The former President stated this in his remarks at his 88th birthday celebration, held at the Marque Hallelujah of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. Two books authored by the former President titled ‘Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation and Reparation’ and ‘Nigeria: Past and Future’, were unveiled at the event. Notable personalities present at the event included Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State; Ogun Deputy Gov, Noimot Salako-Oyedele; former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; former governor of Ogun State, Sen Ibikunle Amosun; former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara; the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti-Ahmed, traditional rulers and captains of industry. The former President said he was optimistic that the country will attain an enviable status which all the citizens will be proud of during his lifetime irrespective of how bad the situation could be. He said: “I am an incurable optimistic about Nigeria. Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe in my lifetime, we will have the Nigeria that we will all be proud of.” He said African countries cannot continue to operate under the shadow of colonialism, feeling less superior and achieve its full potentials or take its rightful position in world affairs, saying that the continent must release itself from every element of colonialism and slavery to achieve greatness. Speaking about his new books, Obasanjo said: “Part of our problems in Africa is what I may call residues of slave trade, slavery and colonialism and until we can break ourselves completely away from it, we may not be able to make progress as we should do. “We have to shrug off residues of colonialism and slavery, we have to do this so as not be re-enslaved again after more than two centuries that we suffered the first one.” The former President said that he remains an incurable optimist about Nigeria getting out of the woods as long as the leadership demonstrates strong will to remain selfless and be committed to building a virile nation. Don’t believe anyone saying I am older than 88 Obasanjo while thanking those who graced the occasion, however, told them not to believe what some people are saying that he was older than 88. “Don’t believe anyone saying I am older than 88, that I am 90, my mother said that I was born on Ifo Market day and I am Aremu and Kabiyesi, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo was born on Itoku Market day and he is Aremu and nobody will change that. “So, every Itoku Market day is Oba Gbadebo’s birthday while every Ifo Market day is my birthday. We’ll leave it at that.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D_vWiLxevc The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has fixed August 9, 2025, for the conduct of fresh local government elections. The development followed last Friday’s Supreme Court judgment which nullified the October 5, 2024 local government elections in the state, on grounds that the electoral umpire failed to comply with stipulated regulations. Chairman of RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), made the announcement on Wednesday following an enlarged stakeholders meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. Justice Enebeli also unveiled the guidelines for the rescheduled local government elections to stakeholders at the meeting. He announced that political parties that will be eligible to field candidates in the election must complete, and submit an expression of interest form to participate on or before Monday, April 4, 2025, while the political parties are expected to conclude their primaries between April 21 -and May 12, 2025. Enebeli also disclosed that campaigns for the elections shall commence from July 7, 2025, and end on August 7, 2025. Justice Enebeli said that no nomination of candidate shall be valid unless the sum of N5,000 was paid for the position of councilors, and N10,000 for chairmen and vice chairmanship positions. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq6sdCnZckk Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has claimed that if not for the “Peter Obi effect,” he would have emerged victorious over Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2023 Lagos State governorship election. Speaking, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate argued that the unexpected surge of support for the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos shifted the political landscape, making it difficult for the PDP to compete effectively. “The 2023 election came with this tsunami that nobody ever expected, and it was there for everybody to see,” Jandor said. He explained that after Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) won the February 2023 presidential election in Lagos, the dynamics of the governorship poll, held weeks later, drastically changed against the PDP. Recall the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the governorship election with 762,134 votes. Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour finished second with 312,329 votes, while Jandor came third with 62,449 votes. Jandor insisted that, before the presidential election, PDP was in a strong position and actively challenging the ruling APC. “Before the general election, we were on the streets of Lagos, and the ruling party was nowhere to be found. We had several debates, and he (Sanwo-Olu) didn’t show up; he even said he didn’t want to share a stage with me,” Jandor recalled. “The 2023 election had its own dynamics. It was a two-horse race until the presidential election. If you look at what happened, Peter Obi came first in Lagos, Asiwaju came second, and Atiku came third. “The moment that happened, there was this belief that if we do this, we can get this state off XYZ. So, we were victims of that political wave. “Each time I address my people, I tell them: look, we did everything, but that wave came and swallowed the whole thing; nobody saw that coming.” Despite his disappointment, Jandor expressed confidence that, without the “Obi effect,” he might have won the governorship election. However, he acknowledged that “it wasn’t God’s time yet” for him to become governor. His political career began in the APC, where he led the Lagos4Lagos Movement before defecting to the PDP in 2022. He emerged as the party’s governorship candidate but recently left the PDP, citing internal sabotage. “We were waiting to see if the party at the national level, governed by its constitution, would take action against those engaged in anti-party activities. We waited patiently for two years, but instead of enforcing sanctions, the same person was appointed Vice Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee,” he said. Looking ahead, Jandor revealed that he is open to joining another political party to pursue his 2027 governorship ambition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETh1uTi01pA Former APC National Chairman and ex-governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole said he was not convinced that the petitioners did enough to warrant the cancellation of the election. Oshiomhole, who witnessed the tribunal’s proceedings, argued that “It is the duty of the petitioners to prove their allegations beyond doubt. “I am satisfied with how the hearing went, but only the tribunal can determine the outcome.” Meanwhile, the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, reversed judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the September 21, 2024 gubernatorial election held in the state, challenging the outcome of the election. PDP and Ighodalo are, in their petition, querying the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the election, which they claimed was marred by irregularities. Shortly after lawyers to parties adopted their written addresses and made final submissions on Monday, the three-man tribunal, headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi announced that the date for judgment would be communicated to them. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypnq3D3EHDw Frontline human rights activist and lawyer, Maxwell Opara Esq has urged Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara to comply with the supreme court order. On the other hand, the Rivers State government has said that it would decide its next step when it gets details of the Supreme Court judgment on the lingering political crisis in the state. The State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, in a statement said, the state government has taken note of reports in the media regarding the judgment of the Supreme Court concerning the funds of Rivers State and the administration of local governments in the state. He said: “At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people. “Though we have not gotten the details of the judgment from our legal team, we enjoin Rivers people to remain calm, law abiding and go about our legitimate businesses as we seek clarity on the judgment. “We believe that the determination of the main issue of defection of the 27 lawmakers is a matter not before the Supreme Court as it is pending at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter of defection comes before them.” Johnson, however, gave assurances that the state government remains committed to upholding its mandate to protect the best interest and the rule of law in all matters affecting Rivers State.
