emmanuel Macron. We reviewed key areas of cooperation between Nigeria and France and agreed to deepen our partnership for mutual prosperity and global stability,” Tinubu wrote. Tinubu on Vacation in Europe Tinubu’s meeting with Macron comes as he continues his 2025 annual vacation, which commenced on September 4. Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz on Monday delivered a stark ultimatum to Hamas: lay down arms and release hostages or face “annihilation,” amid intensifying military operations in Gaza and growing international concern over the escalating conflict. The warning came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Hamas must accept a deal for the release of hostages seized during the group’s unprecedented October 2023 attack on Israel. Hamas, in a surprise shift, responded that it was ready for immediate talks, citing “ideas from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement.” https://voicenews.com.ng/israel-warns-hamas-to-surrender-or-face-annihilation-as-hostage-talks-loom/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wHYBlJ2b7Y El-Rufai, a member of the African Democratic Party (ADC) opposition coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, appealed to parents—especially mothers—to encourage children aged 16 and above to prepare for registration once eligible. He also urged young people to prioritise obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a key step in strengthening the region’s voice in national decision-making. “The government of our country today is democratic. We elect our leaders; we don’t select or appoint them. Voting is very important, and registering to vote is not a political imperative but a civic duty which every citizen must take seriously,” El-Rufai said. “Looking at the number of registered voters in Nigeria, the South-East—including Imo State—is lagging behind. I appeal to our mothers, sisters and daughters to mobilise our children, especially those who will be 18 by the next election cycle, to go out and register. It is very, very important,” he added.

We have met our revenue target for the year, and we met it in August,” he said. The President dismissed external pressures, including concerns about U.S. politics, stressing that Nigeria’s economy was stabilising. According to him, exchange rates have improved from ₦1,900 to the dollar when he assumed office, to about ₦1,450 at present. The Managing Director of the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), Ben Kure, has accused former governor Nasir El-Rufai of failing to accord fairness to the people of Southern Kaduna during his administration. Kure, who once served as a media aide to El-Rufai and also directed his campaign, made the allegation on Monday while speaking on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television. “What he’s saying is nothing but the peddling of falsehood. Let me be clear and categorical: having served him and being the director-general of his campaign, he did not even find us worthy of respect, let alone treat our people with fairness,” Kure said. He added that despite putting aside opposition from Southern Kaduna elders to support El-Rufai’s rise to power, the former governor allegedly sidelined the region. https://voicenews.com.ng/kaduna-media-chief-accuses-el-rufai-of-marginalising-southern-kaduna/

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has declared that former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia will be “retired” from active politics after the 2027 general elections. The declaration was made by the Director-General of the Ikwerre APC Campaign Organisation, Obinna Ekem, during the grand finale of the party’s rally at Omagwa community on Sunday, ahead of the August 30 local government election in the state. Ekem expressed confidence that the APC would secure victory across all 13 wards of Ikwerre in the council polls, citing assurances from residents. He added that the local chapter was already preparing for the 2027 elections, pledging overwhelming support for President Bola Tinubu despite the alliance between Amaechi and Omehia. He accused Amaechi of leading the APC in Rivers State into repeated electoral defeats during his tenure as the party leader, adding that his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had brightened the APC’s chances. https://voicenews.com.ng/apc-vows-to-retire-amaechi-omehia-from-politics/

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. The decision was taken on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the party’s 102nd NEC meeting held in Abuja. The confirmation, according to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, was in recognition of the efforts of the National Working Committee (NWC) under Damagum’s leadership in stabilising the party. The NEC session was briefly suspended to allow the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, to administer the oath of office. In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to members of the NWC for their support and to NEC for acknowledging his contributions toward repositioning the party. “I appreciate my colleagues in the NWC who made the task easier, and I also thank NEC members for their confidence in me. Together, we will continue to strengthen and reposition our great party,” he said. Damagum first assumed leadership in March 2023 as Acting National Chairman following the suspension of former chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu — a decision that was later upheld by the courts. Before then, he had served as the PDP Deputy National Chairman (North).

The Oyo governor underlined that the immediate priority is the survival and unification of the PDP, describing the party as alive and rebuilding, despite claims of its decline. “We’re trying to get all stakeholders, all tendencies in the PDP together so that we can give a credible alternative to Nigerians in the years ahead,” Makinde said.

Founder of Follow The Money, Hamzat Lawal, has condemned the proposed salary review for political office holders in Nigeria, describing the move as “insensitive” and a deliberate attempt to make President Bola Tinubu unpopular. Lawal was reacting to the plan by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of the President, Vice President, ministers, governors, and other public officials. Speaking on the development, he argued that such a decision was ill-timed, given the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians. “I understand that over 33 years, we have not really reviewed some of these allocations and the salary of the President, but this is not the time to do that; the country cannot afford it,” Lawal said. He stressed that political office holders who feel underpaid should quit public office and explore opportunities in the private sector. “If our politicians and political office holders think that they are not paid what they are due, they should resign and go and find a job that will pay them, or they can create their own companies and allocate salaries to themselves. Let them not put more burden than Nigerians are carrying,” he added. “A Setup for the President” Lawal further described the proposed salary review as a plot to set up President Tinubu, warning that it could make him unpopular with the citizens. https://voicenews.com.ng/political-office-holders-seeking-higher-salaries-should-resign-join-private-sector-hamzat-lawal/
