The Presidency has dismissed recent comments by former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, on the country’s rising debt profile.

In a post via his verified X handle on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, described Melaye’s statements as “entertainment, and not enlightenment.”

Melaye had alleged that Nigeria’s debt situation was so dire that the government may soon be forced to borrow from local fintech firms if the borrowing trend persists.

The former lawmaker questioned the rationale behind recent loan requests, asking why the government was seeking $1.7 billion from the World Bank and pointing to the Senate’s approval of about $21 billion in external borrowing so far.

He described the scale of borrowing as unprecedented and argued it contradicts the administration’s stated aim of eliminating waste.

However, citing data from the Debt Management Office, the Dare explained that Nigeria’s total public debt stood at ₦149.39 trillion as of March 31, 2025.

The former Minister of Youth and Sports stressed that the increase was not the result of reckless borrowing but largely due to the effect of naira depreciation on existing external loans.

According to him, Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio remains between 40 and 45 per cent, which he said was still moderate compared to countries such as South Africa at 70 per cent and Ghana at over 90 per cent.

“The real challenge lies in revenue mobilization, not runaway borrowing. Encouragingly, revenues are improving, strengthening our capacity to service obligations,” Dare said.

He added that borrowing remained a legitimate tool for financing reforms and infrastructure, warning against what he described as “political theatrics.”

“Borrowing is a legitimate tool for financing growth and reforms. What matters is sustainability, not soundbites. Unfortunately, Dino prefers theatrics to truth.

“Until Dino acquaints himself with basic economics, his commentary will remain what it has always been: entertainment, not enlightenment,” Dare added.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday announced that his administration achieved Nigeria’s 2025 revenue target ahead of schedule, with non-oil revenues meeting projections by August.

Speaking at the State House, Abuja, during a courtesy visit by members of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) led by former Nasarawa governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Tinubu said the milestone reflected his government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and economic reform.

“Nigeria is not borrowing. We have met our revenue target for the year, and we met it in August,” he said.

The President dismissed external pressures, including concerns about U.S. politics, stressing that Nigeria’s economy was stabilising. According to him, exchange rates have improved from ₦1,900 to the dollar when he assumed office, to about ₦1,450 at present.

He also unveiled plans for a nationwide mechanisation programme to strengthen food security. “Every region will have a mechanised farm centre. We are committed to removing poverty from our land, and that is the work we have already started,” he stated.

Tinubu urged supporters to stay focused ahead of the 2027 elections, assuring that his administration’s legacy would be rooted in justice, transparency, and prosperity.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he can place a bet with confidence that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made this statement on Monday during a media chat in Abuja, in response to the remarks made by former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, who claimed that Tinubu would come a distant third in the election.

El-Rufai, in an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, had said, “Tinubu will be third in the 2027 election. I have done my maths, and I can tell you Tinubu has no pathway to win. The worst-case scenario is that there will not be any winner in the first ballot.

“Ask yourself, is your life better now under President Tinubu? There is even no pretense of good intentions. We are free to assess our government after two weeks.”

However, Wike, in his reaction, said El-Rufai’s projections and calculations were flawed. He wondered why the former Kaduna governor did not specify who would come first and second in the election.

Wike also asserted that Peter Obi would pose no threat to Tinubu in 2027, even though he had six million votes in 2023. He noted that the political dynamics had since changed.

“I am very happy. It means that people identify with the elections,” Wike, who was surrounded by supporters, said, dismissing concerns about voter apathy.

“You have not heard of any violence. You have not heard of [people] carrying ballot boxes. You see that the electoral materials are there. People are there casting their votes. As far as we are concerned, the elections are very peaceful.

“Of course, we are concerned [about low turnout], but people are trooping out. Before the elections close, you will see the number of persons [increase]. So, we are very happy that, at the end of the day, these elections have been conducted very peacefully and successfully.”

Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not only needs a southern candidate but also a Christian from the region to emerge as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Mohammed, who stated this on Thursday, said that the PDP plans to avoid what he said was a mistake made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) when it opted for a same-faith ticket for the 2023 presidential poll.

“What I want to say is we have not absolutely chosen or narrowed down on any person. Everybody should know that PDP is open.

“It’s open in a manner that it is for the southerners to bring somebody, and I said with all humility, we don’t want to make the mistake of the APC,” he said

“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of July 2025 regarding the November 15 National Convention.

“It urges members to resist all attempts to derail the convention by anti-party forces; but to see the PDP as the only democratic institution and viable alternative for restoring Nigeria along the path of good governance and national development,” the communiqué partly read.

The meeting, chaired by the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, deliberated extensively on the state of the nation, insecurity, the erosion of democratic values, and preparations for the party’s forthcoming national convention.

The governors reiterated their commitment to rescuing the country and accused the APC of divisive governance and policies that continue to impose hardship on Nigerians.
